Taken on 2021 11th December, it is the only worm in Sweden that is not a worm, the common slow worm (Anguis fragilis), or kopparödlan. This display even has an embryo and egg next to adults. Though they look like snakes, they are in fact legless lizards that evolved a semi-fossorial lifestyle. Their main defense against predators is shedding their tails, which grow back shorter than the one lost. I love museums! I had too much fun pulling specimens today for next week's Dissecting Dinosaurs homeschool class. . In our Education Collection, we have several natural history specimens without data, so not of scientific value anymore, but GREAT for teaching. Pictured here, top photo, is a Common merganser. Bottom photo is a Cardinal. . Next week homeschool kids will be learning about dinosaurs by dissecting real quail specimens and observing avian anatomy in comparison to non-avian dinosaur features. Taken on 2021 11th December, these are preserved viviparous lizards (Zootoca vivipara), or skogsödlor. These are the northern most land reptiles in the world. They get their name because they often give live-birth, though they can lay eggs. This adaption is useful, especially here in Sweden, where eggs would risk freezing over. They can even survive freezing over and come back to life during the thaw.
