New Year may be a time for deference and observance, but it’s also a time for laughter making lighthearted comedies a staple of the Lunar New Year season. 

Genre-twisting, mo lei tau film are some of the best examples of late 20th century Hong Kong film, just on the strange confluence of post-war pop culture references and an eye for the absurd. Also queer things.

A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora’s Box (西遊記第壹佰零壹回之月光寶盒). dir. Jeffrey Lau (劉鎮偉). 1994.

Stephen Chow’s two-part cult classic film series, A Chinese Odyssey, is a loose adaptation of Journey To The West featuring Chow’s distinctive ‘mo lei tau’ (無厘頭) style of nonsensical Cantonese comedy. Directed by Jeffrey Lau, the film stars Stephen Chow as “Joker”, a leader of a band of robbers who is, unbeknownst to himself, the reincarnation of the Monkey King. Joker and his crew are attacked by the female devils Spider Woman (Yammie Lam) and Bak Jing-Jing (Karen Mok), who seek to capture the Longevity Monk and feast on his flesh in order to obtain immortality. 

Like many of Chow’s well-known comedies, A Chinese Odyssey features broad slapstick, Cantonese wordplay, and recurring gags, one of which includes Chow’s character’s crotch repeatedly catching on fire and having to be stomped out by his gang of followers. Featuring relatively impressive special effects and a hard-to-follow plotline, A Chinese Odyssey is praised as the height of Chow’s bizarre sense of humor and irreverent filmmaking style.

Mo lei tau in the modern Hong Kong cinema

The development of an entirely new cinema genre present at the only place in the world can be considered a cultural phenomenon. A form of mo lei tau has appeared in Hong Kong during the last decades of the twentieth century. It is closely related to the linguistics which actually makes it be a word to be aware of. The Chinese language is just an umbrella, it’s a complex thing with many types of script, different alphabets and dialects. Mo lei tau is related only to Cantonese - the variety of Chinese which is spoken in Hong Kong.

Mo lei tau meaning literally traces to Cantonese ‘cannot differentiate between head and tail’. However, it is commonly translated as ‘nonsense’. The genre is described by enormously satirized action, outrageous humour, Cantonese wordplay. Mo lei tau can be either verbal or slapstick. It also frequently ignores the narrative rules of filmmaking focusing on slapstick or different ambiguous phrases the authors are making fun of. Since I don’t speak Cantonese, here is the example of verbal mo lei tau Wikipedia suggest: ‘A verbal example is the catchphrase "Chor dai yum daam cha, sik gor bau" (坐低飲啖茶，食個包), meaning "Let's sit down, take a sip of tea, and have a bao (a Chinese bun)", first uttered by Stephen Chow in the TV serial The Final Combat (蓋世豪俠). The phrase becomes mo lei tau because it is repeated in irrelevant and inappropriate situations. It also serves as a comedic device because the actions suggested by "sitting, drinking and eating" are so plain and normal’. An example of slapstick Mo lei tau is the fights scenes from “Chinese Odyssey 2002″ by Jeffrey Lau. For instance, a son of the judge is beaten heavily by many men and ends up crying with a giant ear which had swelled up becoming like ten times larger than normal size. This is nonsense, this is mo lei tau in slapstick.  The film “Chinese Odyssey 2002” mentioned above is one of the most famous examples of Hong Kong mo lei tau. It has been directed by Jeffrey Lau and produced by Wong Kar Wai. With a starry cast including Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and one of the most beautiful Chinese actresses and singers Faye Wong, Athena Chu, Vicky Zhao. The movie can be fun only for those who understand Cantonese or those who like these actors and maybe the magic touch of Wong Kar-Wai. It’s fun, though! Just like mo lei tau - nothing special, but this is the type of Chinese comedy which doesn’t strike the Western viewer as totally insane stuff. 

Another unmistakable example of mo lei tau can be found in the cinema of Stephen Chou. A first reference here is the 1995 film King of Comedy. Moreover, even famous Hong Kong films of Jackie Chan are often considered an example of this genre. All-in-all, mo lei tau is not such a great thing in the history of cinema. It is important as a cultural and linguistic phenomenon and might be interesting for those who strive to do comprehensive research on the genres and history of Chinese and Hong Kong cinema or say Oriental cinema in general.

The unstoppable trio of Stephen Chow, Ng Man Tat, and writer-director Lee Lik Chi ruled Hong Kong cinema in the 1990s with blockbuster comedies like Flirting Scholar, God of Cookery, and The King of Comedy, but their golden collaboration actually began in television. In 1989, they collaborated in two extremely popular TVB dramas, the nonsensical martial arts comedy The Final Combat and urban drama The Justice of Life, launching Stephen Chow into great fame. Fondly remembered as one of the best TVB dramas of all time, The Justice of Life features Stephen Chow and Ng Man Tat as a memorable father-son duo, with Chow displaying his unique brand of motormouth "mo lei tau" everyman humor that would later drive his films.
