Jiddler's Tipple Motueka New Zealand Pilsner (Picked up at Hampstead Butcher & Providore in London). A 3 of 4. Really bright lemon and line hop notes on top of a light, thin body that gives you what a pilsner should. Nice hop complexity on this lighter-bodied beer.

New Zealand South Island Adventure day 10 : Takaka -> Pohara -> Collingwood -> Puponga -> Motueka -> Nelson - It had been another big day to explore golden bay. Started with a detour to Pohara Beach and then headed northwest to visit Collingwood where I captured a retiree playing accordion at the recreation area of the waterfront. The long haul including 5KM unsealed road to Wharariki Beach rewarded the most famous view for the day - Windows 10 Lock Screen. Do you recognise it? Cape Farewell next to it also looks fabulous. On the way returning to Takaka, stopped at Te Waikoroupupu Springs for rest with a casual walk. Drove through the long winding Takaka Hill way again before its closure at 8PM and stopped at Motueka for dinner. Finally arrived at Nelson for the night when it got dark. #goldenbay #tasman #abeltasman #takaka #pohara #collingwood #puponga #whararikibeach #capefarewell #tewaikoropupusprings #motueka #nelson (at Nelson, New Zealand) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpxIGz-vfnh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Trying this tonight.  Pulp brewed by RAR Brewing out of Cambridge, MD. The label calls it an "American pale W/ Citra & Motueka".  6.2% Alcohol by volume.
I'll admit I had to look up Motueka.  Motueka hopps, presumably.
The Untappd website says "A pale ale with layers of orange sherbet, lemon lime, and citrus hard candy".  I don't know where they get the sherbet and hard candy descriptors from.  I guess their palate must be fined than mine.  I do get a lot of citrus, which I like.  In the glass it's got that fruity hazy look typical of fruity hazy IPA.  It's a little orange, so I guess that also says citrus.
It's bitter like the IPA's I usually prefer, Untappd rates it a 65 ipu.  It's a little like the flavor profile of Voodoo Ranger Juice Force, but without the ALC content.  It's probably better straight from the tap.
I didn't share any with Tiny Godzilla, but he's intrigued.

Te Wehenga simultaneously tells the Māori creation pūrākau, which explains the beginning of the world, in te reo Māori and English.

Mina Arndt - The Red Hat (ca. 1914)
After graduating from Wellington Technical School, Mina Arndt studied in London with Frank Brangwyn and at the artists’ colony in Newlyn, Cornwall, with Harold and Laura Knight. She also lived in Berlin, where she studied with progressive artists Lovis Corinth, her second cousin Julie Wolfthorn and printmaker Hermann Struck. Of these, it was the Germans’ sombre palette and techniques that most influenced Arndt.
Following the outbreak of war in 1914, and brief internment in Germany as a prohibited British alien, Arndt returned to Wellington, where she found an attic studio in Willis Street above Bartlett & Andrew’s photography shop. Early in 1915, in this ‘delightful room with many and quaint accessories’, she held a private exhibition of her overseas and recent paintings, etchings and drawings, probably including The red hat, now her best-known work.
The painting is typical of Arndt’s single-figure compositions that fill the frame. The model, Wellingtonian Daisy Hay, wears a shapely buttoned tunic and is silhouetted by the soft light behind her, which also highlights the thickly painted green wall. Her face is cursorily built up with rapidly hatched brushstrokes, leaving her expression inscrutable, as though she has drifted off while posing. Once it becomes clear that this is not a portrait intended to reveal Daisy’s personality, the eye moves upwards to contemplate her crowning glory — the hat. Its oval form is swathed in a scarf, expressively rendered in crosshatched slashes of deep red paint. Its gorgeous painterliness and hue are enhanced and thrown into focus by the simple flat background of harmonious brown and green. An Auckland Star critic, perhaps failing to appreciate Arndt’s subtlety in using shape and colour, and accustomed to bright post-impressionist palettes of artists such as Edward Friström, found her art ‘a little wantingin colour and lightness’.
In 1917 Arndt married Leo Manoy and settled in Motueka, where she worked and taught from a home studio. She produced memorable domestic images of mothers and children, and also of Māori women washing clothes, which she exhibited throughout New Zealand and Australia until her early death aged forty-one. Moersleutel Motueka x7 NE DIPA (Picked up at de Bierkoning in Amsterdam). A 3 of 4. Lighter body and bright citrus and lime in the nose, as well as some more interesting vegetal notes behind it. Quite easy-drinking for the 8.5% ABV, and has a nice aggressive bitterness in the finish. Bright hop profile and well-balanced.

Maisel & Friends: Hopfen Reiter #8 - Double IPA

After getting Elrond back in working order, I said goodbye to Motueka (and a little baby Pīwakawaka who came to say goodbye back) and went on my way to Elaine Bay. I made a brief stop in Whakatū to get some groceries, and then drove down the road I mentioned in yesterday's post, which offered stunning views that were hard to photograph:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had to fight not to get out of my car for photos at every turn. I spent the night there and in the morning I went back out to the water. The sun was shining brightly now and the water was just as clear as the night before, which meant I could see the fish, the starfish, and the absolutely massive stingrays I had been wise to avoid encountering in the dark last night:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I enjoyed the (still) lovely sunny weather by going on my last hike of the island: Pīwakawaka track, which led to a very peaceful little beach in about 45 minutes one way:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And despite my reluctance, after having lunch (cooking in Elrond for the last time) I had to get back on the road. I managed to take some more pretty pictures of the view:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll admit, I was very emotional during the hike and the drive. It really feels like the end of an era, and even though part of me never wants to leave, I feel like it's a good thing that it's ending. I have been alone for too long, and today I really felt that. Not only have I been physically alone, and dealing with a lot of stressful things, but this trip has also forced me out of my sociopolitical bubble and that has been unsettling to say the least. It has made me think a lot about what I find important, what home means to me, and how I want to live my life going forward. It's like I've stepped out of my comfort zone, and now have lost all sense of where it's supposed to be. I crave to go back, I'm homesick, but I know I've changed. I still am changing. I don't know what my comfort zone is supposed to look like anymore. I'm sure I'll find it again eventually, but that is a scary feeling. A feeling that makes me look forward to being hugged again, and having at least a little more normalcy and luxury than I have now. But that also makes it scary to step into a new chapter.
As I drove and listened to harmonious, pensive music, the clouds rolled in and it started raining. It didn't stop until about an hour ago. I still couldn't resist getting out of the car to take a photo at one of my trip's very first stops, Pelorus bridge:
Tumblr media
I could almost see myself from four months ago right there, hanging out on the rocks and taking pictures. Feeling nervous and excited, the whole trip ahead of me. But also a lot less experienced, a lot more nervous about driving still, and in no way yet used to van life. I may still have so much to learn, but those things I feel like I well and truly have conquered, and I'm pretty proud of that.
I completed the way to Waitohi, recognising some stops along the way where I once stopped and took pictures and hiked. And then I finally made it to my first - and now also last - camping spot. I got myself some food, saw a familiar face (and told him how I remembered him, and he had made me feel welcome on my first day), and ate in Elrond while watching my favourite series. Now I'm just dreading the six minute walk to the closest public toilet, but I'll undertake that journey after finishing up all these posts!
Tomorrow I will take the boat back to Te Ikaroa, and hopefully get some rest. I'm already mentally preparing for the seasickness. I just hope the weather will stay dry now, and I can enjoy the views from the boat like I did last time!
For now, sweet dreams to Aotearoa, good afternoon to Europe. You'll hear from me again soon I hope!

Happy birthday DENNY HULME!!!!!!!!!!!! (18/06/1936 - ∞) 🐻⚡
Denis Clive Hulme, better known as 'Denny', was born in Motueka in the South Island, New Zealand. He grew up, with his younger sister Anita, on his family's farm in the tiny bay of Pongakawa; his father ran a truck business and thanks to those trucks, Denny showed from an early age his interest for the thrill of driving and speed: while sitting on his father's lap, he learned to drive a truck and by the age of six, he could drive it on his own. He left school early and started working in a garage, from that job he saved enough money to buy an MG TF, to enter hillclimb competitions.
After all the success gained, in 1960 he managed to purchase an F2 Cooper-Climax car and subsequently got chosen, along fellow kiwi George Lawton, for the New Zealand driver to Europe program, that gave them the chance to compete in Formula Junior and Formula Two across Europe. Two years after competing in the two categories, and participating at Le Mans for Abarth, the New Zealander, moved to London, and started working as a mechanic in Jack Brabham's garage, but slowly made his way into the cockpit.
Denny raced for Brabham in F2 races and non-championship events, but finally, in 1965, he got the chance he was waiting for: replacing Dan Gurney, who was busy at the indy 500 that weekend, he made his debut at the Monaco Grand Prix; he became officially a memeber of the Brabham team in '66, when Dan left, and had his first full F1 season. He stayed in the team till 1967, the year he won his first, and only, championship.
In 1968 he took a big step: he moved to the McLaren team, owned by fellow Kiwi, Bruce McLaren, with whom was already teammate in the Can-Am series overseas. But in 1970, despite Bruce's passing, and a serious injury caused from methanol fire, that severally burned both his hands, he undeterrely continued racing, feeling that he owed it to Bruce and the McLaren team; he would stay in McLaren till 1974, before retiring from F1.
Even though he retired from f1, he couldn't stop racing: throughtout the 80s he competed in different Touring cars competitions.
Denny would pass away in 1992 due to heart attack, while competing at one of his favourite events, the Bathurst 1000: he managed to safely stop the car at the side of the race track, he later got transported to the hospital, but there wasn't much the doctors could do.
Denny took part in the infamous 1966 Le Mans with teammate Ken Miles, and was a foundamental part of the McLaren team, especially in the Can-Am series.
He was nicknamed 'The Bear', because of his "gruff nature" and "rugged features", but was a sensible man that was unable to express properly his feelings.
Till to this day he ramins the first and only New Zealander to win the World Championship.

#7428 Aslin That’s Facts (USA) MURRICA! We’re on our biggest trip to date (have a guess where we’re going) and we have a three-day drive, starting this morning. We’re spending the first night in a fave town of ours, Alexandria, Virginia, so of course I hit Aslin as soon as we touched down. I picked up their New Zealand Pils, and it’s glorious. Coming in at 5.4%, it pours clear with a fluffy head and a tropical, malty nose, it’s dry-hopped with Waimea and Motueka, it’s crisp and clean with a great grain bill and some grassy bitterness up front, it’s super smooth with some nice sweetness, it’s super dusty, hella refreshing, wrapping in a dry, biscuity finish. Bloody fantastic. (at Alexandria, Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqZlsbKNUJQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

###
About Alewife Brewing Alewife Brewing is a small batch brewery located in the heart of the Sunnyside section of Queens, NY. We focus on brewing traditional and innovative styles of beer, using only the finest ingredients. Our goal is to provide a unique and enjoyable drinking experience for all who visit our taproom.
Alewife Brewing has fallen in love with the stories of ancient times and the roles women had in society. The peace they emulated through their beliefs and love towards nature and all species has inspired us to capture their magic in our beers and on our 16 oz. can labels. The latest historical findings suggest that wine was not the oldest elixir, but in fact, beer mixed with psychedelic substances used in shamanistic ceremonies dating back much further. Gathered and formulated, the Alewives were the makers of both spiritual and medicinal potions.
Through our journeys thus far in life, we’ve developed a deep love for ancient elixirs while brewing and traveling to learn ancient and modern techniques for exceptional beers brewed at our new home in Sunnyside, Queens.
Don't worry, it's just beer we make, no special additions!
