Todoroki Enji's father's death and why he feels he's not a superhuman: observations, ramblings and speculations

So, since recently I've gotten asks about it, I ended up thinking more and more about the whole flashback regarding Enji's father's death and why he connects it to his weakness and to how he feels he'll never be a superhero while Deku or All Might are.

So, as usual what follows is a theory. I don't assume to be Horikoshi and therefore know the truth. I'm just theorizing.

Now, let's start with rewatching the full scene from chap 356 for who doesn't remember it well.

'Sara ni yowaku natta’ 「更に弱くなった」 “You became beyond weak.”

'Tachiba to tsugunai to ayamachi to sekinin ga’ 「立場と償いと過ちと責任が」 “Position, atonement, mistakes and responsibility.”

'Omae no seirai no yowasa wo abaki dashi miru ni taenai guzu e to hikizuri oroshita’ 「おまえの生来の弱さを曝き出し見るに堪えない愚図へと引きずり下ろした」 “Your innate weaknesses was exposed and I can’t bear to see how you were dragged down into an indecisive person.”

'Chōjin ni wa narenainda yo Enji (omae) wa’ 「超人にはなれないんだよ炎司（おまえ）は」 “Enji (read: you) can’t become a superhuman.”

'Genten wo omoi dase’ 「原点を思い出せ」 “Remember your origin.”

'Teki ga nan datta no ka wo’ 「敵が何だったのかを」 “What was the enemy?”

'Akkan kara shoujo wo sukuou to shi kekka shoujo moro tomo nikukai to ka shita chichi wo’ 「悪漢から少女を救おうとし結果少女もろとも肉塊と化した父を」 “Your father tries to save a girl from a scroundel and, as a result, he and the girl were turned into a lump of meat.”

’Shin no choujin he no senbou to higami wo’ 「真の超人への羨望と僻みを」 “Your envy and inferiority complex toward a true superhuman…”

'“Doryoku (‘Endeavor’)” to nanoru hikutsu na shoune wo’ 「“努力” （エンデヴァー）と名乗る卑屈な性根を」 “You called yourself ‘effort’ (read 'Endeavor’) due to your menial nature.”

'Kojishite inakereba tamotenu teido no minikui kokoro wo’ 「誇示していなければ保てぬ程度の醜い心を」 “Unless you’re putting on airs you can’t sustain your ugly heart”

'Sou. Omae wa All Might ni mo Deku ni mo narenai' そうおまえはオールマイトにもデクにもなれない “Yes. You can't become All Might or Deku”

'Enji (read: Ore) wa itsumo jibun no yowasa to shika tatakattenakatta kara' 炎司(おれ)はいつも自分の弱さとしか戦ってなかったから “Because Enji (read: I) was always fighting only against his (my) own weaknesses.”

'Dakara umare kawarou nante kangaeruna' だから生まれ変わろうなんて考えるな “So don’t think about being reborn.”

'“Onore no yowasa (teki)” wo noroi tsudzukero' “己の弱さ (てき)"を呪い続けろ “Keep cursing 'your own weakness (read: the enemy)'.”

'Yuiitsu sore dake ga omae wo ikashite kita dakara' 唯一それだけがおまえを生かしてきただから “That is the only thing that kept you alive.”

As I've said more than once recently, on the surface there seems to be too few info on Enji's father's death to judge things beyond that the visual seems to suggests Enji seems in shock and in pain at witnessing his father's death.

But in hindsight the fact that there's so little might be because Horikoshi actually placed a relevant information through which lenses we should read the scene earlier in the manga and it's a relevant information as it's one of the core themes of the story.

Let's go back to chap 1 and to Midoriya's question.

Which was All Might's first reply?

Without power (力 'Chikara') one can't become a Hero and Enji's life is a quest for power, for strength. He thinks in order to surpass All Might one needs more power, more strength.

However we know how chap 1 actually ends...

Enji's origin (that's how his teenager self called it) isn't one of him acting to save people. It's of him watching the scene.

The narrative implication of depicting him there might be that he was always present and didn't jump to action, he froze, he watched.

His father moved to save people, failed and died.

Enji could have gone to help him and this might have done the difference. He'll never know because he didn't do it.

He froze same as he froze when Natsuo was attacked.

Same as he froze when Touya attacked Shouto and tried to kill himself and his brother...

...and, in a way, same as he failed to save Touya because he didn't go to Sekoto Peak.

The message Horikoshi tried to deliver home with that scene and that speech might be tied to all this.

Enji didn't have that self sacrificing instinct that instead pushed Midoriya to move. For most of his life he tried to protect his own heart by blaming others and dodging responsibilities and pushing on his children the burden of erasing him of the ugliness in his heart.

He fights it to be a Hero, and chases power because that's an 'easy way' to win. If you're stronger you don't have to risk your life, you can easily overcome fear of death by never being in danger either.

Yes, yes, I know Enji risks life in his fight with Shigaraki and with All for One. The point might be though is he's putting his life in danger by fighting himself, his own weakness, by raging against it and finding strength to overcome his own fear through rage.

And that's why his decision to die with Touya might be twice as important for his arc (I've already talked about his arc here and here but just in terms of his atonement... not of him trying to become a Hero to be proud of... or a father). As said in another post Enji never planned for his demise prior to that moment, he assumed he would keep on living watching over Touya.

He's not raging here to overcome his fear of death. He's doing it just because he doesn't want to let his son die alone and because he wants to still protect the people.

He's being a father and a Hero.

But... I can hear you thinking 'he's not saving Touya'.

Yeah, because he's fighting down with an image of a Hero who's self sacrificing... but BNHA subverts the trope of the self sacrificing Hero.

While death might be sometimes inevitable an ultimate Hero in the story is a Hero who save by winning and win by saving.

The story has criticized the idea of self sacrificing more than once from the start, with Aizawa and Recovery Girl telling Midoriya it wasn't okay for him to break his bones to win, that he couldn't become a Hero this way, Recovery Girl also scolding All Might and telling him he shouldn't encourage him to act this way to culminate with the end of the Dark Hero arc in which such mindset is openly criticized.

Enji overcame his belief he couldn't sacrifice his life if he wasn't raging against himself. He was ready to die... but then Shouto stepped him and showed him that an ultimate Hero isn't just one who's willing to die to save people but one that by saving people wins.

Shouto (with the help of his family) freezes Touya, and by saving Touya and stopping him from exploding, he saved all the other people who would be involved in the explosion.

The whole ultimate Hero thing is likely going to reach its apex with Midoriya not only managing to physically save Shigaraki like Shouto did with Touya or emotionally saving him like Uraraka did with Himiko but saving him both physically and emotionally and this leading to the rest of the world to be saved, accomplishing what will be likely the ultimate saving... possibly doing so with the help of others and of society so as to remark that a world based on a single pillar is not really functional, everyone has to contribute to keep peace.

At least, that's what I'm currently speculating. Of course I can be completely off track because I'm not Horikoshi and I don't get to know what he's planning.

あまね「二十代半ばから後半あたりの男性に見えます。ただし瞳は紅梅色、そして瞳孔が猫のように縦長です」

Amane “Nijudai-nakaba kara kohan atari-no danseini miemasu. Tadashi hitomi wa kobai-syoku, soshite doko ga neko no yoni tatenaga desu.”

Amane “He appears to be a young man in his early-to-late twenties. However…his eyes are a light pink color… and his pupils are vertical slits like a cat’s.”

耀哉「そうか…そう…君は…来ると…思っていた…必ず…。君は私に…産屋敷一族に酷く腹を立てていただろうから…私だけは…　君が…君自身が殺しに来ると…思っていた…」

Kagaya “Soka… So… Kimi wa kuru to omotteita… kanarazu… Kimi wa watashini… Ubuyashiki ichizoku ni hidoku hara o tateteita-darokara… watashi dake wa… kimiga…kimi-jishinga koroshini kuru to… omotteita…”

Kagaya “Is that right? Right. I knew that…you’d be coming. Without fail. Because I’m sure that… you’ve been quite livid with me…with the Ubuyashiki Family. I always expected you…to come personally for me alone…to kill me yourself.”

無惨「私は心底興醒めしたよ、産屋敷。身の程も弁えず、千年にも渡り、私の邪魔ばかりしてきた一族の長が、このようなザマで。醜い。何とも醜い。お前からは既に屍の匂いがするぞ、産屋敷よ」

Muzan “Watashi wa shinsoko kyozame shitayo, Ubuyashiki. Minohodo mo wakimaezu, sen-nen-nimo watari, watashino jama bakari shitekita ichizoku no osa ga, konoyona zamade. Minikui. Nantomo minikui. Omae-kara wa sudeni shikabane no nioi ga suruzo, Ubuyashiki yo.”

Muzan “I’m feeling utterly disenchanted, Ubuyashiki. To see the head of the clan that for a thousand years… had the gall to constantly thwart me… in such a deplorable state. Hideous. So very hideous. Your body is already giving off the scent of a corpse, Ubuyashiki.”

耀哉「そうだろうね…。私は…半年も前には…医者から…数日で死ぬと言われていた…。それでもまだ…私は生きている…。医者も…言葉を…失っていた…。それもひとえに…君を倒したいという一心ゆえだ…無惨…」

Kagaya “So daro-ne… Watashi wa… han-toshi-mo mae niwa… isha kara su-jitsu de shinuto iwarete-ita… Soredemo mada…watashi wa ikiteiru… Isya mo…kotoba o…ushinatte-ita… Soremo hitoeni…kimi o taoshitaito iu isshin yue da… Muzan…”

Kagaya “I’m sure that it does. Six months ago… I was…told by my doctor that I would be dead in a few days. And yet, here I am…still alive. Even my doctor…was left…speechless. And it’s all thanks to…my single-minded desire to defeat you… Muzan.”

無惨「その儚い夢も今宵潰えたな。お前はこれから私が殺す」

Muzan “Sono hakanai yume mo koyoi tsuieta na. Omae wa korekara watashi ga korosu.”

Muzan “That feeling dream of yours is about to be shattered tonight. I’m going to kill you now.”

耀哉「君は…知らないかもしれないが…君と私は…同じ血筋なんだよ…君が生まれたのは…千年以上前のことだろうから…私と君の血は、もう…近くないけれど…」

Kagaya “Kimi wa…shiranai kamo shirenai ga… kimito watashi wa… onaji chisuji nandayo… Kimi ga umaretanowa…sen-nen-ijo-maeno koto darokara…watashi to kimino chi wa, mo…chikakunai keredo…”

Kagaya “You…may not know this… but you and I…hail from the same bloodline. Although since you were likely born more than a thousand years ago… our blood is no longer thick.”

無惨「何の感情も湧かないな。お前は何が言いたいのだ？」

Muzan “Nanno kanjo mo wakanaina. omae wa naniga iitainoda?”

Muzan “That does nothing for me emotionally. What is it that you’re trying to say?”

耀哉「君のような怪物を…一族から出してしまったせいで…私の一族は…呪われていた…」

Kagaya “Kimino-yona kaibutsu o…ichizoku kara dashite-shimatta seide… watashino ichizoku wa… norowarete ita…”

Kagaya My clan has been cursed… because the family… produced a monster…like you.

耀哉「生まれてくる子供たちは皆、病弱ですぐに死んでしまう…。一族がいよいよ絶えかけた時、神主から助言を受けた…『同じ血筋から鬼が出ている…その者を倒す為に心血を注ぎなさい…そうすれば一族は絶えない…』代々神職の一族から妻をもらい…子供も死にづらくなったが…それでも我が一族の誰も…三十年と生きられない…」

Kagaya “Umarete kuru kodomo-tachi wa mina, byojakude suguni shinde-shimau. Ichizoku ga iyo-iyo taekaketa-toki, kannushi kara jogen o uketa. ‘Onaji chisujikara oniga deteiru… Sonomono o taosu-tameni shinketsu o sosogi-nasai… Sosureba ichizoku wa taenai.’ Daidai shinsyokuno ichizoku kara tsuma o morai… kodomomo shinizuraku-nattaga… soredemo waga ichizokuno daremo… sanju-nen to ikirarenai…”

Kagaya “Our children were all born sickly and weak… and they would die soon after. My family was on the verge of being wiped out… when we received a priest’s advice. ‘A demon has emerged from your bloodline. Commit yourselves… to killing that demon. If you do so, your clan will survive.’ Through the ages, we have married the daughters of priests… and though this has made our children less prone to death, still… no one in our family…has lived past the age of 30.”

無惨「迷言もここに極まれりだな。反吐が出る。お前の病は、頭にまで回るのか？そんな事柄には何の因果関係もなし。なぜなら…私には何の天罰も下っていない。何百何千という人間を殺しても、私は許されている。この千年、神も仏も見たことがない」

Muzan “Meigenmo kokoni kiwamareri dana. Hedoga deru. Omaeno yamai wa, atamanimade mawarunoka? Sonna kotogara niwa nanno ingakankei mo nashi. Nazenara…watashiniwa nanno tembatsu mo kudatte-inai. Nanbyaku-nanzento iu ningen o koroshitemo, watashi wa yurusarete-iru. Kono sen-nen, kamimo hotokemo mitakotoga nai.”

Muzan “Your drivel has now reached its peak. I’m about to gag. Has your disease spread to your brain now? Your story is completely irrelevant. And why? Because I’ve received no divine punishment whatsoever. Even though I’ve killed hundreds… thousands of humans… I have never been held accountable. Over the last thousand years, I’ve never seen the gods or Budda.

耀哉「君は…そのように物を考えるんだね…だが私には私の…考え方がある…。無惨…君の夢は何だい？この千年間…君は一体…どんな夢を見ているのかな…」

Kagaya “Kimi wa… sono-yoni mono o kangaerundane… Daga watashiniwa watashino…kangaekata ga aru… Muzan… Kimi-no yume wa nandai? Kono sen-nen-kan… kimi wa ittai donna yume o mite-irunokana…”

Kagaya “So… that’s how you look at it, is it? But I have… my own… way of thinking. Muzan… What is your dream? What have you been… dreaming about… for the last thousand years?”

無惨（奇妙な感覚だ…。あれ程目障りだった鬼殺隊の元凶を目の前にして、憎しみが湧かない。むしろ…）

Muzan (Kimyona kankaku da… Arehodo mezawari-datta Kisatsutai no genkyo o menomae ni shite, nikushimi ga wakanai. Mushiro…)

Muzan (What an odd feeling. Here he is, right before me, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, always such an eyesore… yet there’s no hatred brimming in me. Actually…)

白髪たち「♪ひとつとや　一夜明くれば　賑やかで　賑やかで　お飾り立てたり　松飾り　松飾り　二つとや　二葉の松は　色ようて　色ようて…　三蓋松は　上総山　上総山…」

Hakuhatsu-tachi “♪Hitotsutoya, ichiya akureba nigiyakade nigiyakade, okazari tatetari matsukazari matsukazari, Futatsutoya, Futaba no matsu wa iro yote iro yote… Sangai-matsu wa Kazusa-yama Kazusa-yama…”

White hair kids “♪One is for one night ending… Lively… Merry… Raise decorations… Pine decorations… Pine decorations… Two is for two pine sprouts… Good color… Good color… Three layers of pine… Mount Kazusa… Mount Kazusa… ”

無惨（この奇妙な懐かしさ、安堵感…、気色が悪い。そして、この屋敷には四人しか人間がいない。産屋敷と妻、子供二人だけ。護衛も何もない…）

Muzan (Kono kimyo na natsukashisa, andokan…, kishoku ga warui. Soshite, kono yashiki niwa yonin-shika ningen ga inai. Ubuyashiki to tsuma, kodomo-futari dake. Goei mo nanimo nai…)

Muzan (This odd sense of familiarity… and relief… It’s revolting. And there are only four humans in this mansion. Ubuyashiki and his wife… and two children. That’s all. No bodyguards whatsoever.)

耀哉「当てようか…無惨。君の心が、私には分かるよ。君は永遠を夢見ている…不滅を…夢見ている…」

Kagaya “Ateyoka… Muzan. Kimino kokoroga, watashi niwa wakaruyo. Kimi wa eien o yumemiteiru… Fumetsu o… yumemiteiru…”

Kagaya “Why don’t I guess, Muzan? I can tell… what’s on your mind, you know. You’re dreaming of eternity. Immortality… is what you dream of.”

無惨「その通りだ。そしてそれは間もなく叶う。禰豆子を手に入れさえすれば」

Muzan “Sono tori da. Soshite sore wa mamonaku kanau. Nezuko o teni iresae-sureba.”

Muzan “Exactly. And that dream will soon come true. As soon as I get my hands on Nezuko.”

耀哉「君の夢は叶わないよ、無惨」

Kagaya “Kimi-no yume wa kanawanai yo, Muzan.”

Kagaya “Your dream’s not coming true… Muzan.”

無惨「禰豆子の隠し場所に随分と自信があるようだな。しかし、お前と違い私にはたっぷりと時間がある」

Muzan “Nezuko no kakushi-basyo ni zuibunto jishinga aru yodana. Shikashi, omae to chigai, watashi-niwa tappurito jikanga aru.”

Muzan “You seem quite confident about where you’ve hidden Nezuko. But unlike you… I have all the time in the world.”

耀哉「君は…思い違いをしている」

Kagaya “Kimi wa… omoi-chigai o shiteiru.”

Kagaya “You… have it all wrong.”

無惨「何だと？」

Muzan “Nandato?”

Muzan “What did you say?”

耀哉「私は、永遠が何か…知っている。永遠という��は…人の想いだ。人の想いこそが永遠であり、不滅なんだよ」

Kagaya “Watashi wa, eien ga nanika… shitteiru. Eien to iu-nowa… hitono omoi da. Hitono omoi-kosoga eiende ari, fumetsu nandayo.”

Kagaya “I… happen to know… what eternity is. Eternity is… the human will. The human will lasts for all eternity… and it’s immortal.”

無惨「下らぬ…お前の話には辟易する」

Muzan “Kudaranu… Omae-no hanashi-niwa hekieki suru.”

Muzan “Such rubbish. Your words make my stomach turn.”

耀哉「この千年間、鬼殺隊はなくならなかった。可哀相な子供たちは大勢死んだが、決してなくならなかった。その事実は、今、君が…下らないと言った、人の想いが不滅であることを証明している」

Kagaya “Kono sen-nen-kan, Kisatsutai wa nakunara-nakatta. Kawaiso na kodomo-tachi wa ozei shindaga, kesshite nakunara-nakatta. Sono jijitsu wa, ima, kimiga kudaranai to itta, hitono omoi ga fumetsu de-arukoto o shomei-shiteiru.”

Kagaya “Over the last thousand years… the Demon Slayer Corps has never been eradicated. So many of my poor children have perished… And yet… it still exists. The fact that it remains… proves that the human will… what you just brushed off as rubbish… is immortal.”

耀哉「大切な人の命を理不尽に奪った者を許さないという想いは…永遠だ。君は誰にも許されていない。この千年間、一度も…。そして君はね、無惨…。何度も何度も、虎の尾を踏み、竜の逆鱗に触れている。本来ならば一生眠っていたはずの虎や竜を、君は起こした。彼らはずっと、君を睨んでいるよ。絶対に逃がすまいと。」

Kagaya “Taisetsuna hitono inochi o rifujin-ni ubatta mono o yurusanai to iu omoi wa… eien da. Kimi wa darenimo yurusarete-inai. Kono sen-nen-kan, ichido mo… Soshite, kimi wane, Muzan… Nandomo nandomo torano o o fumi, ryu no gekirin ni fureteiru. Honrai-naraba issho nemutteita-hazuno tora ya ryu o, kimi wa okoshita. Karera wa zutto, kimi o nirande-iruyo. Zettaini nogasumai to.”

Kagaya “Refusing to forgive those… who have senselessly taken the lives… of their loved ones… That feeling… is eternal. No one… has forgiven you. Not once… in the last thousand years. And you know what, Muzan? Time and time again… you’ve stepped on the tiger’s tail… and incurred the wrath of the dragon… Normally… they would’ve remained asleep for all time… but you’ve awakened… that tiger and dragon. They’ve had their glare… fixed on you all this time… vowing to never let you escape.”

耀哉「私を殺したところで、鬼殺隊は痛くも痒くもない。私自身は、それ程重要じゃないんだ。この…人の想いと繋がりが、君には理解できないだろうね、無惨。なぜなら君は…君たちは、君が死ねば全ての鬼が滅ぶんだろう？」

Kagaya “Watashi o koroshita-tokorode, Kisatsutai wa itakumo kayukumo nai. Watashi-jishin wa, sore-hodo juyo ja-nainda. Kono… hito no omoi to tsunagari ga, kimi niwa rikaidekinai-darone, Muzan. Naze-nara kimi wa… kimi-tachi wa, kimi-ga shineba subete-no oni ga horobundaro?”

Kagaya “Even if you were to kill me… it wouldn’t make any difference at all to the Demon Slayer Corps. I myself… am not that important. These… human feelings and bonds… are not… things that you’d understand… Muzan. And that’s because you… you and your kind… if you die… all demons will be wiped off the face of the earth, right?”

耀哉「空気が揺らいだね…当たりかな？」

Kagaya “Kuki ga yuraida ne… Atari kana?”

Kagaya “I just felt a change in the air. Did I guess right?”

無惨「黙れ」

Muzan “Damare.”

Muzan “Shut up.”

耀哉「うん、もういいよ。ずっと君に言いたかったことは言えた。最期に…一つだけいいかい？私自身はそれ程重要ではないと言ったが…私の死が無意味なわけではない。私は幸運なことに鬼殺隊…特に柱の子たちから慕ってもらっている。つまり私が死ねば、今まで以上に鬼殺隊の士気が上がる…」

Kagaya “Un, mo iiyo. Zutto kimini iitakatta-koto wa ieta. Saigo-ni… hitotsudake iikai? Watashi-jishin wa sorehodo juyo dewa nai to ittaga… watashino shi ga muimi na wakedewa nai. Watashi wa koun-na-kotoni, Kisatsutai… tokuni Hashira no kotachi kara shitatte-moratte-iru. Tsumari watashi ga shineba, imamade ijo ni Kisatsutai no shiki ga agaru…”

Kagaya “Right. That’s enough. I got to say what I’ve always wanted to say to you. Would you mind… if I said one last thing? 炭治郎「ここで、大正コソコソ噂話。甘露寺さんは、煉獄さんの継子だったんだって。稽古が厳しすぎるからみんな逃げてしまうんだけど、甘露寺さんは音を上げなかったそうですよ」

Tanjiro “Kokode, Taisho koso-koso uwasa-banashi. Kanroji-san wa, Rengoku-san no tsuguko dattan-datte. Keiko ga kibishisugiru kara minna nigeteshimaun-dakedo, Kanroji-san wa ne o agenakatta so-desuyo.”

Tanjiro “All right, here’s Taisho-era secret! I hear that Ms. Kanroji was Mr. Rengoku’s Tsuguko! His training was so grueling that everyone ran away, but I’m told that Ms. Kanroji never gave up!”

蜜璃「だって、煉獄さんの稽古はとっても厳しいけど、すごく真剣で熱がこもったものだったから」

Mitsuri “Datte, Rengoku-san no keiko wa tottemo kibishii kedo, sugoku shinken de netsuga komotta-monodatta kara.”

Mitsuri “Well, that’s because even though Mr. Rengoku’s training was really hard, it was also very serious, and there was so much passion in it!”

炭治郎「想像できるなあ」

Tanjiro “Sozo dekirunaa”

Tanjiro “I can totally picture that!”

蜜璃「柱の紹介だったら、煉獄さんの紹介もしないとじゃない？」

Mitsuri “Hashira no shokai dattara, Rengoku-san no shokai mo shinaito janai?”

Mitsuri “If you’re going to introduce the Hashira, shouldn’t we talk about Mr. Rengoku, too?”

炭治郎「そうですね！」

Tanjiro “So desune!”

Tanjiro “That’s a good idea!”

蜜璃「大正コソコソ噂話。煉獄さんはカッコイイお兄様！一緒に修行して色んなこと教えてもらったし、可愛がってもらったの！それにね、煉獄さんもいっぱい食べるのよ～！こ～んなおっきな釜いっぱいに炊いたさつまいもご飯をね、二人で食べたの～！」

Mitsuri “Taisho koso-koso uwasa-banashi. Rengoku-san wa kakkoii onii-sama! Issho ni shugyo-shite ironna koto oshiete morattashi, kawaigatte morattano! Soreni ne, Rengoku-san mo ippai taberunoyo～! Kōnna okkina kama ippai ni taita satsumaimo-gohan o ne, futaride tabetano～!”

Mitsuri “A Taisho-era secret! Mr. Rengoku’s a cool big brother! While I was training with him, he taught me all kinds of things, and he treated me well! Not only that, but Mr. Rengoku is a big eater, too! We’d have sweet potato rice cooked in a pot this big, and the two of us would eat it all up!”

煉獄杏寿郎「わっしょい！」

Kyojuro Rengoku “Wasshoi!”

Kyojuro Rengoku “Heave-ho!”

蜜璃「わっしょい！」

Mitsuri “Wasshoi!”

Mitsuri “Heave-ho!”

蜜璃「とってもいい思い出なの！」

Mitsuri “Tottemo ii omoide nano!”

Mitsuri “Such a lovely memory for me!”

炭治郎「うわぁ～！俺も一緒にさつまいもご飯、食べたかったです」

Tanjiro “Uwaa～! Oremo issho ni satsumaimo-gohan, tabetakatta desu.”

Tanjiro “Wow, I wish I could’ve had some sweet potato rice with you, too!”

杏寿郎「懐かしいな。俺も覚えているぞ。いよいよ鬼舞辻との戦いだな。頼んだぞ」

Kyojuro “Natsukashii na. Oremo oboete iruzo. Iyo-iyo Kibutsuji tono tatakai dana. Tanonda zo.”

Kyojuro “What a blast from the past! I remember that, too! And now, you’ll be battling Muzan Kibutsuji! I’m counting on you!”

蜜璃「今、煉獄さん、いたよね…」

Mitsuri “Ima, Rengoku-san, itayone…”

Mitsuri “Mr. Rengoku… was here just now, wasn’t he?”

炭治郎「はい…」

Tanjiro “Hai…”

Tanjiro “Yes…”

蜜璃「夢じゃないよね？！」

Mitsuri “Yume ja naiyone?!”

Mitsuri “It wasn’t a dream, was it?”

炭治郎「きっと…！」

Tanjiro “Kitto…!”

Tanjiro “I don’t think so.”

蜜璃「炭治郎君！」

Mitsuri “Tanjiro-kun!”

Mitsuri “Tanjiro!”

炭治郎「はい！」

Tanjiro “Hai!”

Tanjiro “Yes?”

蜜璃「絶対、鬼舞辻を倒そうね！」

Mitsuri “Zettai, Kibutsuji o taosone!”

Mitsuri “Let’s defeat Kibutsuji for sure, okay?”

炭治郎「はい、倒します。必ず！」

Tanjiro “Hai, taoshimasu. Kanarazu!”

Tanjiro “Right, we’re going to defeat him! No matter what!”
