I've always found Alexander Saburov interesting, especially P1 Rubin's take on him where he tells how Alexander in incognito saved people from burning house and went unrecognized for the deed (nor flaunted it). Wonderful and easy to miss characterization.

YES saburov's fucked up sense of performing duty by putting himself at risk... my favorite... have had thoughts brewing in response to this that aren't quite cooked enough yet but it's very much a gendered standard that he holds himself to IMO, of idealized masculinity as a responsibility. as an active role and as the way things must be done. making the choices that he thinks need to be made regardless of how bad they are for him. pairing beautifully with katerina's self-destructive attempts to conform to the extremely feminine-gendered role of mistress, pairing wonderfully with the two of them's catastrophic attempt to conform to the heteropatriarchal nuclear family archetype by adopting the changeling :^) and especially how this is a function of how saburov relates to his Job, a role that's been passed down in his family and Actually Is critical to the function of the Town, inescapably so as long as the system of rulers exists

I also think the dsmp kinda talks about empathy. The characther rarely put themself in others shoes to see the things through their airs. Actual empathy it's undertanding why someone thinks the way they thing and putting youself in their shoes. A lot of the characthers dont do that. With c!dream no one ever put themself in his shoes, they all see him and go "well I'd have do this in your place and so you should do the way I think it should happen" showing a lack of empathy and more a attempt to justified their view on this person and hear their opinions of him repeated back. And the ones who do are "good" and the ones who dont "bad". The prison arc it's the extreme point of this I think, while exile shows cdream's own lack of empathy for ctommy I think prison arc shows this in a more extreme level in how csam and cquackity talk about cdream.

That's why for me it's not a coincidence that ctommy, someone who wanted to undertand cdream before but more to support his vision of him, is forced to literally put himself in cdream shoes. That's the first time he could actually feel empathy for him. He undertood that cdream it's not him and the reasons for why he did what did might not have been good but that's not the thing, the thing it's that they were good for him and he thought that's the solution and ctommy undertanding that's how cdream saw the world and trying to talk him about it and make him see his methods werent good. In that moment, true empathy was showed and that's a thing that lacked on the characthers of that server bc everyone was so focused on themselfs and never tried to think in how others think and feel until it was too late.

God yeah the empathy stuff is so so interesting, especially considering that cc!Dream stopped streaming from his character's POV, which kind of like...forcibly cuts c!Dream off from the audience. Which makes his character harder to empathize with, I'd argue, because you're no longer able to see the story from his perspective the way you can with other characters. Super fascinating move. IIRC cc!Dream said he did that because he was already a big creator and wanted to give smaller creators the spotlight (i could be wrong, feel free to fact-check this as you see fit) but like...regardless of what his intent was, he cuts c!Dream's POV out of the narrative more or less right as c!Dream starts pivoting to a more antagonistic (or i guess antagonist-adjacent, in some ppl's view) role in the story.

okok not to cdroolish post constantly but the fact that all of Foolish's time on the smp Dream has been this lingering figure over it that he just doesn't quite get. Dream is this boogy man, this villain, this horrible creature locked away that he's never even met, never spoken too. From what he's heard, he has to be his enemy but Foolish just. doesn't know.

All Foolish has to go on is outside information, and then all he has is this obscure, impossible to pin down god who just so happens to look exactly like the person everyone is afraid of. And it doesn't make sense and it doesn't fit together, but it's all Foolish has, ya know?

And then he meets him, and Dream just instantly contextualizes so much in a single conversation. Dream may have done horrid shit, but so has Quackity. So has Sam. Suddenly, the lines aren't so clear cut. Suddenly, Dream isn't the only villain on the server. Everyone is a scumbag. Everyone is an asshole just doing what they think they have to.

AND GOD! it's that moment that I want to chew on forever because no one else has broken it down like that for Foolish before. Everyone else is painting themselves in a good light, the right choice, or at the very least Dream as the big bad, and then Dream, who knows who he is and what he's done, just outright says that no, everyone has skeletons in their closet. And I think that's hard for Foolish to hear because he's constantly grasping for reasons to not do what he has to do. He is someone who constantly chooses kindness, who everyone gets along with, and whose greatest threat is an undefinable eldritch being who mind controls his friends, so it's not even their fault that they killed him! So for him to find out that behind his back, someone he trusted was torturing someone who is supposedly the worst person on the server? UGH INJECT IT INTO MY VEINS

that's why I like them so much, because Dream functions has this really potent wakeup call for Foolish and draws into questions a lot of what Foolish refuses to do and why he refuses to do them. They're fun little narrative foils for one another and I love that. also "one big happy family" 🤝 "everyone getting along like they use to"

au where anakin runs a cooking youtube channel and obi-wan runs a baking one and they’re both hugely successful and have many recipe books and a few restaurants/bakeries between them---for obi-wan, the youtube/tiktok videos are a lark, something one of his more social media savvy agents suggested. for anakin, that’s how he got his start so he still religiously uploads a few videos per month.

their fans want them to do a collab video---they both cook dinner and then they both make dessert. their agents love the idea, and they’re put in contact with one another to work out the kinks and figure out what to make.

anakin is thrilled because he loves obi-wan’s videos and routinely watched them during culinary school as a sort of calming meditation technique. obi-wan is thrilled because he’s always wanted to try one of Anakin’s meals, as they look so amazing.

so for a few weeks they’re like high key flirting over DMs and texts, both becoming more and more excited to meet in person......

only for their cooking styles to completely not mesh. they’re both ready to strangle the other man halfway through making dinner.
