Most of my fics and things connected to stuff I've written/am writing will be under the tag #my writing, though it's a bit jumbled.

Recently I kind of accidentally churned out a trilogy of AU novellas based on @mayhemchicken-artblog's upcoming collaborative comic, The League of Extraordinary Gentlefolk, involving assorted Victorian era public domain characters fighting evil in grand fashion. My fics aren't within that exact canon, but sort of a bootleg neighborhood--one in which Jonathan Harker meets a number of trials and torments of increasing weirdness. That tag in my blog is "The Adventures of Jonathan Harker and the Strange Old Men," which leads you here.

I also have an Ao3 account under DribbledScribbles, which you can find here. But because I'm paranoid and want to decrease the chances of AI writing programs combing my stuff for content, I've set them all to private, so they're only accessible if you're an Ao3 user. (Not necessarily a writer! Just someone with an account.)

Also, for anything related to Barking Harker, the Dracula sequel AU novel I foolishly started last year thinking it would be another fanfic until I discovered I was several hundred pages in too deep, the tag is just #barking harker. The worst retcons in Star Wars

While I’m riding high on the finale to Star Wars: The Clone Wars (No I am not crying....I cried it all out last night) I have decided to compile a list of the worst retcons to the Star Wars franchise.

Why?  I dunno, I’m a crotchety old nerd who likes to complain about decades-old stories.  Do I need another reason?

In no particular order:

Making Emperor Palpatine a Sith

It’s been 21 years since The Phantom Menace came out, so for an entire generation of nerds he’s always been “Darth Sidious”, but we old-timers remember that for the 22 years before that there was no connection between the Emperor and the Sith.  The term “Sith” itself was present from the earliest iterations of the first film and was used in some promotional materials and tie-ins and toys, but it was solely connected to Darth Vader as a Dark Lord of the Sith.  The Expanded Universe built a specific philosophy and history around the Sith as a concept, not just as a catch-all term for darksider, and that history explicitly didn’t include the Emperor.  There was even hate and schism between the Sith and some other Dark Side philosophies, and even those who didn’t use the Force at all.  In The Truce at Bakura, an EU novel that began the day after Return of the Jedi, an Imperial governor initially dismisses the Rebels’ claims that the Emperor is dead as propaganda until they say that Vader is the one who killed him.  That he believes, and even says how foolish it was for the Emperor to have trusted a Sith.

Even without going into what Dark Side philosophy the Emperor did follow, having Vader as a Sith and the Emperor not helped flesh out the universe by showing that even amongst the totalitarian despots there were different factions.  Just like Hitler and Mussolini each had their own brands of Fascism, they can work together while still being distinct.

Introducing the concept of the Chosen One

People often forget that Darth Vader wasn’t the main antagonist of the original Star Wars film, Grand Moff Tarkin was.  Vader filled the role described as “The Dragon”, the enforcer and primary legman, and the threat they had to bypass so that they could destroy the real threat.  He was a lackey.  A cool lackey absolutely, who grew into the primary antagonist in The Empire Strikes Back, but still a lackey.  And despite how cool and badass he is (And don’t get me wrong, he is a fantastic character and one of the best villains in history) there’s nothing “special” about him within the context of the Jedi and Force users in general.  He does not have any significant advantage over Obi-Wan Kenobi in their duel and is obviously completely unprepared for Kenobi to become One with the Force at his loss (And it is debatable if he even “won” at all given Kenobi’s deliberate self-sacrifice).  When he and Luke duel in ESB he definitely has the upper hand throughout their entire fight, but only as somebody with more experience and training, not because he is Magically Superior.  By the time of ROTJ Luke has even surpassed him despite only three years of experience.

In the Original Trilogy Vader is portrayed as a dangerous, powerful, and skilled opponent, but never as somebody POWERFUL.  Never as somebody whose strength or control over the Force is legendary, who is heralded in prophecy.  Yoda performs feats with the Force that Vader never comes close to equaling.

To go back and say that actually his affinity the Force is the greatest that the Jedi have ever seen, even greater than Yoda himself (BTW, I’m including the midi-chlorians under this header) makes no sense.  To say that he was the Emperor’s #2, helping run the entire Empire right from the moment of its founding, contradicts the original film itself where he was lower on the chain of command.

Darth Vader, and by proxy Anakin Skywalker, was a good enough character without trying to shill his background all to hell.

The impending threat of the Yuuzhan Vong

I’ll be upfront, I never liked the stories with the Yuuzhan Vong in and of themselves (When they started coming in is right about when I stopped reading new EU material).  The New Jedi Order just didn’t grab my attention.  But what really riled me up was the way the EU tried to backfill the Vong into the franchise history by saying that the entire rise of the Galactic Empire was to prepare for their arrival.  That Palpatine knew they were coming, and since the Republic would have been incapable of standing against them he took over so that the galaxy could present a strong, unified front against them.

This is something I actually see a lot of in fiction, and it pisses me off each time: The evil despot actually had noble goals because they knew of an even greater threat and they needed to take control in order to deal with it, because a dictatorship gets things done.  You even see this in real life when people try to say that for all Hitler’s faults you have to respect that he made Germany a powerhouse that was this close to conquering the world, and that Mussolini made the trains run on time.  Not only are these examples patently false (Nazi Germany never was “this” close to winning the war, and the trains never did run on time in Italy), but they come with the tacit endorsement that maybe their evilness would be worth it for the benefits.

The Galactic Empire explicitly wasn’t a Super Efficient Society.  We saw time and again how wasteful the Empire was with its resources as it squandered them on inefficient superweapon after superweapon, how it laid waste to planet after planet for the purposes of propaganda.  The Empire was so inefficient that it was able to be toppled by a ragtag band of rebels who had nowhere near the resources, population, wealth, or control it had.  If the Empire couldn’t even defeat the Rebellion, just how was it supposed to stand against the Vong?  And if the explanation is that the Emperor had been seduced by his own ambition and forgotten his original “noble” goals, why would other characters who knew the truth have gone along with his wanton oppression even after his death?

Trying to give the Empire a “reason” for existing was self-contradictory and borderline offensive.

Having the Clones fight for the Republic

I’m very much in two minds over this one, because as bad as the original retcon was other creators have managed to turn it into genius (Looking at you Clone Wars and The Clone Wars).  But I’m nothing if not petty, so...

The Clone Wars were one of the eras that had not been discussed in great detail in the EU before the Prequels came out, instead only being vaguely alluded to.  George Lucas was already talking about making more movies and they didn’t want to contradict what was to come.  But even with only those vague allusions, it was established that the Clones were the bad guys.  The Clonemasters were regarded monsters who unleashed hordes upon the Republic like a swarm of locusts or a plague.  The Clones themselves were often unstable, and regarded by the populace as soulless duplicates overwhelming the galaxy.  The clones were held in such fear by the populace that Mara Jade -- an Old Empire loyalist (Sort-of) -- decided to switch from passively assisting the New Republic because her boss told her to to actively assisting them at the thought of the Empire starting the Clone Wars again.

Even the name of the conflict implies that the Clones were the enemy: People don’t name a war after their own soldiers.  The Droid War, Separatist Secession, Clone & Droid Conflict, Jedi Aggression, etc. all would have made more sense for the war as depicted.

Getting into philosophy, the idea of cloning soldiers expressly for war is morally abhorrent.  It’s mass slavery.  And I am far from the first person to point this out, but that aspect is not even mentioned in the Prequel films.  The Jedi accepting this clone army is repugnant, and some people have used this to show that the Jedi Order was already corrupt at the time of the rise of the Empire, but this wasn’t explored at all in the films that introduced the clones as the Grand Army of the Republic.

Getting into just simple common sense...HOW FUCKING DENSE DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO JUST ACCEPT A MYSTERIOUS ARMY THAT APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE?!?!

That makes no sense.  It never made sense.  The idea that nobody in the Republic, from the government to the military to the populace at large, questioned the very existence of the clone army....it was too much.  The exploration of just how ridiculous this is made for great fodder in The Clone Wars, but only because they had to paper over the GIANT GAPING CHASMS that the concept created.

Making the Jedi a cult

In the old EU, the Jedi of the Old Republic were described as allowed to have families, even being encouraged to do so.  They were allowed to pursue lives and interests and careers outside of the order itself, and didn’t need to forsake who they used to be.  The Jedi Council didn’t have legal authority over the lives of its members, and didn’t try to mandate personal lifestyle.

People started training in their teens when they were old enough to at least understand the concept, and if they were taken as children it was in unusual extraneous circumstances.

While there were Jedi customs, and Jedi Codes, and they had rules and regulations to follow, but they addressed how they should act as Jedi.  They didn’t care what kind of clothing you wore.

Starting with The Phantom Menace, Jedi were taken at such young ages to begin their training that they could not give any consent to their enlistment, nor were they offered any alternatives when they had grown up and may be able to decide for themselves.  They are indoctrinated into a singular Jedi philosophy, not allowed to even debate the dogma of the Council without ostracism, let alone actually defy it.  The Jedi Council unilaterally makes decisions for the entire Order galaxy-wide without any apparent method for dissent or appeal, or any devolution of authority.

Taking (Abducting) children as infants, not allowing them any contact with their families, mandating an isolated ascetic existence...the Jedi Order became a cult.

That’s a cult, plain and simple.

These changes didn’t make the Jedi “complex”, didn’t make the conflict “shades of grey”, they’re just creepy and nonsensical.

Madou Monogatari I explanation

Alright, explanations for each game (for newcomers anyway) coming right up. I’m going to cover only the simple stuff in each post, not every little detail like enemies (unless I make a post covering the alternate TurboGrafx16 and Mega Drive versions for this game)

I’m making this mainly for people who need the Madou games explained to them, and find the Puyo Nexus pages too outdated, I will try my best, and feel free to correct me on some matters. (Someone really needs to make a proper Madou wiki, besides myself maybe..)

Madou Monogatari I will be the first game people should be introduced to, even though II was technically created first, it would be weird for us to go in a backwards order.

Madou Monogatari I is the first game in the original trilogy pack, telling the story of 6-year old Arle Nadja graduating kindergarten. In order to graduate, she must go through a dangerous tower, collect three spheres, defeat the horrible monster inside, then return safely.

Not the safest thing in the world, especially for a child, but despite Arle’s fears, she’s being supported by all her classmates and her teacher. Since she was selected to represent the class, she is the one who goes in the tower to complete the exam.

This is the most straightforward plot of any Madou game (unless one is playing the GameGear version). You collect the spheres, as well as some tablets needed in order to progress at one point, scale back down to a path that leads to the exit, and Arle will fight the following at the end.

Should you be playing the MSX2 version, Arle will fight Cockatrice, which is followed by Mamono, the demon bird from Puyo Puyo Tsu.

Buuuut if you happened to be playing the PC98 version, you’re greeted with this fellow, with no Cockatrice at all…

This is Fudoushi (lit. Rot Wizard). He is unironically one of my favorite bosses, because he pretty much tells you what you’re in for with the PC98 version.

In both versions, Fudoushi and Mamono are capable of creating horrible illusions, which leads Arle to think that she really did complete her test at first, seeing her classmates upon exiting a door.

Until she’s met with a horrifying vision

Hope you guys weren’t planning on sleeping tonight.

Once Fudoushi is defeated, Arle (while crying out of fear) realizes that it was just an illusion, and knows that all her classmates are still waiting for her, supporting her. She exits the tower, hesitant at first, now seeing the real deal. Her classmates congratulate her, so does her teacher, and you’re treated to a heart-warming ending montage of Arle growing up to be a great mage over the years.

Now the GameGear version, is a little different, and a bit more complicated.

As you can see from the header image, Arle has a “rival” in the GameGear version, who is competing to collect the spheres before her. The boy known as Camus (or Kamyu) has a bit of an ego at the start and is convinced he will graduate before Arle. He never fights her directly though, and at one point, Arle finds him passed out in a hallway.

Camus at one point will actually hinder Arle on her quest. He will steal one of the magic spheres if Arle takes over 3 hours worth of gameplay (which you probably have spent grinding on enemies or trying to figure out where to go), and move one of the spheres to the basement, storing them for safekeeping.

Unlike the other versions, Arle must travel to the basement of the tower after she collects all the tablets, from there she can reach the very top, fight Cockatrice (who holds the last sphere), and then Fudoushi.

Should Arle help Camus when he’s passed out on the floor, he will actually aid Arle in the battle and heal her, but Fudoushi promptly smacks him away when he tries to get involved.

This time, we are not treated to a montage for the ending, unfortunately, but a rather shocking reveal-- Camus was actually an illusion all along that the teacher created, so he was never real.

So that’s Madou Monogatari I, the most linear and simple of the games (except for the console counterparts which I will get to another time). In my next post, I’ll tell the story of Madou Monogatari II, and its infamous decapitation scene.

CARLSEN ADVENTSKALENDER: 3 Heldinnen zu Weihnachten

Hey und herzlich Willkommen zum 6. Türchen des Carlsen-Adventskalenders (und zum meinem ersten deutschen Post auf diesem kleinem Blog :D). In den letzten Tagen konntet ihr bei meinen lieben Mit-Weihnachtselfen schon viele tolle Beiträge lesen, was ihr, falls ihr dafür noch keine Zeit hattet, unbedingt nachholen müsst! Heute zum Nikolaus, den ihr hoffentlich mit viel Schoki, Mandarinen und sauberen Stiefeln verbringt, möchte ich euch drei meiner liebsten Carlsen Heldinnen verstellen, die mir als Kind und Jugendliche und auch noch jetzt immer Kraft, Hoffnung und ein Vorbild gegeben haben. Meiner Meinung nach ist Weihnachten die perfekte Zeit, um Inspiration und Wärme zu finden, schließlich liegt es an jedem von uns, in dieser kalten Jahreszeit Licht zu spenden.

Hermine Jean Granger

Um ganz klassisch, ja fast schon weihnachtlich zu beginnen: Natürlich darf bei einer Auflistung um Heldinnen Hermine nicht fehlen. Ich bin bestimmt nicht die einzige, die schon von klein auf an in Hermine eine Heldin gefunden hatte, die mich durch meine Kindheit und noch viel länger begleiten sollte. Als Kind schon war ich sehr begeistert von Lesen, ging gerne in die Schule und liebte es, zu lernen und neue Dinge zu entdecken. Leider wird in unserer Gesellschaft oft dazu geneigt, Nerds und Leser als etwas negatives abzustempeln und als Streber oder Besserwisser zu verschreien. Hier ist Hermine ein Charakter für Kinder, der ihnen zeigt, das Wissen und Belesenheit wichtige Dinge sind, und dir sogar im Kampf gegen dunkle Mächte nützen können. Viel wichtiger aber noch finde ich, dass Hermine in den Harry Potter Romanen auch viel über sich selbst und ihren Wissensdurst lernt, und realisiert dass es trotzdem noch andere wichtige Dinge im Leben gibt, wie Freundschaft und Mut. “The brightest witch of her age” verzaubert mich Jahr für Jahr wieder und ist eine wahre Heldin für viele kleine Leser*innen.

Genya Safin

Eine etwas unbekanntere, vielleicht etwas unlikly Heldin, ist für mich Genya aus der Grischa Trilogie. Trotz ihrer Gabe, das Aussehen einer Person zu verändern und ihrem Status als Korporalki, wird Genya als weniger wertvoll angesehen, da sie als Geschenk an die Königin deren Dienerin ist. Die gesamte Trilogie hindurch muss wird Genya von vielen Seiten mit herablassenden Bemerkungen und Slut shaming, Neid, Belästigungen und sogar Missbrauch behandelt. On top of that trifft sich einige falsche Entscheidungen und hat ihre Fehler, mit denen sie mehr als einmal konfrontiert wird. Und trotzdem wächst sie durch die Buchreihe hindurch zu einer warmherzigen, witzigen, feminstischen Heldin, die mit sich selbst im reinen ist, weiß, wofür sie steht und die ihre Fehler kennt und mit ihnen umgehen kann. Mein Herz blüht einfach auf, wann immer ich an Genya denke, weil sie für mich eine unheimlich starke Frau ist, die diese Stärke nicht im Kampfe zeigt, sondern in dem, wie sie durch die Hölle gehen musste, und dies mit Stärke und Liebe tat, um nur noch stärker wiederzukommen. Eine weihnachtliche Heldin, die hoffentlich bald noch viel mehr Fans bekommen wird.

Lady Fire

Wahrscheinlich auch eher etwas unbekannt, aber eine meiner größten Heldinnen ist Lady Fire aus Die Flammende (OG: Fire). Die Gründe dafür sind ähnlich wie die für Genya, ich mag es einfach, wenn Frauen stark sein dürfen, ohne Kampfmaschinen sein zu müssen (wenn sie das aber trotzdem sind: Go Ladies!). Auch hier ist Fire eine ungewöhnlich schöne Frau, die halb Mensch und halb Monster ist. Diese Schönheit ist allerdings Grund für jede Menge (sexueller) Belästigung und Gewalt ihr gegenüber, gegen welche sie sich jedoch erst lernen muss, zu wehren. Denn durch ihre Monster-Identität hat Fire die Gabe, das Bewusstsein der Menschen kontrollieren zu können, was sie allerdings mit ganzem Herz verabscheut, wie ihre Schönheit, und sich selbst. Fires Heldenreise ist eine Reise in erste Linie zu sich selbst, in der es darum geht, zu erkennen, dass man es wert ist, geliebt zu werden, am allermeisten von sich selbst. Es ist aber auch eine Reise, in welcher sie immer wieder beweist, dass sie ein Herz aus Gold hat, Liebe und Wärme und Respekt und Verständnis die größten Stärken sind und man sich selbst niemals aufgeben sollte. Fire steht die gesamte Geschichte über für ihre Freunde und Familie ein, zögert niemals, zu helfen. All diese Gründe machen sie zu einer wunderbaren Heldin, die Die Flammende zu einem meiner Lieblingsbücher werden ließ.

Dies waren nur 3 von vielen buchigen Heldinnen, die mich seit meiner Kindheit begleiten und mir immer wieder zeigen, dass, obwohl wir in einer Gesellschaft leben, die durch das Patriachart immer noch versucht, Jungen und Mädchen in bestimmte Rollen zu stecken und Frauen es verdammt schwer macht, Heldinnen zu sein, wir alle das Potenzial haben, Held unserer eigenen Geschichte zu werden. Sei es dadurch, anderen zu helfen, lernen sich selbst zu lieben oder Voldemort besiegen: Wir sind alle heldenhaft.

Disini gw mau membahas My Impressions of the Members.

1. Rap Monster a.k.a Kim Namjoon

Gw ga nyangka Namjoon seganteng itu hahahah padahal gw selalu bilang Namjoon jelek (maapin) dari di bandara soeta Namjoon pake masker juga udah keliatan gantengnya ditambah pas dia tepat berada di depan gw pas konser Yaampun ko dia ganteng sih haha kesel sendiri. mana rambutnya pas lagi normal lagi. tapi gw pikir Namjoon tinggi bgt gitu yah, aslinya asa ga tinggi2 amat ah. terus dia tuh keliatan ramah gt dan pembawaan leadernya oke bgt.

2. Jin a.k.a Kim Seokjin

Karena udah tau Jin ganteng kali yah jadi berharap Jin tuh ganteng bgt ya ga kesampean. soalnya yah aslinya emang ganteng ga bisa ganteng bgt hehehe. mukanya kecil bgt yampun doi kurus bgt kesel sendiri liatnya. mana dia pas depan gw minta di foto gt lagi asli gw hanya cengo seketika. pas dibandara juga dia jalannya cepet bgt jadi ga kekejar. tapi Jin baik bgt :)

3. Suga a.k.a Min Yoongi a.k.a Agust D

Gw ga nyangka Suga se happy itu pas konser dan MANTAP!!! (diajarin siapa sih Yoongi?) pas di bandara Ya ampun jarak kita udah tinggal pegangan tangan doang tapi doi ga mau haahah terus doi pake parka keresek lagi dan jalan dengan gaya khasnya Yoongi, pas di stage depan gw Suga putih bgt anaknya tapi ketutup topi kesel.

4. J-Hope a.k.a Jung Hoseok

Gw ga nyangka Hoseok juga seganteng itu hahaha, dan dia paling ramah dan baik bgt. pas di bandara walaupun pake masker dia tetep senyum gt ke fans. duh Hoseok TERBAEKKK. pas konser dia NGAMBIL BANNER ORANG DI SAMPING GW DAN BALIKIN BANNERNYA KE ORANG YANG SAMA. DUH BERARTI HOSEOK INGET DONG SAMA ORANG YANG DIA AMBIL YANG MANA. dan Hosoek tepat depan muka gw banget yampun gw ga ngerti lagi. pusing bgt hahahah. malem itu walaupun Hoseok bukan bias lo tapi lo akan suka bgt sama dia. dasar perusak list bias.

5. Jimin a.k.a Park jimin a.k.a Chimchim

Dear Jimin kamu ko kicik bgt sih, so smol you know. duh Jimin tuh fansnya banyak bgt yah doi imut2 bgt. tapi dia terlalu kiyowo kalo buat gw jadinya gw biasa aja sama Jimin. mau Jimin berkali2 dateng ke tempat gw juga ya gw biasa aja hehe. tapi gw sebel sih pas di bandara Jimin biasanya ramah ini dia diem aja kecapean kali yah.

6. V a.k.a Kim Taehyung

Sama kaya Jin gw berharap Taehyung ganteng bgt kayanya yah tapi karena emang dasarnya ganteng yah jadinya ganteng aja ga pke banget. pas di bandara dia kalem2 gt orgnya. terus pas konser dia pake headband dan kacamata itu sudah cukup membuat saya puas hahahaha.

7. Jungkook a.k.a Jeon Jungkook

Adek kesayangan noona, sama kaya Jin dan Taehyung dimana Jungkook yah aslinya udah ganteng ga ditambah bgt tapinya. gamau diem bgt anaknya. pas di bandara mukanya ditutup semua kesel!!! pas konser lumayan ceria tapi tetep terbaek Hoseok sih malem itu. yatapi gw sayang bgt sama adek satu ini.

Overall bangtan tuh ganteng2 gemas gt dan mereka sangat “gimana caranya fans lo seneng” terus mereka stage performance nya juga diatas rata2. setelah nonton bangtan gw jadi sayang sama bangtan. oiyah gw juga ga akan menyertakan foto2 gw pas konser karena foto gw blur semua hahaha. itu terwakilkan di header tumblr gw yah.
