En 1978 Madonna dejó la escuela y se trasladó a la ciudad de Nueva York con 35 dólares en el bolsillo, estudió danza bajo la tutela de la bailarina y coreógrafa estadounidense Martha Graham, también comenzó a trabajar como bailarina sustituta para otros artistas.

En abril de 1979 Madonna con 20 años conoció en una fiesta a Dan Gilroy, un músico que formaba parte de la banda Breakfast Club, a la que ella se unió como baterista, un día ella viajando en autobús con un suéter de Betty Boop Dan le tomo varias fotos, no fue amor a primera vista, pero hubo algo en la actitud y los looks de ambos que causó una atracción mutua, lo cierto es que la relación no duró mucho tiempo.

Gilroy se había entusiasmado demasiado con la relación y sobre todo con la idea de formar a Madonna desde el punto de vista musical ya que había comenzado a enseñarle a tocar instrumentos; sin embargo, algo puso un freno en la relación.

Para mayo de 1979 Madonna recibe un ofrecimiento de dos productores para trabajar junto al éxito del cantante francés Patrick Hernandez, a pesar de los pedidos de Dan para que se quedara en New York y siguieran la relación, sin dudarlo decide marcharse a probar suerte a Paris.

Su experiencia fue desastrosa, durante 3 meses actuaba como bailarina para el cantante Hernandez en su gira de 1979, aparte de eso no hizo nada a nivel artístico y ella sentía que cada día de pasaba perdía el tiempo, así que un a finales de julio día decide regresar a New York junto a Dan, aquí comienza el segundo momento de la pareja.

Ella se integra como cantante guitarrista y baterista en “Breakfast Club” y así se desarrollaron durante algún tiempo como grupo; sin embargo, para 1980 Madonna necesitaba algo más, quería despegar y sentía que detrás de una batería no lo lograría, y así decide dar por finalizada la relación con Dan y formar su propia agrupación.

Ese año con su entonces novio Stephen Bray como baterista, formaron la banda “Emmy”, su música impresionó al DJ y productor Mark Kamins, quien arregló un encuentro entre Madonna y Seymour Stein, fundador de la discográfica Sire Records, en octubre de 1982 publico su primer sencillos “Everybody”, Bray se convertiría en productor de su segundo álbum como solista que la lanzó al estrellato Like a Virgin en 1984.
