He wondered if it had looked like running. Which it was. He had needed time away from the others to feel normal or almost normal, which is why he had chosen to go to UCLA. He had no illusions about making accounting a career. He was aware, however dimly, that the whole superhero gig would be a hard one to shake for long. Hell it was why he was back here on the east coast.

It felt a little uneasy being back at Xavier's, like clothes that both did and didn't quite fit right. But it wasn't as if he could go stay with his parents on Long Island. Not anymore.

He waved at the other mutant feeling a little awkward and out of place. "Long time no see," He said.

He exhaled slowly, like maybe if he got the breath out right, he could get the words right too. “Rogue…” He said her name like it was a lifeline. Soft. Careful. Meant to anchor, not pull.

“I do understand what the risk is. I don’t understand all of it—because I’ll never know what it’s like to live with it the way you do—but don’t think I don’t see it. Don’t think I haven’t thought about it. I have.”

He took a half-step forward—just enough to close the distance a little without pushing. “And I’m still here.” His hands stayed at his sides. No reaching. No pressure. Just presence.

“I care about you. Enough to know this isn’t gonna be easy. Enough to know I might get hurt, yeah. But hurting alone—watching you carry all of this by yourself, watching you shut yourself off because you think that’s safer for me? That hurts too, Rogue.”

His voice dipped, quieter now. Not pleading. Just honest. “I’d rather take the risk with you than live safe without you.” A pause. Then, a small, crooked smile—wry, but warm, like he couldn’t help himself.

“And anyway, I’m pretty sure I’ve survived worse. I went through puberty in upstate New York in a building full of telepaths. If I can survive that, I can survive this.” He looked at her then. Really looked. Like he wasn’t afraid of what she might do, or say, or even what she was afraid she might be. “You don’t have to touch me today. Or tomorrow. Or ever. But let me stay. Just stay. That’s all I’m asking.”

Rogue waits for a moment, hoping he makes some kind of amendment to that statement because she's so sure he can't truly understand what this risk is. When he doesn't, she shakes her head, already coming up with a million reasons why that's an insane thing to say. But he seems so genuine about it and hurting his feelings is not her goal.

"Bobby... it's not that simple. I could really hurt you and it'd be an accident, but I'd never forgive myself..."

She wraps her arms around herself, closing herself off. Her gaze drops to the ground, afraid to fully see his reaction to her words.

"I care about you so I need you to understand what that risk is."
