Wow it’s been a few years since I’ve been on tumblr.

An update on the Evo -

Has been FBO E85 for a few years now, although have upgraded the turbo, intercooler system, got it cammed while deleting MIVEC, and a handful of other smaller scale upgrades (laundry list). Of course the new SSR MS3 Professor’s which I’ve been eyeing for a good while, and last minute found a custom metallic blue I couldn’t resist coating the faces with. Wrapped in Yokohama Advan Apex V601’s.

To pair with the new SSR’s, I also got the Brembo’s repainted a custom highlighter with silver metal flake. Pretty happy with the outcome! Thanks to Evo Dynamics and BSP Motorsports.

Honestly a bit hard to capture the highlighter color properly on the Brembo’s, especially with the flake. One of the best ways to see it is through a video (provided on my IG highlights @ theaustinhines)

It's different from previous Mitsubishi cars.

Asti. Asti? What kind of car was the Asti? I'm sorry to Asti owners, but it was such an inconspicuous car that such conversations were having.

However, when you see the actual car, it's pretty cool. The RX with the MIVEC engine in particular has a powerful, fearless look with its front mask. It also looks fast.

Of course, it's not just a feeling, it's actually fast. The lap time at Tsukuba Circuit is 1minute34.8 (?), which is enough to put it in the top group of 1.6-liter sports cars. What's more, it feels a little different from previous Mitsubishi cars.

What's different is that the fun of driving has been revived. I have no intention of saying anything bad about Mitsubishi cars, but to be honest, many of their cars were boring. There are certainly cars that turn well. And there are fast cars. But the sensory aspect of driving a car that makes you feel fun is weak. It's to the point where I wonder if they're building cars based only on data.

I think the reason why Pok felt it was not fun was because there was very little information coming from the steering. That was the impression I got when I drove the Asti.

But in the new Asti, the steering is still solid, though not overwhelmingly so.

At the final corner of Tsukuba, I braked hard and turned the steering wheel. I could clearly feel the grip of the tires at that time. When I entered the middle of the corner and stepped on the accelerator, the traction of the front tires was conveyed not only by the acceleration G but also by the kickback of the steering wheel.

You may be wondering what's so interesting about that, but the feeling of being in control of the car comes from how the car responds to the driver's operations, and then when the driver makes an operation, the car responds in response to that response... and so on. It all comes down to a dialogue between the car and the driver.

Asti is capable of such exchanges, and what's more, he responds to your commands in ways you would expect.

For example, if you step on the accelerator midway through a corner, the steering will tell you how much of the tire's grip you have left to use as traction. If you step on the accelerator accordingly, the car will accelerate as you would expect.

Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution 

The long history of Mitsubishi and the Paris Dakar Rally meant that in the mid-1990s when it was time to develop the next competition car the pressure was on. It needed to be based on a current production car for homologation purposes, and a road-legal version needed to be offered for sale to the general public. Known as the Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution for obvious reasons, the new vehicle was based on the unibody shell of the second generation Pajero – however it was vastly modified, with new suspension, a wide body kit, skid plates, large mud flaps, with power provided by a 275 bhp 3.5 liter 24 valve DOHC V6 6G74 engine with MIVEC and a dual plenum variable intake.For those unfamiliar with the acronym, MIVEC stands for “Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-Timing Electronic Control” it’s a variable valve timing system that allows different timing for the intake and exhaust valves depending on load, engine speed, and driving conditions.Inside the vehicle you’ll find Recaro seats with larger bolsters than the standard Mitsubishi seats designed to keep the driver and front passenger in place even when enthusiastic off-road driving is undertaken.Other than the seats the interior looks very similar to the standard second generation Pajero, largely due to the fact that this was a low-volume homologation model and so interior parts were kept close to stock to keep costs in check.

Mitsubishi built 2,500 examples of the V55W between 1997 and 1999 for homologation purposes. Most were fitted with the 5-speed automatic transmission (with a dual range transfer case) however some received a 5-speed manual – most other specifications remained largely unchanged over the production run.

The Pajero Evolution model series would become the most successful production-based Dakar rally vehicles ever made – taking 12 victories from 1985 to 2007, even managing a historic 1-2-3 finish in 1998 which cemented its reputation as King of the Desert.
