Something I’ve been thinking about regarding politics: it’s distinct from some of the other humanities in that it is both a field of study and a particular skill. There is the study of political science and there is the actual management of a political entity, right? But there’s more - while other fields have this division within them between the academia and the skill, within politics there seems to be very little overlap between them. Graduate with a masters degree in mechanical engineering and you should be able to build a fairly competent bridge; learn music theory for a decade and I would be surprised if you couldn’t play an impressive rendition of Für Elise. But if someone has devoted themselves to studying all major political thinkers and the history of state management, there is no guarantee any attempt by them to actually run a government won’t end in complete disaster. Why? 

There’s probably many reasons, but the major one I believe is the most obvious: politics is in fact quite complicated. To prepare yourself to understand the impact of just one policy, you need to at least be aware of its macro-and microeconomic impacts, how various cultural communities will interpret it, how the subdivisions of government will interact with it, how it will be actually implemented by the many elements of the bureaucratic class, etc. And all of these factors are themselves constantly shifting and moving! It seems to be an impossible task to understand the impact of a single law. Then of course this is just one atom of a vast political system, one in which the average voter typically has next to no control over. Once you factor in political parties, ideologies, and individual representatives, it becomes apparent that the distance between the average citizen and the engine of the state is a great crevice. 

To be clear, this isn’t the part of the post where I turn around and exclaim “see! This is why we need anarcho-syndicalism, democratic centralism, or any other leftist experiment”. Just because electoral democracy doesn’t function the way it claims to doesn’t mean it serves no purpose. One thing which is necessary to understand, however, is that the best metaphor for the body politic is not a human being (it’s nothing so complex). It is at best something akin to a paramecium, a rudimentary organism incapable of anything even approaching thought. An election is a form of avoidance reaction. It is a means not of careful ruminations, but of instinctual reaction. When most voters are content, the body moves on in its course. When they reach a certain level of discontent, the body reverses its course. That’s all. Talks of liberalism, socialism, conservatism, communism, etc are just rhetorical tools used to create common languages to better sort out interpersonal dialogue. Most seem to over exaggerate their importance. If politics is a science, then it is still the science of Aristotle, not of Newton.

Okclick Mystery – my new mysterious mouse

Time has come to update computer mouse. And, for a long time, I have a powerful mouse. Defender Warhead. It is absolutely true, it works for more than 5 years, and less than 10 years. Let it be about 7-8 years everything works all right. All that happened, in a last time – it is broken mouse wheel. And that’s all the problems.  Everything works fines, except wheel. Good mouse. I like it a lot, about how it looks and works.

But, because of middle mouse wheel, I make a decision to change mouse. I search for a different mouse. And this time I choose, Okclick. Okclick Mystery. It is black and pretty heavy by weight.  And all the time it shines with different colors. It is pretty big mouse. Middle size, or big size, it will be better check for yourself, it depends on your taste. All these things – about side buttons, and size more or less Dpi also exists. It is done everything comfortable to use.

Buttons with make dpi more or less of the mouse – it is very good solution. Buttons are big and very easy to push. Mouse is gamer mouse type. So, that’s why so many modes of dpi.  From small to big.

I say, as a single part. That mouse is shining with colors all the time. That is especially cool, if you are gamer, which is a big fan of playing at nights. Mouse is shining, come on man! All the time. And skull at the top part. This mouse is for some time with me, already. And it is all positive, all the time!

Plastic is smooth. Mouse itself is black. And it has a backlight. As it has some parts with lighting, which are under the lights. It is lines in a shell. At the borders of the shell. There are some empty parts at the top, near the mouse wheel, and most part that is under the light - it is skull. Skull is at the lights all the time. In darkness of the night, such mouse will shine bright.

I think, that gamers like such things. I remember myself, how I like to play videogames by evening and in the night. To play hard in videogames, you know. So, I remember this tradition, right now. After I become an owner of this mouse. And this is a shining one! So, it is nice to look how it shines in the darkness.  Gamer paradise, you know. I think, mouse will be very positive for gamers and pc games fans.

Mouse can change its resolution by buttons at the top part. It has following resolutions -800/1600/2400/3200 dpi. In total, it has 7 buttons. Mouse is with wire. It is connected via usb wire. From website OKLICK you can download universal mouse utility. Oklick Mouse. Today it has version 1.5. Utility can be with Russian or English language. And dark green background color. It has two modes for mouse – for 4 and 6 buttons. And, I guess, left mouse is not taken into account. Because it is for control. And all other buttons you can assign for some action. Macros, there is menu. And, mainly, it is rather simple utility. Easy to understand. Everything is simple and clear. For those who wants to adjust something. Mainly, you can use mouse without this app. It is only for program buttons as you wish, if you want it.

I use this mouse for myself every day. It has a rather big weight. And for games I use this mouse. And for everyday tasks. Internet, programming, different app. Word, for example. Everything is positive! I am happy with this mouse! So, this is such mysterious, well made, mystical mouse!

I cannot stress enough how good Notepad++ is.

Prev mentioned tabs—that's only the beginning. It has an incredible selection of views options, including all sorts of window and dock options as well as a complete style editor. That style editor allows you to do some incredible language-specific highlighting and formatting, so whatever you're working in is easy to read.

For technical folks like me, it allows you to "tail" a file (to watch it change in real time—perfect for watching an application's log file.) It has built-in macro recording, encoding conversion tools, EOL settings, and more.

The plugin library is enormous. Most are tech-oriented, but they include some absolutely wild tools you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere, and even a music player!

My favorite feature, though? Alt+F3 searches Wikipedia for your selection.

Week 13- Genre

This week, we started a new unit (Media Language: Macro elements), and learned about Genre!

Genre is a way of grouping media by shared features, like storylines, settings, or characters, so we know what kind of experience to expect. It helps the audience choose what they like and lets creators shape their content to fit or challenge those expectations into those specific categories. Media forms such as film, TV, radio, magazines, newspapers, video games, and music, all have their individual and varied categories of texts within them.

Genres involve a wide range, like action, comedy, drama, romance, horror, thriller, documentary, etc.

Newspapers have 3 main genres: tabloids, mid-market tabloids and broadsheets

Genre has its own set of conventions that make media texts easier to recognize. These conventions come from audience expectations built through what they have seen before.

There are certain elements that help us identify specific genres. Here are the elements found in a typical romance movie:

Setting – Cosy cafés (e.g. Before Sunrise), small towns (e.g. Sweet Home Alabama), big cities filled with chance encounters (e.g. Notting Hill), or romantic holiday spots (e.g. The Holiday).

Iconography – Flowers, handwritten letters, soft lighting, love songs, meaningful glances, and heartwarming locations like parks or candle-lit restaurants.

Narrative – In most romance films, two people meet, sometimes by chance and sometimes through conflict. They grow closer, face challenges or misunderstandings, and eventually come together in an emotional or heartfelt resolution.

Characters – The hopeless romantic (e.g. Lara Jean in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before), the charming love interest (e.g. Henry in 50 First Dates), the best friend with wise advice (e.g. Rosie in Love, Rosie), and sometimes the “one that got away”!

GENRE HYBRIDITY

Genre hybridity simply means mixing different genres in one story. This helps creators attract a wider audience by combining elements from each genre that appeal to different tastes.

Some common genre blends include:

Romance + Comedy (e.g. 10 Things I Hate About You)

Action + Adventure (e.g. The Mummy)

Drama + Fantasy (e.g. The Shape of Water)
