The Canadian and Ecuadorian governments continue to forge ahead with free trade agreement (FTA) plans, despite opposition from social movements and Indigenous Peoples within Ecuador, along with rampant instability. In these negotiations, the spotlight is on the Canadian mining industry. Canadian mining investments in Ecuador are valued at $1.8 billion, with Canada’s trade commissioner noting that Canadian companies are “leading investors” in Ecuador’s mining sector. The trade commissioner also praises Ecuador’s “mining-friendly legal framework.” On March 5, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa met with Justin Trudeau in Ottawa. Both leaders welcomed “the imminent launch of negotiations toward a Canada-Ecuador free trade agreement.” The day before, Noboa spoke at the 2024 convention of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), an annual event that promotes Canadian mining interests globally. March 4 was “Ecuador Day” at PDAC, and Noboa used the opportunity to promote his country as a “mining destination” to Canadian investors. This is despite what MiningWatch Canada calls “serious human rights violations [that shed] light on the state of conflict over mining projects in peasant and Indigenous territories” in Ecuador.

i based the flag on my own dollgender flag design, which was intended to be a simpler version of the linked dollgender flag with colors that also represented neutrality; i swapped the pinks and purple for shades of blue and indigo!

Jeongin or I.N. as he prefers, loves the human world. On one of Seungmin and Chans trips to the human world they see what the think is a another younger human boy working in a cafe. Much to Seungmin's bewilderment he feels an even stronger pull to this boy then he does to Chan. Seungmin begs Chan to collect the boy and Chan does. Both are shocked when the boy is actually a 300 year old fox spirit.

MinIn/JiLix Christmas Cookies

“And then all that’s left to do is decorate the cookies with powdered sug- ah!”

Jeongin’s head shoots up from where he was focused on reading the preparation method of their dinner at the sound of the startled sound from Minho’s mouth. “Hyung?” He inquires, worried for Minho first, but at the prolonged silence for his other friends as well. “Hyungs?”

He’s pushing himself up from his chair, hurrying over to the kitchen. Just as he reaches the door opening, the giggles start inside. He rounds the corner in time to see the last of the dust cloud settle. His three hyungs are covered in a fine layer of white, powdered hair, powdered sweaters and even more powdered hands and trays.

“Well,” Felix says, voice funnily low despite his high-pitched giggles. “The cookies are decorated.” His giggles become full-on laughter, as do Jisung’s. Minho looks between the two of them, lips pursed at first but eyes endlessly fond. Eventually the fondness slowly folds his lips into a smile as well.

“What the hell happened?” Jeongin decides to ask, looking between the three of them and raising his eyebrows briefly. The box of powdered sugar is in Jisung’s hand, but the lid in Felix’s, and that is most likely the explanation for all of it as well. Minho’s the first to look to him, and Jeongin’s chest briefly aches with how quickly the fondness bleeds away and makes space for something different.

“Just a little kitchen mishap, Jeongin-ah,” he offers. “Nothing for you to worry about. Have you figured out Christmas dinner yet?”

Jeongin licks his lips, eyes roving over the settling powdered sugar dust, and the way his two other friends are still giggling uncontrollably, now drawing shapes in the sugar on each other’s skin. What else did he expect from them, really? And why did Minho decide to let them in the kitchen together in the first place? He breathes out a sigh, briefly closes his eyes and shakes his head.

“Yeah, I’m good to go,” he answers the question. “The kitchen on the other hand is not so much anymore. Everything we try to make here now will taste too sweet.”

Minho’s gaze goes around the kitchen as well, the smile reappearing on his features as he motions a hand vaguely at his two companions. “Nothing Yongboks and Jisungie can’t fix,” he offers up their time and energy without a second thought, promptly ending the giggle fest behind him. Two pairs of incredulous eyes fix on each side of Minho’s face.

“Us? Hyung! How are we supposed to clean all this in time for dinner to be made!?” Felix immediately protests, while Jisung is aiming a well-practiced pout Minho’s way, though also already looking around for things to clean with.

“You managed to ruin it in no time at all, Yongboks,” Minho replies, turning to look at him and lifting a hand to swipe some sugar off the tip of his nose. “I see nothing a vacuum cleaner and a wet cloth can’t fix.”

He easily steps backwards, out from between the two boyfriends, and then rounds the counter with their overly-decorated cookies on top of it. He’s already ruffling a hand through his hair, expelling powdered sugar in every direction, after which he brushes off his sweater and pants respectively.

“I better get washed up,” he says. “Jeonginnie’s right; everything we make would taste too sweet like this.”

Jeongin watches his two friends pout after Minho’s retreating shape, trying not to be too hyper aware of how their hyung is walking straight towards him. The moment Minho’s shoulder to shoulder with him, though, Jisung and Felix seemingly give up on their attempts to get any more mercy out of him, and close the pot of powdered sugar instead. He watches Felix lean in to lick a stripe of sugar off Jisung’s cheek, but that’s the last he gets to see before there’s a touch to his arm.

“Come on, Jeongin-ah. No point in you getting bathed in powdered sugar as well,” Minho says. He’s got that other expression on his face again, the one that always tightens Jeongin’s chest a little, makes his lungs feel like they can’t inhale enough air. He easily lets the fingers that slide around his wrist pull him out of the kitchen doorway and back into the living room, where he’d been reading up on the recipe of their planned dinner.

“Hyung,” he tries as they walk, and Minho’s head dutifully turns towards him a little more again, their eyes meeting for a split second. Jeongin’s breath gets stolen from his lungs by the look in them. It’s never as fond for him as it is for any of the others, never as soft as Minho regards Jisung with, or as mischievous as he always looks at Chan. No, Jeongin’s got a look reserved especially for him, different from all the others. Breathtaking. Squeezing his heart together in anticipation.

“Help me get all this sugar off, Yang Jeongin,” Minho says, voice flat and even, anything to keep his hyung’s emotions from bleeding through in the sound. “I’m going to have to rinse off my clothes as well.”

Jeongin lets himself be guided all the way into their little bathroom, pulling the door closed behind himself out of habit. “Hyung,” he says, as he looks back up, ready to formulate some kind of plan to most easily get the powdered sugar off of Minho’s entirety, but he doesn’t get to say anything else. Because Minho’s turned towards him now, and his face is doing that thing, and Jeongin’s lungs constrict and his heart aches in that familiar, anticipating way.

“We’ve got at least thirty minutes before they are even remotely done cleaning up their own mess,” Minho tells him, lips curling into a pleased little smirk. His hyung steps closer, backing him up against their door, and Jeongin is helpless, but only because he really wants to be. “Want to make out until they call us?”

Jeongin’s lips fold into a smile as well now, his shoulders relaxing, his body melting into Minho’s arms that come around him. “Hyung,” he scolds, bringing up a hand. “We’re supposed to be getting this powdered sugar off you.” He slides fingers into the soft hair he’s so familiar with, glancing up at it briefly before looking back down at his hyung’s face. “It’s everywhere. I should help.”

He doesn’t follow Felix’s example entirely, but it’s something similar as he runs his fingers through his hyung’s hair while kissing him soundly.

Seaweed is versatile; it provides habitat for marine life, shelters coastlines, and absorbs carbon dioxide. But in the United States, scientists are setting out to see whether seaweed has another particularly valuable trick hidden up its proverbial sleeve: to act as a salty, slimy source of precious minerals.

Within the US Department of Energy is the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), a scientific branch devoted to tackling challenging, high-risk projects on energy technologies. ARPA-E takes big swings and looks for big rewards. And so far, the agency has awarded US $5-million to three ventures investigating whether seaweed can serve as a practical source of critical materials, such as platinum and rhodium, as well as rare earth elements, including neodymium, lanthanum, yttrium, and dysprosium.

These valuable elements, which can be captured and concentrated by seaweed, are essential to the green energy transition—and to technology more broadly. Seaweed could represent an alternative to conventional mining and other prospects, such as deep-sea mining.

“There are a lot of complexities in the entire process, and that’s why it’s in the category of ‘very exploratory,’” says Schery Umanzor, a seaweed expert at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and a lead researcher on one of the projects funded by ARPA-E. “The chances of success are low. But if we succeed, then the implications are huge.”

Two key principles underlie this research, Umanzor says. For one, seaweed grows quickly and sucks minerals out of the water to do so. For two, seaweed’s cell walls are structured from sulfated polysaccharides—compounds made of long chains of sugar molecules. Sulfated polysaccharides are negatively charged, meaning they attract positively charged minerals floating nearby. “It’s pure chemistry,” Umanzor says. “Positive with negative, and then it just collects.”

if terminus and starscream ever became a thing i 100% think that somehow a decepticon 2.0 movement would come out of it. it would be a more peaceful one IMO, but also still very radical...

i think terminus would rule from the background, and just influence starscream from the shadows. if starscream was the leader of Cybertron, terminus would take that as a chance to push forward a more tolerant decepticon government, something starscream wouldn't adjust too after getting to know terminus.
