I’m doing a mix of Whumptober and Flufftober prompts this year, this one is for @flufftober - Shooting Stars.
This is set a month post finale Legend of Korra, with established Kyalin enjoying the evening.
A cool suffused the air as night fell. It was a nice change from the sweltering, unrelenting heat that had plagued the city all week. Republic City was shifting into autumn, and hopefully that was the last heat wave of the year.
Kya shivers and curses herself. She lived in the South Pole, there was no reason to get chilly after just a month spent here. She was used to temperatures below zero. It was just because of all the stone in Lin’s apartment, Kya justifies, of course Lin insisted on being able to feel everything.
Even Kya’s mom didn’t live in an igloo made entirely of ice.
The lights of Republic City only dimmed at the large scars left from Kuvira’s attack. The rebuilding couldn’t yet be seen from Lin’s balcony, but Kya knew enough from Lin that it was making good progress. It was on schedule. For now.
The door swings open, and Lin comes out and gives her a cup of tea, “Here you go, love.”
Kya leans against her, enjoying the feeling of sturdy muscles and the knowledge that Lin’s knees are healed (they aren’t perfect, but she’s no longer limping around insisting that she’s fine). “Thank you.”
She raises one hand over the steam, going through an old exercise until it forms into a heart.
“Sap.” Lin’s dry voice says next to her, but she’s smiling and presses a kiss to Kya’s cheek.
“Only for you.” Kya promises.
Lin makes the tiny grumble that always means she’s trying to act annoyed, and Kya stoops and leans a head on her shoulder, looking upwards at the dark sky. The lights of the city dim many of the stars, but there’s still the bright constellation of the kite visible.
“Look,” Kya points in disbelief at the brilliant streak across the sky, “A shooting star! Make a wish.”
Lin lets out a sigh, “Aren’t we too old for this childish nonsense?”
Kya merely raises her eyebrows.
In a softer voice Lin whispers, “There’s nothing I need to wish for.”
“Now who's the sap!” Kya laughs, her cheeks tinged with red.
“Fine!” Lin grumbles, “I want a perfect knee and hip. The construction to be finished. My staff to not schedule pointless meetings. Korra to not wreck anything this month.” Lin grunts out, listing out each wish in rapid fire. Kya can only laugh more as she continues, “President Saikhan to finally approve the budget that’s sitting on his desk. My mother to visit when one of us isn’t in mortal danger. Su to stop badgering me to go on a family vacation.” She smiles softly at Kya, “For you to be happy and healthy.”
“I love you.” It blubbers out of Kya without thought. She turns and presses a kiss to Lin’s lips. Lin responds eagerly, one of her arms pulling her closer, and the other cupping Kya’s cheek. This is home. Kya lets out a happy sigh as they break apart, both of their eyes twinkling.
“That’s good,” Lin mutters, “Would be embarrassing if this was all unrequited.”
Kya is certain her laughs can be heard throughout the city.

12. Fine I’ll go with you - Kyalin ✨
“I don’t care how many invites he sends I’m not going to his wedding. Spirits know it’s just going to be a headache trap for eight hours.” Lin said simply.
Kya pouted as she moved to take Lin’s hand. “But Linny, I wouldn’t have anyone to dance with.” She said half teasing. “Maybe I’ll have to find me a strapping waitress to dance with while I’m away.”
Lin arched her brow at that. “He’s hired waitstaff?” She said incredulously.
Kya nodded and smiled. “Mm I’ll have my pick for sure. Or I could show off my handsome wife.”
Lin found herself blushing gently at the praise and shifted before sighing.
“Fine I’ll go with you.” Lin relented and Kya happily pulled her from the couch to go get ready.

Crime & Punishment Part II (NSFW)
“You really are insufferable, you know that right?”
“Oh come on Lin, nothing happened!”
Lin sulked angrily to the kitchen, taking two bowls from her cupboard.
“He wasn’t that oblivious Kya. I’m wearing your dress for Raava’s sake!”
Kya rolled her eyes.
“Trust me, Lin, that kid was so focused on his delivery that I doubt he even recognized you.”
Lin had set the bowls on her table but Kya had taken the food in the opposite direction.
“Kya! Where are you going?”
“Breakfast in bed, Lin!”
Breakfast in bed?? Lin blinked in confusion. It was late evening. It was dark outside. Had Kya finally lost it? Snapping out of her confusion, Lin bolted down the hall behind Kya.
Who had closed her door.
And locked it!
“Kya! What are you doing?!”
Not only was this her own bedroom, but Lin was also an accomplished metalbender which meant the lock was not any kind of hindrance to her. She flicked her finger and the lock clicked as she threw open the door.
Those few seconds were not much, but it was enough for Kya to achieve her desired presentation. She was sprawled on the bed, topless, a set of chopsticks in her teeth and two perfectly placed dumplings resting on either breast.
Lin’s mouth went dry, any ounce of annoyance completely gone...

🍊 i love you. i'm glad i exist. 🍊
The pain comes in waves, and it’s eased a bit at the moment, though she knows it’s still too sharp for her to stand. She focuses on her breath, inhaling and exhaling, until the scent of something citrusy floats into the room. She opens her eyes, maneuvering herself into a sitting position before looking over to the kitchen. Lin is standing at the counter, a fiery bright orange in her hands. It suddenly seems to be the only color in the entire apartment - the fruit in Lin’s hands and the peels discarded on the counter next to her. It’s something like watching her partner hold the sun.
kya has a chronic pain flare up and lin peels her an orange

A fic I started last year, but don’t know if I will finish:
“ Fresh off her break up with Tenzin, Lin is framed for the murder of a well-known triad leader. When no one on the force believes she is innocent, she has to work to clear her name. “

20 Questions for Fic Writers
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 49. I have a few options for #50…
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 299,440. Ok, I hadn’t realized I was that close. Now, my answer to #1 might be “a new 560-word drabble.”
3. What fandoms do you write for? I’m nearly exclusively writing for Avatar: Legend of Korra, with a little bit of Last Airbender, where it fits in.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
1. Rainstorm - Su is there for Lin, for once. 2. The Well of Need - My first long-form story, with Lin taking care of Kya. 3. This is My Anchor - A mid-sized Kyalin story where Lin doesn’t make Kya take care of her. 4. I’m Sorry I Need You - An angsty one-shot that fits with a couple others in the “marriage is hard” domain. 5. Walk With Me - A longer-than-intended one-shot variant on a Tumblr joke.
5. Do you respond to comments? I do, as soon as I can. Sometimes, that means getting off work. Sometimes, that means giving a response as meaningful as the comment was to me.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? For complete stand-alone stories, that is likely Something Changed, where the last words are usually joyous. I can’t find the link for the worst-worst ending I have, so just pretend that never happened.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? The happiest ending? I like my happy endings, so this is tough. But I think I’ll go for Elemental Changes, because that launched my collaboration with @slowdissolve on Red Jade.
8. Do you get hate on fics? Not hate, exactly. One reader informed me that I had ‘let them down’ on a follow-up story because I didn’t write the story that was in their head.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I’ve done a little, but it hasn’t been a focus for me. And, aside from the polyamory aspect, it’s all as vanilla as it comes.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Not unless you count LOK + ATLA a crossover, which I don’t.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Not to date.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? @slowdissolve and I wrote Moonsigns together, and we published two versions. One is told in first-person language and color coded, on Tumblr. We then followed it up with a more traditional third-person version that does not rely on color, on AO3.
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? Kyalin is where everything opened up for me.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I’m taking quite the long view of all of this. I haven’t added to Their Sacred Year in a while, but have the outline for the next installment, so I don’t consider it abandoned.
16. What are your writing strengths? Folks seem to like my dialogue and plotting.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I struggle with the final rising action / climax / falling action, to keep the pacing appropriate to the story.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I don’t plan on it, given I am uneducated in the languages appropriate to this setting.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Legend of Korra.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written? Saving the hardest for last. Naming the favorite child. Ok, fine. In that case, I’ll have to choose <wrestles with self> Elemental Changes (see #7), mostly because it’s a completely off-the-wall idea that I was able to see through and complete. And to have Slowdissolve illustrate the ending was an absolute capstone.
So I get to thank both @krastbannert and @wishingforatypewriter for their invitations!
Now, it's time to throw the floor open to folks like @yell0wsalt, @dont-blame-it-on-the-kids, @linguini17, @frogblast-the-ventcore, @badlucksav, @cdlunee, and of course,
you.

"There is something between us." and kyalin please
Lin smiled as she rolled over and moved to pull Kya close to her in bed only to be stopped as a small furry body lay wedged between the two women.
“Mmm why’d’you stop?” Kya murmured sleepily.
“There’s something between us.” Lin chuckled and picked up the small kitten-glider Kya had adopted recently. The small thing purred and moved to settle ontop of kya as Lin pulled the waterbender close and closed her eyes again to get some more rest.
“Mm you’ll have to train him better.” Kya hummed as she let her eyes stay closed and pressed close to Lin.
“Oh now I’m in charge of the litter and training?” Lin chuckled gently and pet the small creatures head before kissing Kya and getting back to sleep.

Ahhhh so I have to admit I have been working on something, it's a very big project for me.
It's 30 000 words long as of now, and I estimate to be about 1/2 - 2/3 of the way through the story. I'm super excited about it, however I don't want to get to a point where I'm almost done and don't finish, which is why I am writing it so much.
I want everyone in the kyalin Fandom to be right there with me when it's ready. So I'm going to do my best to finish it before I start posting.
How would I describe it???
A Kyalin mystery slowburn
Here's a snippet from Chapter 3 (spoilers ahead)
“Here,” Tenzin said, passing Lin a notice.
“So secretive,” Kya joked, pretending to lean over.
“It's not that secret,” Tenzin said, “two more came forward getting letters, bringing the total to-”
“Forty-nine.” Lin finished. The names added to the list weren't familiar to her. An Earth Republic mayor, and a fire nation general. “Something tells me there's one more out there,” Lin said.
“You think? An even 50?”
“Stopping at forty-nine would be good thinking on their end,” Kya said, “I mean, it would have everyone worried over the 50th letter, which doesn't exist.” She elaborated.
Lin raised an eyebrow, shrugging it off.
“What are the odds they get out anyway?” Kya asked.
“You mean the dirt?” Lin clarified.
“Yeah. Are the threats… real? Do you think they actually know something, or is it… broad enough to make yo- people think they did something.”
“Well we've bounced around that idea for a while,” Lin said, “but I think the general consensus was that… they were a little too close for comfort.” She looked to Tenzin, whose harrowing eyes reflected the anxieties of her own.
Her own letter bounced around in the back of brain, waiting to be unpacked. She had divulged so much into dealing with the case, and worrying about Suyin, she hadn't put much thought into how she would deal with the information revealed by her letter.
What she would do.
What she would say.
She didn't inherently think she had anything to be ashamed of, but there were plenty others who wouldn't see it that way.
It would be career ending, perhaps enough to chase her out of town in search of a fresh start.
If Suyin was still alive, Zaofu could make for a nice retirement place.
“Excuse me for a moment,” she said, getting up. She made for the bathroom down the hall, but instead opened the window at the end of the hall.
Delicately, and with precision, even in her wine-induced stupor, she climbed outside, hanging onto the ledge.
She'd done it a thousand times in her teen years. Scaling the air temple had been a right of passage, and a necessity, when she was with Tenzin.
It was second nature to her as she hauled herself to the upper floor.
Luckily, the window wasn't locked and she got back inside with ease.
She walked quietly down the hall, praying she didn't wake the kids. It was as she remembered. Almost nothing had changed, and a strange wave of deja vu overcame her.
It ended when she entered the left door, and not the right.
Kya's room was one she hadn't been in much, especially as she got older. It looked as she had envisioned. It was tasteful and colorful. Lin envied her ability to pick out pictures and tapestries of varied colors, still managing to make them go together.
First she checked the nightstand, which had a lot of interesting things, but nothing she was looking for.
She checked the duffle bag on the chair, nothing but clothes and towels.
She sighed, looking around.
She noticed the bed was lifted slightly off the floor. Tenzin used to keep… stuff under his bed.
Perhaps these airhead all thought alike.
She got on her knees before laying herself gently onto her stomach.
She outstretched an arm under the bed, feeling around until her palm landed on a box.
She pulled it out, and allowed herself to stand up before setting it on the bed and opening it.
The unmistakable waxy green seal.
The inky handwriting on the back with a clear name designation.
The clear indication that it had been open and removed multiple times.
She held it in her hand, her fingers frozen.

so i just had this cute kyalin thought
Lin is afraid of bugs. She screams if she sees a spider or if a bee is flying her way. She'll runaway from a butterfly even.
Kya doesn't mind bugs so every time something flies into their home she catches it with her bare hands. Once, she tried to show off by letting a spider walk on her arm but it got caught in her hair and Lin almost cried when helping her get it out.
They laughed about it but Lin is traumatized because SHE HAD TO HOLD A SPIDER.
I have to write it into my fic lol
