Abbey Bartlet for the character questions thing. Please & thank you.
Thank you, friend! 💜💜💜💜💜💜
favorite thing about them: I love that she's a pint-sized, badass nerd, who's smart and witty and looks absolutely amazing wearing her tight skirts and high heels and showing (more than) "a little décolletage".
least favorite thing about them: That she isn't in every episode. Or her hair in late season 4/season 5.
favorite line: Oh, this one's difficult! Let's go with "No need to call the steward, I'm board certified in thoracic surgery."
brOTP: Abbey & Millicent Griffith, the S(t)urgeon General. Millie's Ellie's godmother and she remembers Jed's college grades, so they're obviously close friends. So much potential there but sadly, men don't care about writing female friendships 😭😭😭😭😭
OTP: Abbey/Jed Jed/Abbey, two halves of one heart, one soul and one giant, nerdy brain!
nOTP: Any ship that isn't Abbey/Jed. I don't ship either of them with anyone else, including Leo, together or apart, sorry.
random headcanon: Abigail Bartlet, M. D. has never seen Grease 😂😂 and her college GPA was higher than Jed's.
unpopular opinion: Abbey Bartlet isn't Betty Rizzo. No similarities there, except, y'know, the fact that they were both played by the same actress. Oh and I really like her post-Zoey's kidnapping arch.
song i associate with them: Wow, I'm terrible at this. Okay, so it's not even the whole song, just the chorus, and it's this particular live performance, but Lana's sad "Tell me I'm your national anthem" just transports me directly into the first half of season 5.
favorite picture of them: Look at my avatar 😊

The first signs of a new remake of The Forsyte Saga appeared on production listings at the beginning of April 2024. While there had been rumors before about the series returning to television, the pre-production announcements were the first sign the project was getting off the ground, with Mammoth Productions most likely behind it. However, it was unclear if the show was a BBC series, an ITV series, or a series made for PBS or Masterpiece, or a combination thereof. But with filming now about to get underway, details are out, and Masterpiece is the one taking the lead on the project, with a stellar cast lined up to star.
The Forsyte Saga is considered the British period piece that allowed the WGBH folks to launch the Masterpiece anthology series as PBS launched nationwide. The series was first aired in the U.K. on the recently launched BBC 2 in 1967, a network most TV viewers did not have yet. It proved so popular that it was rerun on BBC One a few months later, making it technically the first show to make the jump from network to network due to rising ratings. The series then transferred to the U.S. and aired on local PBS stations across the country (which were at that point not under a national umbrella as yet) and proved a massive hit, bringing in numbers that beat out the "Big Three" networks of NBC, CBS, and ABC. Its success proved an appetite for the best of British programming, presaging Masterpiece's launch two years later.
It's now 55 years later, and though Masterpiece aired a new version in 2002, nowadays, it is no longer just an importer. The streaming wars have made it so that the anthology series must co-produce and sometimes take the lead on commissioning shows. The choice to make its own The Forsyte Saga is unsurprising, considering the show's history and its reputation, which means that it has pulled in quite an impressive cast.
One reason Masterpiece has taken charge of the project? This way it can dictate how many seasons there are and when it is renewed. Make no mistake, this is planned as a multi-season venture. Here's the series logline:
The first season of six episodes follows the lives of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London and is based on John Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize-winning tale of love, loyalty, ambition, and betrayal.
The series cast stars Francesca Annis (Flesh & Blood) as formidable Forsyte matriarch Ann; Stephen Moyer (Sexy Beast) as her eldest son, Jolyon Senior, head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co.; and Jack Davenport (Ten Percent) plays Ann’s competitive younger son James. The next generation down features Danny Griffin (The Gentlemen) as Jolyon Sr.'s bohemian son Jo, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey) as Jo’s status-driven wife Frances, and Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark) plays Louisa Byrne, a Soho dressmaker and Jo’s first love. Joshua Orpin (Titans) plays James’ shrewd and sometimes ruthless son, Soames; Millie Gibson (Doctor Who) is Irene, the dancer whom Soames falls in love with, and Tom Durant Pritchard (Miss Scarlet) plays Monty Dartie, James’ son-in-law.
Outside of the titular family, Josette Simon (Broadchurch) will play Mrs. Ellen Parker Barrington, a wealthy heiress and friend of the Forsyte family; Jamie Flatters (Liar) is architect Philip Bosinney, Owen Igiehon (Disclaimer) plays lawyer Isaac Cole, and last (but certainly not least), OG 1967 The Forsyte Saga star Susan Hampshire OBE plays Lady Carteret.
Debbie Horsfield (Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale) will pen all six episodes, with directors Meenu Gaur (Murder Is Easy) and Annetta Laufer (Get Millie Black) splitting helming duties and Sarah Lewis (The Long Shadow) producing. Horsfield and Gaur executive produce along with Sheena Bucktowonsing, Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, and Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece.
The Forsyte Saga Season 1 is expected to debut on most PBS stations in 2025.

Rena (Re-)Watches Downton Abbey: Ep.5
I have about 2h of free time which means I finally can watch a new episode - today it's all about the flowers of courtshhip and actual flowers within a garden! Let's find out which member of thhe Granthams will violate privacy laws this time!
The Episode
Daisy is still having flashbacks about seeing Mary move Mr. Pamuk's (RIP, you chauvinist) body - she's skittish, still nervous. O'Brien and Thomas Barrow both crowd her, trying to find out what Daisy knows. I love how Daisy decides to keep quiet for now! O'Brien, scheming queen, decides to tell her "concerns" about Daisy to Edith, fully knowing that Edith will use whatever she can to harm Mary's pride. Edith knows how to coax the truth out of Daisy much easier, telling her how much she thinks this weight should not be on Daisy's shoulders. It's sending a shiver down my spine!
Aunt Rosamund is mentioned for the first time, informing her brother Robert of the newest London gossip. Robert finds himself at a loss and Cora suggest Anthony Strallan as an option (who I remember being a really cool old guy, we'll see?). It also leads Cora to inform Mary that her standing in society has changed quite drastly and she is now seen as "damaged goods".
Sybil has organized a new opportunity for Gwen to interview for a position as secretary. She even decides to drive her herself in the governess carriage! Sadly, the horse is losing a shoe and Sybil and Gwen are somewhat stranded, which brings the members of Downton Household both upstairs and downstairs into great worries. Still, they make it back by the evening. Gwen does not get the job, but Sybil is still quite positive.
A flower show is happening! Moseley takes some time off to help his father. We also find out that Lady Violet is winning since she's competing as nobody dares to insult her to her face. Isobel feels very eager to tell Lady Violet, making her aware that she does not "usually win, but always win". It's so heartweaming when the Dowager Countess (?) decides that Moseley is supposed to win! I love Old Man Moseley so much.
Thomas Barrow is shown to sweet some wine - Carson has noticed during inventory that the wine bottles do not correspond with the numbers - so this was nicely set up! He's also still pretty chill at making William's life hell. He and fellow-schemer O'Brien are having a talk of him only writing about Mary to a friend - O'Brien, who knows how to keep a secret, berates him that the friend's employer is known to be a gossip - but encouraes him of getting rid of Mr. Bates, who spotted Thomas stealing. COINCIDENTALLY Lord Grantham is missing one of his snuff boxes, and KINDLY O'Brien openly says in front of everyone how unfortunate this is, given that only Mr. Bates goes into Lord Grantham's room. Anna realizes the snuff box has probably been planted in Bate's room. They both suggest to Carson to search the rooms, watching with glee how worried O'Brien and Barrow rush to their rooms. Anna also hints to Bates that his feelings are reciprocated, confessing her feelings to him.
Lastly, Mrs. Patmore's is getting some attention as Cora asks her to prepare an apple charlotte pudding for Sir Anthony Strallan, insisting she cannot read from a new receipt. I like this a lot as sicne the first episode we have Mrs. Patmore sometimes being unable to see ingredients on the table and sweet Daisy helping her out. She also drops the chicken later on and the servants, after wiping it, still serve it upstairs - what else are they supposed to do? The dining experience turns into an utter desaster when, presuming it to be sugar, Mrs. Patmore accidentally throws heaps of salt on the raspberry meringue. Carson has a really lovely talk with her which shows a bit of a softer side in him, leading to her opening up that she has not gone to the doctor yet.
We're ending on a cliffhanger, oooooooooh, with Edith writing a letter to dramatical violing music to the Turkish Embassy.
The Characters
Things are still UGH on the "Does my Dad love me?"-front between Mary and Robert. Mary and Matthew are still flirting but not owning up to things. Edith is pushed to the side. Water is wet. Still, the talk between Cora and Mary is really nice because they both so disagree with each other but affirm it.
Edith - everyone always pities her, we also are now confirmed that she was in love with Mr. Patrick, the man supposed to marry Mary. When she also overhears Mary insisting Cora should focus on Edith and that Edith as "fewer advantages" than Mary - but man ,she's so cute? Is it her being the second daughter? Probably, right ,given Downton's shaky future? Additionally, while here maybe in order to appeal to Strallan, over the course of the series, Edith's interest in machinery will increasingly be explored - I think she even learns hhow to drive. My heart hurts when she is overlooked by everyone in the room.
O'Brien, you scheming queen. I remember loving to see just how she works - what an incredible manipulator. I remember disliking her a lot during the first watch until stuff happens but by now I really like her.
Anna and Bates are just pure sugar this episode - but man, we are just five eps in and we are speaking of love? Darlings! This is a British show, we have so much time! But the confession? "You are a lady to me and I never kenw a finer one?" UGH MY HEART.
Mary vs. Edith Awfulness Score
Not sure if it counts here because this is my interpretation of camera angles - but while Sybil mentions her sympathy for Aunt Rosamund's living circumstances of bein alone in a big house, Mary mentions there is nothing to dislike, with exchanging glances at Edith. Whil Mary usually finds herself surrounded by suitors, Edith is - as we will later see- by far not as desired. I am not sure if this counts as a jab though, given that we, as a first-time-viewer, might not know this yet? This counts given two minutes later we have Isobel spell this out for the viewer. Point for Mary!
When Mary mentions she would not have gotten down from a horse, no matter how lame it was, Edith immediately replies "No, I don't believe you would", indicating once again Mary's pride as her greatest weakness. (Is pride as greatest weakness also arrogance? I am not sure!) Point for Edith!
While Mary openly mentions to her mother that she thinks Edith has none advantages, she does not tell Edith to her face yet. I'll overlook this.
Does it also not count that Edith very much goes for Strallan when Edith goes for Matthew anyway? I would say yes, given that she also rubs it into Mary's face and knows how her position has gotten much worse. Point for Edith!
Mary decides to tell Edith to her face that MATTHEW told her how much the thing with Edith is not something he is into. The hurt doubles given that Mary knows this is Matthew's opinion. Point for Mary.
Also, a point for both in now openly challenging each other with Mary saying she's quite capable of catching Strallan's attention.
Another point for Mary for immediately doing so by showing Strallan a book he might be interested in the moment Edith wants to speak to the man. Man we are having points here, it's raining!
It is kinda satisfying for Edith rub Matthew's sudden "disinterest" under Mary's nose. Still, point for you, Edith.
Current score 6:7, Edith is stil leading but man, look how this jumped up!
Other Things
I have to say, I always love the scenes where they are eating. It reminds me a bit of Little Lord Fauntleroy with Alec Guiness - I am always super keen to see what kind of food is served. I am also 1000% sure there is Downton Abbey cookbook. (Just, checked, there is, but after my 3 Jane Austen Tea Time and Cooking Books, I really shouldn't buy that one. Apple Charlotte is NOT in the cookbook)
Why are the subtitles calling her Rosamond? Netflix subtitles are so dumb sometimes.
A really nice detail is how, once Mr. Carson (and tus I suppose Mrs. Hugghes) are both out of the house, a lot of rules among the staff seem to be more lax. O'Brien is doing handiwork at the dining table, William is polishing a chandelier and Thomas is even smoking inside of the house!
...that Little Women comment about raising daughters by Cora. Ifykyn.
Those are some nice roses but my grandpa's roses are the nicest!
Mary always looks so wonderful in scarlet. Gives me Pathologic 2 Maria Kaina vibes.
What was that weird monologue by Edith? It felt so unfitting with the rest of the show - but oh well.
Quotes
"You know what they say about old Savident. Not so much an open mind as an open mouth."
"It's easy to be generous if you have nothing to loose."
"OH? Judas was only trying to help, I guess, when he brought the Roman Soldiers to the Garden!"

This Week in Canon:
Welcome to This Week in Canon, where we revisit moments in The West Wing that occurred on these dates during the show’s run.
Season 3, Episode 15: Dead Irish Writers aired on March 6, 2002.
Season 6, Episode 18: La Palabra aired on March 9, 2005.
Editor’s Choice:
This week, to celebrate the anniversary of Dead Irish Writers, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite fics set during or directly after the episode.
i like shiny things (but i'd marry you with paper rings) by JessBakesCakes | Rated T | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | In the aftermath of the First Lady's birthday party, Josh, Donna, and the rest of the Senior Staff deal with the fallout of Donna's realization that she's no longer a U.S. Citizen. CJ, Sam, and Toby have taken it upon themselves to get this figured out, and it’s a good thing, because Josh’s brain can only present him with one solution: Marry Donna Moss.
(A Green Card Marriage AU set after Dead Irish Writers!)
after everything (i must confess) by hanyolo | Rated T | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | “Do you hate me now I’m Canadian?” Donna asks, somewhat dramatically Josh thinks but that doesn’t mean he’s above teasing her.
“Absolutely. In fact, it would probably be for the best if you found yourself a new job.”
“I thought so,” she nods solemnly. “I guess I’ll need to update my resume.”
“No hard feelings,” he tells her, reaching for another slice of pizza. “And, hey — I’ll write you a perfectly adequate letter of recommendation.”
“That’s really all I can ask for.”
// post 3.15 josh and donna share a cab after the first lady’s birthday party, teasing and affection ensues
anywhere else is hollow by joshatella (shuuuliet) | Rated G | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | While panicking over her accidental honesty to Mrs. Bartlet, Donna inadvertently says something just as damagingly honest to Josh about his relationship with Amy.
Two missing scenes to 3x15: Dead Irish Writers.
Looking Back, Moving On (the Reality Check remix) by Sangerin | Rated M | Abbey Bartlet/C. J. Cregg | Complete | It's natural for CJ and Dr Bartlet to drift together after campaign functions, or so CJ tells herself.
something always brings me back to you by ktlsyrtis for Arcturus_Sinclair | Rated T | Abbey Bartlet/C. J. Cregg | Complete | “I’m just the first lady. A figurehead on the prow of my husband’s career.”
The bitterness in her voice cuts at CJ, and all the reasons why this is a terrible idea fall away.
“You’ll always be Abbey to me.”
Battered, But Not Diminished by MAHC [archived by westwingfanfictioncentral_archivist] | Rated E | Abbey Bartlet/Jed Bartlet | Complete | This is a post-ep for Dead Irish Writers, and gives a more in-depth view of the events during and after Abbey's birthday party. It also deals with how Jed and Abbey face her decision to relinquish her medical license.
Fics:
Presenting your weekly roundup of fics posted in the tag for The West Wing on Archive of Our Own. If you are so inclined, please be sure to leave the authors some love in the form of kudos or comments. Be mindful of posted warnings/tags for each story.

Felt in the mood for a period drama for the first time in ages, and since I recently took advantage of Britbox's holiday discount, I thought I'd check to see if I'd saved anything last time I had a subscription (back in pre-pandemic times).
Sure enough, I'd saved a show called Cranford. I didn't remember much about it, but over the first few episodes I did remember watching some of it.
But I definitely hadn't seen the second series at all.
And now I'm having the discombobulating experience of watching Lady Mary from Downton Abbey play badminton with The Doctor from Doctor Who, and Loki from the MCU. And I think that Loki fancies The Doctor... or possibly Lady Mary does. It's a very weird dynamic.
And the guy who was Jodi Whittaker's husband in Broadchurch is there, and Mr. Carson from Downton Abbey, and the whole thing is too silly to be a drama, but too serious to be a comedy. Plus it's all presided over by Judi Dench - who just narrowly missed getting married to Dumbledore from Harry Potter.
Like, I know the joke that there are only a handful of actors in the UK, and all of them are in everything, but this is kind of outrageous.
Also... Tim Curry??? Wtf
This was made in 2007-2009... Before Downton, before Thor, back when David Tennant was piloting the TARDIS the first time, and Michael Gambon was still headmaster at Hogwarts.

West Wing Women. Ainsley Hayes and Joey Lucas are the BEST representation of women. They have their own voice and say what they mean. They have power and are yet compassionate. Ainsley's speech on why she is a Republican actually is what Republicans are MEANT to be. Brilliant writing and fantastic acting. Joey oozing confidence and accepting no crap. Just class.
This is really exciting for me because I think I've gotten...one other ask about the west wing before? So for that, I very much thank you because I am literally ALWAYS down to talk about my favorite tv show.
The women of the west wing are amazing. I totally agree about both Joey and Ainsley; I love them both so much. I LOVED Ainsley's dynamic with Sam and her introduction as a character is fucking iconic. I'm sad she left, but I would just LOVE to talk politics with her. She and I would disagree on some things, but her discussion of the ERA is what made me obsessed with the 14th amendment. (Also, Ainsley, Joe Quincy, and Arnold Vinnick are what republicans should be.)
And Joey, my love and my heart (also I just wanna mention Kenny, who is a gem). But Joey is just so smart and funny and insightful. She's always just like ahead of the game and knows what Josh needs before he's fully done asking for it. She's so smart and I love her and I wish she'd been on more often.
Okay I'm gonna talk about the other WW women for a sec.
No discussion of the WW women can take place without mentioning the inimitable CJ Cregg. She is smart, savvy and strategic and so caring. She's not perfect, and she's not meant to be, and I just really appreciate that she's not a Mary Sue. When she becomes CoS, she handles every challenge with grace and smarts, and hard work. As a woman in the workplace—and, frankly, in an Aaron Sorkin show—she deals with some sexism and harassment, and part of me is torn about it because while obviously, I hate that shit, it's also kinda realistic. I've experienced that kind of shit in a work environment, too, and watching her navigate it is really interesting, seeing which battles she picks and which she overcomes just by being better than the man who insulted her.
Now for Donna. She is so awesome, and watching her journey over time as she just BLOSSOMS and becomes confident and takes what she WANTS and gets away from Josh's office, she finally comes into her own. That scene at the end when she gets shown her new office makes me so emotional because she went from working at a tiny lil cubicle to having a gorgeous, large office of her own and working with the first lady. She's humbly brilliant and I adore her.
And Abbey Bartlet. She's also so smart and savvy, though I have a little gripe with her sometimes when she makes Jed's job harder. Ultimately, she wasn't elected, and while I'm fine with her having legislative priorities and pushing for policy, I think there are times she goes too far. But at the same time, I like that she's not perfect. I like that she pushes Jed to prioritize women more, and she's generally really supportive. And she's a great mother. And also, the staff can be kinda disrespectful of her. She's DR. Bartlet, and they call her Mrs. so often; she'd deserve that kind of respect even as an ordinary doctor, but Jed says she's a world-class surgeon. She's just as smart as Jed, and if she'd had political ambitions of her own I bet she'd have gotten really far if not been president herself.
I love all of the Bartlet daughters, but Ellie is my favorite. She's so smart and humble and relatable and her relationship with Jed is so interesting. I like Zoey, but I got frustrated with her for being with Jean-Paul, because fuck that guy. Also, I cringe so hard during that scene when Jean-Paul is debating the economy with Jed and she says "I love seeing my two men sparring." Like, *gags*
And Liz, oh poor Liz deserves so much better than Doug. Honestly, at first I thought people were too hard on him, but then when we found out he cheated I was like "oh FUCK that."
And Amy Gardner is so fun. She's also gorgeous and witty and smart and I love her dynamic with Josh. She knows what she wants and she goes for it, and I love when she fights for her goals.
Oh and you know who doesn't get nearly enough credit? Angela Blake. She gets such little time on the show and honestly, it sucks that she only comes on when Josh is slapped on the wrist before the shutdown. I wish she'd been brought back more or they'd found some other position for her so that she and Josh could do different but still important jobs.
Basically, the WW women are amazing and I love them.

Downton AU Snippet #1
Set in the opening scene of 3.05, Richard’s been Matthew’s valet since abt 3.03
Returning to his dressing room after his sister-in-law’s false labor pains, Matthew Crawley felt a twinge of guilt at seeing his valet still awake.
“It’s nearly two in the morning, Richard. Have we kept all the servants from their rest this evening?” Matthew asked, trying to keep his tone light but unable to hide his genuine concern for the staff’s welfare.
“It was no trouble at all, sir,” Richard responded, conveniently not answering Matthew’s question, “Is everything all right with Lady Sybil?”
“Clarkson says everything is as it should be, and given that I have no experience on the topic, I am going to trust his judgement.”
“In your defense, sir, most men our age have no experience in this particular field.”
“You can say that again. I’m nearing my twenty-eighth year on Earth and I’ve never been around a pregnant woman!”
“A natural consequence of being your mother’s only child, sir. And you should count yourself lucky. When I was younger, I overheard the rather unpleasant experience of a friend of my sister. Believe me when I tell you it’s all I needed to know about the subject.”
“Oh? What happened to her?”
“Her parents were so concerned about her that they shelled out thousands for a huge London doctor to come and treat her. I think he even had a practice on Harley Street. It was all the neighborhood could talk about for weeks. But, during the birth, I guess he missed the symptoms of some disease or other, and she died.” Richard explained, forcing away the growing feeling that he had said too much.
“That’s horrible,” Matthew said, attempting to console his friend, “did you know her well?”
“Not very, though she had been very close with my sister,” Richard said.
“Still, quite tragic, especially for a young woman. Do you remember who the doctor was?” Matthew asked, not knowing what had prompted this sudden curiosity about such a small detail of Richard’s story, but nearly being swallowed by the feeling that it was of paramount importance that he know.
“I could never forget it,” Richard said with a chuckle, “The village was so furious with him, I thought they’d form a mob and storm his practice with pitchforks. It was a Dr. Tapsell.”
Matthew’s blood ran cold, and suddenly he could hear his heart beat speed up.
“Good God,” he breathed, “you don’t mean Phillip Tapsell, do you?” he asked, praying he was wrong in his assumption.
“Yes, sir, it was him. What’s wrong?” Richard questioned when he saw the horrified look on Matthew’s face.
“That’s the doctor Robert has hired for Sybil. I have to tell him right away!”
“I shouldn’t have mentioned it,” Richard said quickly, trying to take back his words, “I wouldn’t want to cause His Lordship any undue stress before his first grandchild’s birth. I’m sure he’s a fine doctor who just made a mistake.”
“Trust me, Richard, if something happens to Sybil, and Cora, my wife, or, god forbid, the Dowager, finds out I knew this information and withheld it, then my war injury will no longer be the most painful thing that’s ever happened to me. I have to tell Robert as soon as I can.”
“If you think it would help, sir.”
“I do, immensely. And I owe you a debt of gratitude for the warning, God only knows what might have happened otherwise. Goodnight.” Matthew said, retreating to his bedroom.
______________________
“You were in your dressing room so long, I was beginning to worry.” Mary said when her husband finally appeared in their bedchamber.
“So sorry, darling, but I promise it was for good reason. I was having the most enlightening chat with Richard.”
“I’m glad to see you and your new valet get on so well. Molesley was nice, but I sometimes wondered if he’d ever interacted with another human before.”
Nodding in agreement at his wife’s comment, Matthew began to recount Richard’s story for her.
When he’d finished, she looked nearly as panicked as he had when he’d heard it.
“And this is the doctor Papa has hired to treat Sibyl?” Mary nearly screamed.
When Matthew shook his head “yes”, she took it as permission to continue spiraling into fear for her sister.
“We have to tell him, and the earliest possible opprotunity!”
Putting his hand through his wife’s hair in a calming gesture, Matthew tried to soothe her worries while panicking himself.
“Darling, I couldn’t agree more. We’ll find Robert tomorrow morning, as soon as he wakes up. Don’t worry, I’m certain the second he hears what Richard told me, he won’t let Tapsell near Sybil. I’m certain Clarkson won’t mind stepping in at the last minute.”
Her worries not quite gone, but recognizing there was nothing she could do until morning, Mary fell into a restless sleep.
————————————-
Meanwhile, in the servants hall, Richard was replaying his conversation with Matthew in his head when His Lordship’s valet walked in.
“Mr. Barrow,” Richard greeted the man whom he’d taken to calling “Thomas” in his head. Her Ladyship’s maid had pulled him aside his first week on the job, and told him that, as one of the longest serving staff members, getting into Thomas’ good graces would help him advance at the Abbey. Richard hadn’t needed to be told twice, and he was glad that he’d taken her advice. Thomas was now his closest friend at Downton (and if he spent a good chunk of time gauging if more than that was possible, that was his own business).
“Mr. Ellis,” Thomas greeted in return, “how are you?”
“I might have just gotten myself in a bit of trouble with His Lordship.”
“You? What could you have said to get yourself into trouble?”
“I was chatting with Mr. Crawley earlier, and I ended up telling him about a friend of my sister’s, who passed in childbirth. It turned out the doctor who failed her is the same one His Lordship hired to treat Lady Sibyl.”
When Thomas burst out laughing, Richard’s concerned expression turned confused.
“What is amusing about that?”
“I’m sorry,” Thomas said, catching his breath, “It’s just that, His Lordship forgave me for literally stealing from him numerous times, is currently fighting to overturn his valet’s conviction for murder, and his wife has a maid who would be more at home as one of Notre Dame’s gargoyles. I truly doubt that his son-in-law’s valet warning him about a potential threat to the life of his beloved youngest daughter is gonna be the straw that breaks his back.”
Realizing from Thomas’ words that he was being a tad ridiculous, Richard sighed.
“I just didn’t want him to stress out unnecessarily”
“I promise, when Mr. Crawley tells him your story, he’ll be grateful to you.”
————————————
The following morning, both Matthew and Thomas’ predictions from the previous night came true.
Mary and Matthew had corned Robert the second they saw him, and told him everything. Robert cursed, made them promise not to tell his mother, and cancelled Sir Phillip’s services immediately, and asked Cora to telephone Clarkson, which she happily did.
And, that afternoon, Richard jumped to his feet when the Earl of Grantham himself appeared in the servants hall.
“Your Lordship,” he greeted.
“Ellis, I wanted to come down and personally offer my thanks. Your conversation with Matthew yesterday evening may have saved my daughter a traumatic experience, and I am very grateful.”
“Thank you, Your Lordship. I’m glad I was able to help.”

This is my first attempt at any type of fic since my ancient Wattpad account, and it is probably very bad, but I hope it was at least cute. Possibly more snippets from this au coming if anyone likes it

[April 30th, 2024] MASTERPIECE on PBS and Mammoth Screen today announce a major new reimagining of John Galsworthy’s Forsyte novels. Planned as a returning series, the first season of six episodes follows the lives of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London and is based on Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize-winning tale of love, loyalty, ambition and betrayal.
The Forsyte Saga reunites MASTERPIECE with acclaimed British screenwriter Debbie Horsfield and UK production company Mammoth Screen, the team behind global television hit Poldark.
The stellar ensemble cast includes Francesca Annis, Jack Davenport, Tom Durant Pritchard, Jamie Flatters, Millie Gibson, Danny Griffin, Susan Hampshire, Owen Igiehon, Tuppence Middleton, Stephen Moyer, Joshua Orpin, Josette Simon and Eleanor Tomlinson.
BAFTA winner Francesca Annis (Flesh and Blood) plays formidable Forsyte matriarch Ann, with Stephen Moyer (Sexy Beast, True Blood) as her eldest son, Jolyon Senior, head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co. Danny Griffin (Fate: The Winx Saga) plays his bohemian son Jo, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey: A New Era) is Jo’s status-driven wife Frances, and Eleanor Tomlinson (One Day) plays Louisa Byrne, a Soho dressmaker and Jo’s first love.
Jack Davenport (The Morning Show, Ten Percent) plays Ann’s competitive younger son James, with Joshua Orpin (Titans) as James’ shrewd and sometimes ruthless son Soames. Millie Gibson (Doctor Who) plays Irene, the dancer whom Soames falls in love with. Tom Durant Pritchard (This Is Going To Hurt) plays Monty Dartie, James’ son-in-law.
Josette Simon OBE (Anatomy of a Scandal) is Mrs. Ellen Parker Barrington, a wealthy heiress and friend of the Forsyte family, with Jamie Flatters (Avatar: The Way Of Water) as architect Philip Bosinney and Owen Igiehon (Disclaimer) as lawyer Isaac Cole. Susan Hampshire, OBE (star of the 1967 BBC Forsyte Saga for which she received the first of her three lead actress Emmys), plays Lady Carteret.
The Forsyte Saga is directed by Meenu Gaur (Murder Is Easy) and Annetta Laufer (Get Millie Black) and is produced by Sarah Lewis (The Long Shadow). Filming begins in May, 2024 in locations in England, Wales and Italy.
Screenwriter Debbie Horsfield notes, “It was an honor to be asked to write a bold new reimagining of Galsworthy’s epic saga. Our show is in part a prequel to the events of the first book, but also an opportunity to expand the world and place the women of the family center stage. It’s a love letter to the original story while offering an exciting new perspective.”
Damien Timmer, CCO & Founder of Mammoth Screen said, “It’s thrilling to be teaming up again with Debbie on this iconic story. Everything about The Forsyte Saga is huge – it’s an epic canvas, and Debbie’s magnificent scripts have delivered a truly great ensemble cast. I hope audiences worldwide will be captivated by the secrets of Soames, Irene, Jolyon and other Forsyte family members as they are laid bare for a new generation of fans!”
Susanne Simpson, Executive Producer of MASTERPIECE, added, “We’re proud to commission a new, original take on The Forsyte Saga. This sweeping, romantic drama portrays how duty binds a family together until it conflicts with matters of the heart. Debbie Horsfield’s inspired scripts will be realized by an exceptional cast and supported by a lavish production. We’re thrilled to be creating another one of the high-quality period dramas that MASTERPIECE has always been known for.”
The Forsyte Saga was previously adapted as a Hollywood film in 1949 and for television in 1967 and 2002. The 2002 series aired on MASTERPIECE on PBS

Notes: I love scones and appearantly Aiden does too! Why I am talking about scones? Well, read the chapter and find out!
While I'm at it I want to recommend the Cream Scones from the Downton Abbey Tea Cookbook. These are so good, I swear... <3
Chapter 3: In scones we trust
A typical morning at Downton Abbey usually looked something like this.
The first to wake up were Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes, followed by Thomas and Mrs. Patmore. The latter would wake Daisy to send her to tend the fires, while the maids did clean the common rooms. They would prepare breakfast for the lords and ladies, who were awake by now, before they ate as well. As soon as breakfast was finished and Lord Robert had said what needed to be said on that particular morning, Aiden would venture downstairs. He would join them in the kitchen wishing a good morning, to Thomas before anyone else, and stay until it was time for lunch.
Today was different. Aiden didn't show up after breakfast, neither did he after lunch. When he finally made his way downstairs, a leather bag clutched between his fingers, he did it with a frown.
What he planned to do could very much turn out to be a horrible idea, he knew that. But his situation left him no other choice. There was a rumor about him and though the truth was no less scandalous, he wanted to set things straight. If he was to be shunned he wanted it to be because of his own decisions and not some misunderstanding.
The servants stood up in reflex when Aiden entered the lounge with quick steps. A habit they couldn't or didn't want to shake, no matter how often he asked them to.
“I have indeed brought shame into my family in one way or another.”, he said, while putting down the bag onto the table. “But me bringing drugs into this house is a lie I can not and will not accept.”
Daisys eyes widened in fear and she looked like she was on the brink of fleeing.
Approximately a week ago Daisy had caught him in a very compromising situation which she unfortunately had misinterpreted in the worst way possible. She told Mrs. Patmore, the cook told Mr. Carson and Carson eventually told it Lord Grantham who had a word with Aiden about the usage of drugs in his home. Aiden was able to explain the situation rather easily but now he had to fix the damage and stop the rumors.
“I think you all know what rumors I am talking about.”, he said and looked around. Some of the maids had the decency of looking away in shame. “I'm not mad. I just want to set things right.”
With a practiced hand he opened the leather bag and began to unpack its contents. A few ampoules of glass, some syringes and antiseptic found their way onto the table.
“Daisy, do you remember our conversation about the reason why Mama won't allow me to have a valet?”, he asked and the kitchen maid nodded. “Well, I didn't plan to tell any of you, at least not so soon, and I probably shouldn't...”
Aiden stopped and closed his eyes for a second. This was harder than expected.
“The last time I visited Downton... I was around six year old back then...”, Aiden said and glanced at Carson to his left. “Mr. Carson perhaps can remember.”
“I do.”, he confirmed, a strange tone in his voice. “My lord, you don't have to-”
“Back then I was known as Lady Aine McTavish.”, Aiden finished his story, ignoring Carsons interjections.
Silence befell the room as everyone tried to process this information.
“I don't expect you to approve my decision, enough people don't, I just want to say...”, Aiden licked his lips. “These are no drugs, it's medicine. I take them once a month and I talked about it to both my doctor and priest.”
Aiden took a deep breath and refused to look into anyone's face. They said one would feel better after getting things off ones chest, but he felt even worse. He had lost a good amount of people through this, he feared history would repeat itself today yet again.
Before he arrived only the family had been informed about his condition, besides the servants who had already known him as a girl. They had chosen not to tell anyone else on purpose. People tended to react unkindly. In a few seconds, when they all understood what Aiden was, they would judge him as well. He did not fear anything beside hurtful words, he was a lord still... or a lady for that matter, but he wouldn't be able to show his face downstairs anymore. Neither would they want him to. Aiden tried to mentally prepare himself for what was about to happen. What had already happened so often.
“But you look nothing like a lady.”, Daisy said eventually, when nobody dared to speak. Aiden sighed.
“This medicine... corrects some parts of my appearance, though not everything. If I look like a man to you, it did its job.”
“So you are no lord then?”, O'Brien asked with a poker face. Aiden couldn't have spoken more than a handful of words with her until now. She was a nosy woman, always listening and watching too closely for his taste. But she was friends with Thomas, it seemed, so Aiden didn't mind her much.
“Technically I am not even a lady.”, Aiden sighed, still anxious. “Mama disinherited me, title and all.”
“Does her ladyship knows about this?”
“Of course, it's been the reason why I got sent here after all.”, Aiden confirmed. Not that the cat got out of the bag, he could may as well be honest. His reputation was already ruined beyond repair. “Mama hoped that some time in the kingdom would set me straight.”
Thomas inhaled loudly before lighting up a cigarette, pondering. Aiden couldn't help but look at him. He wouldn't get the chance to look at him for a long time, he thought. But when Thomas looked up and met his gaze, he saw neither anger nor disgust in his eyes. He merely blinked at him, his brows furrowed and lost in thought. Aiden felt like he was about to cry.
“His lord- and ladyship don't seem to want to set you straight.”, Thomas said after a while, blowing out some smoke. “Everyone calls you by your correct name and title.”
Aiden escaped a breath he was not aware of holding in.
“No, Granny supports me and must have spoken to Uncle Robert.”, he said. “But he is not happy about it.”
Thomas kept staring at him, though Aiden wasn't so sure if he wasn't staring through him instead. He looked down to his hands, which held the leather bag in an iron grip, trying to conceal their shaking.
“Well, I suppose the rumors are taken care of now.”, Carson said, touching Aidens shoulder as an act of consolation. “We appreciate you telling us about this and I only think it's fair if we respect your decision and lifestyle. As strange it may appear to us.”
Carson meant well, but his words misses their mark. If there was something worse than people insulting him it was people who pitied him.
“I don't want to bother you further.”, Aiden said with a hoarse voice, quickly gathering his utensils. “You must be busy.”
Without another word he hurried back upstairs. Aiden felt sick. It was the same feeling he had felt, when his mother had caught him cutting his own hair. Or when she noticed his voice changing. He did not want to know what she would do if she knew what else he had done to his body.
He closed the door behind him, after entering his room, and carefully placed the bag on his desk. Groaning he let himself fall backwards onto his bed, rubbing his face.
If only Daisy hadn't seen him, nothing would have had to change. But she had seen him and things had changed the moment he decided to spill his secret. Now he feared that his beginning friendships with Daisy and Anna would change and the way they would treat him. And even worse, Thomas would change the way he looked at him.
xxx
Thomas' days had become dull after Aidens confession. The young lord had withdrawn entirely for the last three weeks but Thomas still perked up whenever he heard steps coming down the stairs. Aiden not only skipped his daily visits downstairs, he seemed to actively avoid Thomas, because whenever he served upstairs the young man was nowhere to be seen. He did neither attend lunch nor dinner, he didn't join Thomas smoking and he seemed to know secret passages through the Abbey even Thomas wasn't aware of. He might as well have been moved out as far as Thomas knew. Not even today, when Lady Cora had invited the Dowager Countess for tea, he did show his face.
Thomas missed him. He was fully aware that Aiden did not owe him his company and that it was highly unnatural for a noble to spend so much time with the servants anyway. But Thomas had gotten used to his presence. He missed their little talks, he missed Aidens smile first thing in the morning and he missed being looked at like he was more than just a simple footman. Aiden had become a dear friend to him. A friend he very much liked to kiss, that was.
Before Aiden, he had never heard about people who switched their gender or, as Anna had phrased it, were born into the wrong body. To be honest, he had been confused and obviously couldn't relate, but he could imagine the struggle of trying to keep it a secret. Like homosexuality it was very much illegal to show oneself as a man whilst born being a woman, at least officially. In documents Lord Aiden would always stay Lady Aine, no matter what he looked like or as whoever he introduced himself as. As long as he didn't try to marry a woman or claim an official title as a lord, he should be safe, if he was careful.
Spilling his secret to the servants had been a massive token of trust and Thomas understood that the boy must be anxious about them thinking of him as foul. So he had gone to the library to do some research.
He had not found much, obviously, but there had been one particular story that he found most impressive. In ancient Greece they told a myth about a woman named Caenis, who was abducted by the god Poseidon. He raped her but eventually granted her a wish as compensation. She only wished for one thing, for her body to be turned into a man. Poseidon did as she, no, as he wished and he gave him an impenetrable skin as well. Some scholars argued that he did only ask to become a man, so nobody could ever rape him again, but Thomas knew all to well, that being a man did nothing to prevent being raped. Not today and certainly not back then.
In conclusion, people like Aiden were as old as time itself, just as people like Thomas had always existed. He had thought long and hard about it and with every day without him it became clearer: Aiden was Aiden, no matter what he had been known as before. Now he only had to tell him that.
What brought him back to his problem, because Aiden was still nowhere to be found.
The Dowager had left already and Thomas was busy clearing the table, when he spotted a plate of miniature scones. Aiden loved scones, but he hated raisins, so Mrs. Patmore had taken to baking the small cakes without them. In fact, she was baking them only because she hoped they would lure the young man back into her kitchen. But at first he had to know that these scones existed.
Thomas decided to not take the plate back downstairs, but instead went to place it in front of Aidens door. He did not knock, Aiden wouldn't likely be in his room anyway, but bent down to place the plate on the ground. The plate had not yet touched the floor, when he heard the door open.
“Thomas!”, Aiden exclaimed loudly after nearly running into the footman, who quickly straightened his back. “I'm sorry, I-”
“I brought you scones.”, Thomas interrupted him. Aiden began to fidget, trying to look anywhere but at Thomas' face.
“Thank you, but that really wasn't necessa-”
Thomas took a scene and stuffed it into Aidens mouth, successfully silencing him.
“They are made without raisins.”, he said as a matter of fact. “If you want more, come down into the kitchen. Mrs. Patmore made plenty.”
Aiden looked at him, mouth full and frozen like a deer in the headlight, and Thomas used his inability to speak to disappear. With quick steps he went down the corridor, hands sweaty and collar suddenly way too tight. He had underestimated how much he missed the man. Suddenly he wasn't so sure anymore, if it would be beneficial for him that Aiden might be going back to spend his time in the servants lounge. Not if Thomas kept behaving like that around him. He had to get a grip on himself and not let show his growing feelings for the young man.
But more important, nobody must find out that he had stuffed a lords face with pastry.

Rena (Re-)Watches Downton Abbey: Ep 4
Gosh I am so tired but I have time for an episode today! The problem with liveblogging like this is not being able to watch when I do not have something to liveblog on - so much for doing things "just for me", I guess. Now that Mr. Pamuk veni, vedi, vici and arividercid, it's time to see if actions have consequences. Huzzah!
The Episode
The fair is in town!!! And you know who else? Irish Boy Branson, aka the guy I remember needing a while to grow on? I liked the element of the fair as something that ties everything a little together! And of course how that event creates a little drama of its own. However, how awkward must this be - here you are, going in the evening after work, and then there are your employers right there at the fair? The people you help get dressed and everything? Hey, at least an excuse to leave the house! Mary's position within the inheritance is once again discussed - but I like that the focus is this time a bit more on her and how even with not knowing if she is the heiress or not that still concerns who is going to court her. Lady Violet decides to ask Matthew of all people to look into it, which establishes him as fair. Mary and Matthew talk a bit about her position, too ,which allows her to open up.
Matthew asks Robert a bit more about this, behind Violet's back, and thus kind of offends her, I guess? It certainly seems like a gendered gap vs power gap kind of thing! She is, rightfully, pissed and leaves. Mary asks her father why he is so adamant against not challenging the entail and Robert is all "girl, your mom's money saved you, so I did not nothing to this dynasty and cannot challenge it" - well, Robert, okay, cool, but really not so nice? Marrying Matthew remains out of the question for Mary. Additionally, Robert's love for Matthew's enthusiasm makes it a lot harder for her to entertain the thought of marrying him. Molesley has hurt his hand and suffered some chemical burns bacterial infection. Isobel Crawley just marches down to the doctor's office and helps herself, as member of the board, to something from his cupboard. But I suppose this is meant to show her experience within the medial field - and that I really like! She suggest he wears gloves and I am sure there is a moment where he...is not wearing them and people are shocked?* It turns out, as Violet later on sees him since he is not getting better, that it is not an infection but an allergic reaction to rue - and that wearing gardening gloves will make it go away! Thus, the moral of the story is - wear gloves. *Turns out this must be a different episode. Anna is sick, meaning no fair for her and more work for O'Brien. In a scene that, back during my first watch, clarified the romantic intentions for me, Bates brings her something to eat on a really small tray. It was so adorable!
Gwen shows Sybil she has been asked for a job interview and together they concoct a scheme to help Gwen take it. Sybil even wants to lend her her clothes. The interview is cancelled however as someone else has been chosen for the position (must have come per telegram then, right?). Still, Sybil appeals to Gwen to keep trying! Sybil gets pants made for herself. SCANDALOUS!
The Characters
It's so weird that Lord Grantham has no problem with his chauffeur reading his books as long as he signs them out BUT I remember there was a big thing in Germany going around that was appalled at staff starting to read more and getting library memberships - is it all a ploy? No - I am just shit posting! However I like how this episode provided more insight into his reasons why he is not challenging the entail (which, well, would still be a radical position back then I suppose). Additionally, the scene where Mary explains she will not marry a man she has been told to marry (but wouldn't Patrick have been one of these) additionally unites her and Robert in one thing - being stubborn and adhering to their principles almost a little stupidly. Robert's liking for Matthew, a man he - as Mary already rightfully analyzes here rightfully - eventually will see as his son hurts Mary additionally given that her father made it clear he will not fight for her to become the heir - it's a "misunderstanding" done right with the filming and the scenes, the dialogues - we know where all these characters are coming from and why this leads to trouble!
Mrs. Hughes is taking an evening off to meet an old suitor and, as mentioned in the quotes, chaos follows. I like how this parallels her privacy vs her life in service - we are also this time informed that the "Mrs" is to refer to her standing and not to her marital status, something that I was wondering about since I remembered her not having married before [REDACTED]. Of course that choice between private and public is her thing for this episode - but they do it nicely. She intervenes in the situation mentioned below and William rightfully tells her he has no idea how the house would be running without her. Mrs. Hughes tells Mr. Cars
The Daisy-Thomas-William "Love Triangle" is also further explored and I like how it shows nuances of all of them - Daisy being naivee and starstruck by Thomas, not seeing that William likes her. William taking always a bit too slow to make his move. Thomas, not interested in Daisy, still stringing her along, just to prove a point. The fact that this all happens in front of an audience (Bates, Gwen, I think I also spotted O'Brien?) makes it even more interesting - none of this is really secret, is it? It also provides Mr. Bates with a way to connect to the staff, threatening Thomas to stop teasing/bullying William. MAN and Thomas really does go out of his way to be cruel! The scene where Thomas asks William to do his buttons correctly and everyone watching is SO GOOD! With Thomas Branson being introduced, we already have his romance with Sybil teased - as he will be a character staying in all the episodes, I tried my best to keep my eyes on him! He bothers O'Brien by deciding to eat with the others because apparently the chauffeurs do not do that? He also asks questions which ,as we know, is always bad for a member of staff and mentions his disapproval. Branson also addresses Sybil during their drive, asking follow-up questions to her disapproval of wearing traditional fashion and is happily providing her with political pamphlets. Man, nowadays we need more men like Branson. Sybil voices, like teased in the episode before, enthusiasm for new and modern ideas - also in fashion! She wants to learn more wordly skills, though I cringed a little when she mentioned that one learns hardly anything from a Governness - but that might be my memories being too closely tied to Jane Eyre.
Mary Vs Edith Awfulness Score
No new attrocities were commited against each other.
Other Things
I've realized not directly binging this but limiting myself to 1-2 Episodes per day is much nicer. This show was on TV, right? I like that, it makes the suspense higher!
Beecham's Powders apparently still exist!
I actually watch the chair scene sometimes on its own because it's incredibly hilarious.
Mrs. Patmore trying to gently tell Daisy that Thomas is gay without actually mentioning it was also a sweet scene - she cannot really call it, can she?
Quotes
"I won't wait the table in gloves, I'll look like a footman!" "Mrs. Hughes goes out for one night and we all fall into pieces!"
"Leaving? When would I ever find the time?"

Richard Brinsley Sheridan Anglo-Irish playwright
Richard Brinsley Sheridan Anglo-Irish playwright
His plays, especially The School for Scandal (1777), form a connection in the background of this comedy of ways involving the end of the 17th century and Oscar Wilde from the 19th century.
Formative Years His mum Thomas Sheridan was a companion and confidant of Jonathan Swift; his dad was the writer of a pronouncing dictionary along with the urge of a plot of public schooling that gave an outstanding place to elocution; along with his mum gained a fame as a playwright.
He had been educated (1762--68) in Harrow, and in 1770 he proceeded with his family to Bath. There Sheridan fell in love with Elizabeth Ann Linley (1754--92), whose fine soprano voice thrilled audiences in the festivals and concerts conducted with her father, Thomas. To be able to prevent the harsh attentions of a Welsh squire, Thomas Mathews of Llandaff, she chose to take refuge in a French nunnery. Sheridan followed to Lille in March 1772 but returned to combat two duels the same year with Mathews. Meanwhile, Elizabeth had returned home with her dad, and Sheridan was arranged by his dad to Waltham Abbey, Essex, to pursue his research. He had been entered at the Middle Temple at April 1773 but following a week bankrupt with his dad, gave up a legal profession, and married Elizabeth in Marylebone Church, London.
Following his union Sheridan turned into the theatre for a livelihood. It conducted an hour longer than was normal, and, due to the offensive character and bad acting of the nature of Sir Lucius O'Trigger, it was barely a success. Drastically revised and using a new celebrity as Sir Lucius, its second operation 11 days afterwards won instant applause. The characters and situations weren't completely new, but Sheridan gave them mesmerized by his abundant comedy, and the entire drama shows Sheridan's remarkable awareness of theatrical impact. The drama is feature of Sheridan's work in its own genial mockery of this affectation exhibited by a number of those figures. The malapropisms that slow the play down provide a suitable awareness of caricature into the nature of Mrs. Malaprop.
Register Today Sheridan showed his fascination with composing the humorous little farce St. Patrick's Day; Or, The Scheming Lieutenant for its advantage performance awarded for Clinch in May 1775. Another instance of his ability to weave an intriguing plot out of well-worn materials is observed in The Duenna, made the next November. The figures are usually undeveloped, but the intrigue of the plot and enchanting lyrics and the songs by his own father-in-law, Thomas Linley, along with also his son gave this ballad opera excellent recognition. Its 75 performances surpassed the 62, a record for this moment, imputed to John Gay's The Beggar's Opera (1728), and it's still revived.
Thus, in under a year Sheridan had brought himself into the forefront of modern dramatists. David Garrick, searching for a person to succeed him as director and owner Drury Lane Theatre, watched in Sheridan a young guy with vigor, shrewdness, and a true sense of theater. A successful doctor, James Ford, consented with Garrick's quote and improved his investment at the playhouse. 2 decades after they purchased another half of Willoughby Lacy, Garrick's spouse.
In reality, Sheridan's curiosity about his theater soon started to seem quite fitful. But he had been responsible to its renewed appreciation of Restoration comedy that followed the resurrection of the drama of William Congreve in Drury Lane. Back in February 1777 he brought his version of Sir John Vanbrugh's The Relapse (1696) as A visit to Scarborough, again demonstrating his gift to revision. He even gave the rambling plot a neater contour and eliminated much indelicacy in the dialog , but the outcome was unsatisfactory, probably due to the lack of a lot of the prior drama's gusto.
What Sheridan learned in the Restoration dramatists could be seen at The School for Scandal, produced at Drury Lane in May 1777. That drama earned him the name of"the contemporary Congreve." Although resembling Congreve because its satirical humor is so vibrant and so general that it doesn't always differentiate 1 character from another, The School for Scandal does comprise 2 subtle portraits in Joseph Surface and Lady Teazle. You will find several Restoration versions (e.g. Mrs. Pinchwife at William Wycherley's The Country-Wife and Miss Hoyden at Vanbrugh's The Relapse) for its portrayal of some nation woman amazed and thrilled by the sexual liberty of high society. Sheridan softened his Lady Teazle, but to match the refined taste of the day. The part combined innocence and elegance and has been incomparably acted. The other components were composed with equal attention to match the associates of the business, and the entire job was a triumph of creative and intelligence calculation.
Sheridan's flair for period result, exquisitely revealed in landscapes in The School for Scandal, was demonstrated in his beautiful satire on platform conventions, The Critic, that since its very first operation in October 1779 was presumed much wider compared to its version, The Rehearsal (1671), by George Villiers, the 2nd Duke of Buckingham. Sheridan himself believed that the first action to be his best piece of writing. Though Puff is hardly more than the usual form, Sir Fretful Plagiary isn't simply a caricature of this dramatist Richard Cumberland but also an epitome of the vanity of writers in every era.
