fall-in-the-dark: Thoughts on Nintendo's RPG games? (Mario & Luigi series, Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG and more...)

Well since Nintendo RPG and Mario series RPG are two different topics, i’ll just talk about the Mario RPG series

They’re all SUPER solid by design. Mario is a very popular character, Mr Video Games himself. So it’s super important for Nintendo that Mario RPG games are accessible for everyone, and it’s pretty damn hard for a RPG to be accessible for everyone because... They’re pretty much a niche genre.

And that means several things that I particularly love. Have you noticed how Mario RPGs, in comparison to the main RPGs, have very simplified, small-numbered stats? Your attacks don’t do 10k damages, they do, like, 10 damages (and, like, 3 at level one). It’s very small-scaled by design and it’s pretty genius.

Then you have the parties, and each game has its own design for that. For Mario RPG, you’ve got the classic RPG party design (and i can’t judge it sadly because i haven’t gotten more members than Mallow). For Paper Mario (the OG one and TTYD, i didn’t play those past TTYD except like the first seconds of Super Paper Mario), you get multiple companion characters, but the catch is only one of them can be in the fight with Mario, so this can bring diversity of gameplay and strategic elements to the player. Finally, for Mario & Luigi, i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE what they did for Mario & Luigi. It’s just. Super fucking straightforward. Mario & Luigi. That’s it. Only two party members for the whole game from the start, and it’s Mario & Luigi, and they’ve got pretty much the same moveset, they’re both silent protagonists, and the games, both gameplay-wise and story-wise, NEVER manage to be boring or tedious in spite of that. I could go on on the battle systems (notably on how it encourages active engagement from the players ie moving the stick in paper mario or using the A/B buttons in M&L but i’ll not dwell too much or else this post would be 1km long)

Finally, i think my FAVOURITE element of these games gotta be the way the overworld is handled. If you play a classical RPG, like, super straightforward, DQ-inspired RPG-maker stuff, you will notice that: OVERWORLD ARE FUCKING BORING. I think the greatest challenge for a RPG developper is not only to balance the fights, the moveset and all, it’s to also make the overworld interesting to navigate in. I will not list all the “bad tropes” of overworlds, however i can tell you that random encounters and “your character can only move and interact” are pretty much what a lot of people hate.

In Mario RPGs? This tends not to be the case. First and foremost, you can jump. Mario is JUMPMAN right? Mario is known for JUMPING A LOT? So he shall jump in this RPG! What do you mean, in RPG you can’t jump? Well screw that! YOU CAN JUMP IN A RPG NOW! And this allowed for the level design to be much more richer, for the dungeon/puzzles to be more entertaining, and for the whole thing to be a cool experience. Each game does it its way, but i absolutely love how Mario & Luigi games have varied platforms and how Paper Mario has the system of Companions with an overworld moveset to help you progress in the story or discover shortcuts or hidden stuff. It’s so good. ITS SO GOOD.

I like to think that Mr Game & Watch appears in 2D for anyone who’s in front of him in his own dimension i DONT KNOW How to explain this but rather like magine the Mr Game & Watch sprite being in front of you. That’s how they see him. He fucks me up i hate how nonsensical this character is holy shit i hate him

General Opinion over said character:

Mr Game & Watch is like. THE best addition you could do in Smash. I wish they weren’t cowards and did more additions to the roster like him bc it’s genius. His moveset is INCREDIBLY fun and
