wow youre flustering me here anon. wuya rlly is always on my mind, esp since i draw and roleplay him on occasion with friends. he isn't a self insert or a yume, but he does hold a lot of deeply personal topics within his character. and has aspects of myself and my personality within his writing and profile.

and uhmm i have some!!

wuya really likes kalim's company and energy. he loves jade's genuine interest and appreciation for nature. he thinks rook is hilarious, and goes out of his way to taunt and play " cat and mouse " with him.

my main ship with wuya is with floyd ( a ship my friend group has taken to calling floya or floyer ). it's a pairing ive given a lot of thought to, and i've dove pretty deeply into the dynamic and chemistry there. i don't ship a lot usually as is since i'm so particular about these things. but i actually made a pretty neat little chart for characters and how wuya feels about them in general: here.

i LOVE oc x canon.

when i was pretty young, and did actively join and counted myself part of fandoms in general-- i was met with a lot of negativity for it. i'm so happy to see oc x canon is a lot more accepted and encouraged now. and because of my own experiences i really push and support people who wanna do what they wanna do. so what if you ship your funky little brain child with your favorite character? it isn't hurting anyone, and it's just another way to show you love and appreciate that character.

lastly, yes. it is hard. i consider myself pretty good at it, i've got a lot of rp experience under my belt. and i do think i've developed a skill for reading particular sorts of characters, and capturing their canon well. it's always a challenge, but in the end so long as you're happy with how it sounds... i think that's all that matters.

Tbh I always felt like Hino was forced to make Ze/ki a thing just because it’s popular… Yuki had it BAD for Kaname since the start of the series, and the feelings were mutual. And I always found it hard to believe Yuki’s heart was split btwn the 2 guys when she said shit like “you are the beginning of my world and everything in it” about Kaname.

(Yeah… because I’m totallyyyy gonna love the guy who’s first reaction to finding out I was originally born a vampire is threaten to kill me with no hesitation, and then basically gaslight me into thinking I was hiding it from him on purpose instead of letting me explain. >_>)

The series is soooo Yume focused and how much they’re meant to be with each other, always has been. So I truly hope vkm ends with them finally being together (and making THOSE fans so pissed over their precious emo boy that their anger sets them on fire or something lol)

My posts I’ve been making so far are 100 my true feelings lol. However, I also expected to get tomatoes thrown at me cuz I’m not filtering myself lol. So your ask made me feel relieved lol. I agree completely with what you said

I found it hard to believe her heart was split too which is why it took me this long to understand the ending of this manga and how we got to this point. I tried seeing things from haters side for a while but I realized I was letting people who have bias gaslight me to believing their wishful interpretations lol

The way she blushed, her body language, her beautiful words to Kaname. Those were obvious proof of love for me. When she said “you are my beginning and everything in that world” you don’t just say things like this without thinking or meaning it. An author doesn’t write these things without it meaning something. In the shoujo beat interview Hino chose the most memorable moments for each ship. For yume she chose when Kaname asked Yuuki if she wants to live forever with him.

I’ve never seen a story where the love is mutual and especially such a desire coming from the male live interest. Usually, it’s mostly girls pining and them being madly in love with the guy but the guy’s feelings aren’t shown in the same passion. So I love reading how Kaname is madly in love with Yuuki since I never see guys be so passionatly in love lol. So yea the her heart was split between two guys is just bleh. I can admit she cares for zero but she loves Kaname much more so the ending with that throw away line was bogus. Hino gave them that fanservice line that came out of nowhere which contradicts what the whole manga shows. Yuuki and Kaname never needed anyones permission to be together. And they are still miserable with their shitty fanservice, and they’ll be more miserable when Yuuki comes back

With each chapter of vkm there seems to be more hints of their reunion. Hino’s past work shuriken to pleats shows she leaves the yume stuff for the end. Probably to get zekis to keep reading and think they won lol. This is what I think she’s doing in vkm. She had to make zeki a thing because of demand and she didn’t actually expect the opportunity to make a sequel. So she was forced to write this ship except and it shows cuz it seems like she’s being held at gunpoint because of how she portrays them in vkm. The few left happy with this are just latching onto their crumbs convincing themselves that it’s enough. They’ll do a full 180 at the end of vkm lol. Hino finished zeki, she told all there is to tell for them. She gave them their fanservice line, she gave them their irrelevant guilt child (love you ren, you deserved better) , she gave them their fanservice two panel “wedding”. She fulfilled her obligation to those trolls, and vampire knight is really ending. There’s nothing stopping her from giving the character and ship she really cares for their deserved happy ending

Anything else would be a disrespect to the story. As a yume shipper and Kaname fan, I didn’t sign up for anything else.

I don’t know why people act like it’s such an outlandish idea that Yuuki could come back. There’s hints all over vkm, the covers, the tag lines, the drama cd like yea. It’ll be funny if it happens and zekis are whining how zero got the short end of the stick and how he deserved better lol. These people never miss an opportunity to throw a pity party for zero and they’ll forget about the fanservice shit ending they got and start back on acting like zero didn’t get shit and he’s the tragic hero of the story Lmaoo

Personally, I don’t care what zekis say about yume being toxic because that’s subjective. Plus, I personally think zeki ain’t too healthy, with the death threats, the gaslighting, the guilt, the pity, and the assault of vkm and that’s not even all of it. So that just shows how biased these people are so I don’t care for their opinions

These people are always miserable over their emo boy I’m starting to think it’s their fetish lol. So it’ll be funny for me to see them turn and say zero had it the worst and he deserved better than Yuuki even tho he chose to stick around when he could’ve left her lol. Anyway, prolly gonna get the tantrums for this post but life is too short to censor yourself for a series that’s reaching its end Lmaoo. Whatever, I really don’t care, sayonara emo bitch boy lol

i always thought and still think he’s asian (like me and kiki) because of his dark hair. i know people say he dyes it but whatever

he’d probably like sanrio even if not openly? i think he might be embarrassed since ppl assume sanrio’s for kids but he’d especially like keroppi because he likes frogs

he’s GOTH (and to some extent punk) not an e-boy people need to stop calling him an e-boy i’m begging you because if you saw e-boy culture on tiktok you know they’re the legit antithesis of him and he would probably hate/make fun of them with sam and abigail

my dude wears glasses but only when he’s alone in his room which is why if you took him out to get food he wouldn’t be able to read the menu at mcdonalds

he’s naturally good with cats in the same way he’s good with frogs. he’s one of those people who doesn’t even know but cats just seem to really like them for no explainable reason

definitely plays minecraft. no ifs ands or buts. he is not ashamed in it and neither should you

i don’t think his hair was intentionally supposed to be longer on one side.  i think he grew his hair out once in high school and then tried to cut it but cut off too much on one side but when he saw how edgy it looked he went idk this kinda looks nice and left it

i don’t know if anyone knows about the games yume nikki and ib but he’d like those types of games a lot. and in the context of him being a programmer, he’d probably code something similar to the premise of that game. very deep but also kinda confusing games

i don’t think he hates maru. she specializes in STEM just like he does and a lot of their interests align imo. i like to think sometimes they help each other out whether it be with maru’s robots or his own coding. at least once he matures out of the phase of feeling secondary to her and realizes she actually really loves her brother

i feel like the couple meme sheet i did embodies their dynamic pretty well but if it wasn’t obvious i like opposites attract and goth/prep dynamics

even if they don’t have the exact same interests, they strive for compromise. as in kiki giving him tulips since she likes tulips even though he hates flowers - he keeps them in a vase anyway. kiki doesn’t like horror, sebastian probably does, and she watches movies with him so he isn’t trapped watching awful romcoms with her. he also probably doesn’t love sweets but i think i established earlier kiki’s pretty good at baking so he tries to eat whatever she bakes anyway. and it’s not like those “the old ball and chain” relationships but more so done out of love so your partner doesn’t feel like they are losing parts of themselves dating you

not that they don’t have anything in common though b/c kiki liked the cave saga comics as a kids and would participate in dnd sessions with sebastian

they were definitely best friends before they went out and i don’t think it was love at first sight. he was probably thinking why the hell does this chick keep showing up in my room for the first few weeks of their friendship until she kinda grew on him once he realized she was there to stay and annoyingly persistent

i don’t really get the vibe sebastian is the type to give you advice when you’re upset but it’s not necessarily a bad thing for kiki. it’s better for her, as opposed to haley (who i DO think gives good advice), to sometimes have someone to listen to. imo he’s more observant so he is able to pick up on her being upset when someone like abigail might not notice

in general the same goes as what i’ve said about shane and haley - a lot of their dynamic is based on helping each other, especially helping each other grow

they definitely bicker but not in an overdramatic way? i feel like the only thing they’d fight about is something as dumb as robin and demetrius fighting over tomatoes being fruit - ultimately harmless (plus robin and demetrius have one of the healthiest relationships in game). maybe something like that one vid of the guys fighting over whether or not water is wet

kiki definitely gets on his ass about his health all the time. like i KNOW it’s annoying the way your mom might nag you but i am so bad at self-care myself that i’m 99% sure he probably forgets to eat sometimes after coding for hours which is why she drops food off for him constantly

sebastian is better at showing affection through his actions because saying stuff verbally is not his strong suit and embarrasses him, so usually he resorts to things

kiki is also so good at giving sebastian super well thought-out gifts (like bidding on a signed copy of the comics he likes) that he gets really nervous around holidays because he doesn’t want to give her something that she doesn’t like and disappoint her. gift giving is a competition at this point

pda is not really sebastian’s thing so kiki doesn’t indulge in it that much so he won’t die of embarrassment. but on occasion she does do some pda in front of everyone though to embarrass him b/c it is kinda funny to her

their dates tend to be really simple too? i don’t think either of them are big gesture types of people or they only do that type of stuff once in a while. i think he’s come to terms that kiki refuses to go back to the city for dates but is okay with date nights in. weirdly enough he plans them more knowing that she’s really busy with farm work

What is your favorite AU/prompt idea/trope for your pairing?     ALL MISUKAZU AUS ARE GOOD but. i really love any au where their first meeting is in the future and both are still kind of lost but they're Older and it's hard to let themselves fall into the easy trust they find in canon. i just think that'd be neat.

Favorite aspect of them/their relationship dynamics?     THIS IS GOING TO SOUND SO CHEESY but i love how /real/ they allow themselves to be around each other. misukazu at their best is when one thinks "you're you. and i love that you" and the other knows this. i just. THEY VALIDATE THE OTHER SO MUCH CRIES

Least favorite aspect of them/their relationship dynamics? (Can be headcannon)     this isn't a "least fav" so much as "it makes me sad" but if either of them showed any sign of not being interested anymore the other is more likely to give up then push anything. sort of like "it was bound to happen, so i'll enjoy now until they drop me" or EVEN WORSE they think the other would be better off without them and pushes them away. so yeah the fact i can see one of these happening makes me sad.

If they aren’t a canon pairing, how would you get them together?     they give off "everyone knows we're dating but us" energy but at the same time i feel like they'd acknowledge there's something and just not define it bc a) they don't need to (misumi) or b) they're too nervous to (kazu). in other words i think one day they are holding hands and misumi says "kazu? is this dating?" and kazu holds his breath before asking "do you want it to be?"

If you had to take them and plunk them into another fandom, what fandom would that be? Why?     OOOOOH BOY well. i think it could be either of them. i don't think they'd break up for lack of love but too much love and wanting the other to be happy and thinking that the only way to give them that is to let them go. so i guess the question is which of them would be more likely to be selfish and hold on. thinking this way, i think misumi would be more likely to break-up, bc kazu has lots of friends who are better than him!! and misumi is more ready to leave if he thinks he needs to than kazu is. now im sad.

Are they relatable as characters or as a pairing?     THE NUMBER OF TIMES I'VE BEEN CALLED KAZU KIN... in all seriousness kazu's struggles with speaking out and (shinobi spoilers) his uncertainty over his future hit real close to home... while i don't relate as much as misumi, his struggles always manage to tear my heart into pieces... ((oversharing alert) i guess what really separates me from misumi is his struggle with his desire to connect with family who has treated him poorly... whereas im more "lol fuck you") tldr i relate to kazu slightly more LOL

What made you decide to ship them?     TBH I FINISHED THE MAIN STORY AND WENT "OH MY GOD... THAT'S MY SHIP" but now that i'm here i continue to ship them because they have the potential to bring out both the best and the worst in each other and i'm all about that

Favorite genre for them? (Angst, fluff, etc.)     angst. i just. angst hurt/comfort all the way. im so sorry babies.

lol you thought there would just be 21 ANYWAY EXTRA 1: how do they spend breaks/vacation?    they'd travel a lot when they're older!! kazunari loves to travel and misumi would follow kazunari anywhere (also, new triangles!!) so they go somewhere new whenever they have the time. however i think eventually one or both of their future careers will take them anywhere and everywhere anyway, so their "ideal vacation" might turn into an evening in, cuddling and catching up (as if they didn't already send play-by-play updates over the phone of whatever they did during the day)

EXTRA 2: first date?     i don't they ever have an explicit first date, but if asked they'll cite the time they had a picnic in the park turned triangle hunt turned accidental dip in the duck pond. at least, kazunari will. misumi just tilts his head and wonders what you mean.

EXTRA 3: gifts?     IM FEELING REALLY CHEESY SO I'M MAKING THIS ABOUT ANNIVERSARY GIFTS they both end up getting each other jewelry (although kazu was really really nervous bc he wasn't sure if misumi would wear it). kazu gets misumi a bracelet (with triangles, of course although misumi only wears it sometimes because he doesn't want to lose it) and misumi gets kazu a pair of triangle earrings "so we can match!" and kazunari combusts at the implications

EXTRA 4: sharing clothes     THEY'RE ACTUALLY AROUND THE SAME SIZE (and tend to wear baggier stuff barring kazu's skinny jeans)... but they have completely different Styles so it's still really obvious when steal each other's stuff ahdjajdkaf. as cute as kazu would look in sumi's sweatshirt i think the much more likely scenario is kazu wrapping misumi in his jackets because this boy nEVER BRINGS HIS ANYWHERE anyway just. accidental shared wardrobe misukazu.

EXTRA 5: lake house au    consider: kazunari living in a house on the shore of a lake for a summer for Art Purposes (and a little bit for Dealing With Life purposes but he's not gonna admit that) and meets his lake neighbor misumi who kazu thinks might be a ghost or spirit for a while but he actually just lives further down the lake and misumi unknowingly helps kazu with his Life Issues and maybe they fall in love

Paws on my heart

I don’t often feel the need to write personal posts like this, but the time comes every now and then. Today I had to euthanize my sweet kitty Taro. We got him a little over two years ago from a lady who rescues cats. From what she told us, he’d been abandoned after his elderly owner passed away and he was practically starved to death (he may have also been abused by the owner’s son who supposedly threw out all her cats). We didn’t know how long he’d last due to his age (he seemed to be about fifteen years old when we got him) but we decided to try and give him the best life possible in what little time he had left….and for two years, he flourished. After we treated him early on for a bad ear infection (he was deaf, not sure if the infection caused it), he had as much energy as a senior cat could have. He would jump up and down from the bed and the chair, yowl at the outside cats through the screen door, get plenty of lap-sitting time, played in cardboard boxes (his favorite), and he’d even occasionally run around the house with random spurts of energy. He would always get excited when I came home from work and would meow at me, demanding I sit in the chair so he could lay in my lap. He was also very well behaved and never hissed, scratched, or bit. He would let me trim his nails, brush his fur, and clean his ears (he actually enjoyed the latter two). Since he was deaf, I found that I could point to things or wave to him and he would follow. He was a big time rubber too and would rub his head all over my head, hand, shoulder, the corner of the table, whatever he could get a hold of. He would do other silly things too like lay on my back when I’d lie on my stomach on my bed, open the kitchen cabinets for no apparent reason, and explore my room closet whenever I’d open it.

Everything was fine with him until just a couple weeks ago when he got sick very suddenly. His hind legs had always been a little weak but it never stopped him from doing normal activities. We figured it was due to his old age and the fact that he was so malnourished before we adopted him. But all of a sudden, in just a few days’ time, his legs got weaker and weaker, to the point where he couldn’t even walk. He started eating less and less and would only drink a little milk and cat food gravy if we held it right under his mouth (since he couldn’t walk to his bowls). I wish I knew why he suddenly declined so fast…he doesn’t go outside so did he have an accident and hurt himself in the house and we didn’t know about it? Or did underlying ailments from before we adopted him suddenly catch up with him? After the vet examined him on Tuesday, we found out that he had severe back pain that carried into his legs. His options were limited due to his age so she gave him a steroid shot, fluids, and prescribed pain and anti-inflammatory medicine. I started getting hopeful that he’d feel better and live a bit longer with all this treatment. But unfortunately my hopes were immediately dashed when he showed no improvement. Even after a few doses of the medicine and shot, he was still in pain and couldn’t walk, and he stopped eating and drinking completely. He just spent all day laying in his cat bed and would only leave to painfully hobble over to the litter box if he could make it, or would just pee on the floor if he couldn’t. It was horrible watching him attempt to poop only to fail and then collapse a few seconds later because it was too exhausting to hold himself up. Even when we tried to pick him up, if he wasn’t in the right position he would cry out in pain. It was so sad seeing him look longingly at food or the bed, being so confused about why he couldn’t do the things he used to. Since he was so old, we couldn’t put him through surgeries, hospital stays, and major testing. Although he still seemed alert and slightly enjoyed pets and belly rubs, he was slowly starving to death and couldn’t move without pain…his quality of life was no good, so we had to make the decision to euthanize him.

I’ve had lots of loving cats put down in my life. I’m trying to understand why this one is making me especially sad. I think it’s because for all of my other cats, I had them for a much longer length of time, and also, I had many other cats at the same time, so even when one passed away there were others left to fill the void. The only exception was Toki, the cat we had before Taro, but the difference with her was that we had her for a long sixteen years, and her decline was much slower. Not only did we have Taro for a short two years and three months, but his decline came out of nowhere; for the whole time we had him it was like he was getting younger each day, and then aged rapidly in just a couple weeks. And also, he was more “my” cat. Toki loved both of us but favored my mom a bit more, while Taro favored me. The loving looks he would give me, the constant meowing to try and communicate with me despite being deaf, the boisterous purring as I’d pet him on my lap, having him by my side as I conquered my favorite video games (and when I had emotional outbursts while playing, the way he’d look at me like I was crazy)…these will be terribly missed. Plus he enjoyed my collecting hobby and was always curious about new merch I bought, especially my Frozen stuff and Pokemon plushies.

This past week has been awful – I’ve felt like I’ve been attending a funeral every day. It was hard holding back bouts of tears at work, and will be hard next week knowing that I won’t have his love to look forward to when I come home each day. This heavy sorrow has got me thinking deeply about how this one cat’s life, one tiny little life among the billions of animal and human lives that come and go throughout this big, wide world, has made such an emotional impact on me. It was so short in the scheme of things, but brought me so much love and joy, and now so much sadness. I guess that’s what makes life so painful but so wonderful. And like many other great joys and great sorrows we experience in life, once it’s over it all starts to feel like a dream when enough time goes by, and the intensity of both the happiness and the pain will fade. So I know the grief I’m feeling now will fade in time, but I’ll try my best to hang onto the joy and keep in mind that there are tons of loving cats out there waiting to become part of my life in the years to come. When I eventually have to lose them too, I know I’ll experience this pain again, but having a few weeks of sadness in exchange for the years of love and joy they give is still a very good deal.

I think one or two of the reviews I read of this anime picked up the names of each episode are based on movies and it seems they’re right. Namely, episode 1 is Se7en while episode 2 is Reservoir Dogs...so they’re crime movies specifically.

The AnimeLab translation of the title is “Duelling Samurai”, but the translation on the hardsubs is “Rock-Bottom Samurai”. The word donzoko indicates the latter is correct.

I think Leo said “Rei-chan”, not “Rachel”. It’s a bit hard to hear because he’s eating though…

I think there’s only one line where he doesn’t talk like a ninja in his intro to Ayu and that’s the line where he uses keigo instead.

I think the card says “acupuncturist Kawa????” (can’t read the last character due to Britney’s thumb), but…welp, Britney’s kinda disturbing in their (not sure what pronoun to use) own way. There also appears to be an address in Ikebukuro on the card.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Leo learnt how to speak Japanese fluently from ninja movies – that’s a pretty common anime trope, like in Tada-kun’s Rainbow Samurai case. “Always make your heart rainbow!” and all that jazz.

LOL, instead of yokudekimashita (literally, “you did good”) it’s makura ni narimashita (“you made [the book] into a pillow”). The common sentence ending for verbs means it’s funnier in Japanese, I think.

From here until episode 6-ish, I’ll be paying extra attention to characters’ role language. I normally do that, but I picked this anime for an assignment because I knew it had a lot of examples…yes, you heard me right. An assignment! I should be happy, but I’m wondering if my taste is going to get roasted by the normies or if I’ve gone too far with my unabashed love…

I was discussing with some of my peeps in a Discord server and…is it possible MTR will get an ED from here on out if you divide the episodes up for an almost equal amount for each division? We’ll have to wait and see.

…Oof. I’m sort of scared for this episode. It’s gonna have swearing galore…and yup, there it is, right out the gate.

Wait, why not translate wakagashira? It just means “young head” or “2nd in command”.

…well, at least they got some variation in their swearing this time…?

Hmm, normally the translation is “rabbit cop” or something toned down like that. They dialled it up to “rabbity-ass cop”. (Yakuwarigo: Samatoki = na, on the whole = very, very slang – as a former naval officer, you would expect Riou to speak formally, but he speaks as casually as almost everyone else (yamero etc.))

I learnt how to do some of the casino stuff while trying to get a job as a gaming customer service assistant in a huge casino joint one time. In a sense, this brings me back to then. (Update: I mean, the sound of the roulette, the sight of the board, the chips and the like. That’s what takes me back.)

(Yakuwarigo: Dice slurs his words a lot, especially when yelling things along the lines of “Please lend me moneyyyyyyyyyyyyy!” This is also true in the game.)

Even Ramuda uses “san” with Samatoki, most likely to emulate how Samatoki calls himself “oresama” (but with lower formality).

This CGI…it’s not the jankiest, but it is gonna bug me ever so slightly.

I’ve noticed a lot of people in the English-speaking fandom, when they watched the anime, took a shine to MTC (because they seem to embody the entire “refuge in audacity” thing they’ve picked up on…plus that one hamster lyric people got attached to). You can see them being all “cop/gangster husbands” here if that’s your gig – it’s kind of my gig, but to be real HypMic is not a scene where I ship dudes. I’m sorry, but I just like watching pretty boys kick butt.

What warranted the dramatic glasses drop…? (LOL anyway)

That whistle…LOL. It’s like “Look at my boy fight” and “Riou’s got some sweet fightin’ moves” rolled up in one.

For some reason, when I saw the sign for the Organised Crime department, I heard the Student Council theme from Boueibu play in my head…? (Remember that harpsichord theme?) *shrugs* I dunno why that happened.

Hmm…they crossed out the subtitles using Swedish letters instead of strikethrough, huh? Didn’t know that was a limitation.

(Yakuwarigo: Jyuto uses desune. He’s the most feminine of the trio by virtue of being the smallest height-wise and most polite due to his job, but he seems to bounce between casual and polite a lot.)

Natsu no mushi = bugs in the summer. Not a perfect match, but it works. (Notably, things like Gentaro’s speech and rap lyrics don’t play by the same yakuwarigo rules because you can play characters within it – e.g. the evil doctor Jakurai sometimes plays. I’ve noticed most of the songs use casual or whatever rhymes, even for someone like Doppo who’s considered more polite than most.)

…Despite the swearing…that song slaps, man! That’s great.

MTC seems to have more tragedy on average than other divisions. This is because FP and BB are quite light-hearted and mostly family-friendly with hidden depths, but MTR mostly has stalker stories. Update: That’s when they’re focussing on MTR solo. FP’s currently could get pretty dark soon and a lot of the dark/tragic stuff is not actually going to make the anime because it’s in the drama tracks/manga.

My gosh, we got to see Nemu animated!

Okay, I’m not well-versed in yakuza slang but kumicho = boss, so Samatoki would have to answer to a kumicho.

Ah, it did switch! It’s just…uh, gone to an MTC version of itself (and it has the same name, “Kizuna”). So that means we wait another 6 episodes for MTR. On the other hand…what will the final version be? A whole cast version? A different song? No song at all? *shrugs* Only the future can tell us these things. (Also, why is Jyuto so loud…? That’s why I’m not a bigger fan of him. Much like Ramuda’s minna genki?, his iconic quotes like “In the building!” are so loud and silly-sounding, you just can’t get them out of your head.)

The cityscape in the middle of the disc at the ED’s start seems to have changed. I would assume that’s a Yokohama skyline.

Keiichi Nakagawa is the voice of Rentei…I should stop burning myself on guest VA appearances, this guy’s a rookie. This Nouzenkazura VA (Kenji Hamada) though is voiced by the guy who does Otegine in Touken Ranbu and isn’t as much of a rookie as Rentei’s.

Notably, where BB do the “BB sign” (as it seems to be known), MTC do a finger gun. MTR have the wolf fang, but…what is FP’s, then? Update: It’s a peace sign to the side to make an F.

Today’s new music was “Red Zone (Don’t Test da Master)”, by KLOOZ and DJ WATARAI.

*cringes at the airhorn* *briefly presses fingers to forehead, as if going to massage temples, but then removes them* The airhorn reminds me of crazy sport fans. Crazy anime fans are more civil than them, which is one reason why I don’t follow sports on the regular.

Update: Oh! The pond owl cafe in episode 2! It means Ikebukuro!...Sort of. Fukurou rhymes with ‘bukuro and ike = pond.

Hmm? Is it just me or is that T in the code the kanji for “bird” (tori)?

“It’s where I belong.” – I know my reason for pursuing Japanese is a purely selfish reason – so I can stay above others in the topics I think matter to me and pursue the endless natural high that comes from the thrill of translation (which may be all one reason or two, depending on how you look at it).

Oh, the bunny and shark again.

The bunny’s shirt said “life” at one point, I didn’t understand the shark’s though.

At one point, shark: Ka (from “Kansai”), bunny: ken (authority).

At the end, shark: heaven, bunny: hell. These broadcasts look like NHK broadcasts at the end.

Most of these words are katakana, making them look foreign.

That CGI…is not the greatest.

According to Moon Land, gymnastics operates on a deduction/addition system. You add points for difficulty, but deduct points for errors like how Minamino’s feet are apart.

*sees montage* - Those CGI scenes really take out the budget, huh…?

Gymnastics moves are named after their creators…kinda like scientific names and finders.

There was a lot of commentary in Moon Land so I’m not sure what the moves are called from memory (the dialogue always did that for me), but having the reactions speak for themselves…I think the anime team has enough faith the reactions will convey everything. They did, by the way.

You can see the bone at the base of Minamino’s neck, under the skin…it’s sort of scary.

The fact you couldn’t see Jotaro’s eyes for a shot or two…that kind of unnerved me and built tension.

OH! New things! Hey!! I’m back(?) I’m feeling a little more motivated to work on Yume Heya again! I hope my motivation keeps up XD

Anyway, looking through old posts I realised I’d made a checklist (handy!) for things to do and I realised I’ve hit a few of them! It made me feel pretty good that I’d made noticable progress honestly!

1-Make home clothes sprites for all the students

Hasn’t gotten very far... Although all the characters have outfits, I’ve only mostly done their one facing forward sprite. Only Frague and Freyja have full sprite sheets of these outfits... (it’s kinda more tedious cause some characters have different hairstyles or something in their casual clothes). I have drawn references for all the student casual outfits so someone else making these sprites should be easy.

2-Make rainy day sprites for all the students

A little more succesful than the home clothes sprites in terms of finished sheets but less succesful because some students don’t even have their facing forward sprites yet XT Only Frague, Freyja and Maud have completed sprites (and Poniko too, but she’s not shown here). I haven’t drawn up references digitally for the students rain gear, the designs are all scrawled on papers XD but the descriptions could be easy to write (eg, Pera has a white umbrella with a lace-like trim and a light pink cape.) Edit- New reference sheet here! :D

3-Make the outside of the school

Right here, babbyyyy! Considering I’m so shaky with scenery sprites, I’m real proud of this one. There are trees below it and a fence surrounding it. Although this is done, I think perhaps a playground and field (for PE) could be added.

4-Finish club rooms

I...I have nothing to show XT I have done no more than I had before! There are vague sketches of the clubs I need to add here. I have finished the art club, astronomy club and the inside of the nature club which can be seen here. The clubs I need to add are the outside of the nature club, the hangout room and the library. I also don’t think I’m happy with the art club, it needs more additions to make it look alive.

5-Add teachers

Along with Mafurako, Kamakurako and Monoko, I’ve also made sprites for the teachers! And yes, they’re meant to look like the toriningen... It was tough taking the og toriningen sprites and making them fit in with the rest of the student sprites with their enormous heads XD I’m glad now I have an adult base from these sprites I can use for other characters. Aside from the three gals here, I’ll probably make palette swaps for other teachers so we have more variety!

6-Finish placeholder students sprites

I realised I didn’t want other students to look proper because I wanted it to be obvious who you could talk to to get important information, so I decided to make placeholder-chan! (I’ll have to add a placeholder-kun too) I don’t want it to be frustrating to look for students from Poniko’s class so everyone else in the school (excluding teachers) will look like this. If later in development I find it doesn’t look good I’ll change it.

OKAY! Sorry for the long post, but I’m really proud of the things I’ve done! With these things in mind, let’s make another to do list!

1-FINISH home clothes sprites for the students - Ref 2-FINISH rainy day sprites for the students - Ref 3-Add more outside places in school (I have no ideas or sketches for this yet so it’s less important right now) 4-Add the outside of the nature club, add the hangout club and add the library - Ref (not very good refs...) 5-Make palette swaps of teachers (maybe add male teachers)

and some new stuff for my to do list 6-Make Poniko’s real world house 7-Make sprites of students with bags (I’m getting pretty far with this one :D ) 8-Add staff room in school 9-Make sprites for Poniko for game opening (I wanted a kind of cutscene for an opening for the game, I want us to see Poniko getting ready for school!)

What a hefty list! I’ve got my work cut out! However-! There are some things I think y’all could help with ;3 ;3 Like always, if you wanna help, feel free to drop a dm! Cutie Reviews: DokiDoki Oct 19

Fluffy loves TokyoTreat apparently; he couldn’t wait for me to put the box aside!

I always get really excited whenever we come to an October DokiDoki box x3 they’re usually really fun, include cute accessories and Halloween items, and I love the cover artists work.

This months theme: Happy Halloween

“This month’s crate is all about the spooky side of kawaii. Come celebrate Halloween with us, using these items to make your October 31st a spooky special night!“

You know, as I read this and began to look more closely into this box and the Yume Twins, I almost felt like these 2 boxes were competing with each other this month. That, or its purely coincidental that they had vaguely similar themes and items. It could be, but I thought it was kind of funny.

Suteki Crate & Photo Prize

This month’s prize feature a pair of Pokemon plush ready to go trick-or-treating.

Meanwhile, the Suteki Crate is based on Sanrio goods, namely Kuromi and Sentimental Circus. Along with My Melody and Sirotan.

I love the Kuromi plushie, as well as the pouch set next to it, and the pen stand above it! The umbrella and hand bag are also very cute too.

Halloween Cat Tape

I think this may have been by the same company that made the “Christmas Cat“ tape we got from a Christmas box last year. The packaging and style of it looks exactly the same, but with different pictures of course. The length of this tape is 15mm x 2m.

I think for cat lovers, washi lovers, or decorators for Halloween would really like this. It’s easy to tear and stick, it sticks really well as far as I can tell, and the design is a really cute and fun way to touch up whatever you might be using it for.

Pumpkin Shiba

It looks like we get to have a fun little guest join us for Halloween- the very same Shiba who showed up during Christmas, and peach season. I’m not complaining, but I’m guessing by this its popularity is still going strong huh?

Anyway, for this month, this sweet little shiba comes donning a jack-o-lantern costume! It’s super-round and thick, filled to the brim with cotton for a soft and squishy companion you can squeeze nonstop~

I think its adorable, if I had remembered I had it I would have set it out somewhere in the house for some more decoration. It’s very cuddly as far as plushies go, but I noticed in the picture that its ear seems stuffed, while mine has a slight wrinkle to it. I’m not sure if that was just how random the distribution for the stuffing is, or if I’m just over-analyzing. The body itself feels like... I want to say cheap carnival plush, while the head portion feels like good quality plush.

But the plush is really cute, and the quality of the stitching and detail is really good. A lot of times I always find some minuscule error or issue with mine, and besides its ear, nothing stood out to me.

Kuromi Spoon

Our next item is essential for Halloween, because before you can do anything you need to eat :D and this month, we received a Kuromi themed spoon. Just be careful so she mischievously doesn’t make you spill anything ;3 Its worth or costs 5 Sanrio points.

These types of spoons are those curvy, deep ones you will find in a lot of Asian places or served with soup. Because its shape makes it the perfect spoon for collecting the liquids or small items. I assume this could also be really useful for things like cereal, or certain desserts.

The spoon’s long handle and shape on the tip make it handy for storage and easier use. The top is white and black, while the underside is colored lavender. The spoon features an image of Kuromi, and her name is written on the handle, along with a print of grey skulls and pale pink hearts.

It’s so cute! It’s perfect for a cutesy Halloween image, or Kuromi fans like me ♥ I admit that I didn’t use it yet (nor the Sumikko Gurashi one I got a few years back; I KEEP forgetting and we just had soup yesterday DX), but I intend to at some point. Or just keep it for my slowly building Kuromi collection.

Any fellow Cutie will probably remember seeing this exact design in my YumeTwins review; now do you see why I was starting to compare the two boxes a little earlier?

To be fair, they are already very similar though... I should do a comparison review at some point, but I’m not sure how I would go about it. I’ll need to sit down and give it some thought later, I think it could be kind of fun to do.

Oh, anyway, this is an adorable heart-shaped bow. Besides Kuromi and My Melody though, it also features some other friends preparing for a Halloween Party with them! This is worth/costs 10 Sanrio points.

Besides just looking really cute, the bowl is very deep. It’s perfect for any sort of food item you could want to put in it, or you can even store other little items, like essentially you would leave home with (keys, cards, sanitizer, coupons, reusable bags, etc), trinkets or small collectables, toiletries, etc.

I can’t wait to use it~

Ghost Sponge

Our last item, which will help you clean up after a fun Halloween; or if you’re like me help with spring cleaning...

You get 9 melamine ghost-shaped sponges. They’re very soft and squishy, and because there are so many you could do a lot of things with them! Besides cleaning, you could use some to make pictures by dipping them in paint, perform squishy makeovers, decorate in various other ways (they would be cute put on the wall and painted with glowing paint :D), or just use them as a cheap and premade squishy.

Honestly, I’m not sure what I want to do with them yet, if anything. I know we get this stuff to use it, but sometimes I can’t bring myself to ruin it by using it you know? I hate the idea of ruining it and throwing it away, because it feels like a waste of money to me. But when we get copies like this, then it’s not as hard for me, so I will probably spare so many, and use the rest.

Content - 4 out of 5. I’m happy with the items and the quality is really good. No real problems or issues- BUT, usually when we get a Halloween box, they would always include some really cute accessories; one year we got kitty ear clips and paws, one year we got a nurses needle pen and wing hair clips. They usually don’t go mainstream with them like they did this time. 

Theme: 4.5 out of 5. All but 1 item is pretty much definite Halloween material. But the 1 item that isn’t has that sort of spooky-cute vibe, which is what they were going for, so it still works. I feel like the Happy Halloween theme itself was also a little generic/basic.

Total Rank: 8 out of 10 Cuties. I would recommend the items or this box, but I didn’t think it was up to part with their previous Halloween boxes.

♥ Cutie Scale ♥

1. Bowl - On one hand, I like how the design goes with the other items in the YumeTwins box- but on the other, I’m a little bored with the design by now. I love its heart shape though, I’m excited to begin using it!  

2. Ghost Sponge - They’re simple looking, but adorable.

3. Kuromi Spoon - I love the design on the handle, it’s so sweetly dark. I really need to get it and my Neko spoon in the silverware drawer... 

4. Pumpkin Shiba - It’s so cute and round x3

5. Cat Tape - I tend not to use my washi tape (the few times I did, they tend not to stick very well?) but I really like to collect and just look back on them from time to time.

When the Last Sword is Drawn (Shinjinkouen)

I got to see the last sword shinko!! It was a pretty damn fun experience, my first ever live yukigumi shinko, and whilst the casting didn’t end up what I wanted it to be (I was praying for Agachin to get that lead), I was still REALLY impressed, and had a great time!

Ayami Sera, 102nd Class, as Yoshimura Kanichirou (Nozomi Fuuto) – she’s rough, really really rough. She didn't have Daimon’s accent and it really affected the story and the character. She was clearly trying to emulate Daimon a lot and I really think it hurt her interpretation. Daimon has this natural aura and maturity about her and Amichan, being a baby, just. Didn't. I thought she was good, but nothing solid. Her voice is sweet and she's very very earnest, but boy is she lacking. Apparently she's come a long way since phantom earlier this year but I'm not sure she's gonna beat the hulking titan that is Agachin, a year older than her but so much more tracked. Good for her though. Yoshimura is a deceptively hard role, kind and earnest and youthful and yet sad and mature, a killer who does so because there's no other way. He's ruthless and moneygrabbing but he needs to be sympathetic and amichan is just. Young. She plays the role well but she doesn't convince me for even a second. She’s also the GIRLIEST person I’ve ever heard in my life, holy SHIT. It’s cute!

Irodori Michiru, 99th Class, as Shizu/Miyo (Maaya Kiho) – Holy hot damn michiru can sing now?? She's never been an amazing singer in my mind, and this role isn't that heavy on singing, but man she impressed me. I found her better at playing miyo than I did shizu, but I think that kind of bratty selfish teenager is something that she's naturally just brilliant at. She doesn't quite have the natural grace that Kiichan has, she doesn't portray the loneliness and agony shizu faces in the way I've grown accustomed to, but she impressed me.

On the topic of these two, I felt Daimon and Kiichan's absence so hard in their relationship. Daimon and kiichan made it work, their romance wasn't hugely explicit but holy shit was it the basis for a lot of the entire show. Amichan didn't sell the pure primal fear Daimon did when she found out shizu tried to kill herself. Not did I feel the longing and desire Daimon fucking radiated when given the option to hold someone who looked just enough like his wife to make the pain go away, even for only a second. It's a super personal thing for me but it just makes the show worse in my eyes.

Suwa Saki, 99th Class, as Oono Jiroemon (Ayakaze Sakina) – I love this girl. It's her last year of shinkos and she's really fucking good guys. She was quiet and restrained, yet also really emotional. I found her friendship with Amichan a lot more earnest and giddy than Saki and Daimon, and it worked a lot better for the youthful nature of this shinko. It’s not necessarily better, but I REALLY liked that friendship. She seems angrier about a lot of stuff than Saki was, at least to me. Saki was playing it a lot more akin to traditional Japanese customs of honour, and duty, and Suwa was a little more prone to expressing her emotions. Her emotionality might partly be because she only has to put that into this role once, but I was impressed.

Agata Sen, 101st Class, as Hijikata Toshizou (Ayanagi Shou) – BOY I'm almost incomprehensibly biased, this girl has taken me in and ruined my life and I'm not entirely sure I can BE objective. She was different to Shou. Where Shou was endeared by the combined nonsense of Harada/Nagakura/Okita/Saitou, Agachin just wants to get rid of them. She just wants them all to go away and stop being so annoying so she can finally go to bed. She's perfect and hot and beautiful and she got the lightest role she could have but she ROCKED it. I honestly feel like her honkouen role was bigger than her shinko role, or at least far more impressive and more likely to stick in her mind, but I don’t really care? She’s handsome and imposing and carries a kind of maturity and strength FAR beyond what she should be pulling out as a ken-5. She was perfect I will hear nothing against her it was exceptional.

Seika Rian, 100th Class, as Saitou Hajime (Asami Jun) – she was really impressive!! I wasn't sure what I was expecting from shinko Saitou, but she impressed me. I don't have TOO much to say but I loved her and especially her relationship with Ikenami. She’s adorable at iride, has the nicest smile in the world, and I just really love her. I think she’s one of those kids to keep an eye on, she won’t be going anywhere but she’s a talented actress and I really like her.

Manomiya Rui, 100th Class, as Okita Souji (Towaki Sea) – another surprise!! I love Rui, she's got the sweetest smile and the friendliest face and she always seems so delightful at iri and I didn't know what I was expecting from her Souji but it was different. Hitoko plays him with an anger and a charm and Rui plays him a lot more. Sad, I think. Melancholic and restrained and I really liked that interpretation. If you’re looking for someone who has a lovely smile and a charming energy, I really can’t recommend someone more than Rui. I’ve always said, there’s a version of Alex who isn’t in her current club, and is in Rui’s, and that Alex is very happy because Rui ROCKS.

Other mentions

Arisu Himeka (102nd) playing Hime’s role. She’s having fun literally every time she’s onstage, and she was entertaining in the background.

My personal MVP, Yume Maoto (100th). She’s funny as HELL, upping everything Souno Haruto was getting up to, leaving the whole audience in STITCHES.  

Soumi Haruma (103rd) coming out of nowhere looking like a 70s mafia baron and having a voice like an angel. She sounded amazing, and I was expecting absolutely nothing. She’s the most masculine otokoyaku I’ve ever seen in my life, it’s AMAZING.

Kirara Umi (100th) had Ai Sumire's role, and it turns out she's an enka style singer. It didn’t change her solo that much, but it was a really fun surprise and it just added a little extra charm to the song

Aoha Reiya (104th) as Kari – I don't have anything much to say other than I just thought she was really charming?

Jun Hana (102nd) did a really good job as the older version of Mitsu, even though that role really is just. Nothing. I just thought she was cute and I'm excited for Hollywood Gossip.

Ichika Ao (102nd) was ADORABLE, she was adorable and I liked what she was bringing to the role more than Ayana did? That’s not really a slight against Ayana, just that I found Ao REALLY impressive, and fucking adorable.

Hiyori Haruma (101st) had her douki (Agachin)’s role as Ikenami. She wasn't anything exceptional but she WAS cute and her and dynamic with saitou was cute, I thought. She was more teasing than Agachin was, but I think a substantial part of that was due to the fact Rio’s Saitou felt a lot softer than Aasa’s. I think with this role especially, I’m VERY biased, but she did a good job, so props to her! I will say, Agachin and Izumiko have a super cute dynamic in skystage content, and I love them together. They’re really cute together, I enjoy their friendship a lot. Izumiko also really captures the feeling that Ikenami is the underclassman of the Shinsengumi, trying to butter up the superiors before having a change of heart and developing as a person. Her scream of “Yoshimura-san!” was also… really good. Heartbreaking, and really good.

Here are eight female sims for download inspired by @gloomfish’s Songs as Sims challenge. I have always loved the song God Bless America- And All of the Beautiful Women in it by Lana Del Rey because it really feels like a feel good girls anthem about how we all need to stick together and lift each other up which I strive to do.

For these sims I really tried to do many different body types-- Nikki is very much a pear shape whereas Noelle and Naomi have more of a slender build, for example-- and have many different races and ethnicities, too. Noelle was originally going to have more Hispanic inspired elements in her features, but in the end I think she looks more Native American. I really did try and make them all have their own personalities and stuff like that, so I hope they shine through.

Takemasa wants to act something but calls Kuina “Subaru” and gets laughed at by Kuina because of it.

Hayato is talking about Takemasa who is not wearing his mask. Kuina films Takemasa and Takemasa is telling him to finally stop filming!

6 games this year alone - post mortem

At the beginning of this year I made a plan to make 6 games in 2019, one being released every two months. My initial idea was that I use the first month to plan everything, and then use the second month to make everything, with the release happening on the last day of the second month.

I released two games this year under varying levels of success of hitting those deadlines: Saltwater Shells and Reach Out (and grab a hold of your goals). I was beginning to work on a Yume Nikki fangame for YNFG Jam, but I never finished it beyond a few early areas and messing with the tile design and minor animations.

The goal of this plan was to release more games than I had released in 2018, which was a grand ol total of 3. I was hoping, with giving myself deadlines that were not just like a week long jam, having 2 months would let me create something that was a little bit more thought out and well articulated.

Such is the nature of game design that I don’t think I really hit my goals all that much. I’m still happy with what I made to a certain extent, but the extraneous issues with the games and their release are what I think I need to work on.

Going chronologically, Saltwater Shells really tested my metal in the best of ways, and I’m pretty happy with a lot of it. I think I was overly ambitious but almost everything I set out to do is in that game. The only things that got cut was additional NPCs that you would’ve been able to interact with and give a little bit more narrative to the action of collecting sea shells. I think the game works without it, but that’s mostly everything I cut out from that game.

The release of Saltwater Shells was delayed by 10 days. A large bulk of the asset work for Saltwater Shells was done before then actually, it was just the final code that I was working on that needed to be in place so, you know, the game was actually playable. Also around that time was when I left my previous job and started at my new one. I had initially planned to be done with the game earlier since I was going to have a week off between jobs, but then it turned into just a weekend between jobs. I had to travel to Wisconsin, got a really terrible cold the day I traveled, and then travel back over the course of 3 days. I was still sick at my new job when I started it too and it was a lot of things to juggle really quickly and I still wasn’t done with the game.

Saltwater Shells still released though. I’m really happy about that. But the deadlines ended up being something that I kept having problems with. This ends up being a recurring issue, if you could believe it.

The second game was Reach Out (and grab ahold of your goals). I planned it from the start to be a crane game style game, and maybe a little bit more depressing in terms of your inability to accomplish life necessary things due to executive dysfunction or what have you. I also tried using Construct3 for the first time. So it was a learning curve of getting used to a new engine, as well as trying to pull off my plan. I used Construct3 because I really hate coding guys. Like I really hate it. I will code because I have to and I have the skills to do it, but if there’s one thing I would love to not do for the rest of my life, it would be coding. I experimented with trying to use a couple of other engines for this game, but what appeals to me about Construct was it’s pretty painless 2D physics, something that really trips me up in Unity constantly.

Being able to make a crane game was really rewarding, but really difficult turns out. This game ended up being delayed by 10 days from its original April 30th planned release date. I was really hoping to be able to get the game out on time this time, but I got sick again, and the physics method I was using was literally breaking everything or made the game unplayable.

The way Reach Out looks now is cut down significantly from where it originally stood. There was going to be at least 5 more levels and different goals per level of the crane game. There was also going to be a better method of gamifying your energy score vs. what it exists as now. I just ran out of time again.

I didn’t make any other games after that. My Yume Nikki fangame was going somewhere, but I got occupied with playing a lot of dungeons and dragons, and even wrote my own campaign. I didn’t get very far, but I liked what I had made but my energy to make games was waning after Reach Out.

I don’t like Reach Out as a game. I like the crane game part of it, because I love crane games. But it just serves as a grim reminder of my own inability to take care of myself, ironically, something the game tries to promote. My mental health went to hell before Reach Out came out and I don’t know if I’ve really recovered from the headspace I put myself in trying to finish that game. I really hurt myself mentally and physically trying to produce something that I knew was the antithesis of the product I was creating. I hate lying and dishonesty more than anything and I was being entirely dishonest with myself and my audience putting it out there under the conditions it was created in.

Promises and deadlines are the enemy to my success I think in a lot of ways. I really hate putting deadlines on things, for some reason time sensitive activities have always driven my anxiety up a wall that paralyze me. “How did you survive school?” a lot of procrastination and likewise bad mental health places. I put a lot of pressure on myself, and I think self-imposed deadlines hurt me much more than those others assign to me.

Knowing myself and my limits, I don’t want to think that this project was some kind of self flagellation, trying to push myself into a bad crunch corner that games so often perpetuate just to meet a deadline. I did QA for games, and crunch fucking sucks. I do QA for a photography company now, and crunch still fucking sucks.

The worst part about all of this is that I've been trying to write more scripts for games, I’ve been trying to learn how to use ren’py and some other game engines I’ve come across. I want to make games because I still really love them, but there’s like some kind of negative spike in the back of my head that doesn’t want me to make another game right now.

I’ve been taking a break the past couple of months from feeling pressured to create something, I have been chilling, drawing stuff for dnd, reading sherlock holmes stories, and watching a lot of youtube videos. I’m trying not to think about it and let myself recover from… some kind of hell I created for myself.

This post-mortem kind of sucks because all it really shows is that I learned I can’t beat myself and should try to work within my limits. I think that’s valuable but I really want to make a game right now. Anyway, I’m writing it also as a way to explain what’s been going on in my head lately surrounding making games. Games are fun and I’m glad you guys all like the weird ones I’ve made. I hope when I post a new one you all will enjoy it.

“Oh come one,” you said, rubbing your face. “Don’t get all self-righteous on me.”

“Self-righteous!” Yume rolled her eyes. “I’m worried. This guy he just… he doesn’t seem right.”

“You don’t even know him!”

“Exactly! I’ve been your friend for how many years? This is the first guy you ever dated that you haven’t brought around!”

You had a snappy retort lined up but at the word ‘date’ you lost your thunder.

“I wouldn’t exactly call it dating…” you muttered and Yume gestured wildly at you.

“Red flag!”

You scoffed, tossing a couch pillow at her. “Get out of here with your red flags.”

“There’s something off about the whole situation you’re in.” She was reaching for her phone, her brows furrowed. “You don’t bring ‘the man’ around, you’re letting him give you all these marks, he’s breaking stuff in your house, he keeps calling you. All I’m seeing is red flags. How long have you been seeing him?”

Yume threw up air quotes as she spoke the last two words that made you flinch.

Truth or lie? Truth or lie?

“A couple weeks,” you said, splitting the difference.

She pointed at you. “You’re lying.”

“Fine, don’t believe me.” You were bristling up, appalled she didn’t believe your half-lie. The television show had clearly been forgotten. “I don’t have to prove anything to you.”

“When did you get so…” Yume paused, screwing her face up as she searched for the proper word. “Antagonistic?”

“Antagonistic!?” You snorted. “I got antagonistic the moment you started up with your holier-than-thou attitude! Last time I checked, I’m an adult capable of making my own decisions. I’m not an idiot and I don’t need you coming around hounding me about things you don’t even know about!”

“I’m your best friend!” Yume said, voice rising slightly as passion was interjected into your conversation. “It hurts that you don’t want to share this with me! What, do you think I’m going to judge you or something?”

“You clearly are judging me!” Your voice was also getting higher and louder, matching hers. “Literally, rewind the clock back fifteen seconds!”

“Honey, you’re confusing--”

“Now you’re getting condescending!”

“-- concern with judgment!”

“Yum, come on, I think I can handle myself--”

“Humor me. Please, humor me for like five minutes. I just want to ask you some questions about your relationship--”

“Stop. This is--”

“-- Please. I’m begging you. If our friendship means anything to you, just answer these questions. Please.”

The levity in her voice made the argument in you die. Her hands were pressed together, face twisted into a pleading frown. You inhaled deeply and loudly, before closing your eyes.

“What kind of questions?”

“Simple ones to make sure you’re okay. Just answer them truthfully. Yes or no. You don’t need to give details.”

She was tapping away on her phone and you reached for your water bottle, uneasily shifting your gaze between her and the television. A new episode of had already begun to autoplay -- you had no idea what was happening.

“Ready?” she asked and you could only shrug in response. “Now, these are questions about him, okay? First one -- does he admit to his mistakes? Does he accept responsibility for his behavior?”

No.

Well, sometimes. He seemed… apologetic enough with the whole lab incident. That’s admitting a mistake, right?

“Yes,” you lied, gripping your water bottle tighter, trying to keep the same apathetic face.

Yume pursed her lips but continued.

“Does he accept your word? Give you the benefit of the doubt?”

I mean, there was the whole hero fucker comment. But you told him you only had eyes for him. He trusts you…

Right?

“Yes…” you answered, though there was some uncertainty in your tone. Catching yourself, you nodded firmly at Yume, an attempt to make it seem as if the wording of the question had tripped you up, not what it was asking.

“Does he ask, not expect? Is he willing to comprise? Does he accept change?”

… Yes? Well, no. But also yes.

Mostly no.

“Yes,” you said after a tight swallow. “We haven’t been seeing each other for very long, so it’s hard to answer these types of questions--”

“Does he refuse to intimidate or manipulate? Does he respect physical space and express himself non-violently?”

That’s a hard no.

“Yes,” you responded. Yume lowered her phone, looking at you tiredly. You flared up. “Yes! Listen, if you’re not going to believe me--”

“Does he communicate openly and truthfully?”

Maybe? Well, he refused to tell you his name…

“Most of the time, yes.”

She didn’t like that answer. Her frown grew in size.

“Last question -- does he value your opinions? Does he listen non-judgmentally? Is he understanding?”

Is he understanding? You had to keep yourself from releasing a sharp laugh. No, you wouldn’t call All Might particularly understanding.

“Yes!” you answered. “Yes, yes, yes! What is this? What are you trying to get at?���

“Basic questions to determine if your relationship is healthy.” She turned her phone toward you so you could see the chart she had been reading from. “Any ‘no’ is a red flag.”

You were rubbing your face again, mussing your eyebrows as your hands traveled over your eyes. There was a pinching inside your skull -- you weren’t sure if it was a headache brewing or the side-effect of the adrenaline from your disagreement.

“You always do this,” you snapped, glaring at her when you removed your palms from your eyes. “You always come in and make me feel like shit about my life.”

Yume looked dumbstruck, caught off-guard by the venom in your voice.

“I never want to make you feel like bad--!”

“That’s bullshit.” You could feel anger and nerves pricking the back of your neck, making your hands shake and heart pound. “I get it Yume. Honestly, I do. You’re the golden child. The one who has her life together.”

“I think we’re getting off topic here,” Yume said, holding up her hands to try and settle you down. “I just want you to be happy and safe!”

But you couldn’t. She had opened the Pandora’s Box of your emotions and all your stress over the past couple of weeks manifested itself into anger.

Anger at her.

“I’m the fuck-up of the group.” Your lip was curling slightly as your hold on your water tightened. “The girl who got fired from her first good job. Who went and worked at her shitty lab with her night shifts while everyone else went on to live their perfect lives. You always have to swoop in to save me, don’t ya Yum? First in school, now in the real world.”

An awkwardness was settling over the room. You were ready to unleash while Yume was more taken aback. She had only seen you get mad a few times over minor stuff. This… this was something more.

“Hey--”

“You’re not my mother. I don’t need you to coddle me. Rescue me. I didn’t need the Odaiba Lab job. I was doing just fine on my own.”

You felt drained -- you didn’t have the personality or motivation to go after your best friend.

A tense silence blanketed your living room, neither one of you wanting to break.

A minute passed. Then two.

You didn’t like it. You weren’t one to snap out in anger.

You were so stressed.

“I was doing fine,” you reiterated, but it was less toward Yume. How many personal storms had you weathered? How many times did you think your life was on the brink of capsizing, only for the clouds to break and the rain to stop? “I’ve always been fine. I always made it work.”

A beeping started going off from the kitchen. Yume eyes flickered in the direction it was coming from before falling back on you.

It was okay.

It always ended up okay.

“I don’t know what I have with him,” you grumbled, ignoring the loud and repetitive sound in the background. You had fixated on a pillow. You were talking at the pillow. “He’s not the best person in the world. He has his issues. And it might not be healthy. But I like him. And I think…” You shrugged at the pillow. “I think I can handle him.”

“But long-term?” You heard a sigh. “I… I don’t want you to cling to someone because you don’t want to be alone.”

Don’t want to be alone.

“What are these, the best years of our lives?” She continued with a wry smile you didn’t see. “Don’t waste time on someone who doesn’t deserve you. You’re worth more than that. That’s all I’m going to say.”

You still wouldn’t look up, the beeping was continuing and Yume cleared her throat.

“I know you can handle yourself,” she added and you flinched, already regretting your outburst. “I only step in because I want you to be at your best. I want you to be happy. I’d offer to stop but… I don’t think I could if I wanted to.”

You cracked a smile at that. 

At least she was being honest.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

“The potatoes are done,” you mumbled, standing. “I’ll get ‘em.”
