Sh8iver me timbers
and blow me down
The rain is falling
on my county town.
It's wet out there
a puddle or two
for kids to jump in
and adults too
little "mudlarks" fun they do, have do! ... Misha

Here’s another short fic I posted on AO3.
The basic premise of this AU is that Emily’s second attempt to escape the Golden Cat, after she found out about the VIP exit and before Prudence locked it, completely succeeded instead of being foiled at the last minute. She traded her princess outfit to Griff for some old clothes and coin, and after the coin ran out Griff introduced Emily to Slackjaw and a 16 year old Bottle Street Gang member named Giles. Slackjaw offered Emily a job working as a mudlark for the Bottle Street Gang. Slackjaw is the Bottle Street Gang’s CEO, but Giles is the person who’s in charge of the mudlarks from day to day. Emily has co-workers who are more or less her age, their names are Gill, Caleb, Tom, Anne, and Tracey. Emily goes by Alice, Al for short. She deliberately chose to use a girls name as her full alias, but then a boy's nickname.
I am working on a long multichapter fic in this AU but this conversation was in my head fully formed and I needed to get it out. I hope by posting it I can generate some enthusiasm for the bigger project and find a beta for the long fic. I will probably take this fic down if I ever reach the point where the two scenes in this fic are incorporated into the longer work.

Gwendoline Christie joins mudlarks of the Thames as a detectorist
When Gwendoline Christie played Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, she wielded an elaborate steel sword. As Captain Phasma in the Star Wars franchise, she was armed with an enormous gun. In real life, however, she prefers to wield a metal detector.
The West Sussex-born actress has revealed that she enjoys mudlarking, a pastime dating back centuries in which people scavenge for treasures on a riverbank when the tide is out. Modern mudlarkers use metal detectors to try to find hidden artefacts.
“There’s something secretly thrilling about unearthing slivers of artefacts, tokens of another age, further reaching through time to touch a connection with our ancestors,” Christie said.

The British Museum has unveiled astonishing discoveries in its 2022 Portable Antiquities Scheme Annual Report, proving once again that the UK is a treasure trove of archaeological wonders!
From the muddy banks of the Thames to the rolling fields of Staffordshire, remarkable artifacts continue to emerge, thanks to the dedication of mud larkers and metal detectorists alike.

Today I started working on a novel (?) project tentatively called Mudlark that's a Star-Wars-flavored futuristic fantasy. Magic, experimental corporate cults, found tribe, ethically grey motivations, "we make each other better" tropes, and ace romance.
I kinda want to post about it on here but also I don't want to spam anyone so if you don't want to see that: please block #mudlark and/or #redwinternovels (different than my usual #redwinterwrites that I use for fic stuff).

The game of many names; Fivestones, Knucklebones, Otadama, Tally, Jackstones, Chuckstones, Dibs, or Dabs.

These ceramic reproduction pieces are modeled after Victorian examples. The game has many rules based on region and culture, but basic rules can be found online.

I prefer to play by throwing one in the air and catching it on the back of the hand, then adding another for each subsequent toss to increase difficulty.
Want to get your hands on a set? They will be available Nov 7th at 6pm ET.
