Pretty boy used to be A Face that would come up in his mind when he thought of the term. There was no specifics in mind, just like. Pretty Boy. Pretty boy! You say that and theres like a Face Template that shows up in ur minds eye and hed just attribute that to any dude who was like Vaguely Pretty. But now its Akira 😭 and he finds himself cataloging things that Akira does that he KNOWS he finds cute when girls do it. The hairtuck behind the ears. The headtilt when he mishears a question. The Actually Pretty Doe Eyes. The breathy, nearly inaudible chuckle he does in place of a Real laugh (thats made better by the fact that its so hard to get him to laugh in the first place). He likes cute snacks. He blushes easily. Ryuji is sitting here like ‘theres no fucking way man. Like theres just no way. It drives him insane bc like he did Not see any of these things as like inherently girly or whatever. Like thats just akira thats just his bro! And he does OTHER weird shit that cancels all that shit out. Hes like a messy engineer/tinkerer, he rolls out of bed and whatever situation his hair is is everyones problem. He wears that AWFUL gym uniform and doesnt tweak it AT ALL?? He likes baseball?? hes got a whole binder of trading cards that he will show off if u show any moment of weakness. Like hes just Some Dude but also manages to be Some Girl at the same time and Ryuji is like thats not fair. Life sucked ass but at least it made sense before Akira stumbled into it 😭

rod makes me so so insane even all these years later. logan who believes the lie that he’s more cutthroat than he is, lying to himself that he’d cut and run when it was time, only to cling to scraps of affection. mona who doesnt carry the same defensiveness about trust that colt and logan do, who refused to let herself be tied down, taking the fall for a pretty girl once more, finally finding someone worth trusting. colt watching his father burn up and wish only that his son escapes a life he never knew any differently from, only for his death to solidify colt’s reclamation of it.

ok ok ok something that's been on my mind about Ai Di and Chen Yi & the conflicted feelings everyone (myself included) seems to have around them hooking up

obviously Ai Di taking advantage of drunk Chen Yi is bad. Chen Yi was clearly super out of it, and even if he did eventually recognize that it was Ai Di in front of him, he was still not in the right state of mind to be sleeping with someone

it feels weird to even put a 'but' after a statement like that, but honestly, the context is so important. there's a big difference between, say, a sober person irl taking advantage of their drunk heartbroken friend under normal circumstances, and a feral gang member who has literally run people over for the hell of it taking advantage of his crush who is also a gang member and has flung himself at feral gang member (twice now) even though he's supposedly in love with their boss who is also a father figure to both of them.

like... it's almost impossible to view this situation through a "normal" lens lmao. also, most people irl are not in a situation where running away from your guilt entails going to literal prison for four years

so yeah, what Ai Di did was fucked up, real world or fictional, but I think it's okay to not bend over backwards trying to justify his actions when the context is so far beyond what is "normal" circumstances

but can we talk about the fact that the boys have to live out the rest of their lives. like we dont see it but they have to go through every. single. part. of grief. forever.

neil didnt even make it to christmas, they have to go to a school for months that is filled to the brim with reminders that the most important people theyve ever met will never be there again. their uniforms, their dorms, hell even the one thing they rely on for the strength to keep going is a reminder.

for at LEAST the next year, everything will always come back to neil, to charlie, to keating, to the dead poets society.

and the worst reminder of all? the fact that itll all, at least for the foreseeable future, be for nothing. a life lost, a student expelled, a career ruined, yet everything will seemingly go back to normal. every student and staff member will go back to their respective places and live as welton expects them to.

not the poets, theyre still sat in the auditorium waiting for their puck to come back from behind the curtain. parts of them will stay there forever, hoping they get an encore, until they eventually join neil on stage.
