Day 1: 11 Mar 2024
Because we are both now retirees, we decided to drive to the Mornington Peninsula to meet the Worths instead of flying to Melbourne and then hiring a car. So we’ll drive down via the coast on the Princes Highway and then return via the inland road. We’ll have 3 nights of accommodation before meeting Paul and Sharon on Thursday 14/3.
Initially we also planned to take the gravel bikes with us but after Phil’s diagnosis of “shingles” a couple of weeks ago and the doctor’s order to “take it easy” we decided to leave the bikes behind. Best not to have the temptation!
Carlyles are not well known for their early starts so we left the driveway at Elanora at 7:45am with a coffee stop planned once we were past Wollongong. Gerringong was where we found ourselves for a pretty good coffee and little orange polenta cake. The cafe had big views over the coast. It’s a cute surfer township with the stunning Gerroa beach next door.
Next stop for a toastie for lunch was Mollymook … another beautiful South Coast town. We got takeaway toasties and sat down near the beach. Pretty warm with 30C showing on the temperature gauge.
Jim lent us a 12V fridge which we’ve plugged in and it works a treat. It’s cooking for us 2 x milk, yoghurt, tonight’s frozen dinner (cooked at home yesterday), a bottle of wine, and 1 beer. Tonight’s AirBnB has no kitchen apart from a microwave and it’s in North Durass which is a good 20+ min drive to Bateman’s Bay which is the closest place for dinner options. Hence our homemade dinner! Perfect!
We arrived at our destination at 2:30pm and met Victor (our host). Great place with walks, mountain biking, beaches, lakes etc all on the doorstep. Our accommodation is a granny flat at the back of Victor and Dee’s house. Two kangaroos (mum and 1 year old Joey) were chomping away on grass right outside our door.
We put walking shoes on straight away and did a short walk along the lake. Huge trees! This area was impacted badly in 2019/20 during those terrible bushfires. The bush looks like it has fully recovered. Pretty stunning area. Glad we stopped here.

Dawn, Mollymook, the Beach
Fifteen minutes before sunrise on Mollymook Beach, 300 metres north of the Golf Club, The stormy rain clouds on the horizon reflected the predawn light and I was photographing in the dark. Unfortunately, this meant a dozen images I took were all out of focus!
Tumblr media
One hundred metres down the beach, with better light I captured this image of what photographers describe as a "God Beam". The sun projects light through a narrow aperture in heavy clouds giving the impression of searchlights illuminating the ground or seas below.
Tumblr media
Blackwater Creek leads into the Ocean opposite where we were staying
Tumblr media
The Southern Headland divides Mollymook Beach from Ulladulla Harbour.
Tumblr media
Looking north along the beach towards the headland at Bannister Point.
Tumblr media
Bannister Point is the site of a well-known seafood restaurant managed by celebrity Chef Rick Stein.
Tumblr media
I love the contrast between the yellow seaweed and the black basalt boulders
Tumblr media
This timber construction of steps leading from the roadway to the surf beach is currently out of action due to the terrible wear and tear that wind and salty sea spray have on anything built by human hand. It seemed to demand a warm monochrome tone.
Tumblr media
This was the view from our balcony later in the day. Across the lawn, the pool, the road, and around Blackwater Creek onto the beach where I walked and photographed at dawn on most mornings.

Day 3 Sydney to Molymook
A delayed posting today as we’re in the outback and subject to the vagaries of satellite broadband. At least that’s what the owner of the cabins told us when we complained about the rubbish wi-fi!
We picked up our trusty steed first thing and left the big city far behind...
Tumblr media
En route, we crossed the Sea Cliff Bridge...
Tumblr media
...at which point Alan shouted ‘Wales’, which seemed a bit random, maybe practicing for the rugby I thought, then I realised that what he was actually shouting was ‘Whales!’ as in ‘Humpback’...
Tumblr media
Humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to the sub-tropical coastal waters of western and eastern Australia to give birth and mate during winter and spring.
After all that Welsh excitement, we needed a rest so we found a nice private beach called ‘Bendalong’ to spend a few hours...
Tumblr media
..and to allow Alan his first ever dip in the Pacific ocean...
Tumblr media
The beach is famous for its stingray, who frequent it for food when the fishing boats come in. However, either they had already eaten or they didn’t like the look of Yorkshire folk’s ankles, as they didn’t come out to play which was very disappointing, so we had to make do with a pelican instead...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- ‘a curious bird is the pelican, his beak can hold more than his belly can!’
I don’t know who wrote that (probably Birdsworth😀)but it’s my favourite bird poem and also very lucky insofar as I don’t know of any stingray verse.
Hmmm, maybe time to write one:
Oh stingray, oh stingray,
You giant flat fish,
Why won’t you fit inside,
My little cooking dish,
You’re such a strange shape,
No discernable tail nor head,
It’s no wonder we use haddock,
In our fish and chips, instead.
Well, after such a hectic afternoon we went to Rick Stein’s restaurant in Mollymook for dinner. I had spicy green mango salad with crispy smoked snowy mountain trout and sweet and sour dressing to start, followed by Sri Lanken Huon salmon curry, mango chutney, naan bread and pilau rice.
As I said, I’m no critic but it was far better than Josh Niland’s restaurant the other night, even if that was restaurant of the year. I give Rick my ’double delish’ award.
Tomorrow we go to Merimbula, 150 miles south and, as we intend to find a bar to go and watch England v Australia in the world cup rugby quarter final, this could be my last post!
Mollymook, 7.30am 19th October 2019
