What do you think the boys would've done on their last nights with their significant others before joining the military?
Some of these are last nights, others are full days. Also only Taes has explicit smut mention, although most mention sex in some fashion
Please send me asks to keep me motivated while I'm off work! Thirsty thoughts, Most likely to, reactions, life updates, and general gibberish welcomed!!
Namjoon:
I think Namjoon would've wanted a quiet night. He was probably stuck at work trying to finish plans on that Instagram account that's still posting and maybe fiddling with the album we know he started. But he would have tried his hardest to put it down and return home by nine to spend time with his loved one. His partner would be waiting for him with a simple takeaway on the table and maybe a TV show they had been watching together queued up. They'd stay cuddled on the couch for the longest time. They'd maybe fall around but not get anywhere (Something Namjoon regrets by day 3 in the barracks), maybe they intended to have sex one last time before he left but neither wanted to acknowledge it was actually the last time. He would talk about how this was ridiculous, it's not like they'd be 18 months without one another, just a couple of months at a time is all... And then he'd get sad and introspective. They'd fall asleep on the sofa because going to bed would bring their last night to an end and Namjoon doesn't want to willingly relinquish that time.
Seokjin:
I think he hired out a restaurant he and his partner like, maybe even their first date restaurant. The partner actually panicked that Jin was going to propose the night before he left and was ready to yell at him if he pulled out a ring. Jin sets up multiple proposal cliches throughout the evening giving his partner a heart attack each time while he acts nonchalant about it, pretending he doesn't know why they are getting worked up. This is stuff like a jewellery box on the table (It's a necklace), A gem in the champagne (It's tiny ice), He kneels by the table (and ties his shoe). They take a long walk by the river after dinner, his partner increasingly exasperated but still very fond. He finally does pull out a ring, but he insists it's only a promise ring and the real ring will be given to them on June 14th 2024 (Doesn't want to share the anniversary). The evening probably ended with some very slow, heavy eye-contact, love-making
Yoongi:
Disclaimer - I'm not 100% sure if Yoongi had to go anywhere for any length of time... but this is written as if he were doing the same as the other boys.
He cooked dinner, something he is gonna claim is simple, but he took all day to make it. He also lay the table with a white tablecloth, dimmed all the lights and set out candles. Flower petals lead you through different stations of the apartment. First appetizers and cocktails on the sofa so his partner can talk about their day, then to the table for the main course, to the bathroom where bubbly and strawberries await next to a warm bath for two, and finally to bed for dessert. Which actually meant dessert, there's a snack platter of sweets in the centre of the bedspread and a movie queued up on the TV. the movie wasn't really watched... but the thought was there.
Hoseok:
I feel like Hobi made an entire day out of it, he set aside time to make sure he only had his significant other to focus on and made sure his SO did the same so they were uninterrupted. Then he locked them into their apartment, only opening the door to bring in food deliveries. The day starts with lazy morning sex. Then breakfast. Then lazy shower sex. Then maybe some TV time, where his hands remain firmly on his partner as if they are going to disappear the second he lets them go. The SO convinces him to go for a walk at lunchtime, they hold hands the entire time. Hoseok has them sit in his lap when they return home. Just wants to be permanently close. The third round of sex is definitely more driven, like he has a point to prove and doesn't want his SO to forget what exactly it is they are going to be waiting so patiently for.
Jimin:
Jimin took his SO back to his home town a couple of days before. Maybe spent some time with his family in Busan, had a very nostalgic craving for his parents cooking and took his SO along for the ride. They do stuff he liked to do as a kid, visiting places that he wouldn't be easily recognised. He's anxious, and jumpy, and clingy a lot of the time. He keeps asking his partner if they are going to be okay when really it's his own insecurity. Jimin had someone drive them in a nice car back to Seoul in the early afternoon so they had the evening together, they probably fooled around in the car as he tried to keep himself occupied. He let them hold his hand while he had his head shaved, needing the familiar reassurance. He took a break to show Army his hair, but the SO is hiding behind the camera. Then the evening is spent quietly, wrapped together to enforce the fact that they aren't going anywhere.
Taehyung:
He came up with so many different plans for what he wanted to do that by the time the day came around he hadn't actually implemented any of them. And sure he is Taehyung of BTS, if he had made a couple last minute phonecalls he could have made anything happen but he decides the lack of plans is exactly what was meant to be. He runs on pure unplanned whims and ends up taking his SO to absolutely anywhere that pops into his mind in the most chaotic fashion. They go to the movies (Something everyone's already seen so no one else is there) (they may spend most of it making out in the back). They go to an arcade (An old buddy of Tae's owns it and makes sure they get an hour uninterrupted). They eat lunch at the SO's favourite restaurant. Eventually, they go home and Taehyung spends hours between his lover's thighs, trying to immortalise the taste of them in his brain before he no longer has the access he so desperately craves. They probably also have a lot of sex. He falls asleep insisting on cockwarming, convincing his partner the UTI will be worth it with the Tata mic face.
Jungkook:
It takes a while for his SO to convince him to do anything at all because "What's wrong with in my arms in my bed forever?" (And he's right, nothing wrong with that and if his SO don't want it I volunteer). He convinced them to snuggle back down with him at least three times until lunch rolled around and they insisted he get up with them to go somewhere. They never end up leaving the house. Every time his SO goes to put on a shirt, Jungkook grabs it and throws it somewhere it can't be easily recovered. There was one in the sink with the dirty dishes, one mixed with the already dirty laundry, and another hanging from a light fixture they would both need a ladder to reach. Eventually, the SO has to relent because they won't have any shirts to say goodbye in the following day. So they succumb to his wishes (Although they make him go out to fetch food first). He holds on to them possessively throughout the day, pulling as much of them against him as is reasonable at any given time. I fully believe Jungkook would crawl into the skin of an SO if he thought it was possible.

Look back at the Highlights of Animation 2023!
Happy New Year, everyone! While we officially begin our journey of 2024, I wanted to talk about and look back at the highlights from 2023, mainly that of the media/animation:
First off, The Owl House released the last two episodes of their 3rd and final season (For the Future and Watching and Dreaming), and boy was it such a great end to a brilliant show (especially as the first words of each special spell out 'Thanks for Watching' as it is a message from Dana and the crew thanking us for watching the show!
Tumblr media
Disney and Warner Bros also celebrated their 100 year anniversaries, as both companies were found on the same year! (1923-2023) Not to mention, Disney released a special animated short, Once Upon a Studio, to help celebrate the 100 years of Disney animation and magic, with about 500 characters of Disney's animated feature films, shorts and other various works coming together.
Tumblr media
We also got some big movies, such as the 2nd instalment of Spider-Verse, Elemental, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem and Wish (Best of luck if any one of them win the Oscars best animated feature this year!)
Tumblr media
Speaking of films, only that, the Super Mario Bros. Movie was also released as well! And while it's true that there's some mixed feedback about it (especially about Chris Pratt voicing Mario), it was a great film that I know many video game/Mario fans were waiting to see.
Tumblr media
Also, the long awaited Five Night's at Freddy's movie was finally released (I'm not a fan of that game series, or horror films and/or games, but I know that fans are happy to get to see it).
Tumblr media
This year has also been a big year for Indie Animation, as we got more episodes of Helluva Boss and Murder Drones, with a cast of new characters.
Tumblr media
And new Indie Animated shows as we were introduced to Lackadaisy and the Amazing Digital Circus, giving us what we're to expect in future!
Tumblr media
We also finally got news of Hazbin Hotel, as it will be released on Prime Video on January! After 4 years of waiting, the grand opening is near!
Tumblr media
Also, several more great shows came to an end, such as anime series Pokemon and Sailor Moon, as the former concluded Ash and Pikachu's incredible journey and latter had the final instalment of the Sailor Moon Crystal series in the form of the Sailor Moon Cosmos 2-part film.
And lastly, Hilda, another of my fav shows, had it's most fantastic heartwarming and satisfying ending with it's 3rd and final season after 5 years of adventures with 3 seasons and a movie in-between!
Tumblr media
So happy about the animation lot we got this year, and I can't wait for what's in store for the animation of 2024!

B. T.: Rare interview with Ukraine's First Lady: There are things he doesn't say to me
Tumblr media
Jeppe Elkjær Andersen
Apr 16, 2024 - 19:04
They see each other once a week at most - and there's a lot he never tells her.
She lives in an extremely special marriage. And now shares some rare details about life with Ukraine's world-famous president.
After more than two years, the war has left its mark not only on Ukraine, but also on its people.
No one has symbolized the Ukrainian people more than President Zelenskyj and his wife Olena. She admits that the hard times have also affected her as a person. She does so in a candid interview with B.T.
"War changes everyone," she says, looking up with sad eyes.
Before the Russian invasion of her native Ukraine, the former screenwriter suddenly found herself in an unfamiliar situation.
Her husband, the famous comedian Volodymyr Zelenskyj, had become President of Ukraine. Now she had to take on the role of First Lady of all Ukraine.
A completely different life.
However, the title of First Lady took on a whole new meaning on February 24, 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine.
Suddenly, her husband was world-famous and she had to find a way to be there for an entire nation that was in a fight for its life. A fight for its existence. A fight for her soul.
Both she and President Zelenskyj had to show strength in an almost impossible situation.
"You can't be brave when everyone around you is discouraged. It's a fairy tale," says Olena Zelenska, who B.T. met with Berlingske at a hotel in Copenhagen during the First Lady's second visit to Denmark.
"The image that people see of us is the result of a lot of work, where we try to communicate to the world that the Ukrainian President will lead the way in diplomacy. We are just more visible than others. But the real heroes are the Ukrainians who are defending us on the front line right now," she elaborates.
The first weeks and months of the Russian invasion were filled with despair in Ukraine.
Then came a period where Ukraine beat back the Russian invasion forces in several places.
But over the past several months, the situation has become difficult again.
First, a long-awaited offensive did not lead to the breakthrough many had hoped for.
And most recently, Russia has pushed Ukraine to the front line, while Ukrainian infrastructure is being bombed almost daily.
Morale is hard to keep up. But Olena Zelenska and her husband have a job. They must remain positive and hopeful.
Here they look inwards, says Olena Zelenska.
"I remember the first months of the war with the defense of the Kyiv region, when the people took matters into their own hands. It gave hope to the Ukrainian people."
She continues:
"Now we have to find our strength again. We must find it in our history, in our art, in our culture. Because we are up against an empire that enslaved us for hundreds of years. Now we have a chance to be free of it, forever. And that, I think, is what keeps us going."
The job of a First Lady in an invaded country can obviously be difficult.
Olena Zelenska doesn't see her husband as often as she would like.
Maybe once a week.
Here, they try to do things together that make time feel more normal.
"Sometimes... when things are difficult, I ask him to tell me something optimistic, something. And then he might tell me about a new military aid package. As a civilian, I don't understand how it will help us, but it often makes me happy," says Olena Zelenska.
She makes it clear that she doesn't get involved in things that are only for the president and his cabinet.
"That's how it is. The president is the president. He doesn't tell me about his plans, his deals or state secrets."
However, when there is the rare occasion that they do have time to spend some private time together as a couple, they have a fairly simple thing they resort to in order to cheer each other up.
"We like to watch movies together. For some reason, we like to watch movies from our childhood that we haven't seen in years - stupid comedies - just to relax. Just have an hour where you don't think."
As a family, when they get together, there are always private matters that need to be discussed. Just like any other family.
"We always have something to talk about. Our family, our children. There are always family things that we need to talk about, solve some important problems, make decisions," says Olena Zelenska.
But it's not just talk they take care of. Both Olena and Volodymyr have worked with humor in their previous lives.
And that's why it's important for them to laugh.
Even if the situation is unreal and brutal.
"We try to help each other remember to laugh. Somehow to laugh. But we don't always succeed," says Olena Zelenska.
And here she and her husband can draw on the Ukrainian history and culture that Olena Zelenska believes is so important for the survival of the nation.
"The Ukrainian poet Lesya Ukrainka described in a famous poem how to 'laugh through tears'. We try to laugh, not cry," says Olena Zelenska.

Approachable And Loving
“One sitting on the throne… He who was sitting was like a jasper stone… a sardius in appearance… there was a rainbow around the throne, like an emerald in appearance. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones… upon the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting… Out from the throne come flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder… there were seven lamps of fire burning… the seven Spirits of God… before the throne there was something like a sea of glass, like crystal… in the center and around the throne.” Revelation 4:2-6NASB
In case you’ve not figured it out yet, God sits resplendent, impressive in heaven. Francis Chan asked everyone in his book, ‘Crazy Love,’ to ponder just how all-important God is— Almighty God— absolute Ruler and Creator of everything everywhere. Our Creator spoke, “…Let there be light…” Genesis 1:3. Scientists are still discovering new galaxies. Were these galaxies truly newly discovered, or are God’s words actively creating new galaxies now?
Imagine with me, we’ve just entered the throne room of Almighty God. What are the first words we’d say? Since Chan posed this question, I’ve considered it with a lot of thought.
Growing up in the holiness religion, Yahweh was this huge formidable being for whom we had to walk perfectly before in order to be loved. Mess things up, sin big-time and always look over the shoulder wondering when He was going to zap you with sickness and harm. That God was frightening and unapproachable. My puny mind had difficulty absorbing the sights of heaven or imagining what I’d do faced with such awesomeness should I actually get there..
In the book made movie, ‘Heaven Is For Real,’ Todd Burpo’s father deals with the reality of heaven. He’s heard about this God of love all his life. The subtler teaching of approaching a God of judgment had him with that same awaiting of being zapped, that I experienced. Faced with explaining the unexplainable God, Burpo was bereft of words. Sense, logic, nor previously known experiences didn’t fit into any of the unexplainable events. Eventually Burpo settled on the fact: God can do things however He pleases for He is THE Almighty.
My thoughts have come through many difficult places in life. Although I revere God in His awesomeness, I’ve needed an approachable and loving God, which I’ve discovered through reading and studying His Bible. Paul taught God will be what I need, although not always financially. Philippians 4:19KJV “…my God will supply all your needs…. in Christ Jesus.”
In prayer I’ve come to the knowledge He’s our Almighty knowing everything God. Prayer isn’t presenting a honey-do list to God; nor is it pulling the handle of a heavenly vending machine. Worship, praise, surrender, admitting how much we need Him while seeking the Source of all wisdom and answers are all parts of prayer. I’ve learned while surrendering everything to Almighty, I must allow Him to become God over those needs. Taking those needs back isn’t trusting Him to be all His Word says He is.
David understood my feelings: “Since I am afflicted and needy, Let the Lord be mindful of me. You are my Help and my Deliverer…” Psalm. 40:17NASB. As I face the largest, most difficult place in my life, I’ve had to pray— ‘God You are my “Help and my Deliverer.” This mountain is more than I can endure.’
How would your prayers change, if you stood in the astounding throne room of Almighty God, as you prayed? What would you say or think? Would your knee willingly bow admitting your need? One day it will. “…That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance,” Isaiah 45:23KJV. Now or later? It’s your choice. You choose.
LET’S PRAY: Father thank You for being approachable, even as You are the Most High God. Teach us to admit our need for You as we revere You, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray.

As an avid fan of Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk setting I cannot help but just look at the year 2024 in the US and be like: Yea Mike, you were a little off and a bit ahead, or a lot, but like holy fuck the internet and cyber tech has been so misused and is now the tool of corporations to fuck us over.
First off, phone phishing??? I have spam filters and still get 2-5 phishing phone calls a day that, if I do pick up, try to trick me into giving away my voice and data. This has become so common that literally no one I know answers a call unless they know the number or are actively awaiting a call from an unknown number (for job interviews, appointments, etc).
We, on the regular, deal with AI that is meant to steal our voices, names, and other cruical data. This has brought us to manage unknown numbers the same way we manage superstitious entities such as fae in fairy tales. How fucked up is that?
Streaming, once an alternative to and then a replacement of video stores, has come to replace TV and is severely less consumer friendly as access to media has become severely fragmented by the corporate nature of these services. I won't even get into the decreasing quality of popular media, just simply look at Disney to see the shift.
Social media? Something that was meant to connect family, friends, and community? Yea, that's now a sespool of ads, has algorithms that will try to feed you misinformation, and has been made into an addictive drug meant to keep people seperated and inactive in the freetime that we have.
There's come a large group of people in my generation (gen Z) and those who came before us (Millenials), who simply do not pay for our media. Piracy of old and new movies, shows, videogames, music, and even books has simply become the norm because we cannot afford to pay for it, and what we can access on the corpo sites has been severely reduced in quality by easily evaded ads.
And what do I have to say to that? We live in a capitalist society and we gotta play the game to live until we break it. They can't create a product that we're willing to use? Boohoo, someone outcompeted them by providing us with a product that removes ads that only serve to degrade, seperate, or comodify us. Corporations act like they deserve our subservience, money, and labor -- they don't.
Moving on from just entertainment and social media, search engines, our phones, and nearly everything we have to access the internet is used to track us and sell our data so that we may be comodified more efficiently by the corpos. We may say "I'm gonna google that", but many of us have stopped using google and other engines because of how bad they are at actually giving us good results. Task specific search engines and ones that don't track or sell our data (like duckduckgo) have become common place.
Also, just, most people do not own their own media? Some people don't own a single movie, show, song, book, videogame, or any other digital media and instead opt to stream them (ie spotify) or purchase access to them (ie steam). I know very few people in my generation who own a cd player or any type of physical music, and it just throws me.
The internet and digital tech could have been so much better and can do so much good, but no, it's used for capitalism instead.
Wage theft, job theft, piracy, and phishing.
Down with the capitalist system, let's bring on a future wherein our art, knowledge, social forums, and automatons are not weaponized against us so that we may share the resources we need to survive, thrive, and live fulfilling lives.

A dark base colour. Very dark. Black, I dare to say, but it presents shades of dark blue here and there. Scattered in a natural even manner were a few clouds and, at last, sitting in the centre, amidst a bed of shimmering white dots, was the moon, shining in all its might.
It was a fresh spring day night. The atmosphere was changing. The environment welcomed a highly awaited scent of blooming flowers from the gardens, the vases on the balconies and the trees outlining the streets. As the fresh breeze blew, it took away all the residues of the winter season: the cold, the dead leaves on the side of the road, all the ashes of the wood that had been burnt for the heating up and all the smoke it'd produced.
The night was very bright. The moonlight put to shame the few lampposts along the road. The rays were so strong they worked as a perfect night light for the townspeople. As the breeze blew, wind chimes rang throughout and their sound vibration penetrated the ears in the most pleasing of ways.
Just like in movies, this was background decoration, the setting in which the story starts from a wider point of view only to shrink and focus closer, on a tinier scale. Uninteresting background details that had little meaning to the lead characters―something to just occasionally comment on.
They had each other, confined in a cosy bedroom, in a comfortable environment. The bright moon and the stars went unnoticed as Daphne took an old book from her little personalized bookshelf.
The room was dim because she hated turning on the major light when she could see perfectly with her lamp. She had one on her desk and one on her nightstand. The lighting was golden, the room was warm and he was there, shirtless, with ruffled hair and just the trousers of his pyjamas but he was there and that was all that mattered to her.
She wore a matching sleep outfit, shorts and a tank top. Hurriedly walking back onto the carpet and off the freezing tiles of her room, she joined him. He was sitting at the end of her bed. Body leaning backwards on his arms with legs that only spread more to welcome her to sit which she did.
"You see this here?" she began losing the leather rope tied around the book, "It belonged to my granny but she gifted it to me last year as a Christmas present". He didn't immediately respond, at least not verbally. He wrapped his arms around her with ease and perked his chin on her shoulders welcoming her in a warm embrace. "It's a flowers book, she called it. It has pretty much every flower she has ever grown or collected in her life".
"I thought your grandma sells greens at the town square," his velvet voice came through from right next to her ear causing a wave of chills to run from head to toe. "Yes, she does but she also used to collect a lot of flowers. In fact, she loved them, loves them still, and she has them all around her place," his only reply was tightening the hug because no matter how close he could be to her, it was never close enough. "And guess what I found here?"
"What?"
"I'd insist you guessed but you wouldn't so..." she quickly muttered but he heard her and simply replied by tickling her. "So, I found... me,"
"You!"
"Yeah, me! The flower Daphne" from his point of view, he could see her cheek swell as she smiled causing him to smile right after, unconsciously. "You didn't know you bore the same name as a flower?"
"No, I mean yes but not this flower. I know that my name in Greek means 'Laurel', a plant from the mythological story of Daphne and Apollo. It's the sole reason you call me Lauri," she turned to face him. The distance is almost nonexistent. He went in first and left a peck on her lips that proceeded into multiple ones. Lips. Cheek. Neck. Shoulder blade.
"Do you like your namesake flower?"
"I've got to be honest with you and disagree. I mean, it's also an evergreen plant like the Laurel but it doesn't sound as special. Lori does though," now it was his turn to smile. From the exterior, it looked subtle but his insides were jumping and somersaulting. She probably could hear his heart thumping against her back for how much it was pressed against his chest. "But Daphne is just as beautiful".
She shrugged and denied that. "And, besides, it just reminds me of the sad fate of the nymph, you know. I completely get that Apollo wasn't in his right state of mind because of Cupid but it's still sad," he totally could agree with her, not the sad part but surely the mental part, yeah. That's how he felt whenever she was close. Whether she was right next to him, farther away in the same room or building, sharing the same air with him whenever they kissed, in his thoughts all the time or when he was inside of her, the only thing he could think about was how close he was to losing his mind for good. So good. Heavenly good. Marvellous. Perfect. That is what she is anyway.
"You know... Daphne was a beautiful nymph and the personification of the laurel which is, as you know, an evergreen plant. I don't think of her fate as sad. First, she wished it to herself," The look she gave him had him chuckling, "Second, an evergreen plant never dies. It lives in the foreverness of its beauty," just like you, he wanted to add but surely she could read that from his eyes.
His eyes glowed when they were on her. Stars start shimmering in the chocolate brown colour of his iris. It was hard to break eye contact because the view was breathtaking like fireworks on New Year's night. She couldn't help herself from catching red shades on her cheeks. She didn't mind it anymore. She'd just smile through it. He wasn't shy about his feelings so she wasn't going to be any different.
A little giggle came out of her as she broke eye contact and started fiddling with the corner of the book. He smiled, reading through her body language like it was his favourite novel.
Never could he have thought of reaching this point where he'd have her in his arms like this, in a moment like this, doing things like this. Back then, the only assurance he had was that she could make his heart flutter in ways itself didn't know about: her smile, her face whenever she was focused on reading or just her simple presence.
Oh, God. No way she's real.
Before they could get here, it seemed she didn't know of his existence and yet he felt like she was watching every one of his moves and he had to be perfect, absolutely perfect for her, just her. That's the only thing she deserved for being perfection incarnate.
From the day he set eyes on her, he'd decided that everything he'd do was going to be just for her. The efforts paid off anyway.
There's nothing more beautiful than knowing that the person you love, loves you just as much-he'd say even more but he doubts she could ever love him more than he loves her because he loved her so much, maybe too much, but it's all for a good cause.
Her smile whenever she came out to go to school or went back in from school. Perfect. The sound of her voice whenever she came up to him during lunch break―oh, and let's not talk about how adorable she was whenever she happily hopped up to him while at it. Perfect. Her face. Oh so perfect. He could stare at her face all day and never get tired, never get uninterested. It was like a TV series with an infinite amount of seasons that got better as they went on. A perfect TV series. He could fully focus with her around and certainly just on her and nothing else―he could barely hear what she'd be talking about because he'd be busy watching every single change in her facial expression and never get bored. Boredom went out of his life the day she came in.
If he could, he'd write poems on how pretty she looked, on how perfect she was. He'd probably make the next Catullus or even better, he'd dare say. Everyone would love to read about her and how she makes him feel. He even wonders how she isn't loved, worshipped in fact, by everyone but he's glad he's the only one whom she hops to whenever class is dismissed, the only one to have her cheeks explore all possible shades of red, the only one whose arms she'd willingly fall asleep in between.
The silence that sat with them was comfortable, to say the least. It felt like a bigger and warmer hug embracing them and encapsulating them in their world.
"Talking about evergreens, my faves are these," she turned the pages while maintaining the same height as his face so that when she looked back up, the eye contact was restored, "Gardenias,"
"Oh. So pretty. Beautiful".

Following its much-anticipated release, the long-awaited second installation of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune adaptation has proven itself a sci-fi spectacle that must be experienced to be believed.
It’s an outrageous combination of awe-inspiring cinematography, adept writing, and the talents of an all-star cast topped off by a score by veteran composer Hans Zimmer. The result: a feast for the senses that presents the stark realization that films on a scale this epic only come around once or twice a generation.
For those unfamiliar with the source material, the full extent of how truly epic this is may be lost. Part of the beauty of Dune is that Villeneuve simplified the story in such a way that it can be understood by moviegoers with no connection whatsoever to author Frank Herbert’s novel, or ever-having-seen the adaptations by David Lynch or SyFy (f/k/a Sci Fi). Within this simplification, the story of Dune doesn’t become reductive, nor are essential plot points lost. Like all adaptations, there are components lost, however even compared to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings it can be argued that fewer creative liberties have been taken, and the ones that have been are worthy of discussion.
Some of these changes are adaptations inherent to the modernization of source material written by a white man in the 1960s. While science fiction has arguably been a haven for progressive ideas, it still faces the limitations of the author's society and the popular sentiments of their time.
Environmentalism, non-traditional relationships, the loss of innocence, and the power of femininity are all topics brought to life by Frank Herbert in his original novel–adeptly at times, sloppily in others. Decades later, Villeneuve irons out some of the flaws: the white savior narrative, the depiction of women, and the dreadful attempts to depict witch children.
These changes along with the skillful dedication to a remarkable piece of science fiction create what will undoubtedly be looked upon as a classic in due time, yet has been met with some degree of controversy for its depiction–or lack thereof of one group.
Created in their image, the Fremen were shaped after those of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), with the Islamic faith making up aspects of their religion and the Middle East serving as the very essence of Arrakis. Yet in casting, MENA actors were notably absent from these roles, and the focus on much of the Fremen culture was notably absent, leaving many to question why.
Dune’s Roots in the Middle East
Written in 1965, Dune is considered one of the most remarkable science-fiction books of all time. Part of this significance is because, in 1965, it was a book that attained popularity while being so fervently against the cliches present in normal bestsellers: moral absolutes, Eurocentrism, and Western imperialism.
For over a decade, we have now come to cherish and normalize media that centers around morally gray and ambiguous characters. We actively seek out things that de-center white, straight, and cisgender narratives. Yet in 1965, a world wherein the United States had barely de-segregated, homosexuality was outlawed across most of the world, and Christian colonialism efforts still ran rampant across many nations? A book challenging the status quo was impactful.
The representation of MENA culture is intrinsic to everything that Dune is, from its language to its scenery to the music present in Villeneuve’s adaptations. Set primarily on the desert world of Arrakis, Herbert based the topography of the planet on regions of the Pacific Northwestern United States, yet its allegorical implications are clear.
Arrakis is home to melange or “spice”, a heavily-coveted resource that grants extended longevity, bestows metaphysical abilities, and fuels interstellar travel. The latter is perhaps the most commercially beneficial of the three, and drives colonization of Arrakis, as well as the oppression and subsequent eradication of its Indigenous peoples.
Within his writing, Herbert created a clear mirror of our own world: a desert region, plagued by war, aggression, and despoilment of the environment all for the sake of natural resources. In our own world, that resource is oil, and our Arrakis is the Middle East.
Arriving just as environmental advocacy began to take off in the 1970s, The History Channel states “Many environmentalists interpreted Dune as a critique of the oil industry, with Herbert’s friend Willis E. McNelly writing that the empire’s reliance on spice can “be construed as a thinly veiled allegory of our world’s insatiable appetite for oil and other petroleum products” (Greenspan 2024). Perhaps more salient are the linguistics of Dune, which are directly composed of Arabic words. Throughout the book, both the Fremen, the Indigenous peoples of Arrakis as well as other factions of the world are described using Arabic language. Manvar Singh writes:
“The language with the greatest influence in “Dune” is Arabic. In the novel, the Fremen use at least eighty terms with clear Arabic origins, many of them tied to Islam. The Fremen follow istislah (“natural law”) and ilm (“theology”). They respect karama (“miracle”) and ijaz (“prophecy”), and are attentive to ayat (“signs”) and burhan (“proof”) of life. They quote the Kitab al-Ibar, or “Book of Lessons,” an allusion to the encyclopedia of world history penned by the fourteenth-century Arab historian Ibn Khaldun. Central characters are dignified with Arabic names. The colossal sandworms are called shai-hulud (“thing of eternity”). Paul Atreides’s sister is Alia (“exalted”). Paul himself is known as Muad’Dib, an epithet that resembles the Arabic word for teacher (mu’addib), and he is fabled to be the Lisan al-Gaib, translated in the book as “Voice of the Outer World” but which, in modern Arabic, means something closer to “Tongue of the Unseen.”
Then of course comes the music, composed by industry titan Hans Zimmer who broke his longstanding alliance with director Christopher Nolan to focus on Dune and Dune: Part Two. In creating his score, Zimmer explored a full range of instruments in a way he claimed he had not since scoring The Lion King. Utilizing vocalists, an array of culturally diverse instruments, and spending ample time listening to the sounds of the desert, he synthesized the music together to intentionally create a soundtrack intended to mimic the experience of a spice-induced trip in a desert sandstorm, embraced by the energy of the divine feminine.
An Absence of MENA
With the depth of these roots in Middle Eastern culture, it would stand to reason that Dune would feature a sizeable cast. In addition to the Arabic language, Fremen religion heavily mirrors Islam, and while there are certainly Caucasian converts–we are focusing on a war for Arrakis and its Indigenous peoples.
Upon first glance at the Fremen in the first installation of Dune, we see a spattering of brown and black faces. Most notable are actress Zendaya who is biracial, and Javier Bardem, who is Spanish. Further introduction to the rest of the Fremen reveals similar casting choices among billed actors.
It’s straightforward: “Despite the film's obvious inspirations, there are no leading actors of Middle Eastern or North African heritage.” (Shah, 2024)
And why does this matter? When we beg the question of the difference between appropriation and appreciation, the deliberation includes questions about participation. Without the participation of the cultures involved, representation warps into fetishization at best, and appropriation at worst.
Dune is a tale that warns us about the harms of colonialism, environmental despoilment, and religious extremism. Villeneuve’s version takes care to approach the topic of colonialism with extra caution, approaching painting the Fremen not as a singular unit that can easily be converted by the right white savior, but as a multitude of people with different beliefs. Some fundamentalists believe deeply in their faith and follow the direction of Paul and the prophecy instilled (falsely) by the Bene Gessirit. Then there are the detractors like Chani who have seen attempts at colonialism before, and who shy away from religion for that exact region. They reject Paul’s so-called place as the Chosen One–and any outsider who should lead them.
To make these changes shows consideration on Villeneuve’s part. To fail to recognize the importance of casting actors of Middle Eastern and North African descent in a story directly inspired by a culture based on the Middle East and North Africa shows a distinct lack of it.
A New Decade of MENA Representation
So, why such a prolific absence of MENA representation when it would truly make an impact? We need to examine two factors 1.) the overall distancing from Islamic culture within Villeneuve’s adaptation, and 2.) how filmmaking in a post 9/11 world has changed the representation of Islamic characters.
As an adaptation of Herbert’s novel, Villeneuve takes the traditional liberties with the source material that a director is known for in bringing a book to the big screen. The core tenants remain, and many of the most important phrases and elements are retained. Yet to make the adaptation accessible to audiences unfamiliar with previous adaptations or the book it has been simplified.
This simplification allows Villeneuve to pour energy into enhancing other aspects of the film. He drastically expands upon the female characters within the film, giving them purpose outside of appeasing Paul, bewitching men, or narrating his life.
With adaptation comes a loss of the “finer details”. In addition to the distinct lack of MENA actors, there is a drastic reduction in the language, and of course, scenes depicting Fremen's way of life and culture. These include rites of inheritance, polygyny (not to be confused with polyamory), and the decidedly not-Islamic-inspired ritual orgy that occurs following Jessica’s confirmation as the new Mother Superior of the tribe.
These departures (the orgy notwithstanding, undoubtedly shed without a thought to maintain the film's PG-13 rating) are but a few of the cultural aspects sanitized from a story showcasing Arabic inspiration. Though it’s impossible to diminish it completely. Looking back through Villeneuve’s background, we can speculate on his reasons for this and perhaps consider whether it was done with intent.
Following the September 11th attacks, Hollywood faced years of missteps in the representation of MENA characters onscreen, who were then stereotyped in the roles of jihadists, an imminent threat to the West for years to come. It didn’t matter whether the film took place in the past or present, the ideals were functionally the same.
A notable example is Zack Snyder’s 300, adapted from Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same name. Published in 1998, Snyder brought the film to life in 2006, where it received mixed critical reviews, and uproar internationally for its depiction of Iranians in the Spartan and Persian Battle at Thermopylae.
Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro portrays the antagonist King Xerxes as an effeminate gold-painted and pompous self-proclaimed God-king who seeks to drive forward a kingdom of sexual slavery. Leonidus, portrayed by Gerard Butler and his 300 men stand fierce to beat back Xerxes' soldiers and defend the good people of Sparta from slavery, the injustice of war, and the bleakness of what Xerxes promises.
Yet the historical inaccuracy is ripe, and rewritten to appeal to Western notions of glory and sentiment. Historian Gary Leupp of Tufts challenged the film, explaining” In short: 300's depiction of the battle of Thermopylae is not merely inaccurate, as any film adaptation of a graphic novel has the perfect right to be. It's what the Iranians say it is: racist and insulting. It pits the glorious Greeks with whom the audience must sympathize against a "mystical" and "tyrannical" culture posing an imminent existential threat. It is, de facto, an anti-Persian/anti-Iranian propaganda film” (2007). In his statement, he explicitly breaks down the inaccuracies regarding the history of Xerxes and Persia versus the representation seen onscreen, which can be found in the citations link below.
300 was but one example on the big screen. The late ‘00s/early ‘10s was the period of high-stakes television and as well. Shows like Homeland brought A-list performers like Claire Danes onscreen and normalized Islamophobia. Numerous forms of media following the attacks have depicted Muslims as “extremists, barbaric, insidious, and untrustworthy”.
What many of us forget about is the very simple passage of time and the birth of new generations. Within a few short years, Gen Z has arisen, all but forgetting the pain and anxiety born of the September 11th attacks and seemingly everything that came with it–after all, none of them can even remember the day.
In addition to that they are a generation born amidst an era of rapid information cycling and trend generation, and place an importance on publicly presenting their morality on their sleeve. All of this combined means the lessons, hardships, and mistakes of the past–can be forgotten quicker than we can imagine, and expectations to adhere to newly defined ideals of what is politically correct are defined seemingly overnight.
It can be hard to keep up with. Especially if one is still concerned with the trials that seemed so important–and still are–ten years ago. Given the thought Villeneuve put into expanding upon aspects of Dune, it is difficult to imagine he didn’t put thought into how issues of problematic representation of MENA could arise.
Ali-Karjoo Ravary writing for Al Jazeera pointed out during the release of the first installation of the film that the brand marketing changed up some of the wording of the film, stating “a crusade is coming” which marked an intentional difference from the book’s statement of “a jihad is coming”. Wording matters, as “Herbert’s nuanced understanding of jihad shows in his narrative. He did not aim to present jihad as simply a “bad” or “good” thing. Instead, he uses it to show how the messianic impulse, together with the apocalyptic violence that sometimes accompanies it, changes the world in uncontrollable and unpredictable ways.” (2020)
Of course, Herbert’s interpretation is an empathetic view and not one shared by many people with biases against those who pray to any god without white skin. While he tries, Paul ultimately succumbs to his will and manipulates the Fremen into following his aims to declare war on the galaxy. As the Fremen are proven to be some of the most formidable fighters we have seen and Paul’s manipulations are aided thanks to religious seeds planted by his mother’s order, this becomes a jihad in every way. He is the prophet. They are his holy avengers.
To cast MENA actors in these roles would once again fill slots of extreme religious fundamentalists, and this time, ones following a white man–no matter how nuanced the film has been made. Granted, as actors, they have a choice. Choosing representation is better than having none, however, if they had the conversation would likely then become “Dune: Part Two is a stereotype of MENA actors”.
Is there a middle ground? There is of course, and this is where we notice the overt failure of casting directors in Hollywood. Following the criticism of the first film, Part Two touted its hiring of Swiss actress Souheila Yacoub who is of Tunisian descent. She played the role of one of the Northern Fremen, who stand against Paul’s attempts to co-opt their culture. Yet from the beginning, why not more featured characters? Why not Stilgar, Chani, Jamis, or even a surprise role similar to the one Anya-Taylor Joy played?
While post-9/11 Islamophobia may have ebbed before the War on Gaza, we’ve entered a time where even the Hollywood excuse for “star power” fails when we remember the global world we now live in. Whether they are stars in their land or Americans with parents or religious heritage, there’s little to no excuse for the continued erasure and diminishment of culture onscreen–and in time Hollywood will come to know it.
