Dear Sophie

The news of Sophie’s tragic death hit hard yesterday. I’ve never had that feeling with the passing of an idol before. Even ones that were around all my childhood like MJ, and Whitney and Prince.

I discovered Sophie in 2013 as she started collaborating with PC Music. I was 29 years old and I remember discovering Nothing More to Say while browsing soundcloud on the mega bus to Cardiff and immediately being obsessed with the intensity of sounds: squeaky patent leather, europop visions, J-pop fantasies, rave off-your-face nights and haunting synth’s from children’s TV - they were all there for me.

As instant love goes It felt completely new and familiar at the same time. Sophie’s music incapsulates this feeling of instant love. It was visionary, scary and all encompassing: a total collaborative world making in process... you’re on a packed bus with your headphones on, but you could be anywhere and anyone you want!

At this point Sophie was not an idol. In fact it wasn’t really until going to my first Sophie gig at The village Underground in 2015 that her image really figured for me, and when it did it was still in the dark edges. This was 3 or 4 years before her “coming out” Its ok to Cry anthem, which was when she garnered a mainstream following. It was her craft; her music that really produced the idol she became, not the other way round as is so often the case with manufactured pop music. 

My sadness of Sophie’s passing yesterday is complex: in the last 8 transformative years I myself have changed, and the world has become a very different place – lonelier I would say. Sophie set the sound track for this period and accompanied me throughout this time... stalked me as much as I have stalked her! She inspired and corralled me into being a fan and artist; into creating new work, and to also have a 2 year relationship with a boy i loved very much:

My complete and intitially secret obsession with Sophie in the first few years soon led me to incorporate her sounds and aesthetics into my work: Fan Riot - a Performance album, staged at Laban in Feb 2015 includes a *Bonus track in which I dance in all my glory to Hey QT (Sophie’s collab with A G Cook) while wearing a silicone pregnant belly - a la #Mpreg in fan fiction. In another work titled fic.the.sky in Oct 2016 and Oct 2017 I choreographed a 4-hour movement sequence to Sophie and other pop backing tracks with 3 performers set atop a patchwork screen. And in 2019 I was invited to DJ in Julia Bardsley’s performance An Apian Paradox dressed in Bee garb. Of course the majority of “my set” was Sophie.

I also owe a 2 year relationship with a boy I loved to Sophie. When I met my ex, a music producer himself, on our first date we talked non-stop about Sophie and PC Music. I was so excited because he was the first person I had met in IRL (as in not in a Facebook fan group) who loved Sophie and knew so much about electronic music. He was in fact much more of a fangirl than me and his own music, and later on his Dj persona, were all hugely influenced and generative of Sophie’s oeuvre. I learned a lot about Sophie from him.

My ex first told me he loved me at that Sophie gig in 2015 and he squeezed me really hard, scarily hard. He was high on Sophie and Ketamine, and I was absolutely in love. I have a sound recording of that entire gig which I took with my phone, and which I listened to yesterday. A painful but necessary ceremony.

In 2019 a few years after our break up my ex produced a remix with Sophie and another pop artist. Although we were not together any longer... Sophie’s legacy is somehow entangled with my own recent life story; including my memories, projections, and visions, my artwork and my heart. Sophie was a mythopoetic artist and Sophie’s music permitted me to fantasise and to imagine; not as a passive escape from a miserable past or a lame reality (although those descriptors seem quite adequate for the current lockdown), but rather as an aggressive and transgressive act of future myth making – even with your headphones in on a packed mega bus!

The fact that Sophie died at the early hours of the morning while climbing to see the full moon over the Acropolis in Athens at the tender age of 34, barely a few years of being “out” as trans and too young to die, nevertheless paints a sympathetic picture of this enigmatic force.  While taken from us too soon, Sophie will certainly live on for decades to come, and will for sure transform and outlive us.

The grieving process for someone you loved but who didn’t love you, or even know you existed, requires a lot of self compassion. So this is for all you fans who loved in invisibility.

We never met, but thank you. All my love to u, Rest in Peace dear Sophie x

Dima is the first of their kind, and faraday essentially has to come to grips with learning how to be a person.
