Pokemon Horizons Episode 58 Review - The Kingambit At Anything Eatery

Did you know that the events of this episode was foreshadowed way back in Episode 21? There was a scene where Friede mentioned that he once went to a restaurant and had his appetite spoiled because of a marital spat he heard in the kitchen. This episode had one of the restaurant owners, Nandi, mention that “the adventurer guy” hasn’t stopped by their restaurant recently and the owners are a couple who argue constantly. There’s only one character I know that looks as if he’s dressed to go on an adventure and that’s Friede. I like how they added in continuity from a very obscure piece of dialogue, which shows how detail oriented Horizons can be.

This episode is actually really good development for Dot! She’s usually so shy and awkward around people, but she’s actually being assertive and talkative here! She gives constructive criticism on how the couple should serve the food in the restaurant and even uses the opportunity to lure in people using her Quaxly, where it be from him acting cute or using him for a Pokemon battle against Sidian. I do like that Dot even does worry about butting in and being intrusive for the business but Mokichi doesn’t seem to mind the help. Her experience with live-streaming helped with constructive feedback!

I like how Medali being a gourmet hub in-game is carried over to the anime! A lot of restaurants are shown and even Treasure Eatery is mentioned! Because of there being so many restaurants, competition is high. That was why Anything Eatery was getting very little customers to the point that they resorted to ruining their signature udon with so many unnecessary toppings. It shows how competition can change a business.

I think Kingambit was very funny in this episode. It just wants to help out in the restaurant and make udon but it’s terrible with customer service. It’s pretty much a parody of the ‘looks like a scary guy, but is actually very sweet’ trope seen in anime! While making udon is its specialty, I do think it was a wasted opportunity for the episode to not focus on making people learn that Kingambit is a huge softie underneath its scary appearance, but since the episode is about a restaurant, taste is king.

Also, I do like how it’s not Coral, but Sidian with a food-related struggle this time around. Coral has been seen throwing tantrums over sweets while Sidian does seem as if he gets a little irritated when famished. He’s usually calm and composed, so for him to misunderstand a simple bump on the legs as a challenge felt a little out of character, but it still feels understandable because people do the craziest things when they’re hungry. I also liked seeing a sillier side to Sidian! At least he enjoyed the food at the end!

Larry showing up at the end was a nice little detail. Nandy said that other than the adventurer guy not showing up, they also have a bone-tired salaryman coming by every now and then. Larry is a tired as heck salaryman, so the description fits. He seemed to enjoy how simple the noodles are and even said that simple is best, referencing his preference for the Normal type. I honestly can’t wait for the battle with Dot and Larry…which will be in two weeks.

Yes, there is a break next week, meaning that the awaited Dot vs Larry battle will have to wait in two weeks. Judging from the previews, it’s finally time for Quaxly to evolve! Waiting two weeks is going to be arduous! What are your thoughts on the episode?

okay okay okay okay. here are my personal takes + honestly they’re right so these are, in fact, law. i also included some kengan omega characters 😉

ps. the dudes that i left out, i believe, would not be a good father/i can't see them as a father or they would likely be closer to their son(s). for example, i can't really see gaolang as a father. he's a daddy, sure, + would be a top tier husband, but as a father i think he'd be super traditional + distant from his kids. raian, on the other hand, would likely see his kids only as "weapons" in the sense he wants to make them strong, but he'd also be closer w a son if he had a kid.

tokita ohma is a girl dad. he’d be anything his daughter wants him to be + he loves her to absolute death. he’d kill for her. he’ll raise her to be the biggest girl boss in the world + he’s incredibly proud of her, no matter what she decides to do. he’s not really great at the advice + wisdom part, but he’s very comforting + supportive. 

narushima koga is a girl dad. he’s so afraid, though. he’s so afraid he’ll mess his daughter up or teach her the wrong things but his daughter loooooves him. he seriously can’t get away, not that he would want to though. they’re best friends + he adores her. would kill + die for her. also, her biggest hype man.

hatsumi sen is a girl dad. he knows how bad men can be + is suuuper protective of his little girl. he’s basically like her shadow, but not in a creepy way. if anyone messes with his daughter, they’re fucking dead. he’s also at the mercy of absolutely anything she wants. he spoils the absolute fuck outta her.

himuro ryo is a girl dad. he’s a girl dad in the way that he doesn’t really see the point of separation of the sexes + he believes that anything a guy can do, a girl can do just as well or even better. he will instill this confidence in his daughter + watch her take over the world. he’s her number one fan 🥺

jose kanzaki is a girl dad. kiind of like sekibayashi but to a much less degree. he’s the kinda girl dad that lets his daughter do absolutely whatever she wants + will back her 100%, especially if what she wants to do is in a male dominated field. he’s gonna help her bring down tHE FUCKING PATRIARCHY. 

KANOH AGITO IS A GIRL DAD. YOU CANNOT CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE. ABSOLUTELY WHATEVER HIS DAUGHTER WANTS HIM TO BE HE WILL TO THE ABSOLUTE BEST OF HIS ABILITY. Adam Dudley

Mostly public accounts with a pretty large following maybe 2-3k. I can see him having insta and tik tok, I can't see him on twitter or tumblr just because he doesn't seem like the type to enjoy reading in his free time.

He doesn't post much (he does thirst traps and they sometimes go viral) and he doesn't add many things to his story.

His following consist of mostly dudes and a few girls who he's talked to or found him cute. His feed and fyp are filled with 'alpha' motivation and humor and pretty girls. You best believe he's includes himself in petty drama in every comment section.

Akiyama Kaede

Has instagram, twitter and tumblr. They are all private and only close family and friends follow her. Her profiles are very organised and pleasing to look at. She posts rarely, when she goes out somewhere nice.

In the mini comics it's cannon that she is into shipping fictional characters, so she probably interacts with the fandoms shes in. Her feed is her friends posts, a few outfit ideas here and there and maybe news. (Idk). She's not afraid to smash the 'block' and 'not interested' button when she sees something she doesn't like, she doesn't take no bs.

Elena Robinson

VERY organised and aesthetic profiles. Has to put her accounts on private because Mokichi forced her to, so she would be 'safe from weirdos online'. She mostly posts selfies of when she goes out with her friends (karla) and on her stories she puts cute animals and nice scenery. DEFINETLY has pinterest.

You KNOW all her friends are up in her dms and comments hyping her up. (Her friends are probably just as sweet as her🥺)

Hatsumi Sen

He's not very active, he only has a few decent pictures of himself posted. Messages every woman he finds and hearts all their stories, uses sucky pick up lines like the ones he uses on Shion. (They all block him). Like Adam, he listens to alpha male podcasts.

Though most of the time he's too busy relaxing, which leaves his accounts collecting dust. He makes excuses about leaving people on delivered but we all know he's just lazy.

Himuro Ryo

Just like Hatsumi he uses pick up lines when messaging women, however he succeeds as his ones aren't cringe. Posts pictures and selfies of him doing whatever frequently and all his simps eat it up. (Also posts 'felt cute might delete later' pictures).

He's pretty popular at 6-7 ish k. He's one of those people who have a shit ton of notifications.

He threatens posting unflattering pictures of Lihito and Okubo daily.

Imai Cosmo

Follows meme pages and sends memes to Seki and Waka. Has a private spam account and a public main where he posts pictures with his family on holidays.

His feed and fyp is mostly memes with some cute animal videos sprinkled throughout. Sometimes when he sees a particularly cute video, he leaves a positive comment like 'aww your puppy is so cute🥺' .

I can see him as the type to always have airpods in his ears blasting music so loud that everyone can hear. Seki and Waka have had to remove his earphones quite a few times to get his attention.

Ajani —

He was part of the Kengan vs Purgatory tournament, same as Nicolás/Jean, he uses Jiu Jitsu, but as a side attack form. He usually goes for the punches

Along w it, he's a boxer, usually training with Jun because when he was growing up, Jun was the motive of why he become a fighter. He's a super star to him.

When Purgatory fighters could fight against Kengan ones after these two didn't become one, he and Sheila had a match: That's where he got the scar on his chest.

But they're friends!!! (Even if she kicked his ass and he returned the favor some weeks later. But they're gym friends.)

He's aside of being a DJ, is an excellent chef, he loves to be in the kitchen because is like his happy place. He loves fighting, but need a rest once in a while. Usually makes more to invite his friends, he doesnt like eating alone sometimes. That's what make him sad of being independent.

He got along (Purgatory) with: Nicolás, Liu, Naidan (BRO'S DEAD SADLY), Terashi, Rolón, Ryan (oc of @andy-kuramy ), José (Barely, he hate him just because don't think he's good enought for his bro Ryan, but don't make a huge deal out of it.)

And w the Kengan ones: Naoya, Himuro, Kaneda, Mokichi, Rei, Sen, Sheila, Saw Paing and Gaolang. (He don't talk a LOT with most of them, but he doesnt have problems with them, so, 👍)

He hates Akoya. Akoya is an asshole. (Totally not because he beat his ass)

Sheila—

She make her debut in Kengan Ashura, being part of the aniquilation tournament with the company of her deceased mother who was a member of the Kengan Association.

Defeated in second round. (Everyone was surprised that she even passed the first one)

As years passed, she wanted to be more strong and grow her experience, so she went from country to country, training with some fighter, obviously paying them for taking their time if necessary (Muteba, Jun, Gaolang and Gensai). Her lost only give her a wish to become STRONGER. Never. Giving. Up.

She created her own style, she doesnt have a name for it, she just call it "Doing what she thinks she have to do." Is a combination of gymanstics, dance and box. She's pretty fast, mini sonic.

But She's more analytic that harmeful, she preffers winning fair and square, without killing anybody.

She has nails, wich since she was 12, prepare them to be a weapon, so the 10 nails of her hands are a venenous menace. She uses especials gloves to not hurt anybody outside the ring.

When Koga arrived to CJW and saw her training, she didn't think of her much of a menace. "I don't want to hurt her." He said, one day Jun put them to a sparring session after Sheila asked him to

"Hurt me?? Who you think you are?? Jun?" She asked, Jun in that moment just laughed, as when José, just give Koga a short explanation "She's Sheila. She comes here once in a while to train when shes on the country, she wanted to see of good where you." With that, Koga just nooded "Hm. Got it."

She, for experience of the time, ended winning, while seeing him, she sighed. "And with that you think you can be like Ohma in how long?? Six months? Yeah, you're totally screwed if your mind think a work of maybe decades can be done in just that."

She's a determinant, strategic and fair person, uses a lot of logic, her overthinking is sometimes her own weaknesses, she stays daydreaming sometimes.

She's not pretty used to the fancy life she has tooked in such a short period of time. Still being weird for her. But she loves her partner.

The three accesories with she holds her hair where given by him, actually.

She gets along with (Kengan): Yamashita, Ohma, Cosmo, Gaolang, Jun, Kaneda, Muteba, Naoya, Himuro, Adam, Sayaka, Karuo, Haruo, Rei, Sen, Lisellotte (Another oc of Andy, Lis is her sister), and Raian (Barely, just because he's her brother-in-law).

Raian:

- he's not one to care about your clothes, and honestly, if you're decked out in stuff, it just means more clothes for him to rip off of you, which irritates him a bit

- he would never say anything against it though, if you're happy, he's happy

- loves dark colors, especially blacks, so he quite likes your gothic outfits

- your makeup on the other hand pisses him off

- be for real here, he loves how it looks, you're his badass bitch, but it stains, and he hates that

- also would not let you put it on him, he hates the feeling of stuff on his face, at most eyeliner but any more and he will tweak out

- if you kiss him and leave black lipstick marks on his face he will try to rub them off, but it always ends up leaving a blot of smudged black

- even worse when you rest your head on his chest/ shoulder, because that shit does NOT come off his clothes easy

- note that he likes to touch your face a lot, so some of those stains on himself are his own fault

- other than that though, he finds it's really hot and thinks you're cool as fuck, though he'll never admit it

Gaolang:

- probably found it kind of scary at first, like seeing you in the dark, decked out in gothic attire made his heart stop at least once

- he does get used to it, very slowly though

- buys makeup/accessories/clothing for you!!! (He's loaded, just let him do this)

- supports you with a burning passion, despite not really getting it at all

- he finds the contrast between you outside (decked out in goth clothing) and you at home very jarring, and kind of cute

- definitely watches you put on your makeup, and even let's you put it on him, if you request it

- no photos though (that's a lie, he's a huge softie for you, do whatever you want)

- he's a very patient man, so take all the time in the world to get ready, heck, he'll even help you choose between outfits, he just likes being included in whatever brings you joy

- probably has a sewing kit and makeup on his person at all times in case you need a little touch up

- his kisses are HELLA sloppy so he'd accidentally licking off your lipstick too

Y/n: you should see the other guy *points at saw paing who's tongue is completely black*

- when he first met you, he thought you were possessed, probably brought you to mokichi for an exorcism

- once you explain that it's a fashion choice, it finally clicks in his head

- keeps a rosary (borrowed from mokichi) on his person, just in case though (he's kidding, he just finds it funny)
