‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 Behind the Scenes: How Fashion Defines Each Character (PHOTOS)
by Kelli Boyle
Tumblr media
Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey (2011-2016) [mod note: on PBS in the US], set that upstairs-downstairs series at a palatial British estate on the eve of World War I. He moved his newest costume drama Stateside to the streets of New York City. Set in the late 1800s, The Gilded Age, which has its second-season premiere on Sunday, October 29 on HBO (streaming on Max), pits the new money of railroad barons against the old money of New York society. The powerful fight for control of the city and use their wealth to measure social success. And dressing for success was its own full-time occupation.
When researching women’s fashion in 1800s New York, the show’s costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone saw one thing clearly: “Their life was a catwalk. There was this enormous excitement” when the ladies trekked the bustling, dusty streets of Manhattan. Her job was to recreate that excitement for contemporary viewers of The Gilded Age.
Fashion as a Sign of Status
Who’s doing all this promenading? Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) arrived in NYC with no money and was taken in by her aunts Ada (Cynthia Nixon) and Agnes (Christine Baranski), both living off an inheritance. Then the newly affluent Russells—headed by railroad baron George (Morgan Spector) and wife Bertha (Carrie Coon), who is determined to break into polite society—moved in across the street.
Tumblr media

The frill thrills continue in Season 2, especially in a pivotal garden party scene (pictured below) that TV Insider observed being filmed in September 2022 at New York’s lavish Old Westbury Gardens estate. (Westbury House was previously home to an heir of the Phipps family, real-life Gilded Age figures whose patriarch made his fortune alongside Andrew Carnegie at his steel company.) On set was Fellowes, whose smart black suit and tie were the only dark hues around.

Historically Accurate Costumes
It’s a testament to the wardrobe department that the stunning colors of the sprawling grounds nearly pale in comparison to the vibrancy of the women’s period garb. Despite the sepia-toned images in history books, Walicka-Maimone says, those bright tints are decidedly historically accurate. She has a library of more than 35,000 reference images to prove it.
“It’s shocking to our modern eye to see the explosion of color from that period,” she said. Production designer Bob Shaw (who won an Emmy for his work on Gilded Age) was present to share his creative process, which, just as Walicka-Maimone described of her own work, is “deeply steeped in history.”
Tumblr media
Nicole Brydon Bloom joins the cast for Season 2, pictured here at the garden party with Blake Ritson’s Oscar van Rhijn (Credit: Barbara Nitke/HBO)
He does note that, when deciding between “what is correct and what feels correct,” the latter always wins. Creative liberties are taken to “build [character] histories into the costumes,” Walicka-Maimone added.
A Garden Party to Remember
Take Brit newcomers Dashiell Montgomery (David Furr) and his daughter, Frances (Matilda Lawler), for example. Nephew by marriage to Baranski’s Agnes, Dashiell requires more “toned-down” attire suitable for social outings, which contrasts with Season 1’s primarily business and formal menswear.
Tumblr media
Aurora Fane (Kelli O’Hara) and husband Charles Fane (Ward Horton) attend the garden party in ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 (Credit: Barbara Nitke/HBO)
Dashiell must escort Frances through society in his late wife’s absence. One consideration for Walicka-Maimone: “This is a girl who doesn’t have a mother, so there’s probably extra care from all the other family members in [dressing her],” she said.
Meanwhile, Marian, who Jacobson said is “shining this season and sees herself in [younger] Frances,” will be more open to a strategic marriage. Marian’s “not necessarily cynical” after being jilted by Tom Raikes (Thomas Cocquerel) in last season’s finale, the actress continued, but the heartbreak gives her a “spice and edge.”
Don’t count out the possibility of a romance with Larry Russell (Harry Richardson), son of the railroad titan, which was teased last year. Jacobson shared: “They will definitely continue to deepen their friendship.” Old money and new money unite!

For the past few weeks I've been working on my making my own gshade/reshade preset(s). I'm not any kind of expert, but I'm definitely picking it up faster than Blender & am planning on making them public when I've gotten it right, so I thought I'd share the progress so far.
As always, constructive feedback welcome.
Tumblr media
Sunny Side Up is almost finished, and is the preset I've been using in my game play recently. It's a soft, warm with some pinkish undertones with plenty of screen shot toggles. It's not 100% yet, but I've picked a range of screenshots that I think show it off quite well. All taken in the season of Spring, and are unedited. I do use the sunblind lighting mod by softerhaze and the Ghibli Clouds replacement by Miiko. When published the download post will feature screenshots of different skin coloured sims as well as locations & lighting options.

also!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here is another preset that I've been getting started. Haze will have a more sepia, overlayed feel with a toggle for adding dust overlays like an old movie, I don't think I can make them animated, but it should work for some more weathered screenies.

I made my first gshade preset!
It's called vivid memories✨
For some reason I like the colors in game with @softerhaze's sunblind lighting mod only. So I just focused on clarifying and giving it a cartoon-ish vibe. I play my game on laptop so it's gameplay friendly without the toggle keys. But, for those who has fantastic computer specs, I added bloom, ambientlight, adof for more coziness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
with toggle keys
I added ambientlight to give it a bit of dusty kind of feature to it. I wanted it to look like granny's old photos if you understand what I'm tryna say. Cozy, grungy, and whole lot of sepia tint.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
without toggle keys
As you can see I didn't do anything to the colors in game. Instead I added mxao and some sharpenings. It is far from being heavy so you can use it as a base preset!! You may edit in anyway you like and give me credit when you want to💗 I just wanted to make laptop friendly gshade.
For all the laptop simmers out there, you are not alone...😂

The Doctor Who FFXIV Glamour Collection - Masterpost + Commentary
Alright, here it is. I’ve teased it, I’ve talked about it, and now you’re getting it: the Doctor Who glamour collection. In case you didn’t know, two of my most persistent hyperfixations are Doctor Who and Final Fantasy XIV. Heck, I even wrote a crossover between them. Then, I made a meme post assigning a job (in-game class) to each Doctor. Which of course, planted an idea in my head: why not make an outfit for each of those jobs I assigned, each based on the corresponding Doctor? And thus the Doctor Who glamour collection was born.
Note that while the outfit is based on the respective Doctor, changing your character’s design/race/gender (beyond switching haircuts and minor stuff) costs real-life money, so you’re stuck with my Au Ra gal as the model. I did make an effort to at least have a matching hair color, though. (With occasional highlights for spice.)
I’ve made each outfit its own post (mainly because tumblr image cap), and will be linking them from here, the “masterpost” (which will actually come out last.)
First Doctor - Scholar
Second Doctor - Bard
Third Doctor - Monk
Fourth Doctor - Dancer
Fifth Doctor - Paladin
Sixth Doctor - Red Mage
Seventh Doctor - Black Mage
Eighth Doctor - Dragoon
War Doctor - Dark Knight
Ninth Doctor - Astrologian
Tenth Doctor - Gunbreaker
Eleventh Doctor - White Mage
Twelfth Doctor - Sage
Thirteenth Doctor - Summoner
If you just want to see the pretty pictures, click on those links! Everything below here will just be explanations and details.
A lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into acquiring the gear for each set, leveling each job to a high enough level to use said gear (can’t glamour a higher level gear’s appearance onto a lower level gear), and of course, taking the pictures. Taking the pictures was difficult for several reasons, but the major lynchpin was the fact that I used external tools (aka mods, which are kind of a no-no) to give an era-appropriate look for some of the shots of each Doctor. Hopefully it comes off well!
Oh, and if you’re curious: the most expensive single gear pieces were War and 9’s chest pieces. Damn modern-looking gear is always pricey! I dropped a lot of money at the Aesthetician to change haircuts, too.
The specific setup for the eras was as followed:
1st/2nd: Monochrome, RetroCRT, Film Grain, sometimes Cathode
3rd/4th: VHS_RA (chroma blur at 20), Colourfulness, LumaSharpen, Radiant GI
5th/6th/7th: VHA_RA (chroma blur at 10) Colourfulness, LumaSharpen, Radiant GI, Film Grain, sometimes Cathode
War: LumaSharpen, Colourfulness, Tint (Sepia)
8/Nu Who: LumaSharpen, Colourfulness, Radiant GI, and occasionally HexLensFlare
The gear and dye used for each glam will be listed in its corresponding post.
If people are interested, I might consider doing glams and photo shoots for the Fugitive, Fourteenth, Fifteenth, and/or any other extended universe Doctors! I also have some ideas for some companions that I might use.
Here’s some extended reasoning on the job choices for each Doctor, including both lore and in-game mechanics:
First Doctor as Scholar: Scholar is a healer, and in fact one of the first healer jobs in FFXIV, so I figured it would make sense to give the first Doctor a job that closely aligned with the fact that they’re, y’know, the Doctor. But, with regards to gameplay, Scholar’s kit is considered by many to be a little janky. So, perfect, for the wobbliest-set days of the First Doctor!
Second Doctor as Bard: Bard is very much a support class, which keeps with the theme of sticking close to Doctor-y jobs early on. Otherwise: yeah, it’s because of the recorder. Also, the Second Doctor is a bit more trickster-y, and Bard is a job that involves planning ahead and also keeping well on top of all your cooldowns, which I think Two would be able to pull off!
Third Doctor as Monk: It’s because of the Venusian Aikido. And all the spirituality in his era, as well, but mainly the Aikido. Monk is considered to be one of the more difficult jobs to play, to the point of your computer’s frame rate factoring into extreme high-end play, but if any Doctor could manage that, it would be the Third.
Fourth Doctor as Dancer: I will freely admit this is one of the more arbitrary choices. Overall, I think the Dancer job’s vibes and flow fit well with Four’s Bohemian spirit and flowing scarves.
Fifth Doctor as Paladin: Paladin is seen as kind of the most vanilla job in the game with the most straightforward flavoring, which I thought fit Five’s vibes. Paladins are the typical sword-and-board job, but I chose to not display the shield, to better evoke a cricket bat. And, as Paladin’s name implies, it has better party defense buffs than, say, Dark Knight, which does fit a Doctor with as crowded a TARDIS as the Fifth.
Sixth Doctor as Red Mage: Totally not biased here, Red Mage is one of my two mains, but regardless of that it’s a perfect fit for Sixie. Red Mage is a damaging caster job, but is actually consistently the weakest caster in exchange for great utility, including the best resurrection spell in the game. A flashy mage with a support focus is perfect for our loud technicolor shouty man with a heart of gold! Red Mage’s Limit Break (big super move) is kind of infamous for being so bright that for the few seconds when it’s going off, it’s difficult to see what’s going on in the fight, sometimes leading to deaths… which is very funny and fitting.
Seventh Doctor as Black Mage: Probably the easiest and most obvious job choice on this entire list, Black Mage is considered a difficult job that takes a lot of time to master, and often requires you to plan out your movements and attacks in advance to react to the mechanics of the fight. (In some of the most difficult fights in the game, Black Mages will often plan out every button they push for the first several minutes in order to maximize the effectiveness they’re getting out of every resource in their kit.) This makes Black Mage the no-brainer choice for our favorite little master manipulator. (Alas, no umbrella staff in FFXIV… yet.)
Eighth Doctor as Dragoon: I originally had Eight as a Reaper, but in trying to take the pictures, the vibes just didn’t match. So I pivoted him to the job that shares Reaper’s gear: Dragoon. Gonna be honest, this one was just vaguely gothic, and also what are vortisaurs if not time vortex dragons?
War Doctor as Dark Knight: Dark Knights have the aesthetic of a brooding edgelord, but lore-wise, they gain their power from their desire to protect the innocent and punish the wicked: a desire born from love. Fitting for a vilified Doctor who only ever wanted to do what was right…
Ninth Doctor as Astrologian: Astrologians use magical power channeled from distant stars to cast time magic, predict the future, and heal the wounded. Fitting for basically any Doctor, but especially so for the one who delivers the line about feeling the turn of the Earth. Furthermore, Astrologians deal the least damage of any job in the game: perfect for the most pacifistic and peace-seeking Doctor of them all.
Tenth Doctor as Gunbreaker: Here’s a fun one, a gun “breaker” for the “Man Who Never Would [Fire A Gun]”. What weapon does a Gunbreaker use? Oh yeah, a Gunblade. More like “The Man Who Totally Would And In Fact Has.” I think this juxtaposition highlights the Tenth Doctor’s emotional, even vengeful nature… and to add another layer: while Gunbreaker is a flashy, high-damage job, it is, at the end of the day, a Defender job. Calling back to Five’s Paladin, perhaps? (Also, Gunbreakers wear long coats, and the Tenth Doctor wears long coats.)
Eleventh Doctor as White Mage: White Mage is my other main, so I mean it with love when I say White Mages are the epitome of healers with a god complex, who mainly only keep the party alive to feel that sweet sweet satisfaction of saving peoples’ lives… and also to charge up their super big attack that can only be charged by healing. Meant to be a bit evocative of Eleven as the epitome of the Lonely God idea. Also, White Mage is a dead easy job to play, that even Eleven’s hyperactive brain could handle.
Twelfth Doctor as Sage: Okay, now we’re getting into the juicy stuff. Sage is the other shield healer in the game, the first being Scholar. But Sage is newer, flashier, more anime, and smoother to play. Are you thinking Twice Upon A Time yet? Sages, flavor-wise, are the epitome of combat medics… just as the Twelfth Doctor is the one to make the title of “Doctor of War” his own. Time is a flat circle! Thirteenth Doctor as Summoner: Also tying in with the First Doctor, Summoner and Scholar share an experience pool: so long as you have both unlocked, leveling one also levels the other. But while Scholar is a healer, Summoner is a (damage-dealing) caster that focuses on summoning entities to help you out. As the Thirteenth Doctor was born of the Twelfth Doctor’s resolution to his character arc- and with a chance meeting with the First- Thirteen being a Summoner would show how she carries that legacy but also has a fresh start with some fun new friends. (Also, Summoner is the easiest job in the game, and while Thirteen isn’t the most ADHD Doctor, she’s definitely up there.)

(endgame zestiria spoilers)
the NPC they point to being selene isn't visible in the actual cutscene, but this the picture they used for the OWG profile
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's also the woman who tells michael that muse went to the shrine in an earlier scene. i'm almost certain this is selene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But in the manga, which heavily implies Sorey's father is Heldalf, Selene instead has brown hair and green eyes, and Heldalf remarks that Sorey does look like her.
Tumblr media
It makes me wonder if they really had decided on Sorey's parentage yet in the game, since the game makes no reference to who Sorey's father is besides a one-off line from Sorey about how Heldalf would be old enough to be "our dads". None of the guidebooks mention it either (and I know from X2 that they would have mentioned it there).
But fictional genetics logic usually dictates a kid resembles their parents in some way. If you remove the sepia filter via modding, you can see game!Selene's eyes are brown.
Tumblr media
I sort of doubt they intended Sorey to have two blond parents, neither of whom resemble him at all 🤔

What reshade settings could produce this type of preset? I have been adjusting and I do have all my settings maxed to be able to produce this. I believe this is enabled MXAO as well. But I just can’t find the right combination.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi!
Are you specifically talking about the shadows (which you correctly identify as MXAO) or the whole colour palette and contrast/lighting as well?
If it's the former, I made a guide a while ago that explains all the settings in MXAO, what they do, and how to use them to create the sort of shadows you want: USING MXAO
If it's the latter, well that depends on a lot of factors. Do they use a lighting mod? If so, that will impact the base they're working from.
There are endless shaders that allow for different types of colour grading. I particularly like Prod80's shaders. The selective colour shaders in particular offer a really good level of control. (Tip: the whites, neutrals and shadows sections at the bottom are the most powerful, don't forget about them.) There's also Lightroom in the qUINT shader package, which also has roygcbm channel separation. You could start with either of those, and maybe Prod80's colour balance shader too, to get some good colour adjustment going on. You can also control saturation in those shaders - the above pictures have reduced the overall saturation.
As for how you should adjust the colours, it looks very sepia-toned, so focus on reducing blues and greens, especially in the whites and neutrals if using selective colour.
Ultimately it's near impossible for me to say how to achieve the same without trying to do it myself. You can try 6 different colour grading shaders and if they happen to not be the ones that the preset maker used you may not get the same results. Do you know those pictures were taken with a preset? If they used Photoshop or similar you may never be able to recreate it exactly.

While I mod this game here's some of the things I did for a month.
I was helping make a goofy mod of Undertale, it probably won't ever be uploaded because it was pretty personal but I can show the sprites I did

The Fight button changed to Spin because Frisk was changed to Crash Bandicoot

The Peak of the mod, The PriceMaster over Muffet, with things like the webs and table changed to fit in.

The final intro image, did my best to make Crash fit with the sepia colours.

Starfield Filters
So there was a shot from one of the Starfield trailers from 2022, set in Akila City.
Tumblr media
Looks pretty good, right?
Well, in the actual released game, when you go, you're hit with this:
Tumblr media
A sepia-tone filter over everything. It looks horrible. But it turns out, when you remove that filter:
Tumblr media
It looks so much better!
There's filters in a lot of other places in the game, and they all just make the game look worse, imo.
Luckily, I found a mod to remove them:
I don't know if other people feel this way, but I find the filters really ugly and that they take away from the experience, rather than add to it.
