About The Institute

The Magnus Institute is an academic institution in London, England which researches paranormal and unexplained paranormal happenings around the world. It has been in operation since 1818. The institute has 4 main departments:

The Archives, in which statements about paranormal encounters given by various people are stored.

Artifact Storage, which stores various items that are encountered by statement givers or otherwise believed to have supernatural properties.

The Library, which is open to the public unlike the other departments, and houses books on the paranormal.

Research, which as the name would suggest does research on the findings of the other departments.

The current Head of the Institute is Elias Bouchard and the current Head Archivist is Jonathan Sims.

(An OOC note: This blog is set in an alternate universe of somewhere around early s2, so it is currently approximately mid-2016. The main differences so far are that Sasha survived the Prentiss attack and Ghost Hunt UK ended earlier, leading to Melanie getting hired to the Institute earlier. As the blog is likely to progress through at least a bit of the timeline it will likely pick up more differentiation as this isn’t intended to get as dark as canon, being primarily a satire blog.)

Hello, I’m Melanie King and I’m an archival assistant at The Magnus Institute. Some of you might also recognize me as the woman from Ghost Hunt UK (or unfortunately more likely, from the memes surrounding the channel’s end). I’m 29, I use she/her pronouns, and my posts are tagged with #mod melanie. A lot of my posts about the institute’s paranormal research are likely to be about ghosts since I’m very experienced with them.

Dear Doctor Nein,

I'm a psychic living on the east coast, and I was wondering what exactly your opinion was on things like psychic blockers? I know that Whispering Rock used Geodesic Psychoisolation Chambers for a time within its history, but I've never been sure if that was the best practice, considering the side-effects I've seen floating around. The reason why I ask, mostly, is because I'm trying to cope with huge bursts of power- and I mean huge, huge- while getting a BFA degree.

Mostly it's just been some pipes bursting and excess amounts of rain, but I'm worried that it will get worse if I leave it unchecked, and I don't have the money for proper training because of my schooling taking priority. If you have anything that could help me cope with some of them, I'd really appreciate the advice.

Sure! So, a few months ago we got a delivery for Artefact Storage - a weird table with a web design on it. It was linked to one of our statements, about a man who was replaced. It didn't do much for a while, until the worm attack. During that, I wound up seperated from the others and in Artefact Storage alone. While I was there, I ran into the table. I was standing there, trying to catch my breath, when I heard a voice echoing what I was saying and saw a spindly arm-like thing reaching out towards me. I beat it back with the fire extinguisher I was holding and ran away before it could get me, but I couldn't shake the feeling that it would have taken me just like the man in the statement if I had been a little slower or a little unluckier. So, I would like to advise against going into Artefact Storage alone. Don't be the one the cursed table eats. Or any of the other things in there, there's a lot of weird and potentially dangerous stuff in there.
