there's a new article out about the play. i think it's paywalled for people outside of the us, so here's a twitter thread with screenshots. i've also typed it all out under the cut here:

LONDON – Next month, the Upside Down extends its tentacles into London’s West End with “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” a prequel stage production that expands the world of Netflix’s sci-fi/horror blockbuster. 

And the creative team behind it hopes the play will be as groundbreaking as the series itself.  

“We’re about to bring the actors, who’ve just been in this cocoon of a rehearsal room for seven weeks, into [the theater],” producer Sonia Friedman says of “The First Shadow,” which is set to open Noc. 17 at the Phoenix Theatre. “We’ve been making sure it can stand alone without the special effects, because it’s all about story. We are going to blow people’s minds. We are going to terrify with some of the most startling, extraordinary things with the physical production.” 

The project originated with director Stephen Daldry, who approached Netflix’s then-content chief Cindy Holland after the show’s first season aired.  

“One of the conversations Stephen and I had been having was, ‘What theater have we ever seen where you get genuinely scared?’” Daldry’s co-director Justin Martin says. “It was an interesting challenge and provocation. We talked about other [Netflix] titles, but this one felt like the most imaginative and the most challenging to try and find a stage language for.” 

“The goal was to figure out, what does a mega episode of ‘Stranger Things’ look like on stage?” adds Matt Duffer, who created the series with brother Ross. “It was a very long, multi-year process to figure that out. But where they’ve landed is incredibly exciting.” 

For the Duffers, the idea of expanding the “Stranger Things” universe in new forms was an exciting prospect. They're currently working on several spinoff shows, including a children’s animated series and an anime series. The play exists on its own, but it also informs the narrative and characters fans know.  

“The idea was to explore Henry Creel and his backstory and fill in a gap that we don’t explore in Season 4,” Ross Duffer says of the villain also known as Vecna. “The play was being developed simultaneously with us writing Season 4 so we were adjusting as we went. It was an interesting way to develop a story, but to do it concurrently like that made sure everything locks in mythology-wise.” 

Development on “The First Shadow” began during Season 2. Daldry approached Friedman after seeing the magic and spectacle in her company’s production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” at London’s Palace Theatre. The creative team spent time brainstorming the story during the early months of the pandemic with screenwriter Jack Thorne, but eventually decided they needed someone who knew the series intimately. 

Kate Trefry, a writer on “Stranger Things” since Season 2, was an obvious choice for Daldry, despite the fact that she’d never written a play before.  

“Season 2 is really when we started to expand this world and mythology,” Ross Duffer says. “So Kate knows that as well as us. She's been with us in the trenches for so many years that we were so happy that she had this opportunity to do this.” 

From early on, no one wanted to simply remake the first season. Daldry wanted the story to be what Martin calls “in the center of the conversation,” rather than a secondary narrative, so a prequel made the most sense. 

“When we met with Stephen we had just cracked this Henry Creel stuff in the writers room,” Ross Duffer says. “We said, ‘Well there might be an opening here.’ And Stephen really fell in love with it.” 

“There are questions of ‘Why Hawkins?’ and ‘How did all this stuff happen?’” Martin adds, referring to the show’s fictional Indiana town, which becomes a hotbed of supernatural activity. “This felt like a good way to address that.”  

“The First Shadow,” set in Hawkins in 1959, is told over two chapters. Several familiar characters appear, including Bob Newby, Joyce Maldonado and Jim Hopper, who are in their last year of high school when a new student named Henry Creel arrives. Nearby, Dr. Brenner is getting his start in his lab. There are also new characters, like Bob’s sister Patty Newby. Trefry calls it an ensemble play with Henry Creel as the “spine” of the story. Beyond that, everyone involved is as tight-lipped about the plot as they are about the forthcoming grand finale of the Netflix original. 

“It’s about outsider kids who come together to solve a mystery,” Martin says. “And in doing so find themselves and each other. That's really ultimately what ‘Stranger Things’” does so well and why so many people connect with it.” 

Trefry adds that it’s also “about the loss of innocence and coming of age and how you are changed and ruined and saved by these formative events that happened in high school.” 

“So, hopefully, you’ll see that Hopper and Joyce and Bob are all presenting echoes of the trauma that is at the center of this play,” she says. 

In the first season of “Stranger Things,” Joyce, Bob and Hopper seem surprised by what’s going on in Hawkins. But Trefry confirms there’s an explanation for why they don’t immediately connect it to their high school years.  

“The climactic events that happen within these two stage episodes had to be something that could be written off as not magical or science fiction,” she says. “It had to be spectacular and make sense, but we had to go forward in honesty with our characters.” 

As a TV series, “Stranger Things” has a recognizable aesthetic. The Upside Down and its monsters are familiar to viewers, so a stage version needed to incorporates similar visuals.  

Because Trefry had never written a play, she didn’t worry about whether certain effects or scenes would be possible, which upped the ante for everyone included.  

“She cross-cut scenes as she would in the show and wrote crazy visual effects sequences as she would in the show,” Matt Duffer says. “She wasn’t limited by that because it then just presented a challenge for Stephen to solve, which is fun. The opening sequence of the play -- I don’t think anyone even knew if it was possible. I'm still not sure how they’re doing it.” 

Friedman and Daldry put together a notably skilled creative team. Friedman set the bar high from the outset, telling them, “I need to be taken to a new dimension of what is possible with theater.” 

That team includes illusions design and visual effects artists Jamie Harrison and Chris Fisher, who are responsible for the onstage magic in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” Harrison and Fisher spent nearly a year coming up with the effects in “The First Shadow” and have continues perfecting things during rehearsals. 

“It’s very pressurized because there is nothing worse than a bad effect because the audience knows straight away,” Harrison says. “We have to go through quite a lot of watching our work be quite bumpy before it gets smooth. And we have to bring the actors from zero magic skill to being very expert in a condensed period of time.” 

“When you have the world of ‘Stranger Things,’ people know it,” Fisher adds. “They have those big sequences, so we naturally are creating big sequences. We’ve pushed it and I think by us pushing, the directors and Kate have pushed us even more and said, ‘Now we know you can do that, we want this.’” 

As a series “Stranger Things” relies on CGI alongside practical effects, but onstage everything has to be done for real. 59 Productions are creating the video design and visual effects for the play, which will work in tandem with the illusions and Miriam Buether’s set design. Harrison says that “anything that can be achieved in film can be achieved in theater.” 

“In film, people want absolute reality,” Harrison says. “For the effects to be visually real. In the theater, we have a level of imagination that we can use as well. For example, in the piece we’re creating there are a lot more blood and guts.” 

Trefry adds that the stage show is genuinely terrifying. “It’s scary like ‘Stranger Things’ is scary,” she says. “There’s a little bit of like guts and gore, and then there’s also real trauma – people dealing with real stuff.” 

Other elements of the production will hint at the series as well. For instance, Harrison and Fisher met with the creature designer from the series during their design process to ensure “visual continuity,” although they won’t say which creatures appear in the play. And D.J. Walde’s original music recreates the familiar synth theme song with a theremin that matches the late 1950s setting.  

For the Duffers, bringing the “Stranger Things” universe to life on stage satisfies their love of practical effects.  

“The downside of CGI is that the audience is conditioned to the fact that we can basically do anything,” Matt Duffer says. “But there’s something about seeing it actually done. When I saw ‘Cursed Child,’ my jaw was dropping in a way it rarely does now with these big movies. We want to do the same here.” 

Because Trefry wrote the play while Season 4 was in development, the series’ writers were able to retrofit elements of that season to reflect the stage show. The events of the play will also help to “enrich” Season 5, Matt Duffer says.  

“There’s a ton of conversation and dialogue between this play and the events that happen in Season 5,” Trefry says of the final season, which is over halfway written. “It was about trying to create something that is canon, but where you don’t have to see it to see Season 5. But if you do see it, it’ll make Season 5 better.” 

“There are hints of where [the show] is going to go,” Ross Duffer adds. “I think when [Season] 5 comes together, all of those pieces will hopefully click.” 

“The First Shadow” tickets are currently on sale through Aug. 25, 2024, although Friedman confirms the case signed one-year contracts and the production is open-ended. The plan is to bring the play to Broadway and the rest of the U.S. as soon as possible.  

“Hopefully it can get to as many places as it can so as many fans as possible can experience it,” Matt Duffer says. “That’s one thing we’re trying to figure out: How do we make sure people are able to see it before Season 5 releases?” 

“The First Shadow” marks the beginning of a broader universe for “Stranger Things.” The Duffers say they can’t “focus on the spinoffs until we’re landed the plan with Season 5,” but so far they’ve enjoyed letting other artists re-imagine their ideas. 

“This was originally pitched as a standalone story and so to be here now is surreal,” Ross Duffer says. “But this has been the most rewarding experience for us creatively."

ahhh thank you!! i'm so glad u like my tamakyo fics, they have some of the all time favorite fics i'm proudest of writing. sorry i haven't published as many recently lol i have been having a mental affliction of the haikyuu variety.

anyways new fic! it's a multi-media project, so i'm including some graphic design stuff, some general writing, some photos (i'm not drawing them bc i'm a terrible artist, i'm just stealing screenshots from the show itself lmfao), and some miscellaneous things.

it's basically a peak into kyoya's journal-- this is why i was asking what ppl think is hidden in there last night! it follows all of his notes throughout a week in january: stats about the club, notes on his friends' lives, reminders to himself, that kinda thing. there are so many tiny details and references and easter eggs that i'm begging people to catch.

and because i am the way i am, i gotta include a little tamakyo subplot lmfao. i've got lists of reasons to and not to confess, little snippets of drafts of love letters, daydreams, etc etc.

i'm working really hard on making it pretty and fun and i'm so excited to publish this ahgafgjkladg

It is so jarring when fic refers to “Fire Nation features“.

Specifically and basically always, “pale skin”, “dark/black hair”, and “yellow, gold, brownish eyes“.

I definitely glossed over this phenomena the first few times I saw it (see disclaimer above).

Not to mention Ty Lee - one of Azulas own squad! - could pass as Aang’s cousin!

No one in the Fire Nation comments on the Gaang’s appearances in terms of blending in. “The Runaway“ doesn’t specify an Earth Kingdom girl, just a little hellion. Aang is only ‘clocked’ for colony-born when he opens his mouth and messes up the bow, not at first sight.

Now, there are people who fit the “Fire Nation Standard Feature” pack criteria: Ozai, Ursa, Zuko, Azula, Mai... almost entirely Royalty or Royal-adjacent in some way.

I’ve yet to see a version where FN Royalty features is specified. I’ve yet to see one where a non-FN character goes “oh huh, I guess that’s not as common as I thought“. I’m sure they’re out there, but thus far I’ve seen a fair few do this and very few, if any, modulate it.

Now, I’m not quite including fics where the argument is that gold/yellow eyes basically only appear in FN people. This has been true as far as I’ve seen. It’s only when “XYZ means FN and FN means XYZ“ that I start squinting.

Now, things could certainly be done with the narrative of “historically, FN is XYZ, but [war events]”. That can add nuance, in a lot of ways. That can be used to outline the shape of colonization, war crimes, and/or other interactions that have come up via the war. However, I’ve only seen that in the sense of “Earth Kid has Fire eyes, how tragic“ or the odd “colony Fire kid has green eyes, how unfortunate“ (iirc we don’t see many/any FN characters with green eyes so that one could be notable).

There’s also a lot of potential in “this is 90% of the time a specifically Fire Royalty trait“, but again, p much only the yellow eyes.

I’m just saying, if this comes up in something you’re working on, or reading, it might be worth questioning the source of that assumption.

Cycling Seasons, Fresh Skies: Memories

I knew from a long time ago that if I’d ever go for a T10, this would be it. When the event was finally getting closer, early estimates told me I was 900 flames short; I’d have to buy stars for this event.

Believe me, this was not the only purchase I made for this event.

I needed a better Challenge Live team, so I knew getting a 4* Happy Ran is required, to complete my Happy Afterglow team. I’ve never gotten any 4* Ran before, so thank god the 4* Exchange Ticket had the perfect timing.

Yep. ^^ Well, my Multi Live team was Powerful Afterglow-based, but had only 2 4-stars, sooo I knew it wouldn’t cut it.

FINAL NIGHT.

I’m down to T11, and everybody else already did 2.3M-sprints some hours earlier, and have considerably slowed down.

I, on the other, was about to go to sleep. Yes, I, the current T11, was about to let the others pull away. All I could do was believe in the Math at that point, because let me tell you-

I had 105k challenge points left. That’s 3.4M event points I had yet to sprint.

This was during the final morning, 9 hours before event ended. When I woke up that morning, my heart was pounding like crazy. What if everybody has pulled ahead?

When I finally checked, most of the T10′s were still in the 17M-range. Itsuki was on T10, and he was only 500k away. I knew at that point that my chances were pretty good; however, I shut up about it, set my comment to “Now Playing: Running in the 90′s”, and got to work.

There was nothing else I could to but consume all the CP I had left. No more tracking. A literal 5-hour non-stop sprint to 19.2M points. If they can still catch up even after they’ve already expended their CP yesterday, then maybe I don’t deserve this T10 after all.

All I need to do was beat one of them. It was me or them.

Holy shi-

I wasn’t out of the woods yet, had to make sure at least one of them didn’t overtake me. Of course that was more up to them, since I didn’t have any strength left (my thumb stopped working at that point, no seriously, it’s still not working properly even today). I also didn’t have any significant stars left.

I managed to sneak in a few songs, but that was it. I was done. The others managed to close the gap, but I stayed in T6.

And then the event was over.

I fucking did it.

I would later learn that this was the bloodiest (Challenge Live) event in the history of ENdori. In one redditor’s words, I “ ...sure picked a hell of a time to go for it.”

I had no choice. This is Megane Ran we’re talking about. <3

I had some idea tbh, because I managed to read a tweet in the middle of the event, that “this was one lit T10″. Apparently we were on track to beat the previous record-holder, which was Sayo’s Umbrella event.

I’m... really glad to have been part of this event. I feel so darn proud of myself. >:3

But I couldn’t have done it without the help of the Grand Room. Seriously, I only played in the Grand Room.

Would I ever do this again? Probably not. This was the only event that I knew I really wanted to go for, and I don’t see that changing any time soon. Maybe I’ll get a couple of T100′s in the future, but that’s it. ^^

There will be 2 new worlds. World 1 is Glimmerbrook, where you will be able to live and move your Sims in. World 2 is The Magic Realm. You are not able to officially move into this world, but there is nothing stopping you from putting a bed on the lot. ;D

((Want to be part of our adventures?  Check out this page!)) Coming off the back of their latest foray into danger, the Eight Winds found themselves finally free of all the things that came with it. The repentant villain Kazuya slain, the scheming witch Kathereiza in the custody of the Ironclaws...the Winds found themselves some time to rest. Of course, they were mercenaries so it was only a matter of time before Wemrys Quintos found his group a new job. Find one he did, one he said might be a little less on the side of putting not only themselves in danger, but keeping people like Lady Llinos Silvernail out of harm’s way as well. This time the group faced a disappearance. Lady Dowager Kikio Kio, the Lady Silvernail’s adoptive grandmother, had approached Quintos with a job opportunity. One she said she would much prefer the group to do to make up for getting Lady Silvernail captured during the previous mission.

The merchant Jeqel Araqel had gone missing and the Dowager wished him found. The man was a relative of her late husband and a good man. Good...but not without his faults. She believed he might have gotten himself in the midst of some problems due to his addiction to gambling and some group may be holding him. Assuming the worst, the Dowager only asked the Winds to bring back news of what had transpired if they could not bring him back alive and well.

Thusly did the Eight Winds Mercenary Company set out on their next task. They would scour the man’s home, finding few clues except that he’d been neglecting his business for well over two weeks at the point they had arrived. Upon opening a back door in the abode, the group was assailed by a construct of Allagan make. While they were able to subdue the machina, the group had no clue why it would have even been there.

This is where a small Allagan node that had been recovered and repaired by the Blue Hunter of Khokanchin Mercantile came in. The device had been following Quintos around for the duration of the job and seemed to just be a pest...until it came to the Allagan construct they fought. It scanned the memory banks of the machina and found not only its point of origin but that the merchant had been there recently, that Jeqel Araqel had left the trap in place to dissuade anyone from following him.

Some few suns later, the group once again set out for the coordinates that had been mapped out. They were to head to Mor Dhona, to an archeological dig site that had recently been abandoned. Or at least...it was said to be. None of the archeologists that had been working there had been seen for some time and when the Winds arrived they found it in much that state. Abandoned workstations and tools, research notes left behind and half written. There were no bodies though...only the remains of more constructs like the ones the Winds had fought.

As the group moved deeper into the tunnels dug out by the archeologists, a mechanical voice greeted them to what apparently was a research facility. They were unable to glean much more from the voice, however as it encountered some manner of error and would take some time to reestablish the holographic form it promised. The Winds simply did not have the time to wait and bypassed the computer system.

This led to them moving blindly through the facility. Well...somewhat blindly. The Allagan Node that had accompanied them before was with them once again and opening doors for them to proceed through remotely as if guiding them though the node could not say where as it stated corruption in its own memory banks. The group almost immediately came against resistance though.

A multi-racial group of people were found milling about on a platform they attempted to cross. Each of them wore the same plain uniform. The missing archeologists, but with no sign of the merchant. They weren’t acting right either. The people seemed almost preoccupied as they aimlessly moved around the room for no rhyme or reason. Once the Winds came closer though they moved in unison, attacking the group with the tools they still held in their hands.

They moved like a hivemind the Winds quickly found, covering eachother’s openings with a precision unheard of in even the most seasoned soldiers. They weren’t built or armed for combat though and the skilled Mercenaries were able to subdue them, doing their best to keep from killing any.

Baffled though they were, the Winds didn’t have time to contemplate as the Node hurried them on and an alarum went off. The same mechanical voice warned of a containment breach and the Winds hurried following the Node’s directions to the source of the breach, hoping their merchant wasn’t at the bottom of this all.

Instead when they arrived the Winds found a large group of adventurers they did not recognize already trying to seal off the area with explosives. Confusion set in as more voices soon came from behind as well. These ones the Winds recognized as they approached (despite an initial order from Quintos to take up defensive positions as they were surrounded on both sides). The Ironclaws had also arrived for some reason or another...but the three groups could not contemplate this happenstance for long.

From the far end of the room three figures appeared, speaking ominous words of warning. The group of adventurers that had arrived first warned the others that these were apparently Primals. Each group immediately was on their guard as the figures referred to the collective as their next potential ‘dreamers’. Having no other choice and not wanting to test the theory of whatever these three might be, the groups ran detonating explosives behind them to seal off the area and climbing on board the Ironclaws’ airship.

The three groups tersely coexisted on the airship as they witnessed three beams of light escape high into the air above the former archeological site and fly off in separate directions. This left all three groups to wonder...where do they go from here? ((Screenshot courtesy of @songstresswendy ))

The ongoing dilemma that is Times columnist Bret Stephens

Note: This is something I originally wrote for the daily newsletter at the Columbia Journalism Review, where I’m the chief digital writer

The holiday season and the arrival of a new year are often cause for reflection and soul-searching. Whether any of the senior management at the New York Times spent the holidays engaged in this kind of activity is unknown, but many critics have made it abundantly clear that they would like them to, if only to explain why the newspaper allows op-ed columnist Bret Stephens to write the things he does. As most people were winding down their work week and preparing to turn out the lights on 2019, Stephens chose to lob a hand grenade into the Twitter-sphere with a column entitled The Secrets of Jewish Genius. In it, the Times columnist posed — and then tried to answer — the question of why there have been so many noteworthy Jewish scientists and leading thinkers like Einstein. As he put it: “How is it that a people who never amounted even to one-third of 1 percent of the world’s population contributed so seminally to so many of its most pathbreaking ideas and innovations?”

In the end, Stephens comes to the conclusion that Jewish genius “operates differently” from the intelligence displayed by others. It is, he says, “prone to question the premise and rethink the concept; to ask why (or why not?) as often as how; to see the absurd in the mundane and the sublime in the absurd. These differences, according to Stephens, stem from cultural factors, as well as a focus on questioning authority. But those ideas weren’t what triggered a multi-day backlash against Stephens or the Times (although many argued they were also wrong-headed). What drove the wave of criticism was that in the course of making this argument, Stephens cited a paper he said supported the theory that Ashkenazi Jews (i.e., those with a primarily European background) have higher IQs than the average population. Within hours of the column being posted, multiple people had pointed out that one of the co-authors of the paper had expressed racist views and had ties to white supremacist organizations, and that the journal the paper was published in was formerly known as Eugenics Review.

On Sunday the 30th, two days after the column originally appeared, the Twitter account for the Times opinion section announced that the piece had “been edited to remove a reference to a paper widely disputed as advancing a racist hypothesis.” The column was also updated with a long editor’s note (at the top of the piece, rather than at the bottom, as some notes often are), which pointed out that the reference to the paper had been removed and why. The note went on to say that “Mr. Stephens was not endorsing the study or its authors’ views, but it was a mistake to cite it uncritically” and admitted that the effect of doing so was to “leave an impression with many readers that Mr. Stephens was arguing that Jews are genetically superior [but] that was not his intent. The column was also edited to remove all references to Ashkenazi Jews, something that was a central part of Stephens’ argument in the original column, but these removals weren’t mentioned in the editor’s note.

For some, including Slate writer Ashley Feinberg and Judd Legum, who writes the progressive newsletter Popular Information, the paper’s explanation was weak at best. As Feinberg pointed out using a screenshot, Stephens originally wrote: “The common answer is that Jews are, or tend to be, smart. When it comes to Ashkenazi Jews, it’s true.” As a number of people argued, if the phrase “it’s true,” followed by a reference to the study, doesn’t amount to an endorsement of a paper’s findings, it’s hard to think of what would. As debate about the column continued, it widened to include the editorial judgment of Times op-ed editor James Bennet (something that has been questioned before, both externally and internally). As Vice editor Tim Marchman put it: “There’s a level on which this is trivial, but also one on which the most important media operation in the United States publishing grotesque things and then not accounting for their handling of them even in brutally humiliating editors’ notes is not trivial at all.” BuzzFeed media editor and correction expert Craig Silverman said the note sounded like Times editors “making excuses and covering for Stephens.”

Several Times contributors also criticized the paper’s decision to run the column, including author and Times‘ magazine writer Jody Rosen, who said: “Speaking as both an Ashkenazi Jew and a NYT contributor, I don’t think eugenicists should be op-ed columnists.” Former CNN anchor and talk-show host Soledad O’Brien wondered why more Times staffers and contributors weren’t speaking up: “I think it’s interesting how there are so few people at (or affiliated with) the New York Times who said anything about Bret Stevens column publicly,” she wrote. “I mean, at some point isn’t there a line where you say—“yeah, the eugenics thing. I gotta stand up and say something”? New York magazine and HuffPost contributor Yashar Ali echoed this sentiment, saying: “I get why reporters at the NYT (or any news org) aren’t going to publicly criticize their colleagues for a bad tweet or a story… but the Bret Stephens thing is terrible and should require his NYT colleagues to speak up.”

Don’t Boycott, Shame: Calls to boycott the Times because of the column miss the mark, writes Siva Vaidhyanathan, a media studies professor at the University of Virginia and the author of Antisocial Media: How Facebook Disconnects Us and Undermines Democracy. “A fake boycott of the Times would be meaningless at best, counterproductive at worst,” Vaidhyanathan argues. The only reasonable and potentially effective response, he says, is to “push at what the leaders of the Times care about as much as their revenue: their reputation for seriousness and responsibility. Shaming the Times works better than threatening the Times.

Tapped Out of Ideas: Politico media writer Jack Shafer argued that Stephen’s column was a result not of some ideological bias but of a desire to make his column more interesting and controversial, in order to draw in more readers. “The columnist’s duty has always been to stimulate and infuriate his readers, thereby opening their minds to new vistas. But in the Internet era, that’s not always how it turns out. Readers are already overstimulated and showboating moves like Stephens’—grabbing the third-rail of race-science without first donning insulated gloves—can end in disaster.”

Palace Intrigue: Indulging in the kind of Kremlinology specific to the goings on at the Times, some saw hints of a broader strategy in James Bennet’s support of writers like Stephens (as they did in the decision to anchor a major reporting effort on privacy in the Opinion section rather than news): Namely, a desire to impress publisher Arthur Gregg Sulzberger, and thus to gain his favor when it comes to choosing a successor for current executive editor Dean Baquet, who is expected to retire soon. Bennet’s main competition, according to some Times-watchers, is Metro editor Cliff Levy, although managing editor Joe Kahn is also said to be in the mix.

New York Times economics and business reporter Ben Casselman posted a Twitter thread looking at the diversity (or lack thereof) in the sources he has quoted in his stories. Casselman said that one of his goals for the year was to be more aware of the diversity of sources he was using in his reporting, and so he tracked every source for the year and provided some statistics on how he did. “This is the first year I’ve tracked this systematically, so I can’t compare to prior years,” he said. “But I suspect the act of tracking this led to more diversity in my source list, which was part of the goal.”

In its first transparency report, the popular Chinese-owned video-sharing app TikTok claims that it has had zero takedown requests from the Chinese government, according to a report from The Verge. “The video sharing app, owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance, claims it did not receive a single takedown request from Communist Party of China in the first half of 2019,” the Verge story says. In September, a report from The Washington Post suggested that TikTok was censoring content related to the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, likely to appease the Chinese government. TikTok denied the allegations, but US legislators have asked for a probe of the national security implications of the company’s business anyway.

The BBC is hoping to help improve the representation of women within student journalism by sharing its own methodology relating to on-air gender balance, according to a report from the Press Gazette. The 50:50 Project involves teams from within the BBC recording their own statistics on gender balance and the proportion of women appearing in their radio, TV and online programming. Seven higher education institutions have agreed to partner with the project and use its methodology in their journalism courses so that students keep track of the gender balance in their reporting.

An editor of the University of Massachusetts student newspaper in Boston can’t be held liable for reporting false information from police blotter, according to a decision by the Supreme Judicial Court. Justice Barbara Lenk wrote that the reporting was covered by the “fair report privilege,” which protects the right of the press to report on anything said during a judicial proceeding or through an official action. “Once police undertake an official response to a complaint, both that response and the allegations that gave rise to it fall within the fair report privilege,” Lenk said.

Mehdi Hasan of The Intercept writes about a Face the Nation interview that host Margaret Brennan did with Ivanka Trump: “For much of the interview, the “Face The Nation” host treated Ivanka not as a senior White House adviser and one of the president’s closest confidantes, but as a cross between a “first daughter” invited onto the show to offer insights into her dad’s feelings and a political pundit invited onto the show to offer random observations on the impeachment process,” Hasan wrote.

Nicole Hannah Jones, the architect of the 1619 Project on race at The New York Times, wrote a thread on Twitter about her struggles to find a way to write about race during her career in journalism: “In 2009, I nearly left journalism. I was punished for wanting to write about race. My pitches were shut down and I could not get a story on the front page of my regional newspaper,” Jones wrote. “Newsrooms were bleeding staff so I had nowhere to go. I felt had to quit or lose my sanity.”

University of Penn professor Sarah Jackson says that despite a lot of the negativity about the influence that Twitter has on culture, a lot of good has come from it. “Twitter is now better known as a home for unforgiving criticism, stripped of the politeness that can soften real-life interactions,” Jackson wrote. “Despite it all, the way we use Twitter made this decade better. As we enter 2020, powerful individuals and societal problems can no longer avoid public scrutiny. Many people who lacked public platforms 10 years ago — the young and members of marginalized groups in particular — are speaking up, insisting on being heard.”

Journalist Heather Bryant, who runs a collaborative journalism project called Project Facet, writes in her 2020 forecast for the Nieman Lab that some kinds of journalism may need to be jettisoned. “As we continue to grapple with the questions of how to make journalism sustainable, we must also grapple with what kind of journalism should be sustained,” she says. “Is it the institutions, many of which are legacy newsrooms with storied histories and shamefully incremental movement in the diversity of their teams and a myopic view of their proximity to and enabling of power structures invested in the status quo?”

In an interview with First Draft, investigative journalist and crowdsourced journalism pioneer Eliot Higgins of Bellingcat argues that people are still failing to come to grips with the reality of how disinformation works. “The public continues to fail to engage with how disinformation is being spread. It’s quite frustrating,” he said. “We often operate under the assumption that state actors are pushing all of this disinformation, but that’s not the case. It originates from networks of websites and individuals that have been developing this kind of ‘alt-media conspiracy land’ online presence. This narrative [of state actors] is often pushed, while I continue to see a failure from organisations to engage with this topic and even understand the issue at its most basic level.”

Alicia ultra trail run now internationally rated

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Dec. 28 (PIA) -- Expect to be running or scampering along the world-rated international trail runners when negotiating the steep ascents and the tricky descents of the first trail ultramarathon in Bohol: The Alicia Ultra 2020, happening on Feb. 23, 2020.

The Alicia Ultra 50KM has been rated under the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) as a qualifying race for all international races, runners earning ITRA points that will be used to qualify for the Ultra Trail Mt. Fuji in Japan and the world championship of trail running, Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) in France.

A first for Bohol, this inaugural ultramarathon also offers 25-kilometer Trail Run and 12-kilometer Fun Trail, according to race organizers, RaceYaya.

Owing to the distance and the terrain, the 50KM Trail Ultra will start on Sunday, 1:30 a.m. at the Alicia Gymnasium and follows the established roads which occasionally break off into the notorious Alicia trails, runners in this category will have completed the route by late afternoon.

The 25KM Trail Run also leaves at 3:30 a.m., while the 12KM Fun Trail will start 5:30 a.m. and hopefully finish before lunch.

Due to the highly technical climbs, all participants for the 50KM must have finished at least a 21KM trail run earlier to be able to join the race.

The harder trail courses are set over the green rolling hills of Brgy. Cambaol, where the huge part of The Alicia Panoramic Park (TAPP) also known as the Binabaje Hills are, through vast oil palm plantations, river banks and crossings, rice paddies, and off to the BatongPuti Cliffside Park past the highway to the lofty mountains of Cagongcagong and Del Monte, down to the plains and to the finish line.

Organizers said the highlight of the race is the chance to gaze upon the panoramic views of the Binabaje Hills on sunrise, even though the highest point of the route is just about 350 meters above sea level.

But, no matter how low the hills are, the short steep ascents, the slippery descents, and sun-exposed terrain offer enough challenge even to the most seasoned trail runner, organizers assured.

For those taking the 25-kilometer and the 12-kilometer fun trail, no pre-qualifications are required.

While the finishers in the ultramarathon can be qualified for the other ITRA races, organizers have yet to determine the equivalent points the finishers can earn for racing here.

Registration for early birds has since opened in November 2019 and are now on regular rates at P2,500 for the 50 kilometers, P1,800 for the 25 kilometers, and P1,500 for the 12-kilometer fun trail. 

The registration fee includes the Alicia Ultra fully-sublimated event singlet, race bib, race timing chip, Alicia ultra-limited edition Multi-functional Headwear, Alicia ultra draw string bag and post-race meal.

Official race finishers will receive a finisher’s medal, finisher’s shirt for the 50KM and 25KM only, and ITRA points and UTMB qualification points to 50KM official finishers.

Men and women podium finishers for each category will receive trophies, sponsor items, and cash.

As of Dec. 28, only 154 slots remain in the 50-kilometer ultra, 133 slots for the 25KM and 179 slots for the 12KM fun trail.

The Sims 4 gets a huge November 12th update, full patch notes revealed

Electronic Arts and Maxis have released a huge new update for The Sims 4. The November 12th update brings a few new Holiday items available for you in Create A Sim. Moreover, it brings a new Multi Story Column feature to help you build tall columns for a grand entrance or interior.

It’s also worth noting that this update adds a UI Scaling setting in the options panel. In addition, a New Main Menu Message is now available on load to easily help you find the latest and greatest content from The Sims 4.

Maxis has also updated the Holiday Celebration Pack with some new children and toddler clothing. Moreover, the Hip Hop Radio Station is now available for everyone.

Naturally, this update also fixes numerous bugs and glitches that the game’s fanbase has reported.

Drinking animation is performed by Sims when Sims drink potion of curse cleaning to remove curse.

Animation for the teleport is no longer getting cut off.

Orb Familiars will not pop and jump from their locations while following their Sims out of water.
