thank you for asking dear❤️ welll the experience was traumatizing cause i nearly died not even knowing it was an earthquake but thank god i was saved last minute but what really affected me was seeing how we mean nothing to the people in charge of the country. Children died and of they're still alive they're orphans now. A small village turned into a graveyard since the habitants are all dead, not even one survived! A mother lost her 4 children and her husband. All we can do is thank allah and go back to his way cause this experience really shows how tiny and fragile we are and how our life is short. once again thank you for asking dear

I woke up the morning after the earthquake that hit Morocco at 11: 11 p.m. on September 8, 2023 and wrote this poem while watching this scene:

Morning Meditations

I woke up to a calm sea The haze slowly lifting Unveiling another shore Another continent, other worlds.

Ships sailing languidly Carrying goods, people, and guns.

Men who had spent the night fishing Speaking on their phones Others already swimming A couple, tentatively in love, Dreaming of worlds to come.

Further south, brown dwellings Had collapsed hours before Lives lost in the dark Buried in the rubble Victims of faulty foundations.

The earth shook there And here it stands still.

Echoes of terror in one place Soothing sounds of bliss in another.

An earthquake has sown destruction and devastation in Morocco, where death and injury counts continue to rise as rescue crews dig out people both alive and dead in villages that were reduced to rubble.

Law enforcement and aid workers — both Moroccan and international — have arrived in the region south of the city of Marrakech that was hardest hit by the magnitude-6.8 tremor on Friday night and several aftershocks.

Residents await food, water and electricity, and giant boulders now block steep mountain roads.

Here’s what you need to know:

WHAT ARE THE AREAS MOST AFFECTED?

The epicenter was high in the Atlas Mountains about 70 kilometers (44 miles) south of Marrakech in Al Haouz province.

The region is largely rural, made up of red-rock mountains, picturesque gorges and glistening streams and lakes.

For residents like Hamid Idsalah, a 72-year-old mountain guide from the Ouargane Valley, it is unclear what the future holds.

Idsalah relies on Moroccan and foreign tourists who visit the region due to its proximity to both Marrakech and Toubkal, North Africa’s tallest peak and a destination for hikers and climbers.

“I can’t reconstruct my home. I don’t know what I’ll do. Still, I’m alive so I’ll wait,” he said as rescue teams traversed the unpaved road through the valley for the first time this weekend.

The earthquake shook most of Morocco and caused injury and death in other provinces, including Marrakech, Taroudant and Chichaoua.

WHO WAS AFFECTED?

Of the 2,122 deaths reported as of Sunday evening, 1,351 were in Al Haouz, a region with a population of around 570,000, according to Morocco’s 2014 census.

People speak a combination of Arabic and Tachelhit, Morroco’s most common Indigenous language.

Villages of clay and mud brick built into mountainsides have been destroyed.

Though tourism contributes to the economy, the province is largely agrarian.

And like much of North Africa, before the earthquake, Al Haouz was reckoning with record drought that dried rivers and lakes, imperiling the largely agricultural economy and way of life.

Outside a destroyed mosque in the town of Amizmiz, Abdelkadir Smana said the disaster would compound existing struggles in the area, which had reckoned with the coronavirus pandemic in addition to the drought.

“Before and now, it’s the same,” said the 85-year-old. “There wasn’t work or much at all.”

WHO IS PROVIDING AID?

Morocco has deployed ambulances, rescue crews and soldiers to the region to help assist with emergency response efforts.

Aid groups said the government has not made a broad appeal for help and accepted only limited foreign assistance.

The Interior Ministry said it was accepting search and rescue-focused international aid from Spain, Qatar, Britain and the United Arab Emirates, bypassing offers from French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President Joe Biden.

“We stand ready to provide any necessary assistance for the Moroccan people,” Biden said Sunday on a trip to Vietnam.

WHY IS MARRAKECH HISTORIC?

The earthquake cracked and crumbled parts of the walls that surround Marrakech’s old city, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 12th century.

Videos showed dust emanating from parts of the Koutoubia Mosque, one of the city’s best known historic sites.

The city is Morocco’s most widely visited destination, known for its palaces, spice markets, tanneries and Jemaa El Fna, its noisy square full of food vendors and musicians.

HOW DOES THIS COMPARE TO OTHER QUAKES?

Friday’s earthquake was Morocco’s strongest in over a century but, though such powerful tremors are rare, it isn’t the country’s deadliest.

Just over 60 years ago, the country was rocked by a magnitude-5.8 quake that killed over 12,000 people on its western coast, where the city of Agadir, southwest of Marrakech, crumbled.

That quake prompted changes in construction rules in Morocco, but many buildings, especially rural homes, are not built to withstand such tremors.

There had not been any earthquakes stronger than magnitude 6.0 within 310 miles (500 kilometers) of Friday’s tremor in at least a century, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Northern Morocco experiences earthquakes more often, including tremors of magnitude 6.4 in 2004 and magnitude 6.3 in 2016.

Elsewhere this year, a magnitude 7.8 temblor that shook Syria and Turkey killed more than 21,600 people.

The most devastating earthquakes in recent history have been above magnitude 7.0, including a 2015 tremor in Nepal that killed over 8,800 people and a 2008 quake that killed 87,500 in China.

WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS?

Emergency response efforts are likely to continue as teams traverse mountain roads to reach villages hit hardest by the earthquake.

Many communities lack food, water, electricity, and shelter.

But once aid crews and soldiers leave, the challenges facing hundreds of thousands who call the area home will likely remain.

Members of the Moroccan Parliament are scheduled to convene Monday to create a government fund for earthquake response at the request of King Mohammed VI.

2023-#1: Weirdness in Review: 2023

The last twelve months have spawned a swarm of strange news stories. When the news is at maximum weirdness it seems to come out of the Twilight Zone and involves cryptids, aliens, UFOs, and radical shifts in our understanding of the universe. A classification for these news weirdies is their location: on Earth, in this solar system, or out in the universe somewhere. And 2023 served up weird stories for each of these…

We have previously covered strange lightning and mirages (see 2021-#1: Strange Phenomenon). But in 2023 “earthquake lights” received coverage. Earthquake lights were seen in August in Morocco before the earthquake, and they have been photographed in Peru. Earthquake lights happen before earthquakes occur but only along major fault lines. The prevailing theory is that before an earthquake the extreme pressures along a fault line releases static electricity that travels up interacting with minerals, such as crystals, resulting in the earthquake lights. They may appear in the sky or directly coming out of the ground like ghostly flames. Imagine a mad scientist planning to harness the mysterious energies of earthquake lights…

A second weird news tale was highly publicized: the diminutive alien bodies presented to the Mexican senate. One of those bodies sure looks like a neatly formed and potentially delicious tiramisu. What is not widely known about the tiramisu alien mummies is that they were previously presented to the Peruvian attorney general who studied them and did not eat them, determining exactly how they were recently constructed and what they were made out of - vegetable and animal material, so not tiramisu.

NASA recently announced a potential asteroid impact in 152 years, in September. The asteroid, Bennu, has a 1 in 2,700 chance of striking this planet with the force of twenty-two nuclear bombs, or the equivalent force of 22 billion capybaras. It was announced that the destruction would be the size of Texas, not necessarily that Texas is its target though. Since this has a low chance of happening, there is another weird news story of something much more tangible found on this planet.

This year a new life form was discovered, in the depths of the ocean in Antarctica lurks a Lovecraftian horror. The new species found looks like an alien octopus-jellyfish crossbreed named, “Promachocrinus kerguelensis.” They have 20 arms and an actual photo is below. Simply put, the aboleth, a dungeons and dragons monster, has been discovered to be real.

The second category of weird news stories is located within the solar system but off this planet. These days constant discoveries are in the news. Recently detected lightning on Venus might be caused by meteorites, a magnetic field effect, something unknown, or just might be lightning. A moon of Jupiter, Europa, was found to have carbon meaning that the oceans of this moon could have life. What has not been found in the solar system has always been in the news but covered a lot in 2023: a hidden planet. Nibiru is the name of the hidden planet some claim is in our solar system, perhaps on an opposite orbit as the Earth, blocked by the sun. Such a planet could have the same elements as the Earth, an atmosphere, water, and life. What if all these tin can flying saucers seen in the 1950’s that couldn’t survive interstellar travel are really spacecraft from a hidden planet within our own solar system, from a secret alien race that watches us.

The third category for weirdies is out in the universe beyond this solar system. It is a good time to be alive to learn about these discoveries. About a month ago it was announced that gases were detected on a planet 110 light years away that are only produced by plankton. Yes, it sure seems that in 2023 life on another planet has been found, on a water world. We can only hope that a flood of data comes in the future about this planet, named K2-18b.

Just in the last few days a major discovery was made within the Orion Nebula. 540 free floating planets were discovered, just wandering about in outer space without stars. 80 of these planets are Jupiter-sized and are gravitationally bound to each other, planetary duos. These 80 planets have been named, “Jupiter Mass Binary Objects,” or JuMBOs. It is recommended to sharpen that telescope image on these objects, after all, don’t animals travel in pairs? Didn’t the Star Wars series, Ahsoka, just include giant space-dwelling lifeforms, giant whales named Purrgil?

In 2023 the Webb telescope produced images that show galaxies and black holes existing too early in the history of the universe. The Webb telescope has seen back so far it may be starting to pick up supermassive dark matter stars at the outer fringes of the universe the size of small galaxies, yes - stars the size of galaxies. It seems to suggest that the Big Bang was not the start of the universe. Maybe the Big Bang was just a chain of supermassive dark matter stars all exploding. Maybe the universe is much older and more mysterious than we can imagine. A few supermassive dark matter stars could have survived and are at the fringes of the universe right now driving the expansion of the universe.

All this in one year! This year they even found a giant question mark in outer space. Who knows what weirdies will be found in the next year? Unfortunately the statement, “who knows what the future may bring?” is now a false statement. That’s because this year computer models predicted that in about 250 million years from now, mammals will go extinct on this planet: and that means humans. In 250 million years all of the continents will form a supercontinent, Pangaea Ultima, resulting in the temperature rising significantly. This, of course means that the reptiles will rise once more, and that the dinosaurs will eventually re-evolve and therefore ruling the Earth before us and after us…. Wow, 2023 has really delivered some weird news, what a great year!

On 8 September 2023 at 23:11 DST, an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.9 and maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent) struck Morocco's Marrakesh–Safi region. The earthquake's epicenter was located 73.4 km southwest of Marrakesh, near the town of Ighil and the Oukaïmeden ski resort in the Atlas Mountains. It occurred as a result of shallow oblique-thrust faulting beneath the mountain range. At least 2,862 deaths were reported, with most occurring outside Marrakesh. Damage was widespread, and historic landmarks in Marrakesh were destroyed.
