Oh yeah, so I made a second pilgrimage to the Big Band Barn this year to see the Marching 110 perform in exhibition at Bands of America Grand Nationals. It was actually my first time seeing a 110 field show outside of Homecoming and it was a blast seeing the band getting such an enthusiastic response from a crowd that’s more used to competition style. The band finished their performance by playing a combined number with United Sound, an organization that pairs student musicians and mentors of all abilities with the goal of providing inclusive music education experiences. It’s such an excellent musician and I was tearing up with pride from seeing the 110 participate in that. You can see photos on United Sound’s facebook here.
As for the competing bands, I was glad to watch a couple members of my corps perform, and one of our staff members was working with another band as well.
Photo credit for the first pic goes to @miseriathome, who, when asked to buy me a coke, decided to get the souvenir cup. I decided I am obligated to keep the Lucas Oil Stadium souvenir cup, plus, if they ever raise the price, then it was smart to get one now. It was also way too cold out. It was like 70 out on Thursday before we left, I almost packed shorts, and we woke on Saturday to find that it was snowing. Seeing the Summer Band Place be snowy is surreal.

Your taste is exquisite. Even though we don't really share source material interests, your takes on things like queer bonding, power dynamics, and intimacy are *chef's kiss* Next Level Good Shit. I know "intricate rituals" is a meme, but at the same time it frequently feels like there really /aren't/ people who want to be fannish on that kind of level. I like living vicariously through your fannish analyses because the things you recognize in characters and their interactions are Gorgeous.
This is genuinely one of the best comments I've ever received recently, especially coming from you! Thank you so much!
I'm not sure what you mean by the "intricate rituals"/"being fannish on that level" bit - could you elaborate?

If you're in the US, here's an essentially crowdsourced map of all the informed consent clinics in the country which will let you have hrt without being assholes about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/asktransgender/comments/d6p05q/i_compiled_every_single_informed_consent_clinic/
Ah! Thank you so much!!

Vine as fandom deletion
miseriathome replied to your post “A New History of Fandom Purges”
Wouldn't vine shutting down count by some of these metrics?
For sure!
Video is probably the worst hit of any medium: it always has fewer good platforms, they have been mass-purged more and entirely deleted more, remix of the actual material in a property is on shakier ground than completely original words and drawings based on a property, and individual fans are less likely to keep extensive backups because video content is large.
I’m more familiar with imeem, viddler, and blip.tv because the sorts of vidders I tend to know personally were on those. I’m sure vine had plenty of fannish video art, but I was barely aware of it as a platform when it was deleted.
To be honest, that list was made with an eye to having approximately one thing per year to visually demonstrate the depth of the problem. I’m sure I could find 10x that number of entries if I delved deeper.

I'd be super interested to read it! I'm all for more academic work into the behavior ticks that make up the genre, setting it apart as it's own thing. Just data in fandoms alone is interesting. Very cool!
Ohhh, this makes me so happy! I’m gonna start it asap so i can upload for you guys! I’m excited in share my work ahahaha I’ll post it here when I’m done!

What do you consider to be social consciousness and how do you feel it gets instilled in classrooms such that it shouldn't be (if that makes sense)?
(re: one of miseriathome’s posts that I responded to) (not sure if okay to link)
I don’t have a formal definition or anything, but what I inferred was that social consciousness was something like class consciousness? Like, “society is set up into these different classes of people and the *archy definitely exists and must be dismantled” is the sense I’m getting from the phrase.
I’m not averse to things like this being taught as things people believe or even as well-supported theories. I am averse to professors going to teach, idk, sociology courses or lit courses with the idea, “I’m going to instill in students a sense of revolutionary passion”.
I suppose that I’m less uncomfortable with “I’m going to teach students to recognize the oppressions extant in our culture”, but I am still not happy about professors teaching that.
Of course, things that are true ought to be taught no matter how Controversial they are. E.g. evolutionary biology professors probably do need to assume that evolution is true even if that’s a ~hot-button issue~.
And it’s true that “the political center” is arbitrarily defined and often biased in favor of the status quo or in favor of those in power.
And it’s also true that things like, say, white supremacy, are pretty clearly real things that need to be analyzed and that exist, and that analyses based on class are true in some respects and even occasionally useful.
But there’s something that really bothers me about the idea of professors wanting to sway students to their political side.
I think that the problem I had with your original phrasing was that the goal, in my opinion, of teaching things should not be to convince people to agree with a particular political perspective. It should be to expose them to a quality argument for the political perspective and then allow them to make their own decision.
(Disclaimer: I am not in college, I am not any kind of Academic Sociologist person, I am an amateur on the internet with an interest in Social Justice(TM) who had a few shitty ideologue high school social studies/lit teachers.)

Unpopular opinion: cicadas are cuter in their nymph form than in their adult form
Didn't know this was a hot debate. I wasn't even sure what cicadas looked like (only what they sound like lmao) but having looked them up, I don't really think they're cute at all. I'm not a fan of the red eyes. I do prefer a fully grown bug though.

miseriathome replied to your post “This shit is why sociological education should be more fucking...”
I'm mad I had to discover the field of sociology for myself when I was already a teenager, YEARS AFTER we were already doing career aptitude tests in school to start thinking about our prospective life paths
It’s really fucked up. Like not only is it cordoning off a field of study that stands to benefit us all behind massive access barriers, but it’s also denying young people the tools to interrogate their societies, understand the failures and successes thereof, and work towards the betterment of themselves and their communities.
