I was having the rounded spine conversation the other day ... Rounded spine... . Good? . Bad? . A lil bit of both? . We get to a point when we villenize certain actions { villenize ? Is that even a word? - I’m going w it anyway 🤷🏼♀️} . Doing things w a rounded spine is one of them - but really... . Any action your body can perform should be considered a “legal action” for your body . Where we run into problems often times is that we are more comfortable lifting w a rounded spine because the muscles of the back take over rather than our core bracing . So should you lift things w a rounded a spine? . Like many other things - it depends ... . Are you doing it consciously - choosing to round your back right now? Or are you doing it without awareness just to lift a heavier piece of something - ya get me? . Awareness and connection to your body and why you are doing certain things is def king in all body movement . So don’t let anyone ever tell you a movement is wrong - but do question everything and connect into your body to make sure you are making a choice and not just having it be a by product of the situation. . Susan Harker is a specialist in corrective exercise and Pilates. Whether remedying niggling aches and pains or treating long-term injuries, Susan tailors her training programmes to individual needs. Here she recalls working with Allison.
‘Allison was suffering with back and hip pain and felt that she lacked strength. To begin, we used Pilates exercises and movement patterns to strengthen and tone her stomach, so improving posture and spinal alignment. As her core became more stable, so there was less stress on her joints and limbs. Next, we focused on her gluts – they provide the back and pelvis with essential support – using specific isolated exercises to fire them up.
‘I’ve been seeing Allison regularly for three months and the improvement has been dramatic. Having found and activated her gluts, we’re now concentrating on functional exercises that relate to her daily life. Allison is more body aware, the back pain and hip soreness has gone and her core strength enables a far better posture. The right muscles are finally doing the right job!’

This one is for my new friends @andrewparr and @chidiogo_oo who challenged me to show them “my moves.” They did this with kindness and encouraging eyes. I’ve only recently discovered that I love to dance and I’m still a little embarrassed by it. I come from the era of the white guy shuffle and moving out of that constraint is liberating but also a little scary. Fear of judgment, you know. . What the heck. If you laugh, then I’ve made you laugh and that’s good. But how about taking on my challenge? Try to move with as much fluidity, grace, rhythm and juiciness as you can. You don’t have to dance, (but I’d love to see your moves). You could walk, or roll, or fold laundry, or chop onions or do the vacuuming. The knee circles that are wonky, in this case, not the knees themselves (but the wonky-kneed among us can benefit from this game. I know because I belong to that clan). . Warm up with some regular knee-washing/knee-circles. Then keep one foot where it is but plant the other foot at a distance and/or angle that is different. Play around with foot angle, distance from the body and placement of the foot beside, in front of or behind the other one. And don’t forget to change up direction of circling, too. Try to be strict about straightening (but not hyperextending) the knees. . If you are at all like me, you’re going to make some interesting discoveries. This is some fearlessness! Wow @oldscoolmoves #Repost @oldscoolmoves with @get_repost ・・・ Play time! I was able to try an adult gymnastics class the other day. Fantastic fun. . I made reference in my last post to play being hard work. Here I am playing at doing a back handspring - maybe even a back flip. This is the closest I have come in my life to doing either. . Why do I call it play instead of learning? It’s an attitude thing. When I approach something playfully, I can explore and appreciate what is there in the moment more easily than I can when I tell myself that I am learning something. Somehow the word learning makes me more goal oriented and consequently more self-critical. When I tell myself I am playing, there is more space for delight and surprise. Words matter. They are powerful shapers. If you are not doing so already, I invite you to consider the words you use to frame your endeavors. If you already have found vocabulary that works well for you, I’d love to hear about it. . David is so innovative! So cool! #Repost @oldscoolmoves with @get_repost ・・・ Monster walking. It’s interesting to spend time with the exercises you tend to avoid. This is one of mine. When you poke gently at the reasons for avoidance, you can learn a lot about yourself and some of the hidden attitudes you have toward your practice. Monster Walking told me a whole lot about how I think some parts of my body are more important than others and about how I like to bring games into my practice. I had a lot more fun when I played with how many times in a row I could step over the block without touching it.
