Reminiscing about my HOA phase again. . .

#watched a playthrough of a supermassive game so mid and annoying (Casting of Frank Stone)#that I had to go and watch a playthrough of a half decent supermassive game with awesome setpieces (House of Ashes) to calm down #<- I say that first thing as a DBD fan/player btw 😭 I'm not here to hate just cause #god... a lot of my art/doodles from then are kinda dookie but i still like a few of them a lot #and i still really like that one big crazy ghost idea of mine... So it turns out that this system can interpret any 2d image sequence, not just live webcam feeds. I decided to test that by feeding it some animation reference clips. While it's not perfect, I'm quite impressed with how closely it tracks!

these are just screenshots I grabbed from my friend’s insta but I recently got to show my XR art to a couple of dancers from Switzerland who own a motion-capture studio and it was FASCINATING watching they way they moved as they interacted with my stuff!!

I created a magical forest with floating jellyfish and crystal orbs, and they moved through it with such grace and delicate hand motions that I felt like I could sense what they were seeing even though I was just looking on from outside

#incessant meowing #i always fail to record video of things like this kshsgsh #i get caught up in the moment and don’t want to be pulling out my phone yknow!!#anyways it was wonderful meeting them and we had more in common than i thought #for example they are also hoping to start a residency program at their company #for dancers who want to experiment with mocap for virtual performances!#there’s so much love and passion for art in tech right now #picture journal #also this happened at ar house!#i’ve been trying to stop by more often to help out with stuff there #cohorts aren’t happening anymore so it’s just a third space for the local xr community #events will be starting up again eventually though #and i’ll be hosting some workshops myself!!

i wanna say something small about the whole AI art thing.

in my opinion, AI is not going to take over the art industry. why? because many years ago the exact same thing happened with mocap when it started being used in animation. it got so big that even disney hopped on the mocap bandwagon (it's called aliens need moms and it's one of their worst movies). while it now has a place and a function within the industry, it wasn't the career stopping monster it was made out to be. a small handful of movies that used mocap came out, and the only one that was any good was monster house (although polar express is still an iconic movie).

and while you could argue it's due to the uncanny valley effect, i would argue AI has just as many offputting flaws. and after a few years, how people feel about Mocap has settled down, and i can see the same thing happening with AI.

now this isnt a definitive yes or no to what is going to happen, it's more of a speculation about the past and what is happening now.

ASKLFGD i'm going crazy it's not uglier by default you just have such nostalgia you can't see straight #i think people now need to understand that games were not made with sprites as a specific artistic decision.#it was just what the technology allowed.#today most games with sprites and pixel art are that way because of constraints the developers face #there's only some that choose it deliberately #and i'm also tired of pretending that mocap is bad. when it was new yea. when it's done poorly yea.#not when done competently! damn!#and to be clear i love 2d games. ok. i want more #but that doesn't mean i want less 3d or for existing 3d games to be 2d instead

whenever i see someone wanting to get into hasu being told to just watch the stories it does get to me like. yes the with×meets arent critical to the plot but if you want to get to know the characters like on a 'personal' level (without the constraint of "needing to do something plot relevant") theyre definitely the best way. you dont want to play the worlds most incomprehensible game of charades with tsuzuri?

#i have no idea why the main story uses regular animation instead of mocap it doesnt capture tsuzuri's charms at all imo #like with the story animation only the character who is speaking moves so everyone else is frozen #and for tsuzuri who is relatively quiet she ends up just standing in a scene in a silence?#whereas in a with×meets she is constantly moving. she likes rocking back and forth and nodding and clapping at what people say #gemitus #something else i was thinking about wrt all the card art being part of the canon- (although i dont know when ceribou #went to venice for those fortune movie URs!!) is they also help to ground the story in real time #just like how half an episode of main story is released every two weeks essentially recounting the events of The past two weeks #since the last half episode. cards are released on around the same schedule. like i know eg cherry picnic are specifically set in june #bc thats not only when they were released but also the art depicts an event in the story in june mentioned in a june with×meets #and cherry picnic isnt like a 'special' set like deepness there isnt a cherry picnic plot point or anything #just saw a clip from today's holiholi and cried 💕
