things you said that i wasn’t meant to hear

Emma x MC

MC sits in their room, staring at the ceiling, tossing a basketball up at the ceiling that Caleb left at their house when he asked them to help him with shooting drills yesterday. They wonder when Emma is gonna call, usually, she calls earlier than she says she well.

Maybe she got caught up at work… MC thinks to themselves, tapping their foot against the foot of their bed frame. They begin to lose hope in Emma calling when their phone starts buzzing. MC jumps up grabbing their phone about to answer it when they take a breath looking at the caller ID. Must be Caleb about his ball. They answer the phone bring it to their ear. They’re about to answer when they hear a soft hum of music and the sound of Emma’s laugh. They could recognize that song anywhere Emma’s favorite Johnny Cash song. It was Emma’s favorite to play on her old-timey record player, the last gift her dad got her before they stopped talking-talking.

“Do you mean that? Do you actually like me?” MC sucks in a breath, leaving their phone pressed to their ear..what the… Caleb’s voice is inaudible, but they can tell it’s Caleb’s. “I don’t know what to say…I mean I was thinking about asking MC out.”

“Don’t say that about them.” Emma’s voice defensive to whatever Caleb was saying they sucked in a deep breath listening on, too scared of what would happen next to hang up. “I don’t want to hurt them, Caleb, I mean one minute you don’t like me, the next you don’t care about me, and now you’re…you’re here in my room when I should be with MC confessing to being in love with me… what am I supposed to say?”

Caleb… asking Emma out? How could he? I trusted him… MC swallows deeply, squeezing their eyes shut to blur out the tears forming in their eyes. She wouldn’t, would she…? “Caleb…I still like you-but I really, really like MC.. I mean, I was gonna ask them out at Payton’s party. I can’t be having this conversation, we’ve been unofficially dating for a whole quarter and a half.”

MC smiles to themselves, with a soft sigh. “Caleb, I-fuck it- kiss me.” MC eyes grow wide before they hear the sound of two people kiss and Emma giggling. MC takes a deep breath, as tears fall onto their phone looking at the end call button when they hear Emma’s voice. “CALEB??!! WHY IS YOUR PHONE CALLING MC?”

“Oh my god.. MC? MC? Are you there? I’m so-” MC hangs up the phone as she starts to talk holding it against their chest pushing their lips together trying to hold back the tears… how could she do this to me? MC wipes the tears from their cheeks walking to the mirror on their wall looking at their reflection a long moment with an angry yell slamming their fist into it. Their phone buzzing on their bed, Emma’s ringtone filling the noise around them. Slamming another punch into the half broken mirror with a loud yell.
