Crossposting some recs from my DW! You can see everything I’ve bookmarked so far on Pinboard, but I mostly wanted to shout out the three amazing gifts I received: the perfect crime (Lupin): An amazing vid for the French show Lupin! The song is absolutely pitch perfect—it has a funky '70s beat, breaks down all the parts of a heist, and feels like it could come out of a movie like The Thomas Crown Affair or Taking of Pelham One Two Three or Inside Man. The vid captures everything I love about the show, both the clever crimes and quick costume changes and the emotional heart of the story about Assane and his family and his quest for vengeance for his wrongfully accused father. This is just a vid with a lot of style! Friday I'm In Love (My Beautiful Laundrette): Super charming vid about one of my favorite movies. The song is also one of my favorites, and I thought it lent itself perfectly to the source! The repeating structure and different moods of the song let the vidder pull out many different character threads (Tania! Nasser and Rachel's romance!) and moments, both good and bad, from the film. Meticulous Bird (Mustang): I was so thrilled and surprised to receive a vid for this beautiful Turkish film about five teenage sisters. This is a stunning vid that captures their love and defiance and dread as adulthood and restrictive traditional gender roles close in on them. The repeating refrain of "I take my body back" gives me the chills every time.

What is!!! Your favorite Royai fanfic????

Hello! Excellent question! I have a couple all time favorites, which you may have already read since they’re some iconic pieces of Royai history imo ;)

delicate by @lantur (ao3): A wonderful, long, in depth riza character study, with some lovely royai on the side. My unofficial canon, because of how perfect the characterization and writing is.

We That Are Young by Stoplight Delight (fanfiction.net): a super old fanfic I read when I first joined the fandom that I still love :) it’s a sort of canon divergent sort of canon compliant account of Roy and Riza’s lives, spanning from when they were children to the start of the anime.

Buried Alive by @rizahawkaye (ao3): another one I read when first joining the fandom. Riza fakes her own death to infiltrate a terrorist organization. The storytelling is incredible and there’s lots of great twists and turns (as well as some delicious royai drama ofc)

And lastly Cessation- also by @rizahawkaye (fanfiction.net): a haunting little oneshot that has always stuck with me, about riza and roy reuniting one last time before roy is executed for his crimes in ishval.

Mustang is a film directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven and written by Deniz Gamze Ergüven and Alice Winocour.

Synopsis:

Mustang follows the lives of 5 young sisters in Turkey as they face the challenges of growing up as girls in a conservative Turkish society. After an scandalized incident where the girls were innocently playing at the beach, their guardians decide to start marrying them off.

When I was around 14, my mom used to work at the cultural center in my hometown, Juárez. They had a month long film festival where they screened films from all over the world, Mustang being one of them. As an angsty teen, I was resistant to attending the screenings and deemed them boring. Until I watched Mustang.

Mustang is a story of girlhood, sisterhood, resistance, and strength. It's a whirlwind of emotions. It's a film I always go back to. Most recently, the subject that stands out to me the most is the forced death of girlhood and push into womanhood. The sexualization of your actions even as a young girl that shatters your innocence and welcomes you into a world where your actions have consequences out of your control, yet you are still made responsible for them. Such is the case in the film.

I find the film to be visually beautiful. The moment that is the catalyst for the girls' arranged marriages is a beautiful and fun moment between the sisters and their friends by the beach. It has multiple moments where the emotions are highly contrasted between one scene and the next. Gamze encapsulated the beautifully tragic complexities of being a girl through all five sisters. Their different yet similar personalities and reactions to what they go through showcases different facets of femininity.

The film has been compared to Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides multiple times. This article does a great job of describing their similarities and differences.
