he would hand the ice cream to katniss, only to get so worked up that he would take it from her hands and throw it without thinking. it has happened multiple times and they still keep having this problem. katniss rocks up to haymitch’s house, arms covered in melted vanilla ice cream, like “can you PLEASE contain this b- no, haymitch, he is not having a flashback, everything’s fine. but he THREW my ice cream and i got COVERED in it. the ingredients for the bakery are on back order, peeta’s leg has been bothering him, and apparently president paylor has made some decision he disagrees with again. things have been building up and he THREW my hard-earned ICE CREAM!! i just want some peace and quiet and ice cream, PLEASE just talk some sense into him”

The Hunger Games - modern au

The night Glimmer breaks up with Peeta is also the first night he’s ever taken his best friend Finnick up on his offer to go clubbing. If he’s honest, the love hadn’t been there for a long time. But there was something about his high school sweetheart (perhaps his mother’s approval?) that felt safe, habitual, and he hadn’t been prepared to let that go.

Now, faced with no reason to stay in control, he decides to go out with Finnick. He’s hoping maybe, just maybe, the alcohol will give him the courage he needs to make a move on his best friend, who he’s harbored a crush on since the minute they met. But when he spots Finnick in the VIP section locking lips with a beautiful redhead, he takes the shot that makes the world go dark.

The next morning, Peeta wakes up on a sticky floor under a couch to someone prodding him with a broomstick. After bumping his head, he looks up into the most beautiful grey eyes he’s ever seen. As he follows the scowling, striking woman to the bar for a pick-me-up, he can’t help but wonder…had all the heartbreak been worth it?

Hazelle tilts her head side to side, as if weighing the overall experience. "Thirteen was uncomfortable at times. I felt like a bumpkin refugee that needed brainwashing - or bred." Katniss raises her brow, and Hazelle recounts how men and married couples alike would approach her after learning she has four living children. She doesn't elaborate since her daughter is with them, albeit amusing herself by pivoting one of the mugs on the tabletop.

This is actually haunting me right now…

yeah... Katniss was spared from a lot of the pushiness, being underage and mentally disoriented while in D13. but someone like Hazelle, who's single and has living children - well. 😬

Each time, Peeta’s pearl is linked to the silver parachute and the spile…

What is the importance of the spile? (outside of its literal use)

I think significance could be found in a few ways. The spile was a key survival item in the arena, something that was necessary that might not be replaceable if lost, so Katniss kept it close. But why keep it close after she was in D13 and no longer needed it?

She's certainly more sentimental than she thinks she is. The spile was first given to Peeta because he'd died that day. When she first realized what the spile was it was in connection to a memory about her father. This memory calls to mind another significant memory, when her father told her that if she could find herself she'd be saved. Obviously it was meant as a joke about not starving, but symbolically it has a more vital meaning: if she can be true to herself then she is saved, spiritually. Katniss has several arcs that she goes through during the series, one of which is spiritual. By the end of the series she achieves salvation through sacrifice and had reached "paradise" (represented by the Meadow).

The spile itself is the conduit to allow them to retrieve water from the trees, the sap, which is basically the blood of a tree. I've mentioned in other posts that The Hunger Games books are thick with Christian symbolism, especially related to Jesus Christ. Blood symbolizes several things, including life, sacrifice, redemption, and atonement. The Hanging Tree is a reference to the Tree of Life, or the cross that Christ was crucified on. "Living Water" is a metaphor used to depict the spiritual sustenance and salvation that Jesus Christ offers.

Ultimately I think the author is using the spile to tell us that Katniss is still on her spiritual journey, even though we no longer have her surrounded by symbolism as she was in the first two books, just as the pearl represents Peeta and keeps him in the narrative when he's absent physically.

What’s my most self indulgent wip? Oh hands down, that’s my Outside Chance universe. Like this one could probably easily be about half as long as it currently is if I cut out what’s not super essential to the plot/character development/themes, but watch me shoving those scenes in anyways because I wanna, or writing the same scene from five different character’s povs because I freaking can and nobody can stop me, like you all have no idea how much unshared just… stuff there is for this world and now I’m probably in trouble for even saying that, and oh look!!! In TAD I’m intrigued by the Hazelle/Mr. Mellark and Mrs. Everdeen/Haymitch reassignments. Can you tell us anything about those dynamics?

In TAD Hazelle is a strong and very pragmatic woman and she's gets on well with Mr. Mellark. She made the best of the situation, which to her was a vast improvement. His boys are reluctant, but eventually glad to have a non toxic mother figure, while all of the younger Hawthorne kids are glad to be around a quiet kind man that lets them sneak cookies. Gale takes the longest to come around, because he'd taken on so much responsibility, it was difficult to come to terms with his sudden change in status as far as decision making for his family goes. Hazelle and Mr. Mellark have three daughters and she's pregnant with their third child.

Mrs. Everdeen was very very unhappy when she discovered she was being forced to remarry. Haymitch was pissed about the whole thing but he knew his status as a Victor wasn't going to prevent him from getting strung up, so he kept his mouth shut. He moved down to the cellar (and nicer newer celler than Peeta's ramshackle of a place) to make sure he never accidentally stabbed one of the girls waking from a nightmare. He hated being down in the dark, even though there were some small windows, which was what prompted him to acquire the apothecary for his wife, so that strangers weren't coming to his house and so he could sleep in the sunshine. He gave up drinking while there were there, with the help of Mrs. Everdeen and her vast knowledge of herbs to get him though. Once they were gone he stopped taking care of himself again, till wee Rowan was born. Then he wanted to quit. He still slips sometimes, but never around his family.

Hi @mollywog - thanks for the ask! Sorry for the delay, we've been traveling a lot this summer and was waiting to get back to my computer. Hope you're having a good summer! As for my answer, I'm not sure…I think I bit off more than I can chew. It was actually an idea I had a year ago when Prompts in Panem was coming up. It was an "accidental" marriage fic in D12 after the war, but there were going to be flashbacks to their time in D13 (they're non-reaped in it). I barely made a dent. So then when the D13 prompt came up I thought maybe I could do a stand alone of their time in 13 and then expand it later if it was working for me. I did make more progress this time than on PiP, but I couldn't get it finished, and I'm not super happy with what I did write. I think I probably need to write some drabbles/one shots first to get more practice without feeling overwhelmed.

Your Wild Wednesdays (I need to catch up on the latest chapter!) actually reminded me I had a babysitter drabble I started a while ago, so I'm going to try and finish that. My new goal: write and post one drabble before the end of the year 🤣
