See link in bio. 6th August 1848, The crew of the frigate ‘HMS Daedalus’. sailing between the Cape of Good Hope and St Helena, spotted an unknown creature which they estimated to be sixty feet in length above the water and a further 30 or 40ft submerged. The Captain P. M’Quhae described the event as such. ‘On our attention being called to the object it was discovered to be an enormous serpent, with head and shoulders kept about four feet constantly above the surface of the sea, and as nearly as we could approximate by comparing it with the length of what our maintopsail yard would show in the water, there was at the very least 60 feet of the animal. The diameter of the serpent was about 15 or 16 inches behind the head, which was, without any doubt, that of a snake; and it was never, during the twenty minutes that it continued in sight of our glasses, once below the surface of the water: its colour a dark brown, with yellowish white about the throat. It had no fins, but something like the mane of a horse, or rather a bunch of seaweed, washed about its back.’ 🐍The sightings match the description of another sea serpent seen in Massachusetts. Beginning on August 16th 1817, the coastal towns of the North Shore of Massachusetts were the scene of near continuous sighting of a strange sea serpent. A little late but was still able to drop by as a delegate for the Malaysian Youth @ Safer Internet Day 2020 organised by @isocmalaysia @umlawsociety . Some people don't even know such event exist and it's actually a global event itself where we promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people while inspiring a national conversation. Apparently there's an Inuit legend of one called aasrivak that kills people on the ice. Also decided to paint the Loveland frog. 22nd May 1666, death of German Jesuit and natural philosopher Gaspar Schott. His 1662 book ‘Physica Curiosa’ is a compendium of engravings and stories based upon monsters and bizarre animals considered at the time to exist, and also physical abnormalities and deformities. Although dating from the medieval period, the persistence of fabled creatures in the imagination continued, as we shall see. 23rd May 1707, birth of Swedish botanist, zoologist, and physician Carl Linnaeus, the "father of modern taxonomy" for his formulation of the system of naming organisms. Studying plants and animals, he published Systema Naturae in 1735, which outlined his ideas for the hierarchical classification of the natural world, dividing it into the animal kingdom, the plant kingdom, and the "mineral kingdom". Also included are dragons, the phoenix, sirens, and the manticore, as well as frogs that revert back to tadpoles, and a plant whose fruit is in the form of sheep. Such was the persistence of the existence of these mythological creature that they were included in Linnaeus' Systema Naturae until the sixth edition. In 1735, Linnaeus travelled to the Dutch republic to study medicine, stopping at Hamburg he was invited by the Mayor to see the town’s natural wonder, the remains of a seven-headed hydra, which the local monks claimed to be the Beast of Revelation.
