The last project for the historical costume course was late 1960s-early 1970s and we got to look through some really cool fabric stock. I lucked out with the William Morris inspired fabric for my jacket and was just able to squeeze the flared trousers out of the last of some lovely purple wool.
So I've been SUUUUPER hyperfixated on sewing as of late. I just looked at my archives and apparently it was beginning of July when I fell down the rabbit hole. First with this project bag and then with this little zipper bag.
I think we'll just put this...
Yeah full on hyper fixation.
First, I finished three pairs of pajama pants. Like I think I said, I love coordinating fabrics and patterns.
Okay, then the bags.
Another triangle bag (I also made one for my husband but apparently I didn't take a pictures of it - it was cute - grey on the outside, monsters on the inside):
Then I made a couple of these boxy bags (I don't like this pattern because it's got raw edges on the inside). The grey one is my experimenting with fusible vinyl (don't love it).
I'm happier with how the purple one came out.
Then I tried to do this magic pouch funky bag and it was a COMPLETELY FUCKING DISASTER. I think I tried 3? 4? attempts before even getting through the pattern. It was a good learning experience I GUESS. Trust me it's so bad. Which is unfortunate because it's a super cool looking thing when it's done right.
Then my daughter asked me to make something for her dance teacher, so I did this - different pattern from the above boxy things, and I love it so much better (no raw edges!!)! Not sure how to do a grab handle on it, but I think there's a way!
And then, lastly, today, I experimented with this clam-shell thing. It's a similar construction to the magic pouch (same woman's tutorial) and it came out a lot better. I think a curved zipper is easier to put in than an angled one, if that makes sense. It's still a bit fiddly for me (and has hand sewing which I do not love).
i forgot to ever post these here! this was the giant batch of jewelry (ear wraps and ear cuffs) I made this spring to sell at my mermaid events :) They ended up being really popular!! I’ve also made a few customs for people since as well. A portion of these have sold but between shows I’m happy to sell available stock online as well, if anyone’s ever interested.
Some WIPs test fitting all the pieces of the 3D printed faceplate for the fursuit I'm making for my friend. I think at this stage it really becomes tangible and easy to imagine what the final is going to look like. :]
Mangle boards are tools to wring and press fabrics when they are washed or wet in general.
Larger mechanical wringers became popular in the 19th century but the mangle board is common throughout the nordics from the Middle Ages until the turn of the 20th century.
They would be used with a rolling pin, around which the fabric was wound. Then pressure would be applied to wring the fabric.
Mangle boards could be richly decorated and often feature handles carved to look like horses. They were suitable suitor’s gifts.
Chuffed I found an older project that's about 65% complete today. I replaced it's needle as I don't currently have a cushion + cleaner (y'know the ubiquitous tomato/strawberry combo) and it's in the hoop, ready to go.
I finished the bobbin lace flower and decided it would make a nice little deco for one of my project bags (need to make more deco for it. Need to cover it in deco. *Feverishly starts next project*)
The Hocotate freight ship made out of wood and acrylic paint. The wood base was a present from my little brother, he carved it himself. I painted the ship over several days.
Like, I deeply and genuinely believe that making things with your hands is just so so good for us, and taps into this whole being human thing. It’s also cool because you end up (hopefully) with a useful and useable item (sometimes it looks handmade; sometimes it looks homemade - either way, it’s awesome!). It’s also very very good for me because I am very impatient and also a perfectionist who hates not being perfect on the first try so crafting gives me really good practice at that!!
This project is @somethingwittyorother ‘s fault because she said something in our chat about project bags, and well, I was like. HEY. I can see and I have SO MUCH FABRIC left over from the great masks making of 2020-2022 (or so), and these could be a great way to use them up!
So I found a couple of patterns on Etsy and gave one a go!
Definitely some challenges for me in this one, but now that I’ve got one done, I think others well go better!
