so, in the building i really dug this match but hated the last stretch. between then and watching it back, wrestling discourse would have you believe this main event sucked from start to finish because their guy didn't win & everyone hates mox now. they would have you believe it was the worst ever aew main event. which is very funny because the entire match was actually... extremely fucking good. the level of backlash has been so hyperbolic, selective, and short-sighted that it had me going 'wait a minute, huh? did it play horribly on tv or something?' watching it back had me appreciating the whole thing, not just the initial 2/3rds.

i have two complaints about it. swerve ultimately being taken out by the worst finisher in wrestling just sucks. full-on sucks. the evp trigger is the absolute pits and "the most dangerous man in aew" being taken out by it sucksssss. 2. i wish swerve's blade job had been better because it would have given that initial lengthy mox control section an oomph that i think it needed. otherwise???

this was a very good main event. the whole thing. yes, the whole thing. at the end of the day, the thing i care about most is: was it a well-worked match. and this was a very well worked match, further bolstered by the crowd who gave a lot during it despite being at the end of an overlong, but overall really good, ppv. during this and the, also very underappreciated, mox/cope street fight (their revolution main event stunk tho lbr) mox has been locked in in a way i haven't seen for most of his title reign beyond that signature lived-in animalistic energy. they were really laying into each other. i dug the early focus on mat work and the way it returned back to that later on. it was high impact, with a measured pace that was really well modulated. yes, there were a ton of run-ins but they were all quick and smooth, never bringing the match to a halt the way i've seen so many other (death riders or otherwise) matches do. and it set up a lot of potentially really exciting stuff. there was a reason for all of it. maybe not reasons ppl dug or agreed with, but reasons. it seems clear to me (see below) that the bucks intervened because their elite takeover didn't end up doing much and they are shit-stirrers and like to disrupt top-level shit so they can force their way back into things because they are smug gremlins.

if i'm wrong, i'm wrong. but after the ppv went off the air, mox was pacing back and forth seething (more than normal), extremely pissed and trying to talk himself out of approaching the bucks. the bucks were confused and amused. clearly they need to start setting up larger group rivalries for both anarchy in the arena and blood and guts and however that those sides end up filling out, this starts that. beyond that, we got the start of a potential hangman/swerve alliance, united in being fucked over. and we're setting up the opps taking the trios belts. the owen gets to keep its high stakes. mox should simply not be dethroned at a b-ppv.

unfortunately, i have personal irl reasons that complicate my feelings for swerve (nothing criminal, but a constantly distracting bummer!) but the guy deserves to be *the plan*, not to be slated into a rushed placeholder reign. granted, he *could* be that guy if they needed him to step into that role, but call me crazy for thinking he deserves more than that.

a well-worked match with the right kind of chaos. it seems clear that people's (very valid) long-standing frustrations with the death riders and mox's title reign resulted in an all-eggs-in-swerve's-basket situation. everyone was primed for him to take it and end their world title suffering. the company made sure it felt he would take it too. we were worked. whether that ends up being the right call is yet to be seen. but swerve's loss and where it puts his character, especially in relation to hangman and everything that was set up here is, overall, wayyyyyy more interesting than what a swerve win following from a quick pivot and a merely fine build would have been. the internet would have you believe that mox is garbage and has been for years, that swerve losing is the biggest aew blunder to date and that this was the worst main event, or one of the worst, that aew has ever had. none of it is true. make no mistake, the death riders storyline has, overall, been a let-down and has not risen to the level that its beginnings promised or the company's recent highs elsewhere. but people are being so ridiculous about sunday's main event that they got me making a damn post about it.

in all seriousness (i'm still thinking about the death riders close up with renee stuff) i think part of any wrestling storyline/promo feeling a bit meandering sometimes is that it's like 70% improv, right. sometimes more than that when irl circumstances change suddenly and whatever was 30% planned needs to be tossed out

the result is that we've pivoted from a mox who was harsh on everyone being too egotistical to really hold and represent the title and understand/value what it means - a mox who claimed to want to push younger talent and stop giving all the flowers to aew veterans - to a mox who is now doing some of the exact things he's been so angry about (claiming that he IS the world title so no one can take it from him; getting involved in older guys' retirement tours and simply throwing young guys down the stairs when they inconvenience him)

and at first it threw me off a lot because like, what the hell is this, even? but the more i think about it ... I might be totally wrong about this, because it IS heavily improv so they may yet take a secret third direction that i didn't even consider yet. but i think the hypocrisy is the point. i think the cruelty is the point. i think he's being an exaggerated parody of a set-in-his-ways aggressive type who might not actually believe in much of anything other than himself ... but who was initially savvy enough to know you can't just say that or you'll get laughed out of the building

but now it's crumbling around him, or starting to. he's tossed out and dismissed the people who were so close to proving him wrong, and now he doesn't know what it's for. he doesn't actually feel like he's won or accomplished anything so he keeps moving the goalposts and inventing new fights and new guys to be mad at

guy who unceremoniously dumped people who were against him in the trash: why is no one trying to fight me?

I don't go here (aew) but I am so intrigued as to what's going on bc I've been seeing posts about it all day where I almost never have before 👀 👀 👀

That’s probably because of me lol. I’d apologize but honestly it’s so good.

Honestly, AEW is my favorite wrestling promotion right now, but people don’t seem to want to give it a chance, because they’re ride-or-die for WWE. And WWE is good! But it’s geared more toward kids, where AEW is geared more toward adults. Idk how much you know about wrestling in general, so I’ll explain the whole thing as thoroughly as possible :)

My favorite storylines right now are: Deranged Blond Cowboy and Afro-goth Vampire wannabe (Hangman Adam Page and Swerve Strickland, respectively) hate each other but are inexplicably unable to free themselves from each other. There’s been stabbings, breaking and entering, blood drinking, body stapling, hanging the cowboy with a chain, and the cowboy stabbing a needle into Swerve’s face.

They’re the fandom’s OTP somehow. (They deserve it). We want them to be tag team champions. They’re wrestling soulmates. (They work together super well, no matter if they’re feuding or a team.) There’s a whole playlist I’ve watched a few times on YouTube, that goes through the whole storyline so far. It’s fantastic.

And: “Blackpool Combat Club gets Poly Divorced, violently.”

There’s a lot of history there, but what it boils down to now is: Bryan Danielson, one of the best wrestlers in the world, ever, needs to retire. He’s got a neck issue that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later, but the owner of AEW wanted him to have one last hurrah, so he basically dragged him kicking and screaming into the storyline where he won the World Title from Swerve (my beloved Afro goth vampire). Danielson said he’s not going to just give up the title, he’s gonna fight until he physically couldn’t anymore, and THEN he’d retire from full-time action.

Danielson has a group he’s in, Blackpool Combat Club (BCC for short) with dudes he’s been friends with for a long time, that was started by their mentor, William Regal who is no longer with AEW. (His irl son is in WWE’s “developmental territory - the proving grounds before they actually go in front of approximately half a zillion people).

Danielson’s BCC buddy Jon Moxley came back from some time off and was like “Hey this isn’t your company anymore” and confused the shit out of fans and coworkers alike.

But anyway, the night Danielson successfully defended the AEW World Title for the first time, his BCC team mates Moxley, Claudio (they’re hard to tell apart at first, both tall bald white dudes) and their protégée Wheeler Yuta, along with “new recruits” The Bastard Pac, and scary lady Marina Shafir. They were celebrating. Smiles, kisses, and hugs all around. Pac even hugged Wheeler.

Which is when we knew something was going down. Pac is, in fact, a Bastard. He’s not a lovey/huggy man. He was holding Wheeler back while Claudio uppercutted Danielson which shook fans EVERYONE. And then Mox grabbed a plastic bag and tried to suffocate Danielson while Wheeler sobbed and cried out for Bryan whilst being held back by Pac and ineffectively comforted by Claudio.

Danielson was escorted out on a stretcher that night.

Blah blah blah, a week or so passes, and we see Wheeler…not doing well. At all. He’s dead-eyed, almost catatonic, but he’s using Danielson’s finisher to win matches.

BCC tries to get through to him, but he’s not interested. He’s sided with Bryan.

Last night, Mox won the title but wasn’t actually all that interested in the Big Prize. He shoved it into a bag. He and the rest of the BCC started beating the shit out of Danielson. But here comes Wheeler Yuta and another man named Darby Allin, to the rescue.

Darby and Wheeler chase them off, but Darby’s back is turned, and when he turns to check on Bryan, who was sitting in the corner behind Yuta, Yuta hit Darby with one of Bryan’s finishing moves called the Busaiku Knee.

I’m a little fuzzy on the direct actions, because I was busy staring open-mouthed at the screen, processing, but Darby ended up taped to the ring ropes, and Wheeler suffocated Danielson this time.

Danielson was taken out on a stretcher. AGAIN.

Here’s fan theory: Mox, Claudio, Wheeler, and the rest of them still love Bryan Danielson. They’re doing this to protect him from himself so he doesn’t end up seriously hurting himself or worse. That’s how they got Wheeler to do what he did. None of them are happy about it, they’re not enjoying it. They just think it’s their only option.

But this is a story, it’s not real, so obviously we’re thinking that this is all Bryan’s doing. He’s KNOWN to be a devil who thrives on his fan’s horror. (Which is a positive thing in this business). We think that this, not the title, was his last big hurrah. THIS is how he wants to go out, setting his irl besties up for a MASSIVE heel (bad guy) run, while simultaneously setting up the guys that came running out to help him, to be the next big faces of the company.

…Anyway, yeah. AEW is fantastic. I highly recommend it. There’s also a lot of silly and fun storylines that won’t leave you traumatized lol.

I've been taking my time thinking about this because I got a lot of thoughts and feelings and I like time to process them first.

But that Bryan/Nigel match. The whole thing has just hit me in such a bittersweet way. The build up for this match was perfect, has been perfect for over a year now, really. And the match itself was fantastic. You really showed them, Nigel. Proud of you and happy you managed to get one last dance with your favourite partner.

But ah, a big part of me feels like Nigel deserved better. He deserved to be in a crowd that knew who he was, that cared about him. That cheered him on from the rafters, face or heel. This should have been at Wembley, for Nigel. Not in an arena full of people who don't really seem that invested. He deserves so much better for a last match.

I'm sure this will get me some heat here, but screw Swerve and the title shot at Wembley. I understand wanting Bryan to go out as champion, and I understand needing to free up Swerve for the Hangman feud. But Nigel and Bryan's match has been 15 years in the making, it should have taken priority. They should have worked Hangman and Swerve and Bryan's title win around this match, not that other way around. Nigel deserves better than that.

To not even be the main event, and to have so few people cheering for Nigel when he came out, it broke my heart. He waited all this time and that's all you can give him, wrestling?

And for it to end like it did, I really didn't like that. To have Bryan not make any acknowledgement towards Nigel (on camera at least, I dunno what happened IRL) and for Nigel to just slink off quietly... broke my heart. Especially to be overshadowed by Christian and Kip and Claudio and Pac. Just an afterthought to the 'real' story.

They could have done something. It didn't have to be anything big. Have them make up and have Nigel be the one to help Bryan against Mox at some point. Something like that.

But then again, it's kinda fitting in a way, isn't it? Nigel seems to be one of those people who never gets the fairy tale ending, who never quite gets the dream. Always close but not quite, his whole career. I guess that's why I wanted so badly for it to be perfect for him, and I know how much it would have been at Wembley.

Also, I know that logically, it's pre-planned and Nigel agreed to the way it all worked out, but... I just had to get this off my chest. I feel like they did my man dirty and he deserves better.

I still can't get over Yuta's new development in the deathriders storyline and how I admire it. The people criticizing his character/storyline as "wow Yuta is really lame/is a bitch/lol he can't even stand up for himself" etc. puts a bad taste in my mouth. I feel like the plot point is quite obvious of Yuta being desperately scared of being alone and weak, he's willing to be treated like dirt by Mox and Claudio because they offer brotherhood and an illusion of strength and toughness. He's not a "bitch" or "weak" in this position, this is literally textbook definition of an abusive family or a cult. And what I love about it, is it feels so real. Real dynamics I've experienced or seen people go through. It's not as simple as "waking up" and realizing you have worth or what you were taught is wrong, and that frankly sounds like victim blaming. The stranglehold of the promise of wanting to belong somewhere, getting that crumb of acceptance and power is that strong. It is a very real technique for someone to use one moment of affection/care and dangle it over the victim, promising to take it away if they disobey. And it is very possible for a brotherhood/group/relationship to start out with good intentions before falling victim to it's own ideals (toughness and masculinity in this case), and turn toxic and cultic over time.

I love Bryan, but part of me liking his character, is that's he's incredibly flawed. I believe Bryan, and even Mox and Claudio, care about Yuta but it's all expressed in a toxic way because they are flawed human beings. There's an argument for "if someone really cares about x, they wouldn't treat them this way", which is true. They could believe in their hearts what they're doing is right, that Mox and Claudio believe might makes right, or Bryan not even noticing his emotional neglect/realizing he's doing it, and that still doesn't excuse anything they've done. Is it emotionally messy? Yes. But do I like it? Hell yes, because that rings true to relationships irl and makes wrestling feel more real.

It's not as clean and simple as "oh they truly do care about one another, it's just that the booking is wrong and they're messing up the characterization", I feel like they're doing very interesting things with the characterization and adding depth to it. I'll be honest, I wasn't that invested in the BCC when Bryan was around (I still liked them, but them imploding wasn't my 9/11), but I'm personally more interested in their dynamics now that Bryan's gone. The ghost of Bryan sometimes makes things more interesting than his presence, weirdly enough
