💖 What do you like most about your own writing?
I'm mostly able to just let loose and write things for fun, especially these days, and I'm less neurotic about comments and feedback. When I'm focused, I can even finish things... imagine! I like to think I'm good at setting a scene and picking out small details that heighten an emotion or experience. As far as fanfiction goes, I enjoy writing things that haven't been written before and that fill a pretty specific niche in terms of missing scenes or characters that didn't interact much in canon. Plus I'm all about that LGBTQ+ rep.
🌝 Who is one character you haven’t yet written for that you would like to?
Too many in too many fandoms! I'm very much into Star Trek TNG right now and I'd love to write Deanna Troi, she's great.
In Code Lyoko, it would be fun to write something about Milly and Tamiya that's longer than a drabble. No idea what that would be though...
🖊 Post a snippet from a current WIP.
((This is very new and feels very exciting, if I manage to get it off the ground!)) Under a cut for neatness' sake.
More and more, I appreciate Franz Hopper. The entire world’s technology as it is now and no one has come close to creating what he did in 1994. The world might be a very different place today if the government had let him free, or indeed, if he had survived what happened on Lyoko… I often look back on the day we shut down the supercomputer and lament the technology we left behind. This is Hopper’s life’s work and leaving it to rot in a dusty old factory never really sat well with me.
Call it boyhood nostalgia, I suppose. An existential crisis. Whatever.
But Lyoko is calling me back.
To anyone reviewing these logs in the future: I would hope that you’re viewing these diary entries in chronological order, so of course you know what I’m talking about. If not, go back to the first entry in this folder, October 9th, 2003. It’s a large backlog, but it’s worth it.
Anyway, down to business. I hypothesise that without XANA’s influence, Lyoko has been able to grow and develop organically as Franz Hopper intended. From here on the interface I can see some interesting developments: changes to terrain, expansion of land mass, dozens of new sub-programs. It makes the world we explored as teenagers seem almost simple in comparison. The only way to fully document this new world however is to be virtualised for a close-up look. From within Lyoko, I can observe and interact with things properly and take my time with the voyage.

Okay, here me out: Tangled Code Lyoko AU
I’ve been rewatching Code Lyoko on Netflix and I watched an episode tonight with Aelita’s memories about first arriving on Lyoko with her father and Franz Hopper was all “Stay in the tower! It’s not safe, Aelita!” And I kind of laughed and said “Man, Aelita and Raps would get along great.”
Then it hit me.
Obviously, Rapunzel in the role of Aelita. She’s been trapped in a virtual world for years, created by her father. The computer has been off for years. Then three dum-dums from the local boarding school happen to come across the old abandoned factory her computer is housed in.
Those dum-dums? Super-genius computer nerd Varian; class-clown Lance; and none other than Eugene Fitzherbert. (Eugene and Lance are roommates and in high school and they kind of adopted the middle-school-aged-but-same-grade-as-them nerd down the hall). So Varian just wants parts to make the rival school suffer at the next robotics tournament, alright? And so he sneaks out at night to go to the factory for parts; Lance and Eugene catch him in the act and 1: are so proud of him for taking the rule-breaking initiative and 2: are obviously going with. Cassandra happens to catch them sneaking out, and follows them as well.
At the factory, they find the supercomputer, and turn it on--which is when Cassandra scares the crap out of them by revealing she followed them. They also find the room with the scanners. There’s a bit of daring involved and various teenager shenanigans and basically Eugene gets into one of the scanners to prove he’s not a chicken.
And, well, Varian finds the right sequence of keystrokes required to activate said scanners at that very moment.
Eugene ends up in Lyoko. He’s wearing armor and has a sword. Think “Moonstone Eugene” look. He finds his way to a tower. Meets a beautiful virtual girl about his age with long blonde hair who attacks him for getting too close to her tower. She doesn’t know how long she’s been in the tower, or how long the computer has been off; as far as she can remember, she’s always lived there. And that it’s forbidden to leave her tower, because it’s dangerous, but she doesn’t know why she knows that or who told her that. However, her desire to explore her world is great; Eugene just wants to get home, and she agrees to help him so long as he takes her with him to another tower, where Varian should be able to bring him back, taking her as well to his world. Eugene agrees. What’s the harm? After all, it seemed pretty peaceful out there.
Eugene was very very wrong.
Monsters around every corner, and he’s losing these things called ‘life points’ with every hit and Varian is pretty sure that Eugene will die if he loses all of the life points.
And, oh yeah, the crazy digital chick has hair that glows when she sings and makes monsters explode if they get hit by the light. Because why not?
Eventually, Lance and Cassandra join in Lyoko when things are getting rough. At some point, a tower gets activated and Rapunzel is the only one who can deactivate it. Varian learns of the evil computer program G.O.T.H.E.L that is behind the tower activation and an attack on the outside world, and Rapunzel comments that it’s all familiar. That’s why she had been in the tower.
Rapunzel is the only one who can deactivate the tower, and Eugene takes a critical hit from a monster meant for her--taking the last of his life points. As he starts to fade away, pixel by pixel, Rapunzel begins to sing. Eugene glows and is restored.
Rapunzel goes to deactivate the tower and finds the code that Varian needs to bring his friends back to the real world. Everyone is devirtualized... except for Rapunzel. For some reason, it doesn’t work on her. Varian vows to help her join the real world, and Eugene, Lance, and Cassandra promise to be there when G.O.T.H.E.L strikes. Meanwhile, Rapunzel and Eugene get closer and develop crushes on each other, prompting Eugene to help Varian whenever he can in finding the right code to bring Rapunzel to their world.
Oh, and the Baron is the Principal and Stallion takes on the role of Sissi. And Red and Angry take on the roles of Milly and Tamiya.

Code Lyoko Hopeater edition: Milly and Tamiya
Tumblr media
Milly and Tamiya are part of the school’s journal, always trying to find the latest scoop. Milly is more insecure and emotional while Tamiya is more comfortable in her own skin, albeit much calmer too. They are both equal parts allies and enemies. Allies in that they’re always ready to relay and spread information, and enemies in that the Lyoko Warriors aren’t exempt from their snooping around.

You know, I finally realized why the characterization in Evolution is so weak, thanks to a friend of mine.
It's not just because the actors, bless their hearts, just weren't that good, or just because the dialogue was abysmal. It's not even just because they had their entire character development stripped from them. It's also all of these things, of course, but not only that.
In Code Lyoko, everyone was unique in their own ways. Without Jeremie, there would be no series. He was the one who discovered the supercomputer. He was the one who reawakened Aelita and XANA. He was the one who worked endlessy to bring Aelita on Earth, and he was necessary to the gang since out of everyone, bar maybe Aelita herself, he knew how the supercomputer worked the best. His raw intelligence, his flaws, his virtues made Code Lyoko into what it was.
Aelita herself wasn't a "female Jeremie", she was her own character who, yes, was super smart, but also had her own series of flaws and virtues that made her a better fit for the role of "action girl". And her being the only one who could deactivate towers also gave the series higher stakes- it's safe to assume that scanners have a cooldown and once you've been devirtualized you can't go back immediately, and at first, devirtualization meant death for her. If Aelita fell, thing that was a very real danger since she was XANA's main target for the entire series, and since she didn't have direct attack powers for two seasons, everyone fell.
Yumi provided a more balanced, "older sister" type of figure, both in Lyoko and on Earth. More agile than Ulrich, less so than Odd, stronger than Odd, weaker than Ulrich, she was also the one who tried to keep her younger friends from doing things excessively stupid, even if she still got her own moments of idiocy (she was still a teen, after all). Not only that, her status as a student who didn't live in Kadik provided her new obstacles to get past, and in fact we see her struggle to hide her "hero" persona from her parents.
Ulrich had clear self esteem issues. A melee fighter with one of the most op skillsets in the series, he doesn't shine nearly as much as he could, because he's trapped in his own doubts and family issues, thing that is also reflected in his relationship with Yumi. He's still, however, a sweet guy, who can be irrational at times but loves his friends dearly and always has everyone's best interest in mind- his relationship with William? Perfect example. He's jealous of William. He doesn't like him that much. He still, however, admires him and is grateful when the boy puts his life on the line to save them from a bomb, and admits that he would make for a fine Lyoko Warrior.
Odd was a joker, a wannabe casanova, and may appear stupid to others, but he wasactually fiercely protective of his friends and everyone in Kadik (case in point, him risking his life to save Millie and Tamiya, getting himself trapped into a crumbling building in the process), and his quick thinking and agility made him one of the best warriors in Lyoko despite his lack of super abilities like Yumi's Telekinesis or Ulrich's Triplication, to the point where he was one of the few who managed to defeat William in a 1v1. Odd's presence provided a more light hearted outlook to the gang- to the point that when he was the one getting hurt, seriously so, the series tended to reach its points of maximum darkness.
William, Sissi, Jim, Millie, Tamiya, Sam, hell, even XANA himself all were unique characters who had their own driving forces, flaws and virtues that helped them appearing to the audience as real people (or, well, entities in XANA's case). Evolution just kinda threw that out of the window. In Evolution, no one is special. No one is memorable except for Laura, and she is for all the wrong reasons. No one is necessary, because all Lyoko warriors can do the same things now, there is no real difference in ability (Ulrich only remembers he has abilities every now and then, same for Yumi who I don't think I have ever seen use telekinesis, the only ones who regularly use them are Aelita and William, and even then, Aelita only uses Flight and William refuses to use his Supersmoke properly). Code Lyoko presented us people who were special not because they could do cool stuff, but because they had their own ways to do that cool stuff. Now 99% of the group can deactivate a tower, and even Jeremie has been reduced to “one of the people who can operate the supercomputer”.
And, if we look at everyone’s personalities and interpersonal dynamics, again, they’re all interchangeable now. Yumi and Aelita are “the girls”. William and Ulrich are “the cool guys”. Even the jealousy dynamic (brought back and made even worse by awful writers who don’t know that character development and inconsistency aren’t the same thing) between Ulrich/Yumi/William has been doubled with the new addiction of Laura as a red herring love interest for Jeremie. They aren’t people anymore... they’re plot devices. To the point where the only character who actually feels alive from time to time is XANA, who got a few admittedly amusing scenes such as him flirting (???) with William and Yumi and getting into an argument with Odd and William via polymorphic clones, though I am 99% sure that the humour in those scenes wasn’t intended.

So here's a Code Lyoko AU. It's read like a game and based on that fighter idea I wrote out. But I turned it into a story. So here's the plot. I really don't know what to title this AU.
The plot is a bit dark and characters are a little different personality wise. It's mixed cyberpunk and fantasy with urban areas some areas more so than others as apposed to cities. Through the plot the characters the characters fight the monsters along the way to reach their goal that includes other characters. They all have their reasons for fighting each other like in Mortal Kombat and Soul Calibur. "Like get out of my way or i'll have to fight you". Sissi goes by Elizabeth. There are various beast races like Odd. He's half human and tiger (or panther I don't know which to pick). Franz and Aelita are tragic characters and their backstory is a convoluted mess. Aelita is confused in her role and what she's doing might be right or wrong. (She might sacrifice herself in the end I don't really know for sure). I'm thinking that she should be neutral but she does betray her friends and others from time to time because she is confused and her father isn't exactly the best. Lyoko doesn't exist so the only cyberspace is the use of computers and hacking. Everyone isn't exactly nice. The men in black are racist pricks and some of them are literally crazy and will murder whoever the fuck they want. They aren't called men in black but they are still mysterious. Jeremie is a cybermage with a mechanical right arm. His magic isn't exactly top par. Xana is in the story and is the final boss. (Again read like a game). But once he is killed his influence is still out there in the world and doesn't exactly fade away fast. His lackeys are still out there. He's done some horrible stuff to people. There's some hidden lore so you learn that Xana used Franz and is partcially the reason why the world is bad and is a tiny bit at war. Though there are other wars going on.
Aelita is a test tube baby and is half elf and half human with a small amount of angelic blood in her. Franz really does love her, but he doesn't really know what to do. He's a crazy ass scientist
The core 6 don't always work together as they do tend to split up
William is a lone wolf and prefers it that way. Later on he gets possessed and is almost killed in the process of being freed.
Ulrich and Yumi are in clans. Their clans have mutual respect for each other, but have fought in the past, so love between these clans are looked down upon
Odd, Milly and Tamiya have brother sister relationship so they are close. Xana takes full advantage of this and kills Milly later on
Odd is sorta a lone wolf but unlike William he prefers a group to work with but if he has to do it alone he'll do it alone. He's reluctant on working with other people in groups because of racism. Some people are racist to the beast races even if they are half human and half elf or whatever.
Xana is a person and not an AI, but he is powerful
There's the basic plot. I'll add more later on

favourite Code Lyoko character? :D
Main character? Probably Aelita. I know it’s super cliché, but she’s just so Pure and Good, and she has such a tragic backstory but never gives up on humanity (and she puts up with Jeremie’s shit the most so that also counts for something).
In terms of secondary characters, I’d say either Sissi or William. Mainly because neither of them were given a fair chance: Sissi’s goodwill toward people was always erased due to all the returns to the past and she never really learned anything, plus they always treat her like dirt and it’s really sad, especially since all she wanted to do was join the group in the first place (plus she doesn’t even KNOW why they treat her so badly — it really kills me because they’re holding the grudge against her from when she ratted them out to her dad and Jim and she has no freaking idea because Jeremie did a return trip!!!). And then there’s William, who was treated like shit by the writers because they wanted to spice up Ulrich and Yumi’s nonexistent romance by inventing a love triangle and more unnecessary tension, and then they threw him under the bus EVEN MORE by having him under XANA’s control for an entire season! Honestly both William and Sissi Deserved Better and I will fight for them forever because they were given literally like no character development.
Now for more minor characters, Milly and Tamiya (and Hiroki). I’d like to imagine they’d all be besties (plus Johnny I guess), even though Milly and Tamiya are a year older than the boys. Plus I’m pretty sure it’s canon that Hiroki has a crush on Milly, which mirrors Ulrich and his feelings for Yumi and that’s freaking adorable.

can’t sleep so have a fic extract (in which Odd and Jeremie share a secret and Ulrich is out of the loop)
Odd swung his legs over the bench, dropping his bag of books carelessly onto the tarmac where it landed lightly (as it didn't have very many books in it). A few loose pencils rolled out. Odd barely noticed.
Ulrich gave him a long, suspicious look. "What's got you so happy all of a sudden?"
Odd's grin stretched even wider. "What do you mean? I'm always happy."
"Sure, but today you look like Christmas came early, a new video game was released, you beat your personal best on Lyoko and got a new girlfriend all at once."
Odd laughed. "Actually, even better." In a song-song voice, he added, "I've got a secret!"
Ulrich spun fully to face him then, practically launching himself in front of the bench so they were nose to nose. "What, a secret? And you're not telling us, what's the big deal huh? Odd, I-"
But Odd had ducked, slid back down from the bench and scooped up his bookbag in one fell swoop and ran away, laughing. "Gotta go, see you good buddy - maybe you'll find out if you're smart enough!"
Ulrich sighed and dropped his chin to his folded hands.
"Whatever."
---
They were hanging out in Jeremie's room, where Odd tended to make himself at home. Odd was used to the back of Jeremie's head as he stared at his computer; it was a comforting, familiar sight. Odd sat on the bed, entertaining himself by throwing candy into the air and catching it in his mouth, and they both took turns in choosing what CDs to put on Jeremie's CD player.
"Ugh," Jeremie said at last, and pushed himself away from his keyboard. His chair spun out to the side as he stretched, a series of soft sounds cracking along his shoulders and neck. Odd grimaced.
"We need to book you in with a massage therapist, Einstein."
Jeremie pulled a face. "I'll pass, thanks Odd. I hear there are some excellent healing properties to strawberry-flavoured sweets, though." He eyed the pack hopefully, and Odd handed it over.
"So," Jeremie continued, between mouthfuls of sweets. "May I ask what this huge secret is that you've been refusing to tell us about?"
"You know, that kind of goes against the definition of 'secret', Jeremie. Someone with your big old brain ought to know that."
"Aw, come on." He swallowed a mouthful of candy and grinned. "There's no fun in having a secret if it's just you on your own. If you tell me, I promise I won't tell Ulrich. Well, unless it's something really bad and he actually needs to know... It's not bad, is it?"
"It's not. In fact, it's great. Super great. And a lot of fun, too."
Jeremie drummed his feet against the wheels of his chair. "Please! Think of all the times I've helped you with your homework!"
Odd sighed, a long and drawn out sound as he stared thoughtfully as his friend, as though he was giving the request the utmost deliberation. "Okay," he said at last. "But you really have to not tell. It could really hurt the cause if you did. Besides, Milly and Tamiya would kill me."
Jeremie was leaning forward in his chair now, hands balanced on Odd's knees. "That's interesting, Milly and Tamiya huh? Well go on, I'm waiting."
Odd took a deep breath, then released his words all in one rush - "I'm the new secret advice columnist for the Kadic Herald!"
There was a pause, and then Jeremie burst out laughing.
Odd crossed his arms, clearly offended. “Come on, it’s great news!”
It was another minute before Jeremie could reply, busy as he was wiping down his fogged-up glasses and catching his breath. “I’m sorry, Odd. It is, it is. It’s just that Ulrich’s been driving himself crazy over it, and it’s definitely not going to be what he was expecting.” He exhaled, long and slow, and shuffled to sit more comfortably on the bed beside Odd. “So how did this happen?”
Odd shrugged. “I thought it might be a fun thing to do. What with XANA being quiet lately and all.”
“XANA being quiet is an excuse to catch up on studies and have some downtime! Well, for you guys anyway. I’m still running tests and refining Clone William’s code and puzzling out new methods for rescuing William from the supercomputer. You know, the useful stuff.”
“Yeah, yeah. I’m just here to spice things up a little.”
Jeremie was surprisingly into the whole thing, given how little he usually cared for Kadic shenanigans. Odd supposed he had agreed to Milly and Tamiya’s interview that time; maybe he was just really into supporting small press and local journalism.
By the time he had convinced Jeremie to switch off his computer and take a long break, they still had a few hours left of the afternoon. When Ulrich came to find them later on, they were surrounded by empty soft drink cans and snack papers and laughing uproariously about a video game that Jeremie was losing terribly at, yet insisting on multiple ‘last attempts’ so he could try and score a win.
Of course, Jeremie kept Odd’s secret. The real surprise was that Odd himself managed to keep his secret from everyone else. It probably helped that his friends weren’t especially invested in the Kadic Herald unless something really interesting was going on.
Little did they all know, Odd’s new venture was about to spark some very interesting things indeed.
