It's been an embarrassingly long amount of time, but I've just published Chapter 19 of Space Trash. I really haven't abandoned it. I still very much want to finish it, but the writing muse has definitely left me high and dry. (And, not just where it pertains to Space Trash) If people still care about it, I'm going to work on finishing it, even if it's slowly. That's how anything gets done though, right? Little bit at a time.

Can I hear a little about your OCs? I tried to search about them in your blog but I found it kinda hard to find their lore, do you mind telling me a bit about them?
I don't mind at all! I've been extensively examining and reworking my OCs so I can get back into writing for them. Here's a list and short description for them!
These are the OCs currently in my canons for each series. Any others I come up with tend to be in alternate versions.
Dragon Age
Morgan Walker: Ser Morgan the Mysterious, Morgan is the Hero of Ferelden and slayer of the Archdemon. He is also from our world, having hopped through other worlds before landing in Thedas and anchoring there. He had a son with Morrigan before they amicably separated and Morgan fell for Cullen. Morgan is nurturing and compassionate, but also has a sarcastic side, and enjoys goofing around. - Faceclaim: Sebastian Stan
Freyr Surana: King-Consort Freyr is an elf-blooded mage from the Anderfels living in Kinloch Hold and escaped with Jowan. He fell in love with Alistair over the course of their journey and married him. Studious and diligent, Freyr is also deeply kind and loving, and his purity of heart helped keep the group's spirits up. - Faceclaim: Tom Busson
Cas Shepard: Cassander Shepard was once a powerful biotic and Commander of the Alliance Systems. However, at the end of the Reaper War, he and Morgan traveled to the Crucible and due to their powers, ended up crashing into Thedas. Snarky and cocky, but well-meaning at heart, Cas doesn't have it in him to be mean to anyone who doesn't deserve it. Eventually joins the Inquisition and falls for The Iron Bull - Faceclaim: Chris Evans
Havi Amell: A powerful mage from Kinloch Hold, Havi treats Freyr and Alistair like little brothers and cares for them deeply. He is protective and ruthless in the desire to keep them safe. He also quickly learns martial combat to supplement his skills. He is appointed Teyrn of Gwaren, though spends more time with Alistair and Freyr. - Faceclaim: Jorge Cobian
Mila Cooper: A librarian from our world, Mila is a pacifist and stellar potioneer. Her foreknowledge of events helped her to greatly assist the Kirkwall gang, though she was unable to stop Anders. She works as Varric's editor, and thus deals with all his businesses and secret informants. She is energetic and knowledgable, though can be indecisive. She fell in love with Fenris, and is pregnant by Inquisition. - Faceclaim: Britanny Snow
Cal Hawke: The Champion of Kirkwall, Cal is deeply protective of his family. Though he never wished to be a hero, he took on the mantle, and became Viscount for a brief while. He loves Varric, and is a gentle soul at heart, kind and honest. Though he can be pretty lazy and unmotivated. Does get along with his brother, Carver. - Faceclaim: Henry Cavill
Ava Hawke: Ava is a mage, just like her father, and is far more ruthless. She will do whatever she must to protect her family, and is a powerful blood mage. Despite this, she has fallen for Sebastian and become the Witch-Queen of Starkhaven, with the respect of the former Arishok. Desires the power to keep her siblings safe. - Faceclaim: Katie McGrath
Tash Adaar: A young Qunari child, Tash has been a mage from a young age, and is exceedingly powerful. Personable and cheery, though suffering from a deep-seated fear of abandonment, Tash becomes known as the Child of Andraste and then the Inquisitor, and uses this to his political advantage, proving to have a cunning beyond his years.
Vylandin Mithra: Vylandin hails from a mixed Avvar-Dalish clan in the Frostback Mountains, and is of immense stature, while also using his magic to bolster his physical capabilities. He comes to Haven and is appointed the Dalish Advisor to the Inquisition, and serves as liaison to other clans and non-Andrastian allies. He saves Josephine from attack, and the two ambassadors fall for each other from a place of mutual respect. Vylandin has a fondness for terrible jokes. - Faceclaim: Brock O'Hurn
Jack Theirin: The adopted son of Alistair and Freyr, Jack was born as the son of a royal guard. Upon his death, the two Kings adopted the young lad and made him their heir. They raised him as best they could, the lad having latent magical talent, and he became a princely young man of great moral fiber. He ran from home to help the Inquisition, becoming the personal honor guard of Tash. - Faceclaim: Luke Eisner
Gawain Trevelyan: In Ostwick, when the Mage-Templar war broke out, the residents of the Ostwick Circle refused to fight each other. The Ostwickers fought off bands of rebel mages and roving Templars alike, and soon Gawain Trevelyan, third son of a noble house, came to represent them. This group of Templars and mages coexisted and were invited to the Conclave as a prime example of peace. By a stroke of luck, they were late and missed the explosion. Finds himself romancing Blackwall. Gawain is an academic, but a powerful speaker and leader, and the Justinia Delegation, as they became known, is a powerful ally to the Inquisition. - Faceclaim: Jens de Fries.
Other
Jesse Malkin: A shy and stoic individual, Jesse, in any universe, shines with his intelligence, which is often underestimated due to his physique and handsome appearance. - Faceclaim: Chris Hemsworth
Mordred Wiseman: Intelligent and slightly hedonistic, Mordred, in any universe he appears, is highly skilled with people and friendly, though he can be selfish as well. - Faceclaim: Charlie Gillespie
Xander Holbrook: Xander is the classic example of a knight, honorable and firm. Though he can also be pretty judgemental. In any universe he appears, he is protective, though slightly sarcastic and aggressive. - Faceclaim: Greg Rogstad
Mass Effect
Orion Shepard - The paragon of justice, Orion and his cousin Cassander shared the main bulk of credit for the triumph against the Reapers. Orion, the first human Spectre, became a symbol of truth and honor, and carefully promoted diplomacy wherever possible. Engaged in a poly relationship with Kadan and Garrus. - Faceclaim: Michael Yerger
Ellis Walker - Morgan's father, the two traveled forward in time to the Mass Effect universe, manifesting strange powers. Ellis had traveled between worlds before, but repressed those memories due to abuse from Morgan's mother. With a crippled self-esteem and high anxiety, Ellis did his best to keep his son safe, but nearing the end of the Reaper War, Ellis stayed with his new lover, Steve Cortez, and tragically had no idea what happened to his son Morgan. - Faceclaim: Misha Collins

In the Shattering of Things, Chapter 69: Artifice
Tumblr media
Chapter Summary: The Winter Palace dazzles and overwhelms Rose on her first major political caper. The tasks are clear: find the assassin, find enough dirt to blackmail an empire in her favor, save Thedas. No big deal.
Fic Summary: Lady Rose Trevelyan's idle, aristocratic life blinks out in a haze of irrelevance when the breach destroys the Conclave. She may be soft and coddled when she joins the Inquisition, but there's a fierceness inside her she's yet to fully recognize. Armed with only a few relevant skills and the mark that makes her a legend, she is thrust onto a path delivering hope where it’s long been scorched away and finds comfort in the grumpy, handsome stick in the mud charged with her protection and training. As she stumbles her way across southern Thedas, she begins to realize she's tangled at the center of machinations she barely understands, and she's not alone in that. Enter Hawke.
Excerpt and art below the cut 👇
He hunches over a massive book on her desk, bound in the skin of an animal with its hair intact almost like the smooth, spotted coat of one of father’s hunting hounds. The corners of the grimoire are secured with ornately filigreed metal fittings. Maker knows how old it is or what secrets are contained therein. I reach to open it but Hawke catches me by the wrist.
“Don’t touch anything. It could be rigged with spells for all we know,” he says softly. He withdraws a dagger out from under his jacket, gives it a tentative poke looking for a magical trap and then uses it to unfold a letter that sits partially curled on the desk. I swing around the desk to read it upside down.
“It’s from Celene,” I say. “She begs Morrigan to be by her side all night. Concerns about assassins.” I glance up at him. “So she knows already.”
Hawke cranes his neck around me, his expression plainly perplexed by whatever he’s caught sight of.
“What?” I ask as he walks out of the office. “Hawke.”
“There’s a cat,” he says, over his shoulder. “A Maker forsaken cat. It’s a little weird, right? Don’t normally think of cats in these great palaces, do you? In the library no less.”
A sense of uneasiness washes over me as he approaches a small gray tiger that walks curiously in our direction.
“Hawke,” I say again, prickles running the length of my back. Hawke turns to me fully, gesturing behind him.
“You don’t like cats?”
In a whisper of motion, the cat silently grows into an elaborately, darkly adorned woman behind Hawke. Celene’s arcane advisor. Hawke turns back before I can warn him and he stumbles backward with a startled curse. I jog to Hawke’s side instinctively, feeling sure that I’m better off next to him in the presence of such a creature, whose office alone smacks of blood magic and competence.
“Well, well, well,” slinks a sultry, smoky voice across the silver-lit library, gliding like an enigma embodied. “What do we have here? The Inquisitor, fabled Herald of the faith, delivered from the grasp of the Fade by the blessed Andraste herself and some… manner of lace-festooned brute? ‘Tis hardly the place for guests.”
Hawke tilts his head with dawning familiarity and taps his finger against his lips.
“Mordred? Morgoth? Morgan is it? No, no. Give me a minute. I’ll get it.”
All vestiges of mystery evaporate as Hawke disassembles her with his usual antics.
“Morrigan.”
She slumps her shoulders and rolls her eyes. “I should have guessed it was you.”

Ok so in my entire life I published a grand total of 5 works that have WORDS and LINES in them soo:

It was not uncommon for Rylen to lie awake in his bed late into the night, thoughts racing through his mind.
2. A Hidden Oasis - Rylen/Farie Lavellan, E
The small bundle of food he spread out on the old worn out blanket seemed like too much of a luxury.
3. An Inquisitor Walks Into a Tavern - Cullen Rutherford/Thalia Trevelyan, Cullen Rutherford & Rylen, T
“I see.” Rylen sank back into his seat and raised a tankard full of nice cold beer to his lips.
4. Denerim Royal Library - Alistair Theirin/Miranda Cousland, E
Denerim Royal Library is the national library of Ferelden.
5. Silent miracle - Alistair Theirin/Morgan Cousland, G

Introducing you to a couple of my mage Inquisitors
Morgan Trevelyan
VERY MUCH part of the mage rebellion
the tarot card saying "they elected him because of his noble blood" is only PARTIALLY true
some of the elder mages voted owing to that practical reason, yes
a good portion of his fellow mages voted for him because they were tired of him reading aloud from Anders's manifesto
Which he had a copy of prior to joining the Inquisition
Naturally, with him at the head, allying with the templars was never really an option
He was ALWAYS going to recruit his revolutionary comrades into the Inquisition
100% didn't believe the Conclave would work, but was stoked to be there b/c it put him on equal footing with the templars
Barely has a relationship with House Trevelyan, since he left early
Has been to exactly two grand balls since going to the Ostwick circle; hated both of them.
Doesn't think of much of noble life or noble politics
Very, very reluctant to have joined with the excessively religious Inquisition even if he does on a vague level believe the Maker exists
Believes the Maker exists, but that everything the Chantry says is a scam
Alina Trevelyan
would have preferred to stay in the Ostwick Circle; she was quite occupied with studying gynecology
Would have been a great gynecologist, or at least an amazing scientist, if it weren't for having to be part of the Inquisition and the mage rebellion
Is a firm atheist because she doesn't believe any sane creator deity would create mages
Andraste to is nothing more than a mentally ill woman whose visions were exploited by Maferath, who then killed her when she was no longer useful
That, or possibly just a politician in her own right
Doesn't think Andraste was a mage though
And if the Maker DOES exist she finds him to be very much in line with a deadbeat dad
Entered the Ostwick Circle at eleven
Doesn't have a great relationship with House Trevelyan either
Helps Sera overcome her fear of mages through dating her

Thank you @socially-awkward-skeleton for tagging me in this a week or so ago. These are fun.
Three ships: Right now I'm trying to focus on these babes:
Arthur Morgan/Albert Mason (Red Dead Redemption 2) - absolute bestest softest boys who deserve all the love.
Peter Jakes/Endeavour Morse (Endeavour) - I just can't stop thinking about these dummies. Like a curse.
Erim Lavellan/Liam Hebert (Dragon Age Inquisition) - Just make two OCs and then make them kiss and be the softest to each other. Then just break your own damn heart. Just do it.
First ever ship: Roy Mustang/Maria Ross (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) - Starting off with the rarest of pairs really does mark my entire fandom experience
Last song: My Lair by Bear's Den - been listening to my playlist for Osyen Trevelyan lately
Last film: rewatch of A Knight's Tale because it's the best and i wanted something on while I was working from home last week.
Currently reading: Just started the Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch as a recommendation from a friend and loving it. About to start Hercule Poirot's Christmas by Agatha Christie because i bought it for Christmas last year and didn't so I'm making another attempt.
Currently watching: Havent started something. But just finished Wednesday and loved it.
Currently consuming: Pepto. My dinner hit me wrong even though it was delicious curry :/
Currently craving: More pepto.....and cheesecake?
Tagging @confidentandgood, @captastra, @twosides--samecoin, @coffeeandthen, @funkypoacher, @galaxycunt, and @bryndeavour and anyone else who want to share please tag me! And if you want to be tagged on things in the future like my pined post. ^_^

If Dragon Age: Dreadwolf takes place 8-10 years after Trespasser, would your Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor be a MILF/DILF/PILF?
I've got so many heroes of thedas that I just wanna make a post to answer that question for each of them. gonna put it under the cut so here we go.
Wardens
Belladonna Amell: Is both Aromantic and Asexual, and not interested in having kids. She'd be in her late 30's, and considers herself the hottest bitch in the room at all times, AILF (abomination i'd like to fuck)
Eden Amell: Is dead.
Tola Kader: Not interested in having kids, has warden shit to worry about. Would be in her mid 50's.
Oriel Mahariel: Had Kieran at 22 with Morrigan. Would be in his mid 40's, PILF.
Jelsi Brosca: Had Kieran with Morrigan when she was 25, but wasn't around to parent him. Would be in her late 40's. Technically a MILF but not in practice.
Adelaide Cousland: After she finds the cure for the blight, her and Alistair have 2 kids. Duncan Bryce Theirin, and 3 years later they have Eleanor Wynn Theirin. Would be in her early 40's, MILF.
Eloril Tabris: After finding a cure for the blight, retiring from the wardens, and marrying Leliana, they adopt an elven baby that they name Shartan. Eloril is fully focused on her role as Arl of Denerim, and Leliana is Divine, so he's one of the most protected babies in Thedas. Would be in her late 40's, MILF.
Champions
Easter Hawke: Her and Fenris have their 3 children by this point, none of them were planned. Their oldest is Bethany, and they have twins 4 years later, Malcolm and Maurevar. Would be in her mid 40's. MILF.
Fiona Hawke: Her and Anders don't have any children together. Would be in her mid 40's.
Holly: Her and Merril adopt a pair of elven twins, orphaned by the mage-templar conflict; Nesrin and Cessida Sabrae-Hawke, a boy and a girl. Would be in her mid 40's, MILF.
Malcolm Hawke JR: Him and Fenris have no children. Would be in his mid 40's.
Jeannie Hawke: Her and Isabela have no children together. Would be in her mid 40's.
Theodore: Him and Anders end up taking in a young vashoth boy named Amaar Hawke. Would be in his mid 40's, DILF.
Inquisitors
Niara Lavellan: Has no children, would be in her mid 40's.
Fane Lavellan: Her and Sera have 1 child, a boy named Llorin. Would be in her mid 30's, MILF.
Ezra Trevelyan: He and Dorian have no kids. Would be in his Early 40's.
Sumeyye Adaar: Her and Thom have no kids. Would be in her mid 50's.
Celene Trevelyan: Her and Josephine have no kids. Would be in her late 40's.
Von Cadash: Him and Bull have no kids, and have no desire to have kids. Would be in his late 40's.
Minerva Morgan: Her and Krem have 1 kid, a girl named Lucidia. Would be in her late 30's, MILF.

For a second, Dorian wonders if he should learn some other method of self-defense on the off chance magic won't be available to him. For a second.
“You are, without a doubt, the absolute worst,” Dorian grumbled, throwing open the locker door that held his belongings. Immediately, he took out a comb to run through his hair, and then a smaller one for his mustache.
“Because I did what you asked me to do?” Morgan asked, leaning against the lockers to watch him, arms folded across his chest.
“You humiliated me,” Dorian snapped.
“There’s no one here but us. And it was your first time using a sword. You have nothing to be embarrassed about. You told me to teach you like I would anyone else,” Morgan reminded him.
“So you laid me out, quite literally, on my backside? Is that how you teach everyone? By showing them they have no chance of winning against you?” It wasn’t so much the words Dorian was using, but the tone that hurt.
“Again, your first time. No one is talented enough to best a seasoned warrior their first session. And yes, sometimes I’ll beat the pants off you. Real fights aren’t fair,” he argued. “Besides, you know I wouldn’t do anything to actually hurt that beautiful ass. I don’t understand why you wanted to learn how to use a blade in the first place.”
“I told you, to protect myself.” His locker door slammed closed.
Morgan gently grabbed Dorian’s hand, keeping him from walking off. “You can protect yourself.” He tugged on his hand, trying to prompt Dorian to turn around and face him but he didn’t. “You know your magic isn’t going to just up and abandon you one day. Even if it does, you have nothing to worry about.”
Dorian turned on him then, brows furrowed. “How would I have ‘nothing’ to worry about?”
Morgan was determined to change that furious expression into something entirely different, but equally passionate. “Because I definitely won’t abandon you. Ever,” he promised.
With a scoff and a roll of his eyes, Dorian started to turn away again. Morgan reached for his hand, fingers brushing together. “Dorian.”
At the soft murmur of his name, the mage stilled, then turned. “What?” He could feel most of his bluster dissipate at Morgan’s gentle smile. He leaned against the lockers, feeling the cool metal against his back.
“If you want to learn, I’ll teach you. Whichever way you learn best. But you aren’t going to be good right away and you need to know that. You don’t need to be. I’ll never purposely embarrass you or push you past your limit. You are perfect in many ways, but some things just take time, especially when you’re starting from square one.”
Morgan rested a hand on either side of Dorian’s shoulders and lowered his head, brushing his nose against Dorian’s. He knew his Marcher’s brogue could win him over so he lowered his voice, speaking in husky tones. “For example, how long it’s taking you to admit to falling in lo-”
“Kindly. Shut. Up!” Dorian hissed. Slipping his hand through Morgan’s long hair he further silenced him with a kiss. Morgan started to chuckle against his lips until Dorian’s hand tightening in his hair painfully. With a growl, he gave Dorian the attention he deserved.
Dorian broke away after what felt like an eternity, inhaling deeply. “I apologize for lashing out at you. I suppose I’d forgotten what it felt like to be a novice at anything.”
“All is forgiven,” Morgan murmured against Dorian’s lips. “How about a little more sword training?
Dorian’s hand planted on Morgan’s chest, pushing him away. “Amatus…” he sighed, shaking his head, “you really have the worst pick up lines.”
“No, really.” Morgan gestured behind him to the door of the training room. “Actual sword training.” Dorian looked skeptical, but Morgan just stared at him and nodded.
“Oh,” Dorian actually sounded disappointed. “Well now I want the other kind...”

A Whistle-Stop Tour of the Fractures Anthology Pt. 1
Tumblr media
Hey, did I remember to talk about the Fractures anthology? A little bit? Kind of? Not really? Let me tell you what I thought about it.
Overall: I think Fractures is a more practical-to-the-lore anthology than Evolutions was and I like more of the stories in it. A lot of them have concrete connections to other books. I just, you know, am bitter about this era of Halo.
Shadow of Intent slaps because of course it does.
Lessons Learned by Matt Forbeck
This one rolls right out of New Blood which... maybe I'll handle later when I'm shotgunning short facts on books I didn't talk about. Part of New Blood involves a Spartan-IV trainee with insurrection ties going rogue on the space station that serves as S-IV head quarters. During this, Jun-A266 (sole survivor of Noble Team, Chief of Staff of Spartan Operations) got thrown out into space. The short story opens with Tom and Lucy (especially Tom) rescuing him from that.
After this, they are told their new job is to go work security at a human-Sangheili joint research station/city on Onyx-AKA-Trevelyan. They'll be working under Franklin Mendez and Franklin Mendez's second-in-command, a Sangheili woman named Kasha 'Hilot. This is kind of awkward for them because Spartan-IIIs in particular are especially traumatized about Sangheili.
The story wraps up with a UNSC soldier newly stationed here trying to start shit with Kasha for being Sangheili. Tom defends her, a fight breaks out, a knife is pulled, and Tom gets into it on her side. Mendez is extremely not amused with the dude or his friends and sends them packing.
Basically, it's a set up for Legacy of Onyx, which I will get around to in... *squints* after I finish up Bad Blood and go do Retribution. It has the potential to be alright. I've heard it's kind of fun.
What Remains by Morgan Lockhart
Lockhart wrote parts of the background narrative for the Meridian levels of Halo 5, including audio logs. (I haven't gotten around to those.) Thus, it's unsurprising that this one follows Evelyn Collins, the voice you hear calling out in distress because she's alone as Fireteam Osiris leaves Meridian in 5.
This short story is about the grim situation that Evelyn and several other survivors on Meridian are in now that they're down an AI, don't have a way off planet, and there's a glass storm rolling in. They manage to scrap together a transmitter in time to hear Cortana's message and to decide to accept her offer because.... what else is there for them to do but die here?
It's okay, I probably would've had more impact from this one if I'd taken the time to absorb more of the ambient material in 5. Really, the feeling of weary resignation at the end is kind of how I feel about the 4/5 era of Halo lore overall.
Breaking Strain by James Swallow
Swallow has no prior or later contact with Halo material from what I can tell, but he does a pretty good job and I actually like this one. It's 2553. The UNSC Dark was the Night (we're already in form with good Halo names for things) has been stranded on the small backwater colony of Losing Hand (see?) for about a year since a Covenant attack took out their AI, their guns, and most of their command crew and they had no choice but to find a place to come down hard. The helmsman, Leone, has had to take on the role of acting captain.
The locals on Losing Hand resent the UNSC ship for crushing their wind farm (though the UNSC ship now provides power to the town from its engines) and also you know, outer colonies vs UNSC animosity.
The ship was carrying a (very traumatized) Spartan-III: Kevin-A282. The threat the Spartan represents is the main reason the locals haven't tried to seize the Dark was the Night yet, but the secret is that Kevin actually fucked off somewhere down the shore a while ago and has only occasionally been seen since.
Tensions have been rising, but things finally come to a head when a Covenant ship shows up on sensors and everyone panics. Leone and some guys go out to find Kevin to try to talk him into coming back (because if the Covenant comes they're going to need him) but Kevin refuses. Leone's on his own.
Things reach a physical standoff between the locals and the UNSC that is about to come to violence, with the locals ready to try to take the ship.
Then, someone snipes the gun out of their leader's hand.
Kevin came back!
Things are about to get even worse when the Covenant ship comes in for a landing and it turns out that hey guys, the war is over, are y'all like.... good out here??? There are humans and Sangheili on this ship that have been working together, do you guys... need some help...?
This is of course a big relief for everyone. The crew of the Dark was the Night (the ones that want to leave, anyway) gets to go home, the ship is stripped down and left to be used as a power station, supplies are distributed, Kevin might actually get therapy, and Leone decides to stay on Losing Hand to try to protect the colony and help the people (and also he bonded with a local woman during this whole thing, so there's that.)
Promises to Keep by Christie Golden
The only thing I knew about Christie Golden going in is that it's been mentioned to me that she's maybe the best writer in the World of Warcraft novelist stable, which I suppose is not a high honor but (given the direness of the tie-in novel landscape and that I have suffered greatly in the Karen Traviss mines) it gave me some hope.
The good news: I also like this one. If you wanted a coda to the Forerunner saga, here it is.
Bornstellar, Chant-to-Green, Splendid-Dust-of-Ancient-Suns (you know, the young councilor from Cryptum), Growth-Through-Trial-of-Change (a Builder that has respecced as a Lifeworker), and several other Forerunners have been working together to re-seed sapient species throughout the galaxy according to the Librarian's plan. (Also, Bornstellar and Chant had a relationship rooted in being sad about the Librarian but it was kind of not a great thing to build a relationship on so now things are awkward.)
Finally, as they are wrapping things up with the San'Shyuum and preparing for their final intent (to peace out of the Milky Way and live out their lives and die off) Bornstellar, languishing in memories, realizes that he still has that unopened message the Librarian tried to send him at the end of Silentium.
Armed with the terrible knowledge that the Domain is broken and they should probably fix it, and also armed with Splendid-Dust-of-Ancient-Suns having some idea of where they need to go to do it, they go to the capitol. Their main objective is actually to get slipspace crystals so they can leave the Milky Way, but like... you know. If they can fix the Domain while they're in the wreckage of Maethrilian, maybe. We'll see.
They find the entity that's left of the Domain (because, remember, the Domain is actually a precursor thing) and it declares it's going to pass judgment on them, but luckily Bornstellar, Chant, Dust, and Trial escape enough to go fix what they have to fix.
Unfortunately, THE DOMAIN REQUIRES SACRIFICE. Growth-Through-Trial-of-Change gives her life to re-template the Domain (or something, I read this a couple weeks ago and Forerunner stuff is always a bit baroque) and saves everyone by doing that. And that's why the Domain is around again for Cortana to fall into 100,000 years later.
Before they leave the Milky Way, Splendid-Dust-of-Ancient-Suns declares that he wants to stay behind (digitally) to help the Reclaimers when their day finally comes. Splendid-Dust allows himself to be composed into a monitor that will remain with the Ark, and becomes 000 Tragic Solitude.
You can tell this wasn't decided until long after Hunters in the Dark so it kind of doesn't entirely gel, but I'm a glutton for sadness and like what that adds to Tragic Solitude.
Bornstellar and Chant rekindle their thing because they have gone through enough to determine that what they feel is about one another instead of just their shared grief, so good for them.
Fin.
Shadow of Intent by Joseph Staten
STATEN'S BACK, BOYS. Did you miss him? I missed him. Overwhelmingly the longest entry in the anthology, Shadow of Intent was a standalone digitally published novella. (I was going to read it on its own, then I figured out it was in the anthology so I just waited to get around to that.)
It's full of Staten doing alien world building, it feels very classic Halo and has the classic Halo space battles if you like those, and I like it a lot.
It's 2553. Because Sanghelios is One Entire Royal Fuckmess during the blooding years, the Arbiter told Rtas to take Shadow of Intent off to do work far away from home to avoid getting involved (and possibly losing the ship.) This is how the carrier winds up investigating a distress call from a Sangheili colony world that was recently and mysteriously attacked.
There, they find the daughter of a kaidon (because on Rahnelo kids are allowed to know who their fathers are) who is hellbent on revenge against the San'Shyuum she says attacked her home. She convinces Rtas to let her come along for said revenge purposes. (Her name is Tul 'Juran and she's not terribly relevant to the main plot but she's cool and I like her.)
(Another character who's cool but not too important is Stolt, an Unggoy who leads all the Shadow of Intent's Sangheili rangers.)
Meanwhile, some surviving San'Shyuum. The Minister of Preparation and a Prelate (fancy San'Shyuum commando lad) named Tem'Bhetek are working on a plan involving a miniature prototype Halo they found. (They killed Tul's father with it.) The Minister of Preparation intends to capture the Shadow of Intent and to use it to carry the mini Halo to Sanghelios and use it to murder everyone.
Tem'Bhetek, the Prelate, has a particular hatred for Rtas for leading the charge in burning High Charity during the Flood attack. He is plagued by nightmares of trying to rescue his wife and newborn child from the Flood, but in reality he had evacuated the Minister because the Minister told him the other San'Shyuum on High Charity were already dead. (This was a lie.)
When Tem attempts to steal the Shadow of Intent out from under Rtas (not impossible if you do clever space battle things, and also note that the Shadow of Intent is running an absolute skeleton crew these days), Rtas instead manages to capture him, flip him by telling him the Minister lied to him (Rtas was there), and find out about the mini Halo plot.
They all go to try to stop the Minister, which ends with Tem'Bhetek having it confirmed from the Minister's own mouth that he is a lying selfish betraying liar. Tem sacrifices his own life to use a bunch of grenades to blow up the mini Halo and end the Minister's plans (and life.)
The Shadow of Intent returns to another Sangheili colony to lick its wounds, and Rtas tells Thel 'Vadam about what all has gone on. He also notes that Tul 'Juran is super cool, and this is what inspires the Arbiter to be like "hey, we should be letting women join the Swords" and thus we owe her everything.
Also, Thel offers Rtas the opportunity to like. Take a break. Or a vacation. Or even retire if he wants. And he's like "nah bro I'd rather go hunt down bad San'Shyuum (and if I find any good San'Shyuum tell them we're cool.)"
End.
I hope we see Rtas or Tul or literally any aspect of this plot line again, sometime.
The Ballad of Hamish Beamish
Frank O'Connor got a cameo role as a janitor in Forward Unto Dawn and he wrote a weird poem giving that character a "backstory." It's not to my taste in humor and I don't care about it.
....
This post is getting really long.
I'm going to make it two posts. I need plenty of room to yell about the Denning short story that's coming up anyway.

OC Height Chart
I got tagged by @noire-pandora and @cleverblackcat to use this this height chart maker.
I had already figured out how tall or short my OC are but I never made a chart for them, this was a good opportunity to do so.
