This is a very pertinent quote from Malcolm X: "If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." Just replace newspaper with any type of media outlet. We really do need to be very careful about which news & information outlets we trust. More importantly, we shouldn't be dependent on just one news source. The more varied the sources, the better chances we have at gleaning the truth. If our mix of news & information outlets are from independent entities, we substantially increase the likelihood of reaching the truth. As a rule of thumb, corporate & state controlled entities, are a lot more likely to be factually inaccurate. We have to ensure that we teach our kids to be critical thinkers. We have to help them understand that the truth is a rare commodity, in this age of information overload. The lies are being pushed out at such a ferocious volume & speed, and from so many different sources, that it tends to exhaust & overwhelm us. Doesn't matter whether the news source is right leaning or left, they each have their own spin on the truth. Most often, they spin significantly enough, to ensure that the truth is no longer present 😳😵. #howdoyousay English ➡️ Truth. Arabic ➡️ حق/صدق (sduq/huq). Urdu ➡️ سچ (such). How do you say truth in your language & what are your trusted news sources? What do you think about @DemocracyNow? Samina Ali, author of "Madras on Rainy Days," talks about how important it is for Muslim-American women to learn how to claim a feminism for themselves. It’s midday on the Downtown Express.
I’m en route to see my therapist I’ve reconnected with realizing I need someone with brains to talk to.
Last time after I said how I now follow Chuck the Bassett Hound on Instagram, he agreed it was a good move to come back.
My focus is on a pretty young Muslim girl who looks as if she could use a little help. Her skirt is much too long scraping the floor,…
One Wish: Fatima al-Fihri and the World's Oldest University by M. O. Yuksel Do you ever read a book and instantly know who you want to recommend it to? That's me with this wonderful book by the author of last year's beyond-gorgeous In My Mosque, and I'm going to give it to her as soon as we get back from break. There are so many amazing Muslim authors writing phenomenal novels and picture books - but on the biography side, I don't often see a lot of female Muslim heroes highlighted. Malala Yousafzai is everywhere, and she is awesome, but there needs to be more and wider representation in biographies of all the brilliant Muslim women who have done so much in science, art, education, and more. Enter this wonderful biography of Fatima al-Fihri, the creator of the oldest existing university in the world. Fatima cherished education throughout her life, and dreamed of creating a school for everyone, free of charge, where anyone could study and achieve their dreams. After losing her home as a child to war, establishing a new life as a refugee, becoming a successful merchant, and losing her father and husband, Fatima decided to use her fortune to build the school she had always envisioned - one that would welcome all people, regardless of gender, wealth, or refugee status. According to the back matter, this university, among others of its kind, inspired Western universities like Oxford and Harvard, and facilitated academic and cultural exchange throughout the world. Serving as university, mosque, and library, her school cultivated scholars since 859 BCE - and still does, today. Now to write a note about this book for my student!
