Kristen Egan’s “After the Rain.”
Currently on view at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco, California is artist Kristen Egan’s solo exhibition of new sculptures, “After the Rain.”
Egan is a mixed media artist who specializes in masks and small sculptures. Her creative process relies on the organic shapes of natural materials like gourds, antlers and tree branches. Adding details with carved wood, paper clay and acrylic paints, her work often juxtaposes bright patterns and ornamentation against raw or weathered surface textures.

Catherine Borowski has always had an active imagination. As a child, she dreamed that the car park on her north London council estate would be transformed into a garden. The reality was quite different. “No one had a car, so it was empty, grey and depressing,” she says. Now a sculptor and event producer, Borowski has made it her mission to fill unloved urban spaces with flowers – albeit virtual ones.
She and her partner Lee Baker are the founders of Graphic Rewilding, a project to install huge nature-inspired artworks into the urban landscape. “Where real rewilding isn’t possible, our goal is to inject the colour and diversity of nature into rundown spaces, urging people to notice – and find joy in – the world around them,” says Baker.
The pair believe that flowers possess serious powers, even when they’re not real. “We know that spending time in nature is good for us, but studies show that even pictures of plants have a positive effect on the mind,” says Baker. He cites research published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, which found that imagery of plants in hospital waiting rooms can help reduce feelings of stress in patients.
Baker, a painter and music producer, has long understood the benefits of biophilic design. Having suffered a breakdown 10 years ago, he found that drawing flowers was the only way to soothe his buzzy brain. “I would set out to draw dystopian landscapes, representative of my state of mind, but I’d always end up drawing flowers, which uplifted me,” he says.
It was around this time that Baker met Borowski, joining her production company as creative director. The pair have collaborated ever since, launching Graphic Rewilding in 2021. Since then, they’ve installed floral murals at locations including Earl’s Court station, Lewes Castle and Westfield Shopping Centre in Shepherd’s Bush – all hand drawn by Baker. “We love galleries, but we focus on public art,” he says. “This way, our work is out there for everyone to enjoy.”
This year the pair have grand plans to create a series of stained glass pavilions (think greenhouses with colourful floral-themed panels), which they hope might find homes at Kew Gardens and the Eden Project. “The way light shines through the glass is magical,” says Borowski.
Even so, they concede that art is no match for Mother Nature. “Some people have suggested that our project detracts from real rewilding efforts. But both can co-exist,” says Borowski. “Of course we want more green spaces.” adds Baker. “But we aren’t gardeners. We’re artists. In the absence of nature, we want to create inspiring spaces through art.”
Overall, the response has been hugely positive. “The joy that these artworks bring is palpable,” says Baker, highlighting an early project in Crawley, West Sussex. “Many people in the town were employed by Gatwick airport and Covid had taken its toll,” he recalls. In a bid to spread some joy, the duo painted brick walls, billboards, benches and even bins with their signature floral flair. “Peoples’ reactions were heartwarming. There were so many smiling faces,” he says.
Elsewhere, in Earl’s Court, the pair transformed “a ratty piece of tarmac” into a modern-day pleasure garden, which is now often filled with children dancing and doing cartwheels on the way home from school. “Putting art into a place that previously felt unloved feels like cultivating joy where there was none,” reflects Borowski. “If something like this had been installed on my estate when I was a kid, it would have been a dream come true.”

The Celtic word for Oak is “daur”, the origin of the modern English word “door”, and thus the concept of doorways to otherworlds was bound into the very meaning of oak trees for the Ancient Celts. The Tree of Life (Crann Bethadh) is an tree in a graphic representation of harmony and balance, nature’s power coming together in an intertwined lacework of beauty, symmetry, and resilience. Oak trees, with their impressive size, longevity, and strength were worshipped and seen as sacred beacons for the gods. The Tree of Life embodies the interconnected nature of the world. The branches spread in a canopy of sky, while the roots reach down into the earth, and both meet in the trunk as well as the boundaries of the symbol in a singular weaving. Doorway by @spmlaw 🍃 #Verdance on view through March 4, 2023 (at Modern Eden Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cou8GCjParu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

And so on Judgement Day I am not worried.
What is there to fret over the presence of the divine?
And I know I have already let my grandparents bury their grandchild,
But what has ever been the harm in a little teeth and claws?
What am I if not an old portrait on a desk somewhere?
Judgement day is creeping closer and I have never felt more doomed.
Another bath should cleanse me hopelessly free of myself.
On Mondays I work at an art gallery that has exactly one hole near the ancient history section and a puddle near the impressionism.
It doesn't pay well and it makes me cry more than anything but when has art ever done the opposite? When have I been able to gaze into oils and truly admit I had not unravelled myself a thousand times over to recognise it?
And anyway this art gallery has all these sculptures and to tell you the truth I'm more of a portrait man myself but there is one that has lived through every last rendition of me yet
And he sits at the back behind a peeling gate and his artist statement is broken over with blood and small hands and he's nothing special, really, and it's silly to wax poetics about sticks in the mud
But I think I like it no more than I have grown fond of it. As every morning I touch-up the glaze and I paint him over in fresh polish and I fix up his skin with new, uncracked clay
And you know I'm standing here, a bleeding corpse with an eye for the wretched, and I wonder just how old this really is? Cuz sure, it's got the date of creation (day of mourning, day of funeral bells) right there next to it but oh god he's been sculpted and twisted so often is it even him anymore? Is any part of him whole?
When I repair the cracking in his skin what am I adding? What did I just take away? When my father scrubbed this artwork and when his father and his father and his did the same they weren't really cleaning so much as they were praying, huh? How much of this clay has been set from the beginning? How much modernism seeps in his bones?
My english teacher tells me poems aren't meant to be this long, Monty, you're meant to break them up into little words and say only the essentials so if I make a cut here and here and you can see, can't you, how condensed it now is? How much more palatable your words sound now that you aren't rushing them?
And when I went home that day and carved Eve's rib out and shaved my head and dumped my words heaved over into my sink until they clogged I think I understood. And I think, this understanding of relatability, of "is this even really a poem you're just saying things by now", I think that gave me the driving force to submit my resume
And so I think, Father, forsaken as you may be, I was not right and it was immoral and still you are wrong to deny me my wings and still you are wrong to chain my knees to your temple and god I know pretty little girls like me aren't any good for begging or howling or cursing but really when you've taken all my teeth and they've been stained a horrible shade of yellow and the tips are sharp as the claws on the lambs feet no Father I do not repent for myself and yes Father I will drag this helpless screaming body down your catacombs through my digestive track out of the gates of eden and Yes father I will love love love in anyway I can and No father I quite like my disgustingly miserable face and honestly I can't even recall what this was about and I don't know why your churches get the best architecture when there is an art gallery right next door do you see it? Do you see me? Exit stage left on the cabaret of displacement look at your beautiful lamb close your eyes and enjoy the buffet and so, in the grand scheme of things, Father, I think your prophetic day of Binaries will do me no good and I think I will skip today's pressured reinvention and then tomorrow I will wipe at my sculpture as I always do and I will wipe and scrub and clean it completely free of fingerprints of humanity of relation and I will clean this hollowed-out misshapen shell of a man as I always do as I always have and as you never cared to and Father I swear to you I will make something holy of your hands creation and I swear to you I will make something of this body. I swear to you I will not kill the one thing that I love.
On Monday mornings I take the blade and I carve myself up and on Monday evenings I take my artwork home wrapped in an almost smothering sheet.
Baths are good remedies for atheism, I have found.
And devotion is nice for Hell but really who's keeping score nowadays?
Portraits are not so good for the escapists, but there is always the chisel,
And wool on a lamb glints dark in the shadows of claws and howls.
And I do feel bad about mutilating that sweet grandchild of theirs into a burnt family portrait, I must admit.
But Jesus watches me scrub my hands till they bleed gold and he sees me puking up prayers over Sunday dinner so what's the fear in a little Religion?
Judgement day never seems to end and I am hopelessly doomed.

Erika Sanada’s “Home.”
Currently on view at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco, California is artist Erika Sanada’s phenomenal solo exhibition, “Home.”
On view will be new and selected works featuring her large scale, multi-figure ceramic sculptures, along with a number of exciting pieces selected by the artist and curators which have migrated "home" from exhibitions near and far. The series represents some of her most tender and delicate works to date.
Erika Sanada's early inspirations stemmed from creatures and characters of horror films. Watching these stories were a way for her to escape unpleasant realities during childhood. She creates intricate, hairless ceramic creatures—often adorable but also unsettling and bizarre.

Welcome to Luminaera
Tumblr media
Luminaera is a vibrant coastal metropolis, sprawling along the edge of the cerulean Mirasol Sea. Known for its glittering skyline, the city is a tapestry of innovation and tradition, where futuristic architecture intermingles with historical quarters that whisper tales of the past. The heart of the city is the Luminous Bay, a bustling harbor by day and a neon-lit spectacle by night, reflecting the city's name which means "era of light."
The streets of Luminaera are lined with lush greenery, with vertical gardens scaling the sides of glass towers, and eco-pods floating on the waterways that crisscross the urban landscape. The city is a hub for artists and tech visionaries alike, hosting cultural festivals that showcase light installations, holographic art, and music that resonates through the soul of the city.
Beyond the high-energy urban center lies the serene Eden Park, a vast expanse of natural beauty that offers a tranquil escape from the city's pulsing rhythm. Here, locals and tourists alike can wander through botanical gardens, meditate by lotus ponds, or explore the interactive outdoor exhibits that blend nature with immersive art.
Luminaera is not just a place but a living, breathing entity, a beacon of progress and a sanctuary of peace, ever glowing under the watchful gaze of the Lighthouse of Infinity, an iconic structure that symbolizes the city's endless pursuit of light and knowledge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of the notable residents of Luminaera:
Elara
Once upon a twilight in Luminaera, as the sky painted itself with the dusky blush of sunset and the city lights began their nightly flirtation with the darkening horizon, there wandered a girl whose eyes mirrored the very soul of the metropolis.
Her name was Elara, a spritely figure cloaked in a hoodie as enigmatic as the half-veiled stars above. Luminaera was her canvas, the bustling streets her gallery, and within her gaze dwelt a fierce determination to capture a fleeting moment that begged to be etched into eternity.
Sundown was the bewitchingly unruly hour when the historical quarters sang harmoniously with the ultra-modern skyscrapers. It was the perfect time for her—the street artist whose murals were whispered about, marveled at, sought after, yet remained as elusive as the artist herself.
A curious emblem adorned her hoodie, a little star creature with a mischievous grin, almost as if it knew secrets of the city that were hidden to all but the most inquisitive souls. Elara was more than just curious, she was a creative vortex, a force that altered the visual heartbeat of the city one clandestine mural at a time.
This evening, Elara's target was the stark wall of an ancient library nestled against the backdrop of Luminaera’s newest quantum data center. With a spray can as her wand and the wall as her spellbook, she conjured color and chaos, abstract lines that distilled the essence of Luminaera's duality; tradition meeting innovation, nature colliding with technology, whispers of ancient tales flowing into streams of cybernetic consciousness.
As the night deepened, her artwork came alive, pulsing with an energy that echoed the very lifeblood of Luminaera. It was not just a mural but a portal of sorts, a window that granted passerby a glimpse into the city’s multifaceted soul.
By morning, Elara vanished into the city's heart, leaving behind her latest masterpiece—a constellation of colors and forms that captivated and confounded. She was the spirit of Luminaera itself; a spectral artist bridging old worlds and new, night and day, in the dance of shadows and light.
And as the city awoke to the gift that graced its ancient walls, somewhere in the tangled alleyways, Elara smiled, her eyes filled with the hues of her next dream, the next corner of Luminaera to be touched by her unseen brush.
Luminaera whispered its thanks through the leaves of its urban gardens and breathed a sigh of contentment as art merged with life in a ceaseless embrace. Mira
In the bustling metropolis of Luminaera, where the ancient cobblestones met with the sleek glass of the aspirant tech giants, there roamed a girl whose eyes held a story as enigmatic as the city itself. Let's call her Mira - a burst of life and color against the chrome and neon backdrop, with hair that danced like the shadows at dusk and a jacket that told tales in vivid patches and stitches.
She strolled through the Verve District, where the scent of seawater mingled with the sizzle of street food, her hoodie adorned with animated characters that seemed to echo her every mood. These characters weren't just decor; they represented the subculture of Luminaera - a testament to the fusion of simplicity and the digital age, a soft imprint of nostalgia on the ever-forward march of progress.
Mira's eyes twinkled with mischief as she paused by a street performer, a robot that painted portraits with strokes that could outmatch the sea's own rhythm. With a deft hand, she dropped a token into the collection hat, a silent pact of appreciation for art in all its forms.
It was at that moment, between the serenity of the waves crashing against the harbor walls and the cacophony of a city that never truly sleeps, that she felt a familiar vibration from her pocket. A message from an old friend: "Meet me at The Crux. It's time." The Crux, an antiquated arcade that clung to the heartstrings of Luminaera's youth, was a harbor for dreamers and a haven for those seeking solace from the gleam of too much future too fast.
With a soft sigh that spoke volumes of the stories locked within her, Mira turned on her heel, her shoes lighting up with each step - a personal constellation guiding her to the next chapter of her adventure. As she ventured towards The Crux, each step seemed to echo with the heartbeat of Luminaera itself - a symphony of old and new, of memories cherished and moments yet to be seized.
And there, beneath the jumble of neon signs and the glow of vintage arcade machines, Mira found her friend, her co-conspirator in a world teetering on the edge of tomorrow. Together, they stood as the avatars of a city that taught them what it means to be vibrant, to be alive - Luminaera, the jewel by the sea, where every street could tell a different story, and every face held a new world within their gaze.
Echo
In the sprawling, neon-drenched alleyways of Luminaera, where the whisper of the future races through the cobblestones underfoot, I met a girl with auburn-laced tendrils and eyes holding centuries worth of wisdom.
She was an enigma, a fusion of the city's dichotomy. Her hoodie, a relic of old-world comfort, contrasted sharply against the holographic graffiti tags that adorned the ancient brick walls. On her chest, two whimsical creatures danced, seeming out of step with the palpable rush of technology around us—yet fitting perfectly with the serene calm she exuded.
They called her Echo, for her presence reverberated through the streets like the soft hum of the tide against Luminaera's glittering shores. Some say she descended from the great clock tower at the heart of the city, a guardian to the whispered secrets and unspoken dreams of those who tread these gleaming paths.
Despite the constant thrum of life—drones above us mapping constellations, AI artists painting stories in the air—Echo moved with a grace that seemed to slow time itself, beguiling and tranquil. I followed her through a labyrinth where old met new; steam rose from vendor carts selling traditional recipes next to a cafe crafting beverages from distilled starlight.
The story of the day unfolded without words, as if we were characters in a silent film scored only by the heartbeat of the city. She led me to a garden hidden between skyscrapers, a verdant escape where mechanical birds sang ancient songs, and luminescent flowers swayed to an unseen breeze.
As dusk settled, the city transforming before our eyes, Echo turned, offering a small smile that promised tales of adventure. In the midst of this ever-changing city, somehow, it was her—the girl with the soulful gaze and the hoodie of solitude—who seemed the most out of time and yet the most at home.
And as quickly as she appeared, melting back into the shadows between the old and new, she left an imprint, a reminder that even in a city reaching for tomorrow, there are timeless stories waiting to be told.

Audrey Spencer ⚡ she/her
creative :: dance machine :: self-absorbed
this woman sees the world through rose-tinted glasses -- literally. just as passionate about timeless classics as she is about new trends, Audrey Spencer spends most of her time writing columns for a niche fashion magazine dedicated to the marriage of vintage and modern. but her true dreams lie in spreading her own fashion gospel; if only she could get enough Simstagram followers.
upon stumbling across a book of vampire lore, Audrey became intrigued with the concept of the undead. what a perfect union of the old and the new! how wonderfully timeless! she's never met a real vampire before, but she knows that when she does...she'd love to style them.
i wanted to try making a sim for @moonhze because i LOVE trying to make my sims fit in with other people's styles, and becca has such a lovely sim style, anyway. i had a lot of fun with this!! i hope you (and eden) like her :')
