Imagine losing your rudder out at sea and sending out a distress call. And then the largest ocean-going wooden sailing ship in the world comes to your rescue. [...] To our knowledge it is the first time that an east indiaman, and the first time for Götheborg, to engage in such a rescue.
Tuesday last week, the 25th of April [2023], Götheborg of Sweden was heading for the upcoming portstop in Jersey. Just after 4pm, a distress call was sent by the MRCC regarding a sailing vessel that had lost its rudder and was drifting. Being the closest ship to the sailing boat, Götheborg answered the call. The sailing boat was towed after the Götheborg during the night from the 25th to the 26th of April. In the morning the 26th of April, a French search and rescue boat from the port of Paimpol came and met up off the French coast.
Text from the sailors on the sailing vessel Corto:
On April 25th at 01:00, we left Cherbourg and set sail for Camaret (the tip of Brittany). We are two experienced sailors on board (Simon and me) with the objective of bringing the boat to Southern Brittany.
At 15:30, we were at sea, more than 50 nautical miles from the coast, when our rudder broke. After sending a PAN-PAN call on the VHF radio, the three-masted sailboat Götheborg quickly responded to our call, offering to tow us to Paimpol (France).
We repeatedly emphasized that we were aboard a small 8-meter sailboat, but the response was the same each time: "We are a 50-meter three-masted sailboat, and we offer our assistance in towing you to Paimpol." We were perplexed by the size difference between our two boats, as we feared being towed by a boat that was too large and at too fast a speed that could damage our boat.
The arrival of the Götheborg on the scene was rapid and surprising, as we did not expect to see a merchant ship from the East India Company of the XVIII century. This moment was very strange, and we wondered if we were dreaming. Where were we? What time period was it? The Götheborg approached very close to us to throw the line and pass a large rope. The mooring went well, and our destinies were linked for very long hours, during which we shared the same radio frequency to communicate with each other.
The crew of the Götheborg showed great professionalism and kindness towards us. They adapted their speed to the size of our boat and the weather conditions. We felt accompanied by very professional sailors. Every hour, the officer on duty of the Götheborg called us to ensure everything was going well.
The next day, as we approached the French coast, we radioed for another boat to help us enter the port, but no one responded positively. Around noon, the Götheborg approached us as closely as possible and stayed by our side until the arrival of a French rescue boat to ensure that everything would go well for us before letting us go.
This adventure, very real, was an incredible experience for us. We were extremely lucky to cross paths with the Götheborg by chance and especially to meet such a caring crew.
Dear commander and crew of the Götheborg, your kindness, and generosity have shown that your ship is much more than just a boat. It embodies the noblest values of the sea, and we are honored to have had the chance to cross your path and benefit from your help.
We thank you again for everything you have done for us.
Sincerely,
David Moeneclaey (skipper of the sailboat Corto)

Greetings from the wasteland of cables and strewn about bits
The MIDI upgrade has gone surprisingly smoothly, swapping out an ancient MOTU MTPAV for a shiny new Conductive Labs MRCC- a very nicely thought out piece of kit
The goal here (in addition to replacing some dying hardware) was to better integrate the MIDI tone modules with the modular, and it's working very nicely
This is just a small chunk of the amazing NX5R (always forget what a fantastic module this is) taking a sequence from an Eloquencer, going back through some signal mangling, and with a light accompaniment from a Spectraphon
Simple and lots of fun- this will be great to play with

i found the COOLEST thing on MRCC Tornado Tracks Tool
i dont even know how to start off this post because i'm so excited, i find this so freaking cool. back in 1974 america had what was called a "superoutbreak" of tornados. 148 different tornados within a 24 hour period. it happened it many states, and it caused over $800 million (equivalent of 5 billion in 2023) in damages and it was the most violent tornado outbreak ever recorded.
there was one town where this was particularly bad, more specifically because the town had just been ruined by an F3 tornado just a day before, meaning this was a three day worry for them. the most fascinating part to me? this wasn't the last time america had a superoutbreak of tornados. the last one occurred in 2011, with 175 tornados striking multiple states. the difference here however was that 2011's outbreak happened over a course of three days, whilst the 1975 outbreak happened in a 24 hour period.
the superoutbreak also lead to a lot of improvements in torando tracking technology! it boosted urgency in the Doppler radar research and development, and the national network of Doppler radars gradually replaced the aging WSR-74 (for 1974) and WSR-57 (for 1957) radars in the 1990s.
i just want to give you a visualization for each of the levels of tornadoes because that's what really put into perspective how terrifying it must have been to be living in that area of america at that time, or even, living IN those cities being hit by multiple tornadoes.

What's known so far about the search for the missing Titanic submersible
The submersible last headed for the Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland is still missing as of Tuesday morning.
The U.S. Coast Guard is leading the operation with assistance from the Canadian Coast Guard vessel Kopit Hopson 1752 and air search from the Royal Canadian Air Force Aurora aircraft out of 14 Wing Greenwood.
5 Things to Know newsletter: Sign up to start your day with the biggest stories
Sign up for breaking news alerts from CTV News
The passenger submersible operated by OceanGate left St. John's, N.L. on Sunday morning and then lost contact with surface crews one hour and 45 minutes into the expedition.
Time is of the essence in the search due to the 96-hour oxygen supply aboard the vessel.
Here's what we know so far about the missing submersible:
WHO IS ON BOARD?
The submersible is carrying five passengers, including Hamish Harding, a billionaire and explorer, Paul-Henry (PH) Nargeolet, a French explorer, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, members of one of Pakistan's prominent families and, according to Reuters, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.
"We started steaming from St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada yesterday and are planning to start dive operations around 4am tomorrow morning," Harding wrote on Facebook on Saturday. "The team on the sub has a couple of legendary explorers, some of which have done over 30 dives to the RMS Titanic since the 1980s including PH Nargeolet."
WHAT THE SEARCH LOOKS LIKE
Former U.S. Coast Guard captain Andrew Norris told CTV's Your Morning on Tuesday "time really is the enemy."
"The challenge is finding it… that's going to be difficult enough, but then affecting some sort of rescue," he said. "That indicates the challenge that rescuers will face to do some sort of recovery, even if they do find it."
Search and rescue teams are battling the clock as the oxygen onboard the submersible lasts about 96 hours. Norris indicated there could be emergency oxygen supplies on board as well.
"They would have the normal oxygen supply that we're talking about that is a 96-hour window, but they'd also have — like on a plane if there was a fire or something — they'd have the ability to put on some sort of oxygen breathing device," Norris said.
The U.S. Coast Guard said at a press conference Monday that sonar technology is playing a key role in the search efforts.
If the vessel is found, Norris says, the rescue would be in "very difficult circumstances."
"The Sea State has to allow the deployment of that equipment, they have to and then it has to work kind of perfectly the first time so it's really a challenge," he said.
Beth Penney, a reporter with CTV News affiliate NTV in Newfoundland, told CTV's Your Morning on Tuesday that weather conditions have not been good for search efforts.
"We learned through social media, that this was going to be the only expedition that OceanGate was going to take to the Titanic wreckage this year, and that's because of poor weather conditions in Newfoundland and Labrador," Penney said.
CANADA'S ROLE IN THE SEARCH
The area where the submersible went missing is under U.S. jurisdiction, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, Joyce Murray, told CTV News.
"There is a unified command under the U.S. Coast Guard’s leadership that Canada is playing a very committed role in," she said. "The Canadian Coast Guard is doing everything that we can to help. We have the CCGS John Cabot (that) has sonar and it is headed to the site."
Both the U.S. and Canadian coast guards have teams looking for the submersible and the Royal Canadian Air Force has an aircraft flying above.
"Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Boston has requested assistance from Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Halifax in the search of an overdue submarine," a spokesperson from the RCAF told CTVNews.ca in an email. "The submersible has lost communications with its surface vessel located 380NM south of St. John’s N.L."
Kathryn Hallett, a spokesperson from Fisheries and Oceans Canada told CTVNews.ca in an email, "Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Halifax is providing assistance as required."
Murray says two other Canadian Coast Guard ships are in St. John's ready to port equipment.
When asked if any Canadian facilities came in contact with the submersible Murray initially said she would not "go into details."
"Because this is a hugely emotional issue for those who are doing this work to save the people aboard the submersible and their families, and every effort is being made," she said. "It's an international initiative at this point with assets coming from Great Britain and Germany."
However, Murray confirmed that Canadian facilities are doing "everything in their power" to assist in the search.
WHY IT COULD HAVE LOST CONTACT
Norris says there are multiple ways for a submersible to lose contact with the surface crew.
"There could have been a catastrophic breach, which would have resulted in an implosion, it could have had some sort of fault that caused it to lose communications and or the ability to lift itself off the seabed," Norris speculated.
Other potential issues include getting caught in debris that can be found along the ocean floor and near the Titanic.
Officials have not confirmed why the submersible lost contact.
WHERE WERE THEY GOING?
OceanGate Inc. is a privately owned U.S.-based company that provides tourism explorations to the deep ocean.
The company's website says the five-person submersible, named Titan, can reach depths of up to 4,000 metres — 7.2 times as tall as the CN Tower.
The Titanic, which sank in 1912, is located about 600 kilometres southeast of Newfoundland in the North Atlantic Ocean. OceanGate expeditions to the wreck cost passengers about C$300,000.
The submersible is made of carbon fibre and titanium and is 6.7 metres long.

The document's title is incomprehensible, a garbled sequence of letters and numbers. It seems to be some kind of code, or a set of instructions. It's impossible to say what it means. But it's intriguing, and you can't help but start to decode it, to see if you can make any sense of it.

Could Neoadjuvant Cabozantinib plus Nivolumab followed by Cytoreductive Nephrectomy be the Future Treatment Strategy for Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma?_Crimson Publishers
Tumblr media
Abstract
Over time, works from oncologists and scientists have contributed to the development of systemic therapies for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) with contemporary studies showing superior disease free and overall survival benefits in mRCC patients treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). The role of cytoreductive nephrectomy is however still controversial. Here we present with a 57-year-old female patient who suffered from mRCC with left renal vein tumor thrombus, left adrenal, right upper lobe lung and left hip metastases. After 6 months of combination systemic therapy with cabozantinib plus nivolumab, the patient achieved a partial response and received robot assisted laparoscopic cytoreductive nephrectomy (CN). Pathology report of the primary tumor in the left kidney was 85% necrotic and the resected specimens involving the left renal vein thrombus and left adrenal revealed exclusively necrotic tissues. Three months postoperative, an image study showed no evidence of recurrence. Radical nephrectomy after neoadjuvant cabozantinib plus nivolumab in selected patients may achieve disease free status.
