On day in 1st grade I let a boy convince me to skip school. He had a plan: when we got off the bus in the morning, we’d meet behind a large bush at the edge of the playground. I think we pretended to play first and then ran behind it. My heart was racing when I heard the bell ring. I wasn’t where I should be, and I felt like throwing up. We got really bored after awhile and decided to eat from our lunchboxes. I’m sure I had graham crackers and a peanut butter & butter sandwich. I tried to save some for lunch. At one point he said he had to pee, so I looked away while he went at the other end of the bush. I was really embarrassed to be sharing space with a boy peeing, my cheeks felt hot. More time passed and I was worried about getting in trouble. We were still bored and couldn’t go anywhere without being caught. So we snuck back into the building, even ducking under some classroom windows, and quickly walking down the hall, running past doorways. We went to the office where we told the secretary that our bus was late. She gave us a pass to give to our teacher. We never got in trouble. At the time it seemed like we’d been gone for hours, but now I think it couldn’t have been more than 40 minutes. And I think the whole reason I skipped was because I didn’t want him to think I liked school. . . .
