31 Days of Dead 2019 | Day 5: Jack Straw – New York, NY 3/23/72 // Box of Rain – Philadelphia, PA 3/24/73 // Mr. Charlie – Berkeley, CA 8/14/71 // Alligator – San Francisco, CA 5/5/67

December 5
Collaborations – Part II
Jack Straw – Weir (3/23/72 – Academy of Music • New York, NY)
Box of Rain – Lesh (3/24/73 – The Spectrum • Philadelphia, PA)
Mr. Charlie – Pigpen (8/14/71 – Berkeley Community Theater • Berkeley, CA)
Alligator – Pigpen (5/5/67 – Fillmore Auditorium • San Francisco, CA)
Yesterday, we highlighted some of the collaborations that took place between Robert Hunter and musicians other than Jerry Garcia. Today we will continue with that topic and explore some of Hunter’s compositions with Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Pigpen.
“Jack Straw” is a collaboration between Hunter and Bob Weir. According to Weir, the inspiration for the song came from John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. In a 2007 interview, he said,
“We were coming out of the Workingman’s Dead phase, and Hunter had this lyric. I grabbed it, and we came with a little sketch of heartland Americana, a balled about two ne’er-do-wells (Shannon and Jack Straw). It was patterned on Of Mice and Men, but we tried to put a twist or two on it. Same story, different context.”
As with “Greatest Story Ever Told,” Bobby made his own “Weir’d” modifications to Hunter’s lyrics, namely 1) “Hurts my ears to listen…” 2) We used to play for silver…” and 3) Ain’t no place a man can hide…”
“Box of Rain” is a Robert Hunter–Phil Lesh collaboration that was inspired by the impending death of Lesh’s father, who was battling cancer (“What do you want me to do, to see you through?”). Lesh reportedly practiced the song on his way to the nursing home where his father lay dying. According to Hunter, “Phil had composed a piece complete with every vocal nuance but the words. If ever a lyric ‘wrote itself,’ this did—as fast as the pen would pull.” “Box of Rain” has the distinction of being the final song from the band’s final show. They pulled it out as their second/final encore at Chicago’s Soldier Field on July 9, 1995 just one month before Garcia’s untimely death. The final verse carried more significance than anybody could have ever imagined at the time.
Phil had this to say about Hunter after his death:
“As much as anyone, he defined in his words what it meant to be the Grateful Dead. His lyrics, ranging from old border ballads to urban legend, western narratives and beyond, brought into sharp focus what was implicit in our music. A case in point is “Box of Rain” – he heard so deeply what my feelings were when I composed the music, feelings I didn’t know I had until I read his lyrics. The lyrics he wrote for Jerry likewise tapped into the very essence of Jerry’s heart and soul – drawing forth the music living there.”
“Mr. Charlie” and “Alligator” are Robert Hunter-Ron McKernan (aka Pigpen) compositions and they represent the last and first songs on which the two collaborated (1971 and 1967 respectively). As I researched these two songs, I was surprised to find a common relationship besides the obvious “Alligator wine.” One interpretation suggested that both songs provide a commentary on the relationship between Caucasians and African-Americans. The word “alligator” is a term sometimes used to describe white musicians that steal the music and art of black musicians. The term is also sometimes used by New Orleans jazz players to describe “white jazzmen and white jazz fans, jive black people, or jitterbugs.” (See The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics as a takeaway from Clarence Major’s Juba to Jive: A Dictionary of African American Slang – Penguin, 1994). And, the term, “Mr. Charlie” (or Mister Charlie) has roots going back to the Civil War. It was expression that was used by African-American’s to refer to “any white man.”
All of my picks today are early versions. In contrast to the powerhouse, jammed-out versions of the 80s, the early readings of “Jack Straw” were psychedelic country – Garcia and Keith Godchaux in full Bakersfield mode, Weir’s tenor quavering. This version comes from the third night of a seven-show run at the New York City Academy of Music in March 1972. It was only five months after the song’s debut and, unlike most jam-less versions from this era, this brief but fiery little one has legs!
I like the early renditions of “Box of Rain” because they have a peppy and triumphant feel to them. This one from the Spectrum on March 24, 1973 has been a long-time favorite on mine. For those who are quick to chastise me for picking an official release, please allow me to defend myself. I had already made my selection for this project when the announcement was made about Dave’s Pick’s Volume 32, so I am taking a mulligan and allowing myself a grace period as a little 10-year anniversary gift to myself. Besides, I used the source that is available on LMA.
Also, I selected the famous live performance of “Mr. Charlie” from the Hollywood Palladium (8/6/71). It’s only the fourth time the band played it and the crowd is loving it. I used the audience recording available on LMA in order to capture that energy.
Finally, this rendition of “Alligator” on May 5, 1967 is one of the earliest live performances that circulate. The band goes deep into the swampy everglades to deliver a lysergic jam of swirling psychedelia that concludes with the band chanting/screaming “Alligator.”
