MILL POND PARK (& ADAM D. RAND MEMORIAL TRAIL)
I feel like this is a really a hyper-local park, as in, not every park is worth coming in from out of town for and honestly, not every park has to be either. Some places are just meant for the locals. This park absolutely serves its purpose of being a lovely place to take a calm and easy walk on a paved loop-trail and to see some nice waterfowl if that’s something you’re into.
💰 : FREE
⏰ : Open from dusk to dawn, 365 days a year
📍 : 2935 Merrick Road, Wantagh, Long Island (sometimes listed as being in Bellmore.. it's very on the border of both towns)
♿️ : trail is completely paved, however there is NO designated handicapped parking spots
🏃‍♀️ : beginner intenstity
🐶 : dog are allowed but must remain on leash
🚗 : only unmetered street parking
📸 : moderate, high if you like ducks though..
In order to not accidentally end up hiking up to Twin Lakes, if you started the loop path by going to the right first, when looking at the pond, I tend to take the left turn at the bridge when you get near the Parkway, to remain inside the loop of Mill Pond Park.
Now, some parks, have old mansions or the ruins of old mansions, some have lots of features like bird sanctuary habitats or or even plaques explaining local wildlife scattered around the trails; this is NOT any of those things. Mill Pond is very no frills, but that’s fine. Preserves like these serve a real purpose and a real service to the local community they reside in. Communities, especially in the monotonous suburbs, are absolutely worthless without diversity of nature and ecology. Honestly, who wants to live in a place where the only trees are between the sidewalk and the street and have to be cut back so as to not mess with your cable lines? The only time that's acceptable is when you live in a big city, and Wantagh is NOT a big city.

Parks are necessary. People need nature.
Tumblr media
Mill Pond really is nothing special. It has no discernible history that I could find and definitely no special features besides the beautiful pond that make it anymore exciting than its nearby counterparts, and yet, I come here often. I’ve seen some really cool birds here, the trees are really lovely and the paths are well maintained. I’m not sure what more you can ask for when you’re looking for just a simple and small dose of nature.
Tumblr media
The uniqueness of this park lies in the micro-ecosystem of Mill Pond and its plethora of waterfowl, and also how dangerously close a person can get to just walking directly onto the Wantagh Parkway… There are so many parks like this up in Westchester too and they really baffle me every time. Not even a low fence to step over….
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I digress… Mill Pond Preserve is a really well-maintained park, regardless of the time of year, and worth your time if you have a spare forty-five minutes and want to take in some easy and beautiful nature.
This does NOT make my “Run, Don’t Walk” list, but it’s being included so I obviously think it’s worth something.
Just a small and unusual P.S. for me:
I had to look this up, and I thought it would be nice to mention that Adam Rand was a local of Bellmore (the park is really on the border of the two towns) and a career firefighter who lost his life when the Twin Towers collapsed as he was trying to help evacuate people on September 11th and this park would be a fitting honor for anyone who was that much of a hero.

Pas de Trois: Part One
Tumblr media
Pairing: Reader x Noah, eventual Reader x Nicholas
Word Count: 2.3k
Warnings: None! (Yet)
I was just thinking, like: Swans, right? But Noah and Nicholas. No beta we die like Odette and Siegfried!
It was as cold in the beginning as it was in the end.
You could pretend all you wanted- that the embrace of a not-quite lover could warm you enough to stay alive. But you both knew better by now.
It starts the way it ends: at a pond.
You need a breather from your mother and her love schemes. Something about a party at the Van der Whatever’s condo on the east side, the unwed men rumored to be in attendance.
All those years of safeguarding your virginity like a crown jewel, only to be whored out to the first eligible bachelor the second you turned 23 and expressed no interest in marriage.
You roll your eyes at the thought of it; the idea of preserving your chastity whilst being surrounded by the scum of the earth in Bottega stilettos. It feels like you rub elbows with literal vampires most days: creatures that linger in the shadows, waiting to drain you of whatever they needed from you in that moment.
At least Bela Lugosi never asked you about why you decided against Yale after your father’s hefty (and unrequested) donation.
The air is crisp, biting at your cheeks as you walk. You wander into a familiar park near your apartment, the street lamps illuminating the freshly fallen snow in a gentle glow. All around you, trees creak and groan in the wind, as if they, too, were ready for spring again. It isn’t so secluded that you felt any real danger, but it was far enough away from the sounds of traffic to give your mind space to wander.
Faintly, you hear the sounds of people milling about on the street. There’s a theatre up the road- they’ve been hosting a ballet company performing The Nutcracker for the last month or so. Looking through the gaps in the bushes, you can spot a few people dressed in rich velvets and fur coats taking photos under the gleam of marquee lights. You haven’t gone to see The Nutcracker for years now. Your mother stopped taking you when you confessed that you did not have the talent- nor endurance- to be a real ballerina, the same time that she unenrolled you from dance classes altogether.
Humming Tchaikovsky's Pas de Deux to yourself, you meander through the park until you come upon a pond. A treasure in your heart, it’s a spot you come to often to clear your head- though this is your first nighttime foray.
Longer than it was wide, the pond was not the most impressive in the city by a longshot. Most people didn’t even know of its existence, save the few dog-walkers who came through in the mid-morning and late afternoon. It was familiar, though, having been situated here as far back as your memory could recall.
Winter crept over the small body of water in sheets of ice at the outer perimeter. If the temperature continued to drop (it would) the entire thing would be frozen solid by next week. As it was, the ice at the edges looked thick enough to hold up an entire person.
You fight back the melancholy this brings you, knowing the incoming freeze would take with it the many creatures that inhabit the pond. The ducks have long since left, flying somewhere further south, somewhere warmer. The fish have been awfully quiet the last few weeks as well, settling in for their winter rest. That really just left the-
Ah, You think, sounding hushed even in your head. There you are.
They glide in silently, slicing through the water like moonlight. Long, graceful necks with great plumes puffing up behind them, the swans are pure magic in the stillness of the night. They make a triangle in the water, with four smaller fowl following the swan at the crest of the formation. Its dark eyes meet yours for a moment, and you feel so utterly vulnerable under its gaze that you look away, suddenly very interested in your shoes.
Must you be intimidated by everything? You sigh to yourself internally. Seriously, a fucking bird?
You felt silly as you built the courage to finally look back up, but the bevy had disappeared. Craning your neck around, you were halfway to considering searching for them on foot when a branch cracked behind you.
Whirling around, your eyes scanned the tree line, pulling the mace on your keychain out with shaking hands. The neighborhood was safe, sure, but you weren’t stupid. A girl alone in a park well after the sun had set? Yeah, you’d seen the crime shows- no thanks.
“Hello?” You call, your voice wobbling despite your best efforts.
Another crack.
Your mace was up in an instant, poised and ready to fire. You are not a damsel in distress, you are certainly not going to be a statistic. As your heart pounded in your throat, a figure came into view.
“Ew, there’s bird shit everywhere- Woah!” The stranger stumbled backwards, hands up in the air as he saw you. “Oh my god, please don’t tase me-“
“It’s not a taser.” Was, for some reason, your first response. Then, “Who are you? What are you doing lurking around in the dark?”
His eyes went wide. “It’s a public park! I’m going for a walk!”
Your eyes narrow, the hand wielding the mace never moving. “A walk? At 9:45 at night?”
Impossibly, his eyes grew wider. They were dark- familiar in a way you couldn’t fully place in your panicked state. The snow reflects off of them, reminiscent of starlight. “You are also in the park at 9:45? And you’re armed?”
Well, that was certainly a valid observation. You take two deep breaths, then lower the mace, though not pocketing it entirely. You spend a moment observing his appearance.
He was tall- tall enough to be threatening, if he wanted to. Slim build, dark eyes, like you’d noted before. His hair was parted down the middle, brushing against the top of his cheekbones softly. He’s handsome, you think. Not the overly-manicured handsome you were accustomed to, though. He reminded you of the first dandelions in the spring; The delight you feel at seeing a living thing burst forth from the frozen ground, uncaring of if it's a weed or not.
A huge sweater encompassed him, something light in color and soft-looking. The sleeves poked out of the arm holes of his jacket in a strange way, as if it took a great deal of work to stuff them in there in the first place. A hat topped it all off, giant pom-pom bobbing at you in a way that was far from menacing.
“That’s a weird hat to wear while you creep on people in the park.” You quip, cocking an eyebrow at him.
His mouth drops open in shock. “My grandmother made me this, fuck you very much. And it’s winter! Of course I’m wearing a hat. Are you always this bad with logic and reason?”
“So you don’t deny creeping?” You ignored his question.
The face he gives you would have been comical under different circumstances. “Wha- Okay, look, I’m sorry for encroaching on your turf- even if that turf is city property-“ he mumbles the last bit to himself- “But I’m not like, a serial-killer-murderer. Pinky promise.”
He looks so earnest, it reminds you of a little kid. He is holding out a single pinky to you, a safe distance away.
You eye him warily for a second, then sigh, taking a few steps forward to interlock your pinky with his. He beams at you, smile as bright as the snow that began to silently fall around the two of you.
You introduce yourself, shifting on your feet in a way that feels awkward and uncomfortable, like you were suddenly too aware of your body’s movements.
“I’m Noah.” He offers warmly, cheeks and nose tinged a rosy pink from the winter air. The longer you look at him, the less intimidated you feel. He was still large- but in the way that the inflatable noodle-people outside of used car dealerships were large. He didn’t flail, necessarily, though. His movements seemed fluid, controlled. Where you were rigid from years of posturing amongst socialites, he was naturally elegant, as at ease under your gaze as the swans in the pond earlier.
Soft, your mind supplies. He looks soft.
His voice is gentle when he speaks again. “So, what brought you to the park in the middle of a blizzard?”
You try to resist the grin that creeps across your face; you fail miserably. “If you think this is a blizzard, you’re in for a shock come February.”
“Do you defer every question someone asks you, or am I just special?” His dark eyes are trained on you, head cocked to the side curiously. It wasn’t an attack- his expression was too open to be on the offense. He was genuinely waiting for your answer.
“I needed to get away from my mother.” You answer honestly, shrugging, though not meeting his gaze.
You can feel his eyes on you, though, searching for more. “You got into an argument?”
Shaking your head, you cast your eyes back to the pond, hoping to get another glimpse of the swans. “Not an argument. We have the same discussion every week, knowing fully well that we’ll disagree and end up screaming at each other.”
You have not felt… seen, like this, ever. You aren’t an adamant rule-follower, but you’re far from a rebel, too, allowing you to safely pass through life unnoticed. Even your mother only really seemed to remember you after your older sister had been married off to some fishing industry tycoon. To have a stranger see through your facade was unnerving.
“Disagreeing and screaming sounds like an argument to me.” He pushes, to which you hum noncommittally. Sensing your apprehension, he follows your line of sight to the pond instead. “The ducks left weeks ago.”
“I’m not looking for the ducks.” You answer shortly, perhaps a bit too harsh.
“Oh?” Is his only response.
It’s obvious he wants you to continue. This was a safer topic than your mother, so you yield to his piqued interest. “I like watching the swans. They were here earlier, but I think you scared them off.” Your eyes slide over to him slyly.
He scoffs, looking insulted. “The swans probably left because they were scared you’d mace them.”
You whirl on him, poking a finger into his chest. “The swans don’t lurk in the bushes at the park like a weirdo.”
His expression is unimpressed, but there’s a glimmer of amusement in his eyes. “No one was lurking. Besides,” He grabs the finger directed at him gently, guiding it down to your side. “You don’t make a good damsel in distress. Anyone trying to steal you would just bring you back when they figured out how mean you are.”
“I’ve been nothing but cordial.” You sniff, brows furrowing at him.
His smirk is a little overwhelming. “If this is you on your “Nice” setting, I’d hate to see you pissed off.”
“Stop pushing your luck, then.” You respond dryly. He throws his head back to laugh, and the sound makes you feel warmer in your coat.
You turn back to the pond, giving up on seeing the swans again tonight. You probably need to head home, anyways- you were expected at this stupid party, and suffering through it would be better than dealing with your mother’s nagging if you were absent. You let out a soft sigh, resigned to your fate.
“I should go.” You say to no one in particular.
You feel Noah’s eyes on you again. “Hey, don’t let me run you off. I can go if I’m bothering you-”
You shake your head, body turning to face him before you realize you’re moving. “No, it’s not you- really.” You offer what you hope is a kind smile. “I’m expected somewhere. My mother will be horribly cross with me if I’m not there.”
He’s giving you an understanding smile, eyes crinkling up at the edges. “Sounds like a real rager. Will I, uh-” He glances down at his shoes, kicking at the snow before continuing, “Will I get to see you again?”
The question genuinely startles you. You assumed your demeanor (and mace) would be off-putting enough for him to be quite happy not speaking to you from this moment forward, but he… wanted to see you again?
“I mean,” You stammer, unable to find your words, “I’ll be around. At the park. If you’re also around.”
When he looks up, his face is alight. “Okay, yeah. I’ll also be around. Near the swans.”
A grin sneaks its way onto your face, unbeknownst to you. “Yeah, near the swans.” You avert your gaze, needing to look anywhere but at his hopeful expression. “See ya, Noah.”
He calls out a goodbye, but you’ve already scurried past him, the heels of your boots clicking rapidly against the sidewalk as you make your escape. You don’t dare glance back.
Your home is a few minutes away, shorter than usual given the fact that you’re practically jogging through the winter night. By the time you’ve shut your front door behind you, you’re out of breath, chest rising and falling heavily.
Your mother appears from the kitchen, her usual expression of passive annoyance plastered on her face. She calls your name, as if she needs to get your attention when you’re the only two people in the room. “Where have you been? It’s been snowing for half an hour, you’re going to catch a cold. And your boots are covered in mud- for heaven’s sake, really, we need to leave soon. Why are you grinning like that?”
You don’t register the smile on your face, still panting. Schooling your features into neutrality, you mutter out a quick, “I’m going to change clothes, be down in a sec.”
She’s ranting about punctuality and manners, but you barely hear it as you run up the stairs, grin overcoming your features once more as you think about dark eyes and soft smiles.

Headcanons: Re-Rolled
[Decided to rework some of my ghoul lore because sometimes ya gotta change things up to keep it fresh.] Below the cut.
-Ghouls are created through a very specific ritual that requires a connection to be made on both sides of the veil. What is given must be equivalent to what is taken, and it is very, very, very easy to fuck it up.
The ritual is altered slightly if the church is attempting to summon a specific element, but there must always be a human vessel ready to accept and contain the summoned demonic entity... unfortunately, sometimes it can be hard to find someone willing to take on such a task, and part of the rites require the vessel to consent to the transformation.
However, the vessel needn't always be a living, breathing human for it to work, so oftentimes if a member of the church passes before their time, their body can be repurposed in this way so long as they consented to its use prior to death.
-One other work around the church has discovered, one which works... ehn... a solid 13% of the time... is using cremated remains instead of a live person or a corpse.
It has a very low success rate, which is why when it does work, the church tends to give those ghouls specific jobs and titles to keep track of them, because along with being rare, they also tend to be a little... odd.
There have been five ghouls summoned this way in the known history of the church; Special, Cowbell, Swiss, Dewdrop, and most recently Sunshine.
For some reason these ghouls tend to either lack a primary element (Special and Cowbell), have two (Dewdrop), or can swap between elements at will (Swiss and Sunshine).
Special primarily works behind the scenes and is eerily good at event planning and design, Cowbell is retired, or as retired as a demonic entity can be, and generally just mills about the abbey's grounds helping take care of the plants and doesn't say much or socialize very often, and the other three are experiencing Band Life at the moment.
-Dew didn't talk for the first few months after he was summoned, so when Alpha was messing with him one day, and he unleashed a stream of curse words, everybody was shocked.
His first words, as recorded by Omega in order to preserve the moment, were, "You bitch-ass motherfucker."
Which is quite the contrast between his actual first words from when he was a kit, which were, "That's fishy."
-Ghouls, being at least partially human, can reproduce with humans, but due to how their species functions, they're only fertile during specific parts of the year, and are essentially incapable of getting someone pregnant unless it's during that time, so very few kits are accidents, although historically speaking there have been one or two... incidents.
-When Rain was first summoned, he kept trying to sleep in the abbey's indoor swimming pool... facedown. After too many reports of a "corpse" floating in the water, it was decided Rain should have his own little pond to sleep in instead.
Sometimes Dew will join him and they'll both arrive at breakfast in the morning sopping wet.
And lastly;
-Ghouls tend to form packs for safety/security, but have also been known to bond with inanimate objects as well.
For example, the roomba is considered a "friend", the regular vacuum, however, is a monster and needs to be killed.

It can be a wise choice to hire experienced roof painters in Mill Park if you want to protect the property's roof while preserving its usefulness. Some local professional painters are experts in applying top-quality paints and cutting-edge techniques to keep aesthetics and increase valuation within a certain budget.
When anyone is hiring local professional house painters in Moosee Ponds, they can get some advantages such as their expertise, experience, quality workmanship, long-lasting results, enhance the curb appeal of the property, and safety as well.

5 Reasons for Hiring Local Property Painting Professionals:
Usually, local professional roof painters have years of industry experience, expertise, extensive training and possess the necessary skills to handle various types of roofs efficiently.
They know the best techniques and products to deliver exceptional results for a variety of roof types such as tiles, metal, or any other materials.
They pay attention to detail, ensuring thorough preparation of the roof surface, including cleaning, repairs, and priming, before applying the paint. This detailed work approach results in a flawless finish and enhances the overall appearance of the property.
They use premium quality paints and coatings, specifically designed for the harsh Australian climate. These products come with superior durability, weather resistance, and long-lasting protection against UV rays, rain, wind, and other environmental factors.
A freshly painted roof can enhance the curb appeal of any property significantly, and boost its value and attractiveness. They can help clients get a well-maintained and perfectly painted roof to create a positive impression that sets the property apart from the rest.
Roof painting itself is a risky task, especially if anyone is not skilled enough and not equipped with the right tools and safety gear. Professional roof painters are trained to handle risks, and have insurance to avoid creating inconvenience to their clients.
Overall, property owners should invest in a professional roof painting specialist to extend the lifespan of the roof and avoid premature damage.

Tetherow Resort - A Memorable Experience
Tumblr media
Tetherow Resort is a premier destination just a few minutes from the vibrant downtown and Old Mill District of Bend, Oregon. Carved into the heart of the captivating Central Oregon landscape, built in the area of the 1990 Awbrey Hall Fire site, this exceptional resort offers a unique blend of world-class amenities, exquisite accommodations, and an unrivaled golf experience. Boasting a stunning 18-hole championship golf course designed by David McLay Kidd. David McLay Kidd, known for having a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of the game, has crafted some of the most visually stunning and challenging courses across the globe. His passion for creating unique and strategic layouts has earned him a reputation as a visionary in the field. From the iconic Bandon Dunes in Oregon to the picturesque Gamble Sands in Washington, Kidd's designs showcase his commitment to preserving the natural landscape while offering golfers an unforgettable experience. When it first opened in 2008, Tetherow was recognized as the top Best New Course You Can Play in the country by Golf Magazine and since has received recognition from almost every major golf publication. Kidd's ability to seamlessly integrate the natural features of a site into his designs, coupled with his expertise in crafting memorable holes, has kept Tetherow rated as a Top 100 course by Golf Digest year after year. The stunning Cascade peaks, including Three Sisters and Broken Top, and the rugged high desert terrain are expertly showcased throughout the course, providing unparalleled panoramic views. For any golfer seeking a formidable test, a round at Tetherow is an absolute must. Locals call it Death Row, and it is easy to understand why; Tetherow is HARD. You will either love it or hate it, but it will be one of the most exciting rounds of golf you will ever play. The rollercoaster ride begins after the relatively simple 381-yard par-4 (Tan Tees) first hole with the 2nd, a 514-yard par-5 that requires plenty of creativity to avoid the trouble lurking all the way to the massive rolling green complex. As you make your way across the stunning bridge towards the third hole, you'll be treated to a breathtaking view of the majestic Mt. Bachelor and its snow-capped summit in the distance. This is the perfect backdrop for playing Kidd's Corner, a four-hole loop that plays around a pond. The third hole is a challenging par-3, requiring a long forced carry-over water to reach a sizable green positioned behind a foreboding pot bunker. The green's raised back portion is guarded by sharp and steep ridges, posing a challenge for any putt. The first hole of a four-hole stretch known as Kidd's Corner, the par-3 third, is one of the most beautiful and challenging shots at Tetherow, with water all along the left side and bunkers in front and back of the green. The last hole of Kidd's Corner is the par-4 6th with a split fairway, creating two distinct sides. The landing area on the right side is elevated and interspersed with rocky outcrops and areas of desert sage wasteland. It will result in a challenging blind approach to an elevated green. The riskier tee shot is to play to the fairway's lower left side and hug the pond's edge. This is rewarded with a clearer look at the green and more room for error in the approach. As you move to the back nine, an exciting drivable par 4 awaits you. The tee shot slopes downhill, and a precise drive through a narrow opening is necessary for success. A vast bunker on the front left can capture any shots hit offline. On the right, a small but tricky pot bunker tends to collect shots that fall short of the green. The par-4 11th is a tremendously well-designed challenge; the dogleg right plays into a bowled fairway framed with high sand and sagebrush sides. A sentinel tree at the right corner must be avoided, so shaping your drive around it is paramount to a successful tee shot. Completing a round at Tetherow may leave you feeling beat down, whether you loved it or hated it. But either way, you WILL want to play it again. If you loved it, you will be pumped and ready to give it another go. If you hated it, you will be eager to get back out there for a do-over and not let the course get the best of you. Magna Carta, 1215
JOHN, by the grace of God King of England, Lord of Ireland, Duke of Normandy and Aquitaine, and Count of Anjou, to his archbishops, bishops, abbots, earls, barons, justices, foresters, sheriffs, stewards, servants, and to all his officials and loyal subjects, Greeting.
KNOW THAT BEFORE GOD, for the health of our soul and those of our ancestors and heirs, to the honour of God, the exaltation of the holy Church, and the better ordering of our kingdom, at the advice of our reverend fathers Stephen, archbishop of Canterbury, primate of all England, and cardinal of the holy Roman Church, Henry archbishop of Dublin, William bishop of London, Peter bishop of Winchester, Jocelin bishop of Bath and Glastonbury, Hugh bishop of Lincoln, Walter bishop of Worcester, William bishop of Coventry, Benedict bishop of Rochester, Master Pandulf subdeacon and member of the papal household, Brother Aymeric master of the knighthood of the Temple in England, William Marshal earl of Pembroke, William earl of Salisbury, William earl of Warren, William earl of Arundel, Alan of Galloway constable of Scotland, Warin fitz Gerald, Peter fitz Herbert, Hubert de Burgh seneschal of Poitou, Hugh de Neville, Matthew fitz Herbert, Thomas Basset, Alan Basset, Philip Daubeny, Robert de Roppeley, John Marshal, John fitz Hugh, and other loyal subjects:
+ (1) FIRST, THAT WE HAVE GRANTED TO GOD, and by this present charter have confirmed for us and our heirs in perpetuity, that the English Church shall be free, and shall have its rights undiminished, and its liberties unimpaired. That we wish this so to be observed, appears from the fact that of our own free will, before the outbreak of the present dispute between us and our barons, we granted and confirmed by charter the freedom of the Church's elections - a right reckoned to be of the greatest necessity and importance to it - and caused this to be confirmed by Pope Innocent III. This freedom we shall observe ourselves, and desire to be observed in good faith by our heirs in perpetuity.
TO ALL FREE MEN OF OUR KINGDOM we have also granted, for us and our heirs for ever, all the liberties written out below, to have and to keep for them and their heirs, of us and our heirs:
(2) If any earl, baron, or other person that holds lands directly of the Crown, for military service, shall die, and at his death his heir shall be of full age and owe a 'relief', the heir shall have his inheritance on payment of the ancient scale of 'relief'. That is to say, the heir or heirs of an earl shall pay £100 for the entire earl's barony, the heir or heirs of a knight 100s. at most for the entire knight's 'fee', and any man that owes less shall pay less, in accordance with the ancient usage of 'fees'.
(3) But if the heir of such a person is under age and a ward, when he comes of age he shall have his inheritance without 'relief' or fine.
(4) The guardian of the land of an heir who is under age shall take from it only reasonable revenues, customary dues, and feudal services. He shall do this without destruction or damage to men or property. If we have given the guardianship of the land to a sheriff, or to any person answerable to us for the revenues, and he commits destruction or damage, we will exact compensation from him, and the land shall be entrusted to two worthy and prudent men of the same 'fee', who shall be answerable to us for the revenues, or to the person to whom we have assigned them. If we have given or sold to anyone the guardianship of such land, and he causes destruction or damage, he shall lose the guardianship of it, and it shall be handed over to two worthy and prudent men of the same 'fee', who shall be similarly answerable to us.
Tumblr media
(5) For so long as a guardian has guardianship of such land, he shall maintain the houses, parks, fish preserves, ponds, mills, and everything else pertaining to it, from the revenues of the land itself. When the heir comes of age, he shall restore the whole land to him, stocked with plough teams and such implements of husbandry as the season demands and the revenues from the land can reasonably bear.
(6) Heirs may be given in marriage, but not to someone of lower social standing. Before a marriage takes place, it shall be made known to the heir's next-of-kin.
(7) At her husband's death, a widow may have her marriage portion and inheritance at once and without trouble. She shall pay nothing for her dower, marriage portion, or any inheritance that she and her husband held jointly on the day of his death. She may remain in her husband's house for forty days after his death, and within this period her dower shall be assigned to her.
(8) No widow shall be compelled to marry, so long as she wishes to remain without a husband. But she must give security that she will not marry without royal consent, if she holds her lands of the Crown, or without the consent of whatever other lord she may hold them of.
(9) Neither we nor our officials will seize any land or rent in payment of a debt, so long as the debtor has movable goods sufficient to discharge the debt. A debtor's sureties shall not be distrained upon so long as the debtor himself can discharge his debt. If, for lack of means, the debtor is unable to discharge his debt, his sureties shall be answerable for it. If they so desire, they may have the debtor's lands and rents until they have received satisfaction for the debt that they paid for him, unless the debtor can show that he has settled his obligations to them.
* (10) If anyone who has borrowed a sum of money from Jews dies before the debt has been repaid, his heir shall pay no interest on the debt for so long as he remains under age, irrespective of whom he holds his lands. If such a debt falls into the hands of the Crown, it will take nothing except the principal sum specified in the bond.
* (11) If a man dies owing money to Jews, his wife may have her dower and pay nothing towards the debt from it. If he leaves children that are under age, their needs may also be provided for on a scale appropriate to the size of his holding of lands. The debt is to be paid out of the residue, reserving the service due to his feudal lords. Debts owed to persons other than Jews are to be dealt with similarly.
* (12) No 'scutage' or 'aid' may be levied in our kingdom without its general consent, unless it is for the ransom of our person, to make our eldest son a knight, and (once) to marry our eldest daughter. For these purposes only a reasonable 'aid' may be levied. 'Aids' from the city of London are to be treated similarly.
+ (13) The city of London shall enjoy all its ancient liberties and free customs, both by land and by water. We also will and grant that all other cities, boroughs, towns, and ports shall enjoy all their liberties and free customs.
* (14) To obtain the general consent of the realm for the assessment of an 'aid' - except in the three cases specified above - or a 'scutage', we will cause the archbishops, bishops, abbots, earls, and greater barons to be summoned individually by letter. To those who hold lands directly of us we will cause a general summons to be issued, through the sheriffs and other officials, to come together on a fixed day (of which at least forty days notice shall be given) and at a fixed place. In all letters of summons, the cause of the summons will be stated. When a summons has been issued, the business appointed for the day shall go forward in accordance with the resolution of those present, even if not all those who were summoned have appeared.
* (15) In future we will allow no one to levy an 'aid' from his free men, except to ransom his person, to make his eldest son a knight, and (once) to marry his eldest daughter. For these purposes only a reasonable 'aid' may be levied.
(16) No man shall be forced to perform more service for a knight's 'fee', or other free holding of land, than is due from it.
(17) Ordinary lawsuits shall not follow the royal court around, but shall be held in a fixed place.
(18) Inquests of novel disseisin, mort d'ancestor, and darrein presentment shall be taken only in their proper county court. We ourselves, or in our absence abroad our chief justice, will send two justices to each county four times a year, and these justices, with four knights of the county elected by the county itself, shall hold the assizes in the county court, on the day and in the place where the court meets.
(19) If any assizes cannot be taken on the day of the county court, as many knights and freeholders shall afterwards remain behind, of those who have attended the court, as will suffice for the administration of justice, having regard to the volume of business to be done.
(20) For a trivial offence, a free man shall be fined only in proportion to the degree of his offence, and for a serious offence correspondingly, but not so heavily as to deprive him of his livelihood. In the same way, a merchant shall be spared his merchandise, and a villein the implements of his husbandry, if they fall upon the mercy of a royal court. None of these fines shall be imposed except by the assessment on oath of reputable men of the neighbourhood.
(21) Earls and barons shall be fined only by their equals, and in proportion to the gravity of their offence.
(22) A fine imposed upon the lay property of a clerk in holy orders shall be assessed upon the same principles, without reference to the value of his ecclesiastical benefice.
Tumblr media
(23) No town or person shall be forced to build bridges over rivers except those with an ancient obligation to do so.
(24) No sheriff, constable, coroners, or other royal officials are to hold lawsuits that should be held by the royal justices.
* (25) Every county, hundred, wapentake, and tithing shall remain at its ancient rent, without increase, except the royal demesne manors.
(26) If at the death of a man who holds a lay 'fee' of the Crown, a sheriff or royal official produces royal letters patent of summons for a debt due to the Crown, it shall be lawful for them to seize and list movable goods found in the lay 'fee' of the dead man to the value of the debt, as assessed by worthy men. Nothing shall be removed until the whole debt is paid, when the residue shall be given over to the executors to carry out the dead man’s will. If no debt is due to the Crown, all the movable goods shall be regarded as the property of the dead man, except the reasonable shares of his wife and children.
* (27) If a free man dies intestate, his movable goods are to be distributed by his next-of-kin and friends, under the supervision of the Church. The rights of his debtors are to be preserved.
(28) No constable or other royal official shall take corn or other movable goods from any man without immediate payment, unless the seller voluntarily offers postponement of this.
(29) No constable may compel a knight to pay money for castle-guard if the knight is willing to undertake the guard in person, or with reasonable excuse to supply some other fit man to do it. A knight taken or sent on military service shall be excused from castle-guard for the period of this service.
(30) No sheriff, royal official, or other person shall take horses or carts for transport from any free man, without his consent.
(31) Neither we nor any royal official will take wood for our castle, or for any other purpose, without the consent of the owner.
(32) We will not keep the lands of people convicted of felony in our hand for longer than a year and a day, after which they shall be returned to the lords of the 'fees' concerned.
(33) All fish-weirs shall be removed from the Thames, the Medway, and throughout the whole of England, except on the sea coast.
(34) The writ called precipe shall not in future be issued to anyone in respect of any holding of land, if a free man could thereby be deprived of the right of trial in his own lord's court.
(35) There shall be standard measures of wine, ale, and corn (the London quarter), throughout the kingdom. There shall also be a standard width of dyed cloth, russet, and haberject, namely two ells within the selvedges. Weights are to be standardised similarly.
(36) In future nothing shall be paid or accepted for the issue of a writ of inquisition of life or limbs. It shall be given gratis, and not refused.
(37) If a man holds land of the Crown by 'fee-farm', 'socage', or 'burgage', and also holds land of someone else for knight's service, we will not have guardianship of his heir, nor of the land that belongs to the other person's 'fee', by virtue of the 'fee-farm', 'socage', or 'burgage', unless the 'fee-farm' owes knight's service. We will not have the guardianship of a man's heir, or of land that he holds of someone else, by reason of any small property that he may hold of the Crown for a service of knives, arrows, or the like.
(38) In future no official shall place a man on trial upon his own unsupported statement, without producing credible witnesses to the truth of it.
+ (39) No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land.
+ (40) To no one will we sell, to no one deny or delay right or justice.
(41) All merchants may enter or leave England unharmed and without fear, and may stay or travel within it, by land or water, for purposes of trade, free from all illegal exactions, in accordance with ancient and lawful customs. This, however, does not apply in time of war to merchants from a country that is at war with us. Any such merchants found in our country at the outbreak of war shall be detained without injury to their persons or property, until we or our chief justice have discovered how our own merchants are being treated in the country at war with us. If our own merchants are safe they shall be safe too.
* (42) In future it shall be lawful for any man to leave and return to our kingdom unharmed and without fear, by land or water, preserving his allegiance to us, except in time of war, for some short period, for the common benefit of the realm. People that have been imprisoned or outlawed in accordance with the law of the land, people from a country that is at war with us, and merchants - who shall be dealt with as stated above - are excepted from this provision.
(43) If a man holds lands of any 'escheat' such as the 'honour' of Wallingford, Nottingham, Boulogne, Lancaster, or of other 'escheats' in our hand that are baronies, at his death his heir shall give us only the 'relief' and service that he would have made to the baron, had the barony been in the baron's hand. We will hold the 'escheat' in the same manner as the baron held it.
(44) People who live outside the forest need not in future appear before the royal justices of the forest in answer to general summonses, unless they are actually involved in proceedings or are sureties for someone who has been seized for a forest offence.
* (45) We will appoint as justices, constables, sheriffs, or other officials, only men that know the law of the realm and are minded to keep it well.
(46) All barons who have founded abbeys, and have charters of English kings or ancient tenure as evidence of this, may have guardianship of them when there is no abbot, as is their due.
(47) All forests that have been created in our reign shall at once be disafforested. River-banks that have been enclosed in our reign shall be treated similarly.
*(48) All evil customs relating to forests and warrens, foresters, warreners, sheriffs and their servants, or river-banks and their wardens, are at once to be investigated in every county by twelve sworn knights of the county, and within forty days of their enquiry the evil customs are to be abolished completely and irrevocably. But we, or our chief justice if we are not in England, are first to be informed.
* (49) We will at once return all hostages and charters delivered up to us by Englishmen as security for peace or for loyal service.
* (50) We will remove completely from their offices the kinsmen of Gerard de Athée, and in future they shall hold no offices in England. The people in question are Engelard de Cigogné, Peter, Guy, and Andrew de Chanceaux, Guy de Cigogné, Geoffrey de Martigny and his brothers, Philip Marc and his brothers, with Geoffrey his nephew, and all their followers.
* (51) As soon as peace is restored, we will remove from the kingdom all the foreign knights, bowmen, their attendants, and the mercenaries that have come to it, to its harm, with horses and arms.
* (52) To any man whom we have deprived or dispossessed of lands, castles, liberties, or rights, without the lawful judgment of his equals, we will at once restore these. In cases of dispute the matter shall be resolved by the judgment of the twenty-five barons referred to below in the clause for securing the peace (§61). In cases, however, where a man was deprived or dispossessed of something without the lawful judgment of his equals by our father King Henry or our brother King Richard, and it remains in our hands or is held by others under our warranty, we shall have respite for the period commonly allowed to Crusaders, unless a lawsuit had been begun, or an enquiry had been made at our order, before we took the Cross as a Crusader. On our return from the Crusade, or if we abandon it, we will at once render justice in full.
* (53) We shall have similar respite in rendering justice in connexion with forests that are to be disafforested, or to remain forests, when these were first afforested by our father Henry or our brother Richard; with the guardianship of lands in another person's 'fee', when we have hitherto had this by virtue of a 'fee' held of us for knight's service by a third party; and with abbeys founded in another person's 'fee', in which the lord of the 'fee' claims to own a right. On our return from the Crusade, or if we abandon it, we will at once do full justice to complaints about these matters.
(54) No one shall be arrested or imprisoned on the appeal of a woman for the death of any person except her husband.
* (55) All fines that have been given to us unjustly and against the law of the land, and all fines that we have exacted unjustly, shall be entirely remitted or the matter decided by a majority judgment of the twenty-five barons referred to below in the clause for securing the peace (§61) together with Stephen, archbishop of Canterbury, if he can be present, and such others as he wishes to bring with him. If the archbishop cannot be present, proceedings shall continue without him, provided that if any of the twenty-five barons has been involved in a similar suit himself, his judgment shall be set aside, and someone else chosen and sworn in his place, as a substitute for the single occasion, by the rest of the twenty-five.
(56) If we have deprived or dispossessed any Welshmen of land, liberties, or anything else in England or in Wales, without the lawful judgment of their equals, these are at once to be returned to them. A dispute on this point shall be determined in the Marches by the judgment of equals. English law shall apply to holdings of land in England, Welsh law to those in Wales, and the law of the Marches to those in the Marches. The Welsh shall treat us and ours in the same way.
* (57) In cases where a Welshman was deprived or dispossessed of anything, without the lawful judgment of his equals, by our father King Henry or our brother King Richard, and it remains in our hands or is held by others under our warranty, we shall have respite for the period commonly allowed to Crusaders, unless a lawsuit had been begun, or an enquiry had been made at our order, before we took the Cross as a Crusader. But on our return from the Crusade, or if we abandon it, we will at once do full justice according to the laws of Wales and the said regions.
* (58) We will at once return the son of Llywelyn, all Welsh hostages, and the charters delivered to us as security for the peace.
* (59) With regard to the return of the sisters and hostages of Alexander, king of Scotland, his liberties and his rights, we will treat him in the same way as our other barons of England, unless it appears from the charters that we hold from his father William, formerly king of Scotland, that he should be treated otherwise. This matter shall be resolved by the judgment of his equals in our court.
(60) All these customs and liberties that we have granted shall be observed in our kingdom in so far as concerns our own relations with our subjects. Let all men of our kingdom, whether clergy or laymen, observe them similarly in their relations with their own men.
* (61) SINCE WE HAVE GRANTED ALL THESE THINGS for God, for the better ordering of our kingdom, and to allay the discord that has arisen between us and our barons, and since we desire that they shall be enjoyed in their entirety, with lasting strength, for ever, we give and grant to the barons the following security:
The barons shall elect twenty-five of their number to keep, and cause to be observed with all their might, the peace and liberties granted and confirmed to them by this charter.
If we, our chief justice, our officials, or any of our servants offend in any respect against any man, or transgress any of the articles of the peace or of this security, and the offence is made known to four of the said twenty-five barons, they shall come to us – or in our absence from the kingdom to the chief justice – to declare it and claim immediate redress. If we, or in our absence abroad the chief justice, make no redress within forty days, reckoning from the day on which the offence was declared to us or to him, the four barons shall refer the matter to the rest of the twenty-five barons, who may distrain upon and assail us in every way possible, with the support of the whole community of the land, by seizing our castles, lands, possessions, or anything else saving only our own person and those of the queen and our children, until they have secured such redress as they have determined upon. Having secured the redress, they may then resume their normal obedience to us.
Any man who so desires may take an oath to obey the commands of the twenty-five barons for the achievement of these ends, and to join with them in assailing us to the utmost of his power. We give public and free permission to take this oath to any man who so desires, and at no time will we prohibit any man from taking it. Indeed, we will compel any of our subjects who are unwilling to take it to swear it at our command.
If one of the twenty-five barons dies or leaves the country, or is prevented in any other way from discharging his duties, the rest of them shall choose another baron in his place, at their discretion, who shall be duly sworn in as they were.
In the event of disagreement among the twenty-five barons on any matter referred to them for decision, the verdict of the majority present shall have the same validity as a unanimous verdict of the whole twenty-five, whether these were all present or some of those summoned were unwilling or unable to appear.
The twenty-five barons shall swear to obey all the above articles faithfully, and shall cause them to be obeyed by others to the best of their power.
We will not seek to procure from anyone, either by our own efforts or those of a third party, anything by which any part of these concessions or liberties might be revoked or diminished. Should such a thing be procured, it shall be null and void and we will at no time make use of it, either ourselves or through a third party.
* (62) We have remitted and pardoned fully to all men any ill-will, hurt, or grudges that have arisen between us and our subjects, whether clergy or laymen, since the beginning of the dispute. We have in addition remitted fully, and for our own part have also pardoned, to all clergy and laymen any offences committed as a result of the said dispute between Easter in the sixteenth year of our reign (i.e. 1215) and the restoration of peace.
In addition we have caused letters patent to be made for the barons, bearing witness to this security and to the concessions set out above, over the seals of Stephen archbishop of Canterbury, Henry archbishop of Dublin, the other bishops named above, and Master Pandulf.
* (63) IT IS ACCORDINGLY OUR WISH AND COMMAND that the English Church shall be free, and that men in our kingdom shall have and keep all these liberties, rights, and concessions, well and peaceably in their fullness and entirety for them and their heirs, of us and our heirs, in all things and all places for ever.
Both we and the barons have sworn that all this shall be observed in good faith and without deceit. Witness the abovementioned people and many others.
Given by our hand in the meadow that is called Runnymede, between Windsor and Staines, on the fifteenth day of June in the seventeenth year of our reign (i.e. 1215: the new regnal year began on 28 May)

Krippendorf Estate (Lob's Wood)
Krippendorf Lodge Rd.
Milford, OH 45150
Built in 1900, Krippendorf Lodge in Union Township, Clermont County, southwest of Perintown OH, is sited on more than 1,000 acres of spectacular forests, fields, streams and ponds. Corporate guests, in particular, enjoy the option of including time for a relaxing hike through the woods as part of a business retreat. From enchanting spring wildflowers to the dazzling colors of autumn, the ever-changing beauty of nature will provide your guests with an unforgettable event. Carl Krippendorf was born in Cincinnati in 1875 to German immigrants. His father was the founder and president of the Krippendorf-Dittman shoe company.
When young Carl became ill with Typhoid, his doctor counseled with the Krippendorf family to send Carl away from the dirty air of the city. A country doctor living in Perintown, Ohio, agreed to house Carl for the summer. Thus began Carl's love affair with nature. Perintown is just a short walk to the north part of Rowe Woods, little more than 1/2 mile up a steep hill. It was a very large town at that time. With a huge flower and yeast mills. Also logging was a large industry of the area.
In 1898, Carl Krippendorf purchased 97 acres of the land where he spent the summer recuperating to preserve it from becoming a tobacco field. In the heart of his beloved woods, Carl built a home for his new bride, Mary, where they lived for 64 years and raised a family with daughter Rosan. Carl and Mary invited everyone they knew to experience the land they loved and originally named Karlsruhe Gardens, meaning “Karl’s place of peace,” the name is changed affectionately to Lob’s Wood after World War I It has often been said that no one left the Krippendorf property empty handed. Carl was known to give daffodil, Lycoris, and other bulbs to his visitors.
Rosan ( Krippendorf ) Adams sold Lob's Woods to Stan Rowe and the other people who founded Rowe Woods, the original site of the Cincinnati Nature Center. To this day the Rowe Woods is full of early spring flowers that bloom throughout the Woodlands. The herb garden and water tower still stand. To this day the Krippendorf Lodge has thousands of daffodils, and the beautiful Beech, Ash, and Maple woods continue to preserve the Carl and Mary Krippendorf's legacy at Rowe Woods in Milford. Sadly the Ash trees are all dying due to Emerald Ash Bore that are infesting the trees. In about 10 years there will no more Ash Trees.
Carl and Mary Krippendorf left behind a beautiful foundation for the place now known as Rowe Woods. For this all can be very thankful for such a paradise so close to the city, yet so far away from the city. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 15, 2011. On the grounds of the Cincinnati Nature Center at Rowe Woods, the main house is a circa 1899 Shingle-style building; other contributing structures include an ice house, a laundry/maid's quarters, a garage and a water tower.

Gold King Mansion in Mohave County, Arizona The Gold King Mansion sits in the Hualapai Mountains in Mohave County, Arizona. Construction on the mansion began in 1930, shortly after a strike had been made on the land in April 1929 and a claim was made to it in July of the same year. Progress was swift; a camp and road connected to the county highway were built to support the growing operation. As the mine grew, so did expectations as the mine operator, P. M. Woods, reported the company was to install a “big hoist,” “a big gas engine and a compressor… sufficient to operate the drills and pumps,” and an onsite ore mill. The prospective growth of the mine was enticing to financiers who rushed to invest.  At the end of August 1930, the company announced the building "the first of a series of model bunk houses, using reinforced concrete construction." The houses were, according to the mine superintendent, to "contain an adequate sleeping room to accommodate several miners, a modern bathroom, and be provided with electric light." Multiple of these bunkhouses was intended to be constructed but come October 1930, the mine found a large workforce unnecessary as the mine resulted in only one of the buildings being constructed. In 1933, a local rancher John Odie visited the mine and found that the mansion was not used to shelter miners as originally intended. Odie claimed the owners “would take prospective stock buyers up there and wine and dine them and put them up in the house." The estate was also furnished less like a miner's quarters and more akin to a resort with elaborate crown molding, copper screen windows, and a concrete fishing pond off the east side of the building.  The mine was not nearly as successful as it once was projected to be as their starting capital of $1 million in 1930 was whittled down to $700,000 in 1933 when the last of the mining took place for the decade. Despite inactivity between 1934 and 1941, interest in the mine resurged with the beginning of WWII and P. M. Woods resumed operation with a small crew in October 1942. The mine continued to operate through the war and produced gold, silver, lead, and zinc in small quantities. The mine was in use until 1947 but due to economic changes post-war and the death of P. M. Woods in 1948, the property was in limbo. In 1972, Mohave County historian Roman Malach described the condition of the property and that all doors, windows, and wooden trim had been pilfered but that the ornate fireplace still remained. In 1980 another historian, Joe Blackstock, returned to find the fireplace stolen. Vandalism has remained an issue for the property but Site Stewards and the BLM have taken steps to maintain and preserve it. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/gold-king-mansion

– EPA Area 7 Characteristic – By Rachael Puleo, Superfund and Division of Emergency Administration EPA Area 7 has made vital progress in remediating contaminated areas in southeastern Missouri to assist revitalize the setting and shield human well being from the consequences of lead-contaminated waste from historic mining. Lead in our historical past Map exhibiting the boundaries of seven NPL websites in SEMO. (US EPA chart) Because the world's main producer of heavy steel ores for a lot of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Southeastern Missouri (SEMO) possessed a number of the largest lead deposits on the planet in a area generally known as Previous Lead Belt. The primary deposits of lead ore had been found there by French explorers within the late sixteenth century. Mining for lead and different related metals started in 1720 and remains to be occurring at this time. Over time, the makes use of of lead have developed from a preservative in wine throughout the Roman Empire to an additive in paint and gasoline within the twentieth century. As we speak about 90% of lead is utilized in batteries, principally for vehicles. Lead's resistance to corrosion drastically enhances its power and sturdiness, making it a coveted materials and one of many earliest metals identified to people. Ore deposits within the area happen primarily within the Bonne Terre Formation, which is made up primarily of dolomite, a sedimentary carbonate rock. The primary mining operations had been excavations (hand-dug shafts or pits) to extract residual minerals from shallow soils, normally lower than 20 toes deep. Pits had been dug all the way down to bedrock, the place minerals are generally concentrated, and the fabric was delivered to the floor utilizing picks, shovels and buckets. Over time, mining and excavation methods superior, permitting a lot bigger quantities of ore to be delivered to the floor and refined. The US Geological Survey estimates that greater than 8.5 million tons of pure lead have been produced within the Previous Lead Belt. Uncooked supplies in giant portions have been excavated, delivered to the floor, floor, refined and melted down into virtually pure metallic merchandise. Nevertheless, in depth mining actions in 5 counties in SEMO produced vital quantities of waste byproducts containing poisonous steel residues, resulting in widespread contamination of native soil, groundwater, floor water, and sediment. Leftover sludge from milling, generally known as tailings, was sometimes pumped into tailings ponds for disposal, whereas host rock fragments separated from ores had been dumped alongside conveyor belts to create scrap heaps. The lead nonetheless stays As communities had been constructed round mining operations, lead poisoning grew to become a extra critical concern. So far, EPA Area 7 has designated seven SEMO Superfund websites the place ranges of lead and associated metals have been recognized as posing an unacceptable threat to human well being and the setting. (See SEMO map above). These websites had been positioned on the EPA checklist Nationwide Priorities Checklist (NPL) between 1992 and 2017, and embrace: Southwest Jefferson County Mining, Madison County Mines, Huge River Mine Tailings, and 4 websites inside the primary district of Washington County (Furnace Creek, Previous Mines, Potosi, and Richwoods). EPA has additionally undertaken early cleanup actions at two different websites within the space that aren't at the moment within the NPL, that are the Annapolis Lead Mine Superfund Web site in Iron County and the Viburnum Development Lead Superfund Web site. Haul Roads in and round Viburnum, Missouri. Lead Cleanup Efforts So far, Area 7 has cleared almost 8,500 residential properties in SEMO. This totals slightly over 2 million cubic yards of residential land, which is the scale of almost 100 soccer fields stuffed to pole top (10 toes tall!).
Residential properties are outlined as residential yards, public use areas, and excessive little one use areas (akin to little one care services, public parks, playgrounds, and different public leisure areas). Lead remediation on a residential property close to the Previous Mines web site in Washington County, Missouri. (Photograph credit score: US EPA) If soil sampling outcomes point out that a property is eligible for remediation beneath the Report of Choice (ROD) for that web site, the property proprietor might request remediation of their yard at no cost by signing an entry settlement of remediation. Cleanups embrace the excavation of contaminated soil, gravel, or different yard gadgets that exceed EPA residential lead cleanup ranges as outlined within the ROD. Excavated materials is transported off-property to a repository, the place it's consolidated and held in a managed disposal facility to forestall future releases and redistribution of contamination. EPA then replaces the panorama with clear grime or gravel (fill) and revegetates the panorama with sod and hydroseeds to revive it as near its authentic situation (grade and contour) as doable. In affected areas, EPA additionally gives free testing of residential wells for heavy steel contamination in groundwater from historic mining actions. Each groundwater and soil remediation are important to establish elevated blood lead ranges in weak populations akin to kids. EPA provides free soil and nicely water testing, carried out by skilled contractors, to residential property homeowners throughout the Superfund web site boundaries. For residents whose residential consuming water wells are recognized as having excessive ranges of steel contamination, EPA might present an alternate water provide. This response motion is non permanent to forestall additional publicity till a corrective motion to handle the contamination has been recognized and accomplished. Dedication to steady cleansing EPA is dedicated to residential yard cleanup work as it's important to selling the discount of kids's publicity to steer. As understanding of lead's affect on human well being has elevated, the Facilities for Illness Management and Prevention (CDC) now acknowledges that there's there isn't any protected stage of lead within the blood In kids. Information present as of September 2022. (US EPA chart) A 2019 EPA Research 20 years of childhood blood lead ranges (BLLs) in six states indicated that Superfund cleanups decreased the danger of elevated BLL ranges for kids dwelling inside 1.24 miles of websites contaminated with lead between 8 and 18%. Youngsters beneath the age of seven must be examined for lead poisoning yearly, since lead-poisoned kids don't at all times look or act sick. EPA encourages dad and mom and caregivers to work with their household's pediatricians and native county well being departments to display screen for this toxicity via blood lead stage testing. Work will proceed at these Superfund websites to pattern and remediate parks, gardens, and kids's play areas to make sure frequent use areas are protected for communities to take pleasure in with out the danger of lead publicity. EPA's actions additionally lengthen to sampling, evaluating, and cleansing up the remaining sources of contamination in communities: mine tailings piles, deserted railroad tracks, contaminated soils, floodplain soils, and sediments from streams, rivers, and lakes that characterize a threat to human well being and the setting. ambient. EPA Area 7 has made nice strides to take away lead from southeastern Missouri and continues to assist clear up and restore landscaping, whereas partaking communities in well being training and protected practices to scale back lead publicity. lead. Owen County: One More Covered Bridge and the Cataract Falls -- or -- “And now for something completely different.”
While Parke County claims to have the largest collection of covered bridges still extant in the country – a whopping 31 – looking across the pages of my map book reveals bridges in adjacent counties, including one sited near a natural feature known as the Cataract Falls.
Tumblr media
Friday turned out to be a wonderful day to take a run south to see the bridge and the falls, now both within the Cataract Falls State Recreation Area.  After seeing the covered bridge, I took a walk to see what the Cataract Falls looked like.
Tumblr media
Old mill pond, looking toward the the Upper Falls from the Cataract Falls Bridge.
I’ve seen some waterfalls, even been to see Niagara Falls, but I’m usually game to see more.  After walking the bridge, I rambled afoot to take in Mill Creek and the Cataract Falls.
Tumblr media
The Upper Falls from the site of the old mill.
Described as extending over a series of drops, both Upper and Lower Falls descend over fractured stone, tumbling down natural stair-steps.
Tumblr media
Lower Falls: I suppose you could call this the main drop, the last and highest of the steps down.
It’s about a mile from one falls to the other, and the foot trail winds along a few yards west of the creek.  Here and there visitors have beat their own side paths to gain access to the creekside.

Mill Creek, below the Upper Falls: the view south(ish) toward the falls.
As with many recreation areas and nature preserves, the woodsy land on either side of the trail is pretty dense; a few older growth trees remain, with many of middling-age, surrounded at the ground with under-story growth of myriad types.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thick under growth, with wildflowers.
Tumblr media
Ohio Spiderwort (I think), growing in the margin between trail and creek.
Though of a much smaller scale, the scene recalled that of the Falls of the Genesee in the Fingerlakes region of New York: the faulted rock, the water-carved pools surrounded by walls of stone, the sound of tumbling water cascading over the edges.

more of unzen: samurai town
Mid-June was the beginning of the rainy season here in Omura. During rainy season, the rain can last for several weeks to a month, causing risk of mold and leaving newly washed clothes frustratingly wet. After it ends comes the intense summer heat and humidity, which will last well into September or October. I tried to be grateful for the rain before the real unpleasantness of summer began. I’m also grateful that I have a car now and didn’t really have to walk or bike to work in the rain.
Anyway, in mid-June, we made another small trip to Unzen to visit the hometown of a friend. Her family owns a shop where they mill and sell rice, and are opening a new space which they would like to turn into a cafe/yoga studio. The space they’re using is interestingly located in what was once a samurai village.
According to my friend, the castle which the houses surrounded is now destroyed, and has been since the end of Sengoku Jidai, the Warring States Period in fuedal Japan, a period in which many fuedal lords competed for power. The houses around the castle were all inhabited by samurai warriors and their families, and even after the destruction of the castle and the abolition of the warrior class in the Meiji era, the houses were passed down through the ancestors of the samurai that once lived there.
It’s a very small town with a mostly elderly population, but I saw a few kids running around too. The streets were lined with moat-like drainage ditches with small bridges extending into the entrance of the estates which kind of resembled draw-bridges. The estates were surrounded by high walls and large gates with fancy wooden doors, so it definitely gave an air of importance.
Tumblr media
One of the samurai estates has been preserved from its original days of use and now serves as a small museum that you can enter to see how the samurai lived. It was only about 300 yen ($3) to enter.
The attendant of the house showed us an aerial view of the estate, which consisted of several buildings and a few large outdoor areas, maybe used as meeting spaces or training grounds, as well as a lovely garden. Before we entered the building, I admired the exterior. I’ve always found old Japanese architecture so pretty with the sloping roofs, wooden exteriors, and sliding doors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We entered the building through the genkan, or entryway. Even modern homes have this, and you traditionally remove your shoes here before entering the home. This traditional one was much bigger and included a hearth as well.
Tumblr media
Being traditional Japanese style, the floor plan consisted of several rooms connected by sliding doors with a walkway along the outside. Something really beautiful about the house was that it was raised on posts and had a pond in the center and underneath. There were even koi in the pond. It was super cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We continued on down the hallway to find the kitchen. Traditionally bathrooms and kitchens are kept almost separate from the rest of the home, in concrete areas resembling a genkan. I think maybe this is to protect the wooden house from fire or water damage. The kitchen area was in a concrete lowered space with traditional stove in which a fire is lit underneath. There were also many storage pots for various foods and seasonings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the center of the house was one large and ornately decorated room. It had a traditional tokonoma, which is an alcove in the wall in which a hanging scroll and other decorative objects like vases are placed. The top of the wall above the sliding doors in the middle had ornately carved wooden designs, which I’ve seen in traditional homes before as well. On the opposite side was a display case which held Western style armor. The warrior of this house actually spent time overseas (a common theme for Nagasaki) and had thus brought some Western influence back with him to his home. You can also see this in the Western style paintings on the wall of him and his wife.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were separated sleeping quarters for both men and women. In the women’s section you can find a palaquin on display, which was used to carry noble women around. It was actually very small and even my small Japanese friend stood next to it and we agreed she could probably not fit comfortably. I wonder if women were smaller back then, or if they just crammed in as best they could?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we found the room for bathing, which similar to the kitchen was in a lowered concrete space away from the rest of the house. Older Japanese baths were more barrel-like, not very long but very deep.
Tumblr media
From here we stepped out of the house again to explore the outside grounds. On rainy days in Nagasaki prefecture, you can sometimes find crabs skittering around outside, so we saw many crabs as we made our way around the building.
Tumblr media
Up a stone stair behind the estate is a large flat area. It was mostly an empty space, but at one end there were some large palms that had been carefully tended.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We came back down the stairs and around the side of the building to find a large ornate entrance, which was maybe used long ago when there were visitors. We enjoyed the scenery of the small garden for a bit and then headed out. We saw some cool cacti growing near the entrance on our way out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After we left, we stopped by a local honey place. They raise bees around the back and inside the store they sell honey, honey combs, honey flavored teas and coffees, and ice cream. I got the honey comb ice cream, which was vanilla soft serve, a bit of honey comb, some crunchy flakes similar to corn flakes at the bottom, and drizzled on top with honey. It was super tasty, though a bit expensive (around $9). It was my first time trying honey comb and it was soooo good.
Tumblr media
We went around back to see the bee houses and chatted with a worker for a bit. It was really cool to be able to watch the bees work and build the honey combs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I’m sure you all know by now, I love Unzen and have been travelling here quite a lot recently. It’s such a quiet and scenic area, with so many small local places to enjoy. I can’t wait to come back and see more! :)
