I’m trying to start reading gothic literature, but I don’t really know where to start. What books in the genre would you recommend?
Cracks knuckles.
Start off with a selection of Edgar Allan Poe short stories. There's a reason he's considered the best Gothic writer. Most if not all of his fiction falls squarely into the gothic genre, even his non-horror production. The more you read the better, but The Fall of the House of Usher is one of the best representatives of the Gothic you can find. Also check out his poetry and scientific essays, if you can, the guy was a real Renaissance man. He also wrote one novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, which, along with Lovecraft's In the Mountains of Madness and Cambell's Who goes there? aka The Thing From Another World constitutes some sort of "trilogy" (since each story was based on the one prior).
Then you can move on to other short story selections. Short stories are easier to read and digest, I think, and plenty of fun. I recommend the following authors:
J. Sheridan Le Fanu- Irish writer that took a page from Irish folklore and legends. Madam Crowl's Ghost is a favorite of mine.
R. Louis Stevenson- usually a children's author, Stevenson liked to merge genres and used pretty interesting concepts for his horror production.
Guy de Maupassant- he was commisioned to write, so he often recycled entire concepts and plots, leaving us with many different versions of the same story (and a lot of heavy-handed morals. god bless).
Charles Dickens- predictably enough, he specialized in ghost stories
M. R. James- James' short horror stories have some of the most interesting monster concepts I've ever read, from a haunted dollhouse that recreates the events of a real-life haunting, to a possessed pattern print.
Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer- little man puts the "Dark Romanticism" in, well, Dark Romanticism. If you know Spanish, do yourself a favor and read his short stories untranslated.
Elizabeth Gaskell- wrote plenty of good horror stories, and often from a female perspective, which is always a treat.
Bram Stoker- his stuff is very hit or miss, but when he hits, he hits hard. Read The Judge's House for a very nasty ghost story and then toss Stoker into the garbage because everything else he wrote is either comically racist or just dumb.
And now as for specific must-read short stories:
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman- maybe the true monster was medical misogyny all along! (Obvious content warning for graphic medical abuse, misogyny, and domestic abuse.)
What was it? by Fritz O'Brien- short story in the vein of "hey wouldnt it be fucked up if this happened?" Don't read if you have sleep paralysis.
The Open Door by Margaret Oliphant- a missing child, a mysterious door, and forces beyond human comprehension.
The Empty House by Algernon Blackwood- would you spend a full night in a haunted house? (Very paranoia inducing, it's such a treat.)
The Ghostly Rental by Henry James- in which the "ghosts" aren't actually ghosts, but something far, far weirder and cooler.
The Monkey's Paw by W. W. Jacobs- this tear-wrenching and suspenseful little tale will forever remind you to be careful what you wish for...
The gothic literature "classics", as in, full lenght novels and short novellas, can be a bit difficult to read due to length. My personal recommendations are:
Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley- a foundational text of science fiction with a nestled narrative frame and themes of personal and social responsability, bodily autonomy, and freedom. Young alchemist Victor Frankenstein attempts to blur the line between life and death, and unwittlingly sets off his downfall in the process by creating a humanoid creature he can't control and won't respond to. CW child death, death by axphysiation, incest, description of unsanitary environments.
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by R. Louis Stevenson- it is considered the first modern psychological horror story, and, while it's a mere sixty pages long, each and every one of them is packed with a dark revelation about tight-laced Victorian society. When his lifelong friend writes up a suspicious will leaving everything to a stranger, a lawyer decides to look into it, leading him down a spiral of discoveries all related to a disturbing experiment. CW suicide, graphic descriptions of violence, drug abuse.
Carmilla by J. Sheridan le Fanu- very much a classic vampire tale, with an interesting sapphic spin, in which the predatory lesbian trope bleeds, pun intended, into a twisted love story. Laura is a young girl who considers herself prim and proper, until the day the charming Carmilla stops by the family manor claiming to be her soulmate, sparking off a romance marked by a series of strange events. CW implied sexual assault, gore.
The Portrait of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde- I consider it an early attempt at daylight horror, and while the plot is mostly romantic drama (canonically bisexual romantic drama!), the descriptions make everything else worthwhile. Beautiful model Dorian Gray's life is changed when he befriends a cunning aristocrat, which prompts him to wish to remain young forever while his portrait ages in his place... and his wish is granted. CW extreme antisemitism, suicide, graphic descriptions of gore and violence.
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James- a ghostly classic which is marked by its ambiguity and the opacity of its plot, all which make it all the more disturbing, if a little hard to follow at times. Bly Manor has appointed a new nanny to take care of a pair of twins, but soon enough, she finds out not all is well in the house, and a dark force might be preying on the children. CW implied incest, implied child abuse.
The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen- technically an example of very early cosmic horror, sitting at the intersection between Poe and Lovecraft, and clearly influenced by late Victorian scientific advancements. Some particularly gruesome deaths lead a group of men to slowly uncover the past of a one Helen Vaughan, and nature of a procedure performed on her mother before her conception. CW implied child abuse, suicide, sexual harrassment, human experimentation, extreme intersexism.
And those would be it!

in the last three-ish days I've seen three movies, two were very very good and one was underwhelming:
the element of magical realism truly elevated the film and I thought it was fabulously rendered... it occurred to me earlier today that they literally open with showing Lou being willing to get her hands dirty. like oh my gosh that is just good writing. ugh. love. Ed Harris was so damn good in this role and I thought kstew knocked it out of the park. she was still very much herself in this role (as I think she often is, lol) but it played to her strengths and she pulled out some GREAT humor in a dark script. that being said it's such a dark story that I don't know how rewatchable it is? Like I really appreciated it as an art piece about cycles of violence and if we can escape them, but it's definitely a viscerally upsetting film lol. alas I am a little baby about some things and that does include gore and violence, which this movie wielded well as a narrative tool. Also Katy O'Brien...... what a casting. Again, they chose the right people for this movie.
I think my favorite is ultimately love lies bleeding because I was so impressed by the story and the cinematography. (That shot they kept showing of the gym with the town in the background at night... it was like a painting. There was SUCH an excellent sense of Place kn this film, and i love a good sense of Place).
a VERY VERY close second (and I think the more rewatachable film, honestly) was monkey man. I just got out of the theater so I haven't gotten all my thoughts straight yet but whaaaaat a strong directorial debut from dev... he was wonderful in his role and I was stunned by all the gorgeous visuals. I would love to know more about how this is a commentary on the current politics in India (I've read a post or tweet here and there) so I'm going to go find some articles when I get home, but I definitely will be watching this again. I thought it could have used tighter and more directed editing or writing around the middle - as soon as kid got to the temple I think the plot became a little muddled as we got his full backstory, and I do think we could have gotten a tighter or more... explicit(?) recovery journey/Finding His Purpose moment. But I think the hijra of the temple were so charming and the cinematography so beautiful that I'm willing to forgive some clunky plotting and exposition, you know? no movie needs to be perfect to be VERY good.
also my GOD the fight scenes were so visceral. once again I am a huge baby and was flinching so many times during the movie lol but I was totally sucked into the action. I was slapping my hand over my mouth several times lol.
one more mention of the sheer beauty of this film... the hijras' skirts spinning in that second to last fight were sooooo lovely and just spoke to great art direction. Will definitely watch again, and can't wait to do so with more information about the inspiration/parallels being drawn here.
My loser of the movie marathon was challengers:/ which toooo be fair it was the movie I watched LEAST closely (I was watching it at home on my computer, mostly because I wanted to see the scene with the knee injury since I saw the animatronic/fake Zendaya body they made to shoot the scene).
anyways, I wasn't in love with the cinematography nor the plot. It just wasn't my speed, and while I think Zendaya can play a haughty mean woman very well, I was... not very captured by the twisted tale of these three characters. Wasn't for me, alas.

Am I the only one who's tired of the "Sly is afraid of everything but gets over his fears and does the job so therefore he is brave and interesting" bullshit? There's no actual character development for him. He's just there. Season 4 was setting up some internal conflict for him, but it got canceled. So i decided to write a list of all the internal conflict for the characters.
Sylvester Dodd
His desire is to be seen as a strong, brave man, and have people take him seriously. We see that desire when he sees his own obituary, and how brief it was. In the S3 finale, we see him writing an account of what happened on the island, and uploading it online, only to find out in the S4 finale that he's been writing and uploading false accounts of the Scorpion cases for years where he does the things Walter does. He is doing everything from Alderman to Lawyer, winning gaming tournaments and becoming chess grandmaster in his youth, and risking his life at Scorpion so that he would be seen that way, and be able to see himself that way.
His fear is of living in shame. We find out how that fear sparked in S1E10 "Talismans" when he tells Megan that his parents were frustrated by the way he was, so they sent him off to his aunt's house. His father was out on missions because he didn't want to be around him. He was constantly humiliated throughout school as a child, and he has had a lot of shameful moments in the show. From S2E19 "Ticker" where he drops the bowl because of a monkey and almost messes up the mission, to S3E14 "Sharknerdo" with the pictues of him in a wizard costume reaching Denmark, to S3E19 "Monkey see, monkey poop" where he sits out on the mission due to his fear of monkeys, and has a psychosomatic reaction due to shame and guilt. In S3E17 "Dirt seeds done cheap", we see the worst fears of the team, Happy is being rejected, Cabe is weakness and Sly is just ... chickens? No, it's deeper than that. In his childhood, a bully locked him in a zoo cage with chickens while all his class laughed it him. It was the most shameful moment him his life. In that episode, he experiences that same situation, that same shamefulness. Sly's biggest fear is living in shame and people being ashamed of him and not taking him seriously. All his phobias keep people from taking him seriously like he wants, and puts him in shameful situations for his age and status. I hate the writers for not focusing on it.
Walter O'brien
His desire is to be loved for who he is. We see that when he dates Linda. Toby tells him about the damsel effect, and he says that she likes him for him, only to find out Toby was right. Then When Tim dates Paige, he tries to become normal so that Paige would want him. If he's not gonna be loved for who he is, then he would pretend to be someone else. Then in S4, we see him continuing to do that.
His fear is of that same love. Every single time he has ever connected with someone, it always ended in pain for him. From Cabe to Megan and his parents, and Linda and who knows how many other attempts. In the S3 finale when Paige asks Walter how he feels about their relationship, he says he feels sick to his stomache. He is hopeful, but terrified. In the S4 finale, they prove him right.
His second desire is to save as many lives as possible. He wants to make up for the lives that were lost in Baghdad when he was a child, and he's willing to do anything for it, even if it costs him his life.
His second fear is of people dying because of him like in Baghdad. Whenever that happens like in S2E6 "Tech, drugs, rock and roll" he goes suicidal to save the people in danger. It's honestly so impressive that a character that was treated like a joke for the better part of the show still managed to be interesting.
Happy Quinn
Her desire is to have a family and experience stability, security and happiness. She grew up moving from foster home to orphanage and back. When she marries Toby, she starts spending time with Walter, Paige and Ralph as a family instead of Toby because she longs for the childhood that she didn't have. Later she tries to have a baby with Toby before they decide to adopt.
Her fear is of being rejected and alone. Her own father left her at St.Luke's when she was 2. She was the odd one out in the orphanage and no one would adopt her, while all the other kids were adopted. When she grew up, she was constantly on the move because she couldn't provide a stable life for herself. Until Walter came and did just that for her.
Toby Curtis
His desire is to prove that he is worthwhile, and gain the approval of others. We see this desire in S1E4 "Shorthanded" when Toby almost messes up the mission because he wants Walter's approval. And he keeps seeking Walter's approval until S2E6 "Tech, drugs, rock and roll" when Walter drains the oxygen from the room Toby is in, he faints, and when he wakes up, he comes to believe that Walter truly doesn't care about him. He starts seeking Happy's approval along with her heart he's been already seeking. Until he marries her in S3, by which time he starts trying to grant all her wishes to prove his worthwhile.
His fear is of being worthless. We find out how that fear sparked in S1E10 "Talisman" when he tells Happy about his past. He had a clinically bipolar mother and his neglective and unloving dad struggled to manage her illness. He became a doctor to help them both and failed, resulting in his crippling guilt and self-worth issues. Those issues are beneath the surface, seen in his little interactions with Walter and Happy across the seasons. Especially in S4 when he finds out about his sperm conditions and those fears resurface again.
Paige Dineen
We really don't see much internal conflict with her aside from the fact that she fears abandonment because her mother and Drew abandoned her. Which is probably the reason her character is so uninteresting and one of the many reasons Waige falls short to Quintis.
Cabe Gallo
There are two main internal conflicts with him over the course of the show. Season one has his internal conflict over the secret of Baghdad and how Walter would react to it. Season 3 had internal conflict with him wanting to find love again, and his fear of weakness.
Ralph Dineen
He's just there.

Reviewing every Dinosaur movie ever: #4 The Dinosaur and the Missing Link; A Prehistoric Tragedy
Tumblr media
RELEASE DATE: 1917
SYNOPSIS: A group of cavemen join together to have dinner in their quaint summer cave before their meal is ruined by Wild Willie, an ape-man they call the missing link, who drinks up all their noodles. After chasing him off, the cavemen go out to hunt for new prey, all failing spectacularly in the process. The young caveboy, fishing in a kayak, witnesses Wild Willie attempt to wrestle and ride a sauropod until the dinosaur ultimately kills him. The caveboy stands over the ape’s corpse as the rest of the party arrive, gladly claiming it was he that killed Willie, as the other cavemen celebrate.
THOUGHTS: This short and simple film has its charm with the crude stop-motion animation and the humor of cavemen acting like middle class gentlemen with their “reading rooms” being open caves and apologizing for the lack of tea given it hasn’t been discovered yet. What really makes this special though is who made it, none other than Willis O'Brien, one of the most important people in film history. This is, in fact, his very first film and the start of his love for dinosaurs and monstrous monkeys.
Tumblr media
The title is arguably the best joke in this comedy, the dinosaur appears for only a short minute and the missing link is not meant to be sympathetic, so there isn’t any actual tragedy here. The humor is good enough to get a sensible chuckle and the art is endearing enough to keep your attention. It’s free on Wikipedia and only about 6 minutes long, so check it out and take a look at some of the earliest work of a giant of cinema.
RATING: 5/10

A Journey Through My Recent History
An Exercise in Self-Awareness
Tumblr media
It’s amazing how quickly time seems to fly. As I sit here trying to remember the past few weeks, it all seems like a blur. However, as 名探偵(famous detective) Conan says: "Shinjitsu wa itsumo hitotsu!"(There is always one truth.)
But I'm not a famous detective 名探偵 thingamabob... so what can I do?
Well, if there's one thing I learned from my years of wasted life watching detective stories, there is always clues lying about. Hidden truths we don't pay attention to but can guide us closer to the truth.
This morning, I found a small packet of clues showing me fragments of my recent thoughts and actions that I had completely forgotten. And with an odd moment of compulsion, I felt the strange desire to write about it today.
Meeting The Old-School Alexa
Tumblr media
So, I don’t have a slave-bot to help me remind me of the things I’ve randomly asked for or searched for throughout my days. No Alexa, or Siri, or Jarvis, or an imaginary friend named Bobbifer who I can talk to whenever I feel like. But I do have the next best thing: search history!
Yes, most of us are petrified of our search history. But not I, I have a thing called dignity! … and multiple devices. One device for things that deserve shame, and one for things that are pure of heart. So, let’s take a look at the pure one for this post, shall we?
Here’s what popped up from my cell phone when I tapped Google’s search-bar with my index finger this morning:
japanese to english
pat o'brien actor
adult happy meal
japanese onion powder
which parts of chicken for burrito
human feet short big toe
monkey feet
kraken mascot
japanese cottage laws
disneysea show fantasmic
world women's volleyball rankings
Oh man, do I remember some of these!
A Quick Re-cap Analysis
Tumblr media
So, uh… I didn’t think this far ahead about what I should write beyond examining my search history. My mind and groin has presently stumbled upon two choices: 1) end this terrible experiment immediately and pray to the gods for mercy, or 2) go into each one a little bit, then end it immediately and pray to the gods for mercy.
I’m going to go with option #2: kicking my ass and collecting the $200.
japanese to english — This search comes up for me quite a bit. I also frequent “English to Japanese” but that is often less accurate.
pat o’brien actor — One of the many books I am currently reading is called About Face, and this actor’s name came up in the book. I had no idea who he was, so I searched for it.
adult happy meal — A weird news story I saw mentioned adult happy meals, and I never heard pray tell of such a thing. I regret ever searching for this one, as it gave me less hope for America and McDonalds than I’ve felt in a long while.
japanese onion powder — I was tasked to buy onion powder at the store here in Japan and I wasn’t sure if it was going to be called “onion powder” or “tamanegi powder.” This search helped make it more confusing.
which parts of chicken for burrito — I had eaten a particularly dry piece of chicken I cooked up for myself and then wanted to know what type of meat is so succulent and moist like I’ve had in a burrito. (fyi: It’s chicken breast, supposedly)
human feet short big toe — My wife and I were sitting on the couch staring at each other’s feet and commenting on it. This was part of that search. Did you know that humans have made up three types of feet so we can label and brand each other just by the shape of our toes? It’s Greek, Roman, and Vegan. Or something like that. Didn’t really care much about it to be honest.
monkey feet — Same as above. I felt like my foot was closer to a monkey foot and my wife was closer to a human foot. I was wrong, monkey feet are weird.
kraken mascot — I’m from Seattle and love partaking in one of the last remaining generally unwoke sports: hockey. I heard that this mascot had been recently revealed. I was immediately trolled and really wish I had not looked at it, as I believe hockey is now completely woke. Thanks a lot Biden.
japanese cottage laws — Don’t ask, don’t tell.
disneysea show fantasmic — Me and the missus are going to Tokyo Disneyland next month. Our favorite show is Fantasmic. Once again, a search has broken my heart. Fantasmic is no more in Disneyland, nor by Disneysea. The Japanese have spoken. There is no imagination or dragon-slaying Mickeys ‘round these parts, ya hear?!
world women’s volleyball rankings — The World Volleyball Championship Tournament thingy happened recently (I don’t know the real title in English, I watched it in Japanese… waarudo sekai barehbaaru… something something. Whatever.) I wanted to know what Japan and the nations they were matching up against were ranked.
I watched every minute of the Japanese matches, and I must say I friggin’ loved it. I already knew about Koga, but they’ve got a lot of cool shorter than average ladies rockin’ the volleyball courts here in Japan. Hayashi and Seki are probably my two new favorite players I discovered from watching this tournament.
…Okay, this one went way too long… Most of you who have the misfortune of reading this deep into my blogposts probably don’t care at all about this topic. But, seriously, volleyball players in general are super-hot. That’s something we all can agree on. Right?
Conclusion: I Remember
Tumblr media
It sure was fun taking a stroll down memory lane. I remembered a lot of things I had forgotten I did. Especially that one Japanese volleyball lady. I mean that SEARCH for that one Japanese volleyball lady. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Anyway, I highly recommend giving it a try yourself sometime. It can be fun to see how your personal search history reflects your life over the past week or two. And you don't have to post it anywhere like I did. You can keep your history personal and for your eyes only. However you use it, just be sure to enjoy the memories that come flooding back! (And delete the memories that you don’t enjoy or don’t want XD)
---
またね
I hope these thoughts are helpful. Thank you so much for reading. I Agape-Love you all.
Until next time, God bless.

Contents of Sunlightheartstudio's Yugiowned! GX 2, Parts A and B (To the best of Kirby's memory)
Like I mentioned earlier, I'm not sure about the order of a lot of these...particularly about which skits belong to which part. (I do know that Part B had several of those weird longer anime crossover things.) It's a bit like playing the Clefairy Says minigame, except I have to remember a combination of like fifty arrows and I haven’t actually seen the blackboard in over a decade! Warnings as before: Language and sexual references.
Also: SHS posted a preview beforehand, which contained at least one clip that didn't make it into the actual video. This was one featuring O'Brien and "Where the Hood At." I think I can guess why it was cut.

NOTES
* Made well before the John Mulaney sketch existed.
** Thought it'd be worth noting that this was one of my favorite clips in the whole series. The way the facial expressions synced up with the music, the camera zooming in and out at the words "touch myself," and the fact that Weird Al's voice sounds vaguely similar to Manjoume's...hilarious!
*** Too bad "Thunder" by Imagine Dragons wasn't a thing at that time.
**** I remember thinking at the time, "But those characters DID have sex at the end of the movie! Us Valentineshippers still have hope!"
***** For the life of me, I couldn't find the source for this on Google, even though I remember all the words.
****** I wish I knew what this song was. It was pretty.
******* This was popular enough to be its own video at one point.

Horror Stories: Classic Tales from Hoffmann to Hodgson (Oxford World’s Classics), edited by Darryl Jones, paperback edition, Oxford University Press, 2018. Info: global.oup.com.
The modern horror story grew and developed across the nineteenth century, embracing categories as diverse as ghost stories, the supernatural and psychological horror, medical and scientific horror, colonial horror, and tales of the uncanny and precognition. This anthology brings together twenty-nine of the greatest horror stories of the period, from 1816 to 1912, from the British, Irish, American, and European traditions. It ranges widely across the sub-genres to encompass authors whose terror-inducing powers remain unsurpassed. The book includes stories by some of the best writers of the century -- Hoffmann, Poe, Balzac, Dickens, Hawthorne, Melville, and Zola -- as well as established genre classics from M.R. James, Arthur Machen, Bram Stoker, Algernon Blackwood, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and others. It includes rare and little-known pieces by writers such as William Maginn, Francis Marion Crawford, W.F. Harvey, and William Hope Hodgson, and shows the important role played by periodicals in popularizing the horror story. Wherever possible, stories are reprinted in their first published form, with background information about their authors and helpful, contextualizing annotation. Darryl Jones’s lively introduction discusses horror's literary evolution and its articulation of cultural preoccupations and anxieties. These are stories guaranteed to freeze the blood, revolt the senses, and keep you awake at night: prepare to be terrified!

Okay, no one’s asked, but I am well aware that I owe the world in general, @downtonabbeyandausten in particular, a doctoral thesis on Thomas. Since I can never figure out where to start and suspect I would have to rewatch the series from the beginning, taking notes the entire time, to really do a proper job of it, here’s a quick, pounded out before work overview of my favorite hedgehog-in-livery.
I’m sure there are logic holes, spelling errors, etc. I apologize in advance for that. I’m on a rather tight timeline this morning and at least the start was done before I’d had a single cup of tea.
How I feel about this character:
I've said it before, I'll say it again - there are certain characters who walk on screen or stage and immediately make me go "Oh, I'm going to like you" and that is very, very rarely wrong. In Thomas's case, they were spot on. The boy needs hugs. Lots of hugs. All the hugs. Also, he is the perfect 'Downton' character. Julian Fellows has stated that he doesn't like black and white scenarios where one person is right and the other is wrong. He prefers situations where both sides have a point and who you side with depends on who's PoV you're looking at. That's Thomas. I will not pretend that he can't be a perfect ass and that a lot of what he does is flat up nasty and wrong. However, if you look at it from his PoV, particularly from this time period where psychology has advanced a bit beyond Freud and the early behavioralists, it's pretty much all justified, all logical, and all very, very human. And it's easy to sit back and judge and say 'that was wrong' without looking further into it, but really, given his base temperament, I don't think it's at all fair or realistic to expect him to do any better and that absolutely does not make him a bad person. He's the poster child for childhood neglect, always trying to get attention through negative means, because that's generally the only time people pay attention to him. He's always fighting to find ways to get ahead, because the people who tell him things like "if you want to go forward, work hard" hire majority workers who are less capable rather than rewarding his hard work. He's a perfect example of 'you reap what you sew' not just because he tends to get his comeuppance, but because everyone around him absolutely reinforces the negative behaviors they don't like.
And he needs hugs.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Canonically? No one. The Duke of Crowborough was the first TV character I've ever spent 24 hours wanting to punch in the face and I think people who rally around him as having been used by Thomas weren't paying attention and have entirely the wrong end of the stick (seriously, look at how he treated Mary!). Pamuk was Pamuk. I did like Edward, but that one felt one sided even before I read the cut lines where Edward asked if Sybil was as pretty as she sounded. Jimmy didn't happen and he annoyed me, so I'm kinda glad about that. Sorry Thomas/Jimmy fans, but there it is.  I prefer Andy as the adopted little brother/cousin/whatever the show presented him as.
Peter Pelham, of course, had potential, except that he died before they ever met. Woops. I will count him as a romantic ship I like, though, because I like AUs where this thing happened.
My personal crack relationship, although I don't think it would ever go so far as being physical, is Thomas and Dr. Clarkson. Clarkson is one of the few characters I can see being at least a bit bi and it would explain a few things about his relationship with our cranky hedgehog.  Of course, in order for it to actually happen, even on a purely emotional level, Dr. Clarkson would have to admit "yeah, mostly like women, but there's been an exception or two" and for them both to get over the age difference, so not likely, but I do like the dynamic.
Also, one bit of personal psychology that I could not begin to explain if my life depended on it is my brain's insistence on trying to get him and Lady Mary in bed. Not 'straightening him out' mind. Not even doing that a little. But the idea of them sleeping together makes my muse giggle like a monkey on nitrous oxide and I Do. Not. Know. Why.
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
If Thomas is the perfect "Downton" character, then Thomas and Baxter are the perfect "Downton" relationship. They both do things right, they both do things wrong, and either way, they are, from their own perspectives, completely justified in their behavior. Now, this could go terribly (I mean, worse than it did) and would have if Baxter weren't such a wonderful person, but she is a wonderful person, so it actually winds up being very rewarding to watch.
Of course, most people I've seen explore this relationship do it from Baxter's PoV, which is not surprising. It's a bit more accessible than Thomas's and involves more admirable traits. I mean, it takes a pretty good person to be persistently nice and caring to someone who is trying to strong arm you into doing something you're super uncomfortable with and threatening your job. However, she wouldn't have been there if it weren't for him, because they had a deal: he would put his job on the line by lying to his employer to get her the position if she would replace O'Brien in his life and get him the knowledge he needed to feel as powerful as everyone else in the house. Once she got there and got her side of the bargain, she suddenly started trying to back out of her side of things. I don't care who you are, feeling used like that isn't nice, and Thomas is continually - in large and small ways - feeling taken advantage of, so it got a particularly nasty response (And his PoV on the subject is black and white enough on the subject that the fact she was simply trying to find other ways to support him didn't matter, even though it is, of course, one of her admirable points). When he started threatening her job, it wasn't because he wanted to get her sacked, it was because he wanted her to go back to doing what she promised and he didn't know any other way to accomplish that. After all, the main motivators people had used on him were uneven power dynamics, bullying, and threats. That was seriously all he knew how to do. And then, when he finally reached the end of his rope on the subject and made good on those threats, he discovered she'd gone so far as to try and preserve her job by costing him his - nice payback for his getting her hired to begin with.
And while there are people who will automatically respond to that by jumping in, once again, with Baxter's PoV, for me the fact that she's the one - ultimately - who burnt that bridge is super important to her character and one of the things that made her so strong and wonderful and good, because unlike the rest of the cast who would have made excuses for why they were perfectly in the right and he was nasty and deserved it, she, being Baxter, took absolute responsibility for her actions, acknowledged that while he had been upsetting her, she had hurt him, and by gum, no matter how much he objected, she was going to rebuild that bridge or die trying.  She did not insist that Thomas was doing a one man tango where his actions negatively affected those around him and needed to be altered, but the view point and actions of the rest of the world had no real affect on his happiness or behavior. She was not treating him well because she wanted to convince herself that she was a better person and more capable of goodness than he was. She was nice because she was a genuinely nice, caring person who acknowledged that she'd not handled things perfectly and wanted to make things right again.
In the end, this resulted in probably the healthiest, most supportive relationship he'd had in his entire life and damn if that's not satisfying to see.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
There are days it feels like I'm the only Thomas fan in the entire fandom who is 100% AOK with where he ended up. While it's nice to think of him with a better job and a boyfriend, I really don't think that's realistic, I think it undermines the point of the character which was to point out that locking people in closets sucks and we shouldn't do it, and I think people really undervalue the position of butler in that time period as well as Downton in general. You'll note that, after the black market fail, Thomas stopped trying to get out of service completely. That's because there really weren't many better job options. Even by the end of the series when more and more people were moving into other industries, those tended to be younger people just starting out. Thomas had the same problem a lot of people changing carriers later in life (and thinking of him as 'later in life' may seem ridiculous, but he's been in service a minimum 15 years) have. He has been in service long enough that getting a factory job or a job in a store or something similar that paid anywhere near what he was used to was minimal. While he would have developed skills that might help him starting his own business, he lacked the money to start up and didn't really have a way to get it. A medical job higher than 'orderly' is straight out. He does not have the education and in that time you weren't working your way up from the bottom in that field, which is why you had people like Lord Your-Baby's-Under-A-Cabbage-Leaf. And, of course, if he had any of those jobs he would not have paid room and board, which anyone living on their own and paying their own bills will tell you is a pretty big bonus.
Okay, but why Downton? Why couldn't he have gone on to a different, better big house? Because there wasn't one, that's why. The estates were crumbling, so jobs were getting scarce. We saw that in the series. The ones that stayed open wanted people who could fill a number of roles and Thomas didn't have the skill sets. We saw that too. I should hope I don't need to point out that he was flat out turned down for a job because the butler knew he was gay, where as Lord Grantham not only employed him, but kept him out of jail. That is a huge, screaming bonus. People get hung up on all of the ways the Downton crew handled him wrong and overlook the fact that pretty much anyplace else was going to do even worse. By the end of the series, the set up downstairs was about as supportive as he could hope for. Carson was still there, but he was on his way out. Being butler would put him equal with Mrs. Hughes and make them work together, which means she'd be far more able to observe how he works and come up with healthy ways to support him. Baxter and Andy are genuine friends and, well, Baxter in particular is Baxter.. The Bates's will likely be the cause of some friction (and of course, Mrs. Patmore frequently has the tact of a cricket bat to the face), but overall they don't want a fuss, so they won't raise one, especially after Mrs. Hughes makes it clear she doesn't like having to work with the hissing bundle of prickles that results from Mr. Bates's needling.
And of course, Downton has two - soon to be more - people who adore him beyond words and don't care about who he loves so long as they get their piggy back rides.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in:
I really would have liked to see more interaction between him and Mrs. Hughes/Sybbie. Mrs. Hughes, I suppose, is to be somewhat expected because they were both busy, but his first connection with the children was Sybbie, it was a pretty strong connection, then in season 6 it was basically preempted by George. I suspect this probably had a lot to do with earning him Mary's sympathies (which was important) and probably a bit to do with the availability of Sybbie's actress, but it still would have been nice to see.

Live-Action Mega Man Movie Listed as Being in the Works for Netflix
Tumblr media
All has been quiet on the live-action Mega Man movie front for a while, but an update to production company Supermarché's website recently came through with an idea of where it will be landing. While it might come as no surprise given Chernin Entertainment's first look deal with Netflix, it appears the adaptation is indeed heading for the streaming service at some point in the future.
Confirmation comes via the following excerpt of Supermarché's bio page:
Henry, Rel, and their in-house producer Orlee-Rose Strauss maintain an active development slate. Features in the works include: an adaptation of Capcom's MEGA MAN for Chernin Entertainment and Netflix, which they wrote and are directing; NEMESIS, based on the Mark Millar comic, produced by Jules Daly and Sue Kroll for Warner Bros.; an adaptation of Edward Abbey's novel THE MONKEY WRENCH GANG, produced by Ed Pressman, which they wrote and are directing; and RUNAWAY, a family adventure comedy based on a true story, screenplay adapted by Brendan O'Brien and produced by Matt Kaplan.
Supermarché is the company operated by Catfish's Henry Joost and Ariel "Rel" Schulman, who are lined up to direct the Mega Man movie, which is being written by Mattson Tomlin (The Batman) and produced by Masi Oka.
Other details are pretty much nonexistent at this point, and the film hasn't started shooting, so we likely have quite the wait ahead of us.

Danny Baker fired by BBC for tweeting royal baby chimpanzee picture Broadcaster Danny Baker has been fired by the BBC after he tweeted a joke about the Duke and Duchess Of Sussex's son using a picture of a chimpanzee. Harry and Meghan revealed on Wednesday that their new arrival was named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Radio DJ Baker made a joke about the birth, tweeting a black and white photo showing a well-dressed man and woman holding hands with a suited chimpanzee. Baker captioned it: "Royal baby leaves hospital". Following a backlash and allegations of racism given the Duchess of Sussex is mixed race, he deleted the post and apologised. On Thursday morning, he posted another message on social media, saying he had been "fired" by the BBC, later saying he had made a "grotesque mistake". A BBC spokesman said: "This was a serious error of judgment and goes against the values we as a station aim to embody. Danny's a brilliant broadcaster but will no longer be presenting a weekly show with us." Baker later hit back at his former employers, and tweeted: "The call to fire me from BBC 5Live was a masterclass of pompous faux-gravity. Took a tone that said I actually meant that ridiculous tweet and the BBC must uphold blah blah blah. "Literally threw me under the bus. Could hear the suits knees knocking." Baker added: "For the record - it was red sauce. Always," in reference to the regular feature Sausage Sandwich Game on his Saturday morning Radio 5 Live show. The segment takes a celebrity and gets two guests to guess which condiment the famous person would ask for if handed a sausage sandwich - brown sauce, red sauce or no sauce at all. Defending his actions on LBC, he accused the BBC of being "weasly", adding that he made an "innocent mistake". Speaking to his friend James O'Brien, the presenter said: "I used to do it on my show a lot, monkeys dressed as famous people with fairground music." He added: "The BBC suddenly decides it's going to throw me under the bus, and that's the thing that stings. I mean, there's a tremendously weasly thing to do again." He accused them of "giving credence" to the idea he was "revealed as a racist.. https://www.instagram.com/p/BxPYPeklkF5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=iwn2d1gkscry
