This is one of the questions that I get a lot from non-Chinese speakers, and it’s perfectly understandable: How can one write Chinese characters with Latin alphabet? If you study Chinese, you probably know that it’s done with Pinyin(拼音)—the romanization system for standard Chinese in Mainland China.
The Pinyin movement is one of the core movements of the modernisation of the Chinese language. The system we use today was created by Chinese linguists in the 1950s, including Zhou Youguang (周有光), often referred to as "the father of pinyin”, although Zhou preferred calling himself “the son of pinyin” instead because his studies are based on several existing systems.
In the past, it took a person two years to learn and recognize thousands of Chinese characters before he or she could start reading and writing. As a result, only rich and powerful people can afford to be educated, while the mass majority remains illiterate. The Pinyin system greatly simplifies the learning process and raise the educational level of the Chinese population. In the information age, Pinyin also facilitates entering characters on standard keyboards such as QWERTY. Pinyin, in a way, has saved Chinese characters in the modern world. #hanyupinyin #pinyin #learnchinese #chinesehistory #modernchinese #romanization #sliceoflife #tinyeyescomics https://www.instagram.com/p/CCGY0hrqmON/?igshid=1hxk5crfl19j

Squid, prawn with pineapple salsa, gooseberries, cucumber and gold foil; first course of our aud200pp six courses dinner at Andly Private Kitchen @andly_private_kitchen , West Leederville. So good. The texture of the squid and prawn was incredible - it was like a sausage which was firm and springy. Paired with tangy pineapple salsa, pickled gooseberries and cucumber. Perfect appetising starter to our dinner celebrating @thisisangelang - booked this and requested for all seafood dishes coz we are all seafood lovers and Chef @liyuekuan does seafood dishes really well. 😋🤤 #AndlyPrivateKitchen #WestLeederville #Squid #Prawn #Seafood #PerthFood #FineDining #ModernChinese #Chinese #PerthChinese #PerthFoodReview #PFR_Chinese #PFR_FineDining #PFR_AndlyPrivateKitchen (at Andly Private Kitchen) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeWBZ5Rv81A/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

What's your dim sum order? I'm always on the lookout for great dim sum and I was totally influenced by @prowlergram posting about @dimsumandduck. So Win and I got our butts down to King Cross to enjoy dim sum in the sun. I am totally converted now! I don't need to go all the way down to Chinatown when the craving hits. We tried so many different ones, then doubled down on the ones we liked best. The prawn ones were sensational, with whole prawns in them. For Win, this right here is the star: pork xiaolongbao (or pork Shanghai dumplings, as it is in the menu). They’re traditional Shanghai soup dumplings and, when done right, they're pretty special. And you better believe that they're done right here. What do you usually order when you're having dim sum? 🥟 #dimsum #xiaolongbao #londonrestaurants • • • • • • • #shanghaifood #londonfood #londoneats #londonrestaurants #londonfoodscene #foodiechats #porkdumplings #chinesecuisine #chinese #streetfood #dimsumlover #dumplingsfordays #dumplings #chinesefood #dumpling #modernchinese #asianfood #soupdumpling #gyoza #dimsumtime #foodphotography #dimsums #londonfoodguide (at King's Cross) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPqHO8bFtIF/?utm_medium=tumblr

Did you know that Peonies are native to China? They are highly valued there, and are often referred to as the “king of flowers”. They were the national flower prior to 1929, when they were replaced by the plum tree. Peonies have been popular in China since the Sui dynasty. During the Sui and Tang dynasties they were planted at the Imperial Palace. Because of this, peony symbolism also includes nobility, honor, and wealth. #peonies #shèhongkong #centerpieces #lanecrawford #hkdining #modernchinese #cocktaillounge (at SHÈ) https://www.instagram.com/p/Br2P9XWHcY5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=4mgwz65dwh1y

Qingnian Wenzhai magazine 青年文摘
The Qingnian Wenzhai magazine (Youth digest) is available at almost every small kiosk in the People’s Republic Of China.
Since we have a lot of access to the classical literature and stories through many different sources, I want to introduce you a medium which is almost forgotten by the youth of modern society.
But not in China: magazines and newspapers are still very popular, with the exception that they won more readers on digital platforms informing theirselves about what’s going on. So let’s try it by ourselves as well! If you visit the PRC I would suggest you to grab a copy of the youth digest and pick out an essay on your own.
Many students of the Chinese language fear to start reading what natives are reading. Often they claim that their vocabulary is lacking many words so they have to study more.
My recommendation: use what you already have, it will be enough.
New Chinese characters can be jumped over or better: read them as you would know the meaning, even if you vaguely have in mind what it might sound like, go for it! It will be of great benefit. Otherwise use Pleco if you look up important words and phrases.
I hope you will enjoy it 🙂
Title of the text: 重要的是内心的诗意
