Is this guy as much of a hoot as his name implies? Perhaps even a hoot and a HALF? Or more like just half a hoot? Let us discuss.

Super Mario 64 was around the time when Nintendo seemed to think of owls as a Good Guy Animal. They would not dare make an owl an enemy! In Super Mario Land 2, Super Mario 64, and Wario Land 2 and 3, owls are only portrayed as helpful to the player, and I guess they were really trying to make "owls=good" an overarching truth in video games.

And it worked I guess! Everyone respects owls! They're the Smart Birds, even though they are really not notably smart, but NOT stupid like some people might want you to believe! Animals do what they evolved to do, and they do it well, and it is stupid to call them stupid for not excelling at unrelated things.

But what about Hoot himself? Is he a Wise Cartoon Owl?

He's really just sort of a regular guy! When Mario climbs up his tree, he is bothered to be woken up during daylight, but this stand-up fellow decides to let Mario hang on to his claws and go for a ride with him! That's so nice of him! Far more courteous than most would be in that situation! But is it safe to be flying while sleepy, and with a passenger, no less? Is it like tired driving? I don't know! I'm not a bird!

Hoot appears in Whomp's Fortress in 64, and is added to some other vertical-focused areas in the DS remake, which is very nice! It helps ease the annoyance of having to venture back up the same parts of the level over and over again after being booted out with each Star. What a convenient owl this guy is! I would rate him a hoot and a half, easily!

Of course, he cannot hold Mario forever, and it is at this point that I may have to dock that half of a hoot. Not because he has his limitations- that's just natural!- but because he is RUDE about it! He tells Mario he needs to lay off the pasta, and come on, man! That's personal! He loves his pasta, don't try to deprive him of it! Maybe you're just envious because you have to eat woodland critters instead of getting to enjoy pasta. Maybe if you asked nicely, Mario could find a place in Brooklyn where you could get some spaghetti and ratballs! Mm-mm!

Oh no! I'm sorry, Hoot! I didn't mean all that to criticize you, I just wanted you to be more considerate of others' feelings! I never wanted you to develop a severe gambling addiction!

Here's a mod that replaces around 70% of base game hood dog noises with very quiet bird sounds.

*There's also an option to disable Pets EP animal sounds, but that will only be useful for people who don't use Pets EP features.

'Less Barking in hood view' mod package contains 36 dog barking & howling resources that I've found in base game Sound/Misc file. Yes, 36 - and that's not even all (!)

Lot background sounds are a mix of base game sfx and a f*ckload of additional, louder barking that comes with Pets EP.

So without Pets you might also hear some distant, quiet barking, but it's sparse. With Pets EP, it gets louder when you move the camera near the lot borders. It seems certain objects also emit barking sounds, like the trash can and mail box (??). It can even be heard in CAS.

Those sounds really bother me, but I don't like to play with background sfx switched off and was looking for a solution. Unfortunately, there's no perfect one :( - most of the Pets Misc resources seem to use SPX1 sound file format and cannot be opened (or at least I have no idea how to open it). So I couldn't browse and remove only specific files.

2. edited Misc.package is a PETS EP game file with all sounds removed from it. Unlike the mod, this file has custom installation instructions - it goes into your Sims 2 game installation folder /The Sims 2 Pets/TS Data/Res/Sound/

If you replace that file, pets in your game will be silent. Some other sounds related to Pets EP might also be missing.

Base game background sounds like little birds singing, crickets, frogs, owls hooting at night are NOT affected by this mod.

*I've been browsing TS2 sfx resources for a while now, extracted various sounds and replaced some with existing resources ( I haven't managed to replace any with new files tho) - it is probably possible (?) but files need to be in .xa format.

it takes less than 5 minutes to search somebody's blog and i urge everybody to do that because the slaughter of palestinians at the hands of zionists is not something we should be taking lightly. cutting off zionists in this fandom + others is the least we can do. quality fic and art and meta are not worth the deaths of 30k+ people.

also. say their names. vague-posting and turning people into hoot owls when they start asking who/what is just making more trouble for no reason and waters down the severity of the situation.

I was wondering, could we know more about what exactly happened to Ringing Howl and Echoed Hoot? Did Howl die at the scene of the attack, and how bad were Hoot's injuries? I'm applying for a surgeon and want to incorporate the incident into his history if possible!

Sure!

The incident happened 42 moons ago, very shortly after Scorching Rays came into power. The two Saplings ventured into the Gloom Weald after sundown. Echoed Hoot was attacked first, his back right leg caught in the attacker's jaws, before Ringing Howl jumped in to defend him - this is the point where Hoot blacked out. When he came to, he found Howl dead at the scene, having succumbed to extensive injuries. A night patrol happened upon them shortly after, and rushed them back to camp.

Aside from his mangled leg, Hoot's injuries were thankfully mild and not life-threatening. He had a few scrapes and miscellaneous wounds, but his leg was broken below the knee and heavily lacerated. After several weeks in the Physician's Ward, treated with splints and extensive wound care, Hoot was able to make a good recovery, though he still walks with a noticeable limp.
