You stepped into the Batcave and looked around. Surprisingly you found Jason down looking at one of the computers. When you’d bumped into Alred upstairs he said that he was certain everyone was out but that no one would mind if you worked on a case.

“What're you doing?” You asked. Jason jumped and turned around then relaxed when he saw it was you. As you came closer you saw that he was shopping. “If Bruce knows you’re using his supercomputer to shop online again he’ll lock you out of the system again.”

“Yeah well, I needed to finish my Christmas shopping.” Jason said as he turned back to the computer and continued looking through the list on the screen.

"You haven’t done your holiday shopping yet?" You asked. Jason frowned at you and shrugged.

“Well, Alfred’s been too busy to get it done. So I’m doing it this year.” Jason frowned at you when you gasped.

“You get Alfred to do your holiday shopping! All those years I thought you were good at picking out gifts and it’s just been Alfred this whole time.” You tutted and shook your head at Jason who rolled his eyes. 

“I paid for it.” Jason grumbled.

“Who gave you the money?” You asked him and he licked his lips, looking as if he was trying to get around admitting it was Bruce.

“Bruce.” He said quietly. You laughed and shoved against him, making him move.

“Who's that for?” You asked and pointed at one of the items in his basket.

“Dick. I dunno what to get Bruce.” Jason said as you looked through the basket.

“Well, Dick will hate that… you know Alfred has a list in his office of gifts to get Bruce if we can get in there you could pick something off that.” You offered. When you looked over and Jason you realised he’d vanished. You found him a few minutes later. Alfred was holding him by the back of his shirt gently scolding Jason who was looking a little startled. YOu could hear an alarm in Alfred’s office going off.

“I assume I can surrender him into your custody (Y/N)?” Alfred joked as he spotted you and let Jason go, shooing him off with a fond shake of his head.

“You can try. He tends to wander off.” You smiled as Alfred hummed as if he agreed with you.

“Well, why don’t you go to that new shopping centre that opened last week. I can call when the computer is done with your lab results. I sorted it out for you.” Alfred advised. You looked a little disappointed but when the glint of a black card appeared from Alfred’s pocket Jason snatched it up and hurried off towards the front doors.

“I’ll drive!” Jason said eagerly.

“You will not. You’ll take a driver.” Alfred called down the stairs after the two of you as you followed Jason.

This is a study for the well-known monumental picture by Konstantin Makovsky “Folk Festivities at Shrovetide in Admiralty Square in St Petersburg” (1869. Oil on canvas, 215 х 321 cm. State Russian Museum), for which the artist received the rank of Professor in the Academy of Arts.

Shrovetide is one of the most ancient and joyous holidays of our country celebrated for a week before Lent; its ritual practices still contain many elements of pre-Christian Slavic mythology. The holiday implies a farewell to winter, welcomes spring, commemorates those who have passed away and conjures up fertility.

Konstantin Makovsky is very expressive in depicting the festive atmosphere of entertainment by a noisy, merry and multi-faced city crowd; he presented a real gallery of distinctive social types. We see performing actors, a chilled young man with a mug of honey drink in his hand near the samovar, a smartly dressed fashionmonger, a small child wrapped in his mother’s scarf over his fur coat, and a wealthy merchant family. The traditional folk festivities during Shrovetide turned Admiralty Square in St Petersburg into a theatre stage. The centre of the city is brightly decorated with colourful booths, wooden carousels, swings, teashops, flags, amateur paintings, wreaths, signs and billposters. Scaramouches, fools, actors, clowns, jugglers and acrobats are touting the public to their performances. Pedlars sell sweets, gingerbreads and sugared nuts. The art critic Vladimir Stasov wrote: “All of Petersburg is festive and smiling in the frost under the pink gleam of the winter sun. You can see a dandy wearing a pince-nez and boys in rags; merchant wives sweating in their mantles and booth actors in poor tights; office clerks blowing on a glass of hot tea and admiring the buffoons as well as young men skilfully getting grivnas out of their pockets; workmen, thickly laughing peasants and little ladies in smart hats, soldiers and sellers of nuts and beans.” There was a superstition that if there was no merry-making at Shrovetide, the entire year would be full of hardships.

I don't know if I 100% agree that the reporting in the DE video is exactly both-sides-ism, even if the editorial conclusion is laughably pathetic and definitely takes up a dipshit middle path position. The complicating factor is that the narratives being investigated have already been staked out in public discourse — I don't think there is a way to talk about the story without talking about the ~toxic patriarchal workplace abuse~ counterclaims from kompus and co. I also don't see how those claims could be reasonably investigated without asking the question 'will any actual employee go on the record and talk about their experience'. Anything other than direct interrogation of those claims would still lend them the benefit of doubt.

I do think there is journalistic value in opening that door, giving the employees who feel aggrieved ample time to say their piece, and letting the ephemeral substance of their actual accusations sit alongside the multi-million pound fraud that their bosses appear to be perpetrating. Like we can argue separately about whether weighing these disputes against each other is appropriate (it isn't lol) but these interviews are the moment that anyone with more substantive claims than 'they took a long holiday' or 'they don't always respect management structures' had the opportunity to present them.

As much as I think the editorial position of the host is dumb and spineless, the actual content of the investigative reporting is pretty comprehensive and transparent. As much as I've seen people complaining that equal time was given to the financial malfeasance and the interpersonal squabbles, I've also seen people complaining that the interviews should have been edited into subject-focused segments where everyone presents 'their side of the story' on each complaint. I'm glad it didn't do that!!! That would have sucked shit and muddied the subject!!! Giving everyone who wanted to speak a chance to speak was a good approach imo. The point is made in the first segment about the lack of paperwork from za/um — if persuasive evidence exists, and the opportunity to present it exists, why doesn't it materialise? Well.

e: to be clear, I think making the studio employees the centre of the dispute is disgusting, but I think that's on the studio heads putting them on the firing line for PR reasons, not on the journalists talking to them. the journos Are however stupider than pig shit for falling for it.

Honestly it makes me sad.

Look what Catherine is doing. She is raising three children + attending to all her patronages + attending key royal events + opening a research centre for early years which could potentially change our society for the decades to come! That's huge!!

I was so excited to see Meghan enter the family. She had so much potential, but like you, I feel let down.

I thought okay, here is a woman coming in from outside the UK, with a multi-racial family, with experience with the media, I can't wait to see what she has to offer the BRF.

But nothing has come from it...

And even now two years out of the BRF which she claimed stiffled her, what does she have to show for it?

She did the 40x40 thing for her birthday - great, what were the results? Who participated in the mentorship? Who benefitted? Where are those people now?

She proposed the Pearl Netflix TV series - about a girl learning about other inspiring people from around the world. Sweet concept, but overdone. Where is the originality? Where is anything new or groundbreaking? It clearly got axed before it started for a reason...

This Archetypes podcast....is no where to be found. When they did the holiday episode the caption was along the lines on the next episodes to be about reflecting on 2020 and seeing what 2021 will bring. We are now 8 months in to 2022!! Where is it? Apparently summer of 2022, but again, we are in the final few weeks and there has been nothing? No press. Not a peep.

I had so much riding on her and I think when the interview happened initially sympathised and thought, okay, now she's out we'll get to see what she has to offer and so far the response has been underwhelming...

ALL OF THIS. All of it.

I 100% agree. She had SO much potential. She had the opportunity of a lifetime to make such a massive impact and to "hit the ground running" (as she claimed she would) and she did nothing with it.

She did nothing while a royal. She's done nothing now.

And I know that she's done some things - it's not that she's literally just been sitting around staring at a wall, but nothing substantial has come from any of it. I would say her support of The Hubb Community Kitchen was the most substantial thing she did, while royal or not.

Nothing from her post-royal days has amounted to anything, as you said. It's just been a lot of hot air.

Meanwhile I have a hard time believing that they're employing people... like WTF are all those people they've employed doing? What are they getting paid for? They must be doing SOMETHING... right?

Cape-Watch Monthly Bulletin- December 2022

Happy Holidays, y’all! I’m your host with the most, Christina Cabello, welcoming you to the final Cape-Watch Monthly Bulletin of the year! The holiday season has often proved quite the challenging time for our favourite heroes, and this year has proved no different! Read more below for some of December’s biggest stories!

‘Tis the Season to Be Generous

If you ask me, there’s no better way to start off this Bulletin than to talk out all of the wonderful acts of charity that our friendly costumed adventurers get up to at this time of year! Among the largest drives to raise funds for America’s homeless and less fortunate come from, of course, the Guardians of the Globe, who set up their Annual Christmas Charity Drive, attracting exorbitant donations from many different sources in both the public and private sectors, all to benefit some of the most deprived areas of America. First held in Christmas of 1951, the drive was instituted at the behest of the original members, who felt that the duties of any hero at their level of influence had duties that extended far beyond simply responding to disasters and into uplifting the most desperate in society. 

Another similar fundraising event is the annual Capes Incorporated Christmas Spectacular, a large-scale charity event held at the renowned 583 Park Avenue events centre and featuring a wide array of celebrity performances and appearances by some of the most rich and powerful people on the Eastern Seaboard. All proceeds from the event are donated to the Museum of American Superheroes in the city’s Manhattan borough, as well as the upkeep of nearby homeless shelters in surrounding cities such as Yonkers, Newark, Lodi and Jersey City. This year’s event saw the appearances of many members of Capes Inc. such as Bolt, Commander Capitalism, Kid Thor and more, but also received a surprising visit from the Californian heroes Magic Man and Multi-Paul, who didn’t give their reasons for attending. 

Finally, I’d be remiss not to mention our newspaper’s very own event, the Cape-Watch Winter Charity Drive, held this year in the famous Discovery Park of the paper’s home, Seattle. Members of the public and high society alike can come along and show their support for the city’s less fortunate, as well as engage with some of the many local musicians and artisans that turned up in support! 

Holidays for Everyone (and that means EVERYONE)

Now, while the holiday season is mostly well known for Christmas, it would be unfair of me to not include all of the other cultural and religious festivals celebrated by our favourite caped crusaders this year. Our first example is the pagan festival of Yuletide, which began on December 21st and isn’t due to end until tomorrow on January 1st. The festival, largely speculated to be something that was adopted by Christianity, celebrates a few different things depending on the kind of paganism that the practitioner belongs to: for some, it’s tied to the celebration of a particular god or goddess, while for others it instead concerns the winter solstice, the day of the year with the least amount of sunlight, which can in itself represent other things. If this sounds confusing or convoluted, trust that you can easily research some online resources with more comprehensive explanations of the many pagan traditions that surround the festival. One hero who made their celebration of Yule public this year was the Irish heroine Clíodhna, who tweeted a picture of herself and a few others weaving a traditional evergreen wreath, as well as hanging up mistletoe, under which she shared an adorable kiss with her girlfriend and fellow heroine Áine.

Another celebration that may seem more familiar to you is the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah (or Chanukah if you prefer). This celebration commemorates the victory of Judah Maccabee over the Seleucids in 139 BCE. It lasts for eight days (from the 18th to the 26th of this year) and usually involves the playing of games like dreidel and the eating of oil-based foods like latkes and sufganiyot, as well as the lighting of the nine candles of the menorah. One example of a hero with close ties to the holiday is none other than the French super Quark Crusher, who tweeted his participation with a group of other Jewish heroes in the midst of his trying out for a position on the superhero team Breakthrough. 

Our final example of a non-mainstream celebration this holiday season is the Japanese festival of Shogatsu, which runs from December 31st to January 2nd and commemorates the first day of the Tenpo Calendar. Typical festival activities include praying at local temples for safety and good fortune in the coming year in a tradition called hatsumode, the exchanging of money packets called otoshidama, the sending of special postcards called nenga and more. One such example of superheroes engaging in the festivities came from the twins heroes Raijin and Fujin, who took to Twitter to show off the many photos they had captured during the festival in their home city of Osaka. 

Important Updates

Our next story comes straight from the Pentagon, where after a month of tryouts and many eliminations of many different heroes, the selection process for the new team Breakthrough enters its final stage. Among the remaining contestants are several favourites, including the Nigerian heroine Omi and the French titan Quark Crusher. However, there are also a few surprising decisions by team leader Frontline, the biggest of which concerning the controversial Bolivian vigilante known only as Vaquera. Despite calls for her to be ousted from the selection process entirely over a dubious track record, the blind archer has instead ben allowed to advance to the finals, and now stands with a serious chance of earning one of the coveted five slots on the line-up of Breakthrough. When asked about his decision, Frontline claimed that he had allowed her to participate on the basis of her conduct since her application to the selection process, which he described as ‘unbefitting of a supposed murderer’ and more akin ‘someone who simply wants to have a fresh start in a less traumatic environment’. Whether the reasons given are factual or not, her performance has certainly turned heads: despite relying on a modified bow and trick arrows in lieu of any major powers, Vaquera has fought and defeated some of South America’s greatest superheroes, from Devastador of Argentina to Uruguay’s Mateo Montez, now only being one of three Latin Americans who qualified for the finals. 

Another surprise is in a last-minute arrival among the Asian finalists, none other than the famous super-singer Trailblazer of Hot Stuff fame. When asked about his sudden application, Trailblazer stated that ‘creative differences between members resulted in the breakdown of the group’ and that the breakdown had simply not been publicly announced yet. He also stated that ‘this might be a good chance to flex the old crimefighting muscles. At worst, I won’t be so out of practice’. Despite apparently being out of practice, the flaming speedster still proved skilled enough to beat many of his fellow heroes, and now stands as one of the only two Asian finalists alongside the Filipino hero Animal Alma. 

And to top off the list of shockers, we have the American superhero Burly, who was exposed to be cheating and ousted from the North American selection process. The gargantuan hero, who first debuted as a member of Fight Force, was apparently caught offering bribes to other contestants in return for their withdrawal from the process, which would have unfairly boosted his chances of success and damaged the integrity of the selection process had it not been discovered. While Burly himself declined to comment. the event organiser and team leader Frontline called the cheating ‘an insult to the very spirit of fairness, as well as the other contestants’ and recommended that Burly ‘take a very long look in the mirror before he considers ever trying out for any team again’. In spite of his aspirations, it seems that the only things Burly is walking away with are a disgraced reputation and a bruised ego.

Now, while I could fill this last slot with some spicy news story or hot gossip about one superhero or another, I’d instead like to take the time to thank the most important element of this little project of mine: you, the readers. When I first pitched the idea of the bulletin to the editor, he called it crazy: ‘nobody gets their news in their email inbox, Christina!’, ‘what do you think this is, Change.org?’, and more stuff like that. But when the subscription figures shot up after the first bulletin all the way back in June, he already had me working on the next one! So I’d like to say thanks to you guys, who signed up and supported and read my emails over these past six months, because none of this would’ve been possible without all of you! literally could not agree with you more about the Steddie tagging stuff, like, I don't hate Eddie or Steve - I really fucking like Steve (despite his goddamn 6 kid fantasy which seems barely in character anyway) and Eddie is fine, a woefully misused, kinda overhyped, character that had lots of potential but that's besides the point - but this whole thing seems to have gotten so out of hand

sure, there is the option to exclude relationship tag and all that jazz, but we really shouldn't have to do that just to read fics about a pairing in their on tag - it's so crazy. it seems like some people just don't understand basic Ao3 usage and how to not clog their fics with irrelevant tags

when I look at Ronance centred fics (not tagged as multi, that classic F/F red goodness), if they have Steddie tagged it's as 'background/mentioned' in line with how central it is to the fic itself, right, but when you see Steddie fics tagged with Ronance not being 'background/mentioned', only to read it and realise, oh shit, this is just Steddie like, 1 sentence of Ronance, it's really annoying

this probably makes very little sense, but i found your page and it resonates so much about something so goddamn frustrating

the thing that makes it doubly annoying is that excluding tags doesn't even work. if you exclude ste/ddie, you exclude any good ronance fic that has them tagged in any way. if you use otp:true, the fic count drops from 2k to like 500. 5-fucking-00. no way are 1.5k of the fics in our tag ste/ddie and otherwise, because if so, that just highlights a whole other problem. and, as you said, it also just isn’t a length we should have to go to regardless. 

i’m finally going to just come out and say this feels like an issue of mlm shipper entitlement. everyone who’s told me they’ve experienced this in other fandoms has said it was with a mlm ship. as someone who’s only shipped wlw ships (none of which had large competing mlm ships), it’s not an issue i’ve even encountered until now. and while ste/ddie shippers are constantly flooding our ao3 and even tumblr tags, the reverse just isn’t happening. (or it wasn’t; i know some people are doing it on purpose now, and good for them, frankly.)

now, there have been some ste/ddie shippers who have asked how to stop their fics from coming into our tag, and those people have all my uwus, but i can’t tell if the rest (and majority) of them are unaware, obnoxious, doing it on purpose or a combo of the last two. (and considering my meme about this issue has like 2k fucking notes, my money’s on obnoxiously doing it on purpose.) 

we asked politely. it almost seemed to get worse. we fought fire with fire. they got a ronancer’s ao3 account suspended. nobody really wants to ask nicely on their fics/posts in case they weaponize the report system against us. it’s such a hot issue, other lgbt+ shippers in this fandom are having to deal with it. like, how entitled do you have to be about your precious never-gonna-happen semi-attractive white boys to be this notoriously annoying? i mean jesus christ. i was completely neutral on ste/ddie, and now just seeing the name irks me. imagine being so infuriating that you make people hate your ship just by association asdfghjkl.
