when the sun goes out
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's fanfiction writer appreciation day! This year I made a copy of when the sun goes out for @travelingneuritis. It's a modern-with-magic MDZS AU where Wei Wuxian uses technology to work with resentful energy. You should all go out and read it immediately. I really love how it hits all the important character beats, but doesn't rehash the plot. Plus, there's day-to-day cultivator work that we don't get very much of in canon, and wwx's affinity for the dead, in both the "help them move on" sense and the "go fuck them up for me" sense. (Both of these are heartbreaking, of course)
And the art! I've been wanting to bind this for ages, but I had to wait until I got a color printer to do this justice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lots of rambling under the cut!
It is somewhere around 550 pages long, which is apparently the exact max that my guillotine will take, so that was lucky. I tried an oxford hollow for the first time, and I love it! The text block feels so secure in the case.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The red on yellow design for the cover is supposed to look like the donghua talisman design - I'd hoped to make something that looked more like a talisman with circuit board imagery, but graphic design is not in fact my passion, so I just went with clipart.
I even learned how to turn a image into a font for the scene dividers! This is the circuit diagram symbol for a battery, because batteries are an important plot point and I'm a nerd.
Tumblr media
And there are juniors! I love them so much.
Tumblr media
Anyway, thank you @travelingneuritis ! I appreciate your contributions to fandom and had a lot of fun making this!

working on another mini A7 comic. I was thinking I might introduce a 'book club' patreon tier (maybe like £6) where you get sent a new mini story each month? like a physical book.
anyone into that?

So the sections of the poetry book I'm making are gonna be (1) God, (2) Love, (3) Russia, and (4) All Else. I think that covers everything.

Good Bye!
This is my last post as Special Collections Graduate Intern. I am now a Master of Fine Arts and I am using this post as an opportunity to share some of my own work.
My Dress, is an accordion-folded artists book printed from four hand carved linoleum blocks. Two blocks on each side of the single sheet, yellow and a deep navy. Conceived of in 2021, published in 2023 as a small boxed edition of 4. This copy will be a part of the UWM Libraries' Special Collections.
The book was a part of my thesis exhibition, In Here, Out There. My exhibition was about the work of 'becoming' queer, work typically done in safe interior spaces, like our homes where we can play and experiment with our how we perform gender. The work of 'becoming' queer involves orienting oneself towards objects that allow you to imagine new possibilities of being. In this book that object is my dress that I carefully select from my closet and pull on over my head, I then joyfully fly through the apartment and the book to the mirror in which I appreciate the work I have done.
I will be staying in Milwaukee; I love this city and have an amazing supportive community here. I will have a studio at the House of RAD and I will be teaching workshops at Anchor Press Paper and Print! Including one on creating a linocut accordion fold book, much like this one. So, keep a look out!
Also, come and see Boyfriend Material, an exhibition of Queer Milwaukee based artists, including myself, curated by artist and curator, LaNia Sproles. Open May 22 – July 15, 2023 at the Brooks Stevens Gallery, located at MIAD, 273 East Erie Street, Milwaukee.

Finally, FINALLY I am able to post this. For some reason tumblr refused to let me make new posts but I fixed it. As for my process book it was equally as hard to get right since I had to print it FIVE times for it to come out correctly.
But it is done.

An old collaged journal cover. One of my first books.
It reminds me that I didn’t wait until I had all the right supplies. I didn’t need it to be perfect to show it to others.
I made it because creating it brought me joy.
That’s the only reason we need to create… art, journals, sewing or any craft project… because it feels good to bring a vision to life with your own two hands. 💕📚

Bound an old sort story of mine. This was my first time using the website bookbinder js which is a LIFESAVER. Much easier than manually splitting my pdf into signatures. The cover design took me a couple tries. I knew I wanted the camera, I knew I wanted there to be some silver on the cover. In the end I layered some silver paper on the cover & used paint and ink to draw the design. All lettering was done with stencils. The end-pages are my favorite part of this…for they actually fit properly! I wish the centerpiece of the cover was a bit smoother but I’m guessing I can remedy that by using thicker paper or layering more next time. Overall pretty happy with this ✨

I love the story Winter Star by @shady-tavern so much I printed it and made a book from their post! With permission of course.
If anyone has good book making tips, please share!I’d love to improve!
Tumblr media
I learned so much since this was only the second book I bound, and it’s the first one without leather work (I always start a new craft working with more difficult materials because I hate myself apparently. I learn a LOT though!) I am very proud of this book! It is a hard cover with hand embroidered/beaded front cover. The formatting and printing was actually the most difficult part. Closely followed by trying to close off the spine ends while making them look decent. I sewed a little bookmark that’s attached to the spine that I love.
Tumblr media
All the folds and binding parts line up so beautifully… I’m just in love! Anyway, go read their stories! They’re lovely! I made this so I could read it to the children in my life ❤️ (and of course read it for myself)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are definitely some things I want to work on for future book making but I’m still very proud of it!
@shady-tavern your writing is wonderful and I’m glad you do it! 💙

They're done! Two copies of It Seems the Hills and Rivers Have Been Waiting by @scarlettohairdye. This was for the Renegade Bindery exchange, and as soon as I saw that @helle-bored requested this fic, I couldn't even think of doing anything else. I love everything about this story.
They're heckin' chonkers, as we say in the fanbinding biz. 500 pages each, so that stack up there? An entire REAM of paper. I felt like Fan Dingxiang carrying them around.

Everything's purple, because this is a book about Yunmeng Jiang characters and you can't NOT make them purple. Lots more under the cut!
The cover fabric I dyed myself to try and match the lavender robes we see on some background female Jiang disciples. It was originally fabric meant for oxford shirts, light blue crossed with white. I dyed it with Jacquard fiber reactive Hot Pink, and went on an entire emotional journey through "is this enough dye?" "is this TOO much dye?" "wtf I added the soda ash and now the bath is a DIFFERENT color" "IT'S BLOTCHY NO" to a wonderful sigh of relief when it came out of the synthrapol a beautiful lavender. There's the slightest hint of a color shift due to the warp/weft color difference. The white threads went pink, and the blue went periwinkle-ish. (There is also a lot of color shift in the pictures due to shitty winter lighting and bad camera skills)

Thanks of course to my trusty Brother HL 2270 as well as Kazoo, who participated above and beyond what I expected or wanted.

Making such big books was VERY satisfying, and luckily, I'm not done! These were for the author and my swap partner. My copy hasn't even been sewn together.

shoutout to people who have public ao3 bookmarks
1 you are much braver than i and 2 it’s genuinely so helpful?? after i finish reading all the fics by an author i like i go and check their bookmarks and BAM more good fics curated specifically by Author With Good Taste! or then there’s people who comment or bookmark my own fics and hey if they like my stories then maybe i’ll like other stories they’ve saved!!
(and double shoutout to people who leave notes on their bookmarks too. as a fic author it makes me very happy to see you write a little blurb to yourself about something i wrote. and again as a reader it’s super helpful!!)

Last work of the semester-- a collage book dedicated to my girlfriend, who I never thought I would have like this, and who is bright and kind and wonderful and puts up with my crackshot ideas including but not limited to attempting to fit two adult human beings on a tiny dorm bed for an entire night
