Tri-Arame: A Break? No Way!

Primary Pairing Trio: YuuAyuSetsu Words: ~2k Rating: G Time Frame: Sometime during the 2nd trimester of their 2nd year? Later? Story Arc: Stand Alone

Author’s Note: How many detours will I take? How many WIPs must I start before I can finish one? Will I ever finish any of the works I started over the last couple months? Only my µ’s muse knows.

Anyway, this chapter was born entirely out of a single comment from myon as we discussed the new songs for the Nijigasaki girls. I don’t want to spoil it entirely, so I’ll include it in the followup post.

Also, the girls of R3birth have not made their anime debut, so they will not be appearing in this scene. Perhaps I may come back and make changes later if they are introduced in the second season.

Summary: It’s time for everyone in the Nijigasaki School Idol Club to have a new solo! And Yuu is going to help them all.

Movement at the edge of Ayumu’s focus caught her eye and she looked up.

“Are you alright, Yuu-chan?” She asked the twin-tailed girl beside her under the kotatsu.

“I’m fine.” Yuu offered a smile that was nowhere near its normal power.

“You’ve stayed up late every night this week.” Ayumu reminded. “It’s fine to take a break.”

“A break? No way!” Yuu shook her head. “I need to help you guys.”

“I believe Ayumu-san and I can take care of anything else tonight.” Setsuna joined from her spot opposite Ayumu. “We’ve made a lot of progress thanks to your help, Yuu-san.” She smiled, though Ayumu noted even hers was not as brilliant as usual.

The three girls had been working together for hours since arriving at Ayumu’s place after school, breaking only for dinner. The project was a pair of new solo songs for Ayumu and Setsuna for an upcoming Live being planned by the school idol club. Although, together may have been a little bit of an overstatement, as Ayumu and Setsuna had each been primarily focused on their own song while Yuu assisted as needed.

And on the topic of Yuu’s assistance, she had been helping the rest of the club as well all week. Thus, all the late nights. She had actually ended up staying at Rina’s, Shizuku’s, Karin’s and Kanata’s places after missing the last train the first couple nights and not bothering the next two. Tonight, it was Ayumu’s turn and they had invited Setsuna to join them.

“Are you sure?” Yuu seemed more than a little dejected.

Whatever Setsuna was about to say in response was interrupted by a yawn. “Mm…” She ended up humming and nodding after.

“It seems we should take our own advice and turn in as well.” Ayumu decided. “We can continue later this weekend. But for now, you and I need to rest up for tomorrow, Yuu-chan.” She reminded her friend of the plans they had with her parents. “Or today, actually.” She corrected, noticing the clock on her headboard.

“I suppose.” Yuu sighed and crawled over to Ayumu’s bed before pulling herself up and under the covers.

“I’m sorry, Setsuna-chan.” Ayumu suddenly apologized. “I got so wrapped up in our work that I completely forgot to set out a futon for you.” She stood and moved to her closet to retrieve the bedding.

“I’ll help.” Setsuna assured, sliding the table a little to make room before getting up to retrieve a pillow.

“Oh, and one more thing.” Ayumu stepped over to her plushie display and grabbed the pink rabbit before turning and handing it to Setsuna.

“… Right… Thank you.” Pink dusted the raven-haired girl’s cheeks as she accepted.

Ayumu opened her eyes to an unfamiliar sound. Soft, almost imperceptible scratches sounded from somewhere in the room. Then a sound she recognized; a page being turned. She sat up and immediately spotted Yuu setting the table, scrawling away at the paperwork for the songs they had worked on last night.

“Yuu-chan?” She murmured, keeping her volume down as she realized Setsuna was still sleeping behind Yuu.

“Mm?” The girl with green tips looked up from her work, set a hand down for support and twisted her shoulders around to face the redhead. “G’mornin’ Ayumu.” She offered a smile that was barely more energetic than the prior night.

“How long have you been up?” Ayumu asked, sliding out of bed, stepping over Setsuna and making her way to her normal spot at the table.

“Dunno.” Yuu admitted. “I dreamed up some good ideas for almost everyone and needed to get them out on paper before I forgot it all.”

Ayumu couldn’t help smiling. She loved Yuu’s unwavering support, even when it lead to hyperfocus and nigh-all-consuming obsession. And while she wished Yuu would take better care of herself, she had long since vowed to do what she could to fill in where needed when it came to her health and wellbeing.

“Are you going to be alright coming along with us today?” She asked.

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Yuu nodded. “I love hanging out with you and your parents. I can take a nap afterward.”

Well, at least she recognizes she needs more sleep. Ayumu conceded to herself.

A knock came at the door, followed by Ayumu’s mother’s voice. “Are you girls up? I’ll have breakfast ready in a moment.”

The sound caused Setsuna to stir, so Ayumu was no longer worried about waking her.

“We’ll be out in a few.” Ayumu responded.

“Oh, Setsuna-chan, good morning.” Yuu greeted the other girl as she slowly sat up and yawned.

Setsuna stretched. “Good morning, Yuu-san, Ayumu-san.”

“Good morning, Setsuna-chan.” Ayumu added.

“I had a bunch of new ideas,” Yuu continued “though we probably can’t fit them all into just these songs, and probably shouldn’t try, but maybe we’ll be able to use some in the next set? Anyway, take a look at it later today and let me know what you think.” She held out a stack of sheets.

“Thank you, Yuu-san.” Setsuna accepted and slipped the pages into her bag.

The three then rotated through the bathroom to wash their faces and get ready for the day.

ScarletStorm: Ayumu-san

UeharaAyumu: What’s up Setsuna-chan?

ScarletStorm: I wanted to contact you privately so as to avoid possibly embarrassing Yuu-san.

UeharaAyumu: Yuu-chan?

UeharaAyumu: What do you mean?

ScarletStorm: I believe she mixed up some of the paperwork for our songs.

ScarletStorm: A lot of it, actually.

Oh? Ayumu crawled over to the table to check what was left there. Sure enough, much of it was for Setsuna’s solo.

UeharaAyumu: That appears to be the case

ScarletStorm: I can stop by later tonight so we can swap them.

UeharaAyumu: No need to make a special trip

UeharaAyumu: We’ll see each other again Monday morning

As soon as Ayumu sent the second message, she realized what Setsuna was probably going to reply.

ScarletStorm: I was hoping to work a little more on it tomorrow.

And there it was. Yuu wasn’t the only workaholic when it came to school idol things. Ayumu laughed lightly to herself and shook her head. She was about to agree and set up a time to meet when a different thought occurred to her.

UeharaAyumu: Perhaps we can use this opportunity to help each other?

UeharaAyumu: Look at what the other has done from a different perspective and maybe do some editing or offer some advice?

UeharaAyumu: A little like what Yuu-chan has been doing for us, but we both have different perspectives than her

UeharaAyumu: And each other

ScarletStorm: That’s a great idea, Ayumu-san!

ScarletStorm: It will a little like our Shuffle Festival from a little while back.

ScarletStorm: Actually, no, not really.

ScarletStorm: We’re not covering the other’s song, just helping them write one.

UeharaAyumu: Well there’s no reason we cannot add a little of our own influence to the other’s song

UeharaAyumu: I’ve always admired your style, Setsuna-chan

UeharaAyumu: So I wouldn’t mind seeing what influence you might have on a song that I might sing

UeharaAyumu: Then on the other side, I would like to see what I can add to a song of yours

UeharaAyumu: And on the topic of the Shuffle Festival, I actually kind of hoped I would end up with CHASE! instead of Kasumi-chan

UeharaAyumu: Yuu-chan still likes to play it on her piano every so often and I can’t help humming along when she does

UeharaAyumu: After all, it was the song that inspired me to become a school idol and her to join and restart the club

There was a noticeable pause before Setsuna began typing again. Then another pause. And another.

ScarletStorm: Thank you, Ayumu-san.

ScarletStorm: That song has always meant a lot to me.

ScarletStorm: As such, I am very happy to hear that you and Yuu-san continue to enjoy it.

ScarletStorm: That said, I also enjoy your style.

ScarletStorm: However, I believe Emma-san was a better pick than I for covering Yume e no Ippo.

ScarletStorm: At least she was then.

ScarletStorm: My time with Ayumu-san and Shizuku-san in A・ZU・NA has allowed me to experience many more facets of being a school idol than I would have otherwise on my own.

ScarletStorm: You have allowed me to expand my knowledge and skills of being a school idol.

ScarletStorm: It would be an honor to sing a song in homage to Ayumu-san’s style in exchange for her singing one in mine.

Ayumu smiled.

UeharaAyumu: I’ll let Yuu-chan know we’re trading notes for a little while when I check on her later to make sure she’s taking the break she needs

UeharaAyumu: And speaking of breaks, don’t you be staying up to late working on my song

UeharaAyumu: Both you and Yuu-chan have a bad habit of overworking yourselves and it makes me worry about you

Scarlet Storm: Thank you for your concern, Ayumu-san.

ScarletStorm: I will be sure to go to bed at a decent time tonight.

UeharaAyumu: Alright

UeharaAyumu: See you at the station Monday morning

ScarletStorm: Yes, see you then.

“Wha~?” Kasumi exclaimed, planting both hands on the table and leaning toward two of her seniors on the other side. “Ayumu-sempai and Setsuna-sempai are trading songs?”

Ayumu laughed lightly. “Just trading some influence in style.”

“And learning new ways to look at our songs,” Setsuna added excitedly “how we share them with our fans and ultimately grow as school idols.”

“Kasumin wants to grow as a school idol too!” Kasumi whined. “Senpai!” She turned toward Yuu. “Help Kasumin make her songs even cuter!”

“Yuu-senpai has already helped you a lot, Kasumi-san.” Shizuku pointed out from beside the ash blonde. “I believe what is being suggested here is a little different.”

“It sounds more like our recent Shuffle Festival.” Karin observed.

“That’s what I thought at first as well.” Setsuna acknowledged.

“But what Setsu and Ayu-pyon are doing is trading influence on creating songs, not just covering the other’s songs.” Ai spoke up.

“Exactly.” Ayumu agreed.

“Sounds fun. Ai’m in.” The blonde grinned.

“I would like to try something new as well.” Rina stated flatly. “I would like to discover new ways to connect with my fans.”

“Hmmm…” Emma considered “I enjoyed singing Ayumu-chan’s pure song during the Shuffle Festival, but I wonder how it might feel to sing a cool song like Karin-chan’s or a dramatic one like Shizuku-chan’s.”

“Or a cute one like Kasumin’s?” Kasumi asked.

“I think everything Emma-chan sings would end up being cute.” Kanata’s voice was slightly muffled by her pillow before she turned her head. “Wouldn’t you agree, Karin-chan?”

“O… of course.” Karin didn’t seem to have expected to be asked such a question.

“What kind of influence would you want to have on your song, Kanata-san?” Yuu asked.

“I already get inspiration and influence from Haruka-chan.” Kanata drawled.

“Well, this all sounds like a lot of fun.” Yuu continued. “But if we’re going to overhaul everyone’s songs, it’s going to be a lot of work. But…” she leaned over retrieve a sizable stack of sheets from her bag “I came up with a ton of new and random stuff once Ayumu and Setsuna-chan revealed their idea to me. Take a look and see if anything gives you ideas. I’ll be happy to help wherever I can, as always.”

Seven hands reached forward to take random pages and several discussions broke out among the group.

Ayumu glanced at the twin-tailed girl beside her. Looks like it might be another sleep deprived week for Yuu-chan. She worried silently. Maybe I’ll take a night in the middle of the week this time. Oh. Setsuna-chan and I are pretty far along with our songs, so maybe we can all take a break that night. Perhaps an anime movie night, so long as we limit it to only a few episodes and not an entire series.

Someone said her name to get her attention and Ayumu was taken from her thoughts and into a discussion about a possible lyric change. The next couple hours were filled with excitement and anticipation as the girls of the Nijigasaki School Idol Club began looking at their songs in a new light.

I am not tagging this with a spoiler warning but read on at your own risk. Invision (and this review) contain spoilers for the wider Dark-Hunter verse.

Let's start with something important to those reading Chronicles of Nick and The Dark Hunter Universe. I'm not sure where Sherri is up to in her story of Jaden in the DH books (I'm picking and choosing my way through them), but I know Jaden is an upcoming book that should lay his story bare. Invision may contain massive spoilers for Jaden's book. That reason only Jared knows? Yeah, that is in here and that piece of lore is unlikely to change between the two. Most of the spoilers I tag in this review are relevant to not just Invision but Jaden. If you want to go into Jaden's story without prior knowledge do not read Invision. And I apologise in advance this review gets quite long.

This is another book with a whole lot of story to tell. And it leads well into Intensity, the last book of the series. Well may not be the right word it ends on a cliffhanger. There is a lot of lore added, we finally get an explanation of pith points in a way that makes sense. We meet some new characters and learn a lot pf backstory on some of the characters that we already knew. But there is a lot of time spent on family and found family as is normal. It turns out that even less of the characters than we thought are strictly human. I enjoyed this a lot it helps me understand a lot more and I live for Sherri's lore.

My queen is back. Hello, my beloved Lilliana. Never has a character so long dead had such a lasting and irrefutable impact on a series while barely appearing. Xevikan's Myone is also a powerful woman. We finally find out how Caleb met Lilliana met. Including the wonderful exchange "Are all demons as gigantic as you?" "Depends on the species." "Are all women as brave as you?" "Depends on the species." (Lilliana & Caleb Malphas, p62). She chose his name because of its meaning "the faithful, fearless warrior who defends what he believes with everything he has" (Lilliana, p66), which isn't far off the Hebrew meaning. Myone was Xev's anchor his reason for existence the reason he was willing to do so much. His story isn't this dissimilar to Braiths in a way. Blessedly the brothers are back on speaking terms.

Book random dump

Reading Cay openly admit brotherhood with Xev is something I needed to see and made me smile.

"I think I know now why the gods made the two of you so incredibly hot. You'd be insufferable otherwise" Kody (p.85) about Caleb and Nick. I mean I can totally see why people tell Kody to ask her other boyfriend. She stopped pretending a while back.

I like the choice to interchange Kody and Nyira now. But what is Nyira? It doesn't appear to be a name.

This is the first time I've seen any indication that Simi will get her own story. Kody knows who her husband will be. There were only three options in the room at that point. Jaden, Xev or Caleb. All will exist is the DH universe. Jaden needs good in his life. I'll take that and run.

Cadegan is more complicated than I thought. In his bio he calls Thorn his lost brother, Noir gives aways his parentage Thorn is his father. Well, Son of No One just got bumped up my tbr.

Is this the first time we've heard Caleb's full designation? Esme Daeve. Like Nick thrives on fights, rage.

Bout time we got a demon hunter. Didn't expect that character though.

“He was a chaos god, Nick. The god of blood disease, fire, plagues, famine, violent death, fear, and destruction.” (Caleb p.175) Good lord Xev. You really did get all the fun stuff, and he's the Malachai's blood slave.

As a side point, I'm adding a could of pieces of general tidbits because I keep forgetting them.

The six generals of the ušumgallu. Grim, Bane and Laguerre who live permanently earthside. The others who had to be called, Xevikan, Livia and Yrre.

Nick's six generals (chosen at the end of Instinct). "Nashira. Xev. Dagon. Aeron. Kody. Caleb." Narshira is the yōkai formerly trapped in Nick's Grimoire. Aeron the forgotten son of the Morrígan. Dagon, son of Noir and Hekate, aided Lycaon to create the Were-hunters.

The six primal gods. Those of the light; Razer, Cam and Verlyn (aka Jaden). Those of the dark; Noir, Azure and Braith. Braith is complicated, while she aligns to the dark she is more grey. Two of the primary gods are missing; Razer and Braith. Verlyn was captured. Making me wonder... is Razer in play already and just not revealing his identity. Cam is Menyara, Verlyn is Jaden both are known in DH but their identities aren't known.

So... Parentage. Who is related to who is a big deal in the CoN series. But relatives are power and mostly seem to be an indicator of where your allegiance should lie. There is a theme that appears of the abandoned half children acting out of spite for one parent at least until they find themselves. As Xev puts it “Born of both sides. Forever lured between them. Never trusted by either, and cursed by both.” (p.287). Nick's line is particularly important. Did anyone else not realise that Xev was Nick's Grandfather during that wonderful bomb drop during Chapter 8 of Instinct? I reread it knowing the truth and yeah the indication is there. Mostly in the way he looks at Cherise, maybe she favours Myone more than we know and in the way he speaks. But it isn't said. And I really think it needed to be. In light of this and other revelations halfway through Invision, I decided I needed to make a small family tree because good lord this should not be that complicated but it feels like it is. I think there are minor allusions to Nick's tree somehow being connected to Kody's (through the primordials) but I can't figure it out. I'm writing this after I binge-read Intensity which adds a whole lot more so I'm adding it to that review instead. Beware spoilers if you go there.

One last thing from Dream Warrior... “I’m helping to train the new Malachai and I just wanted to know something.” “That is?” “Does anyone else know you’re related to him?” (Jared and M'Adoc, p.314). By Dream Warrior Nick is in his mid-twenties and everyone knows he's the Malachai. My question which is not answered there. Does Jared know? He's powerful and Nick is his blood he should be able to pick it. I've always thought Dark Hunter was the Ambrose timeline but I don't think it is. Theoretically, M'Adoc doesn't exist in that timeline.

God this review is long. I knew that anyway. My Goodreads review does have the worst of the potential Dark-Hunter spoilers, they relate to Jaden.

I’ve been spending an embarrassing amount of my free time slowly reading through Hatsukoi Zombie. The premise is absolutely ridiculous, and I was actually very close to dropping it during the first chapter, but it takes some turns and I’m now completely engaged.

The details of the premise get tricky to explain, but the core of it is that Tarou, our protagonist, gets the ability to see what he dubs “First Love Zombies”. They are “physical” manifestations of a guy’s first love, with a healthy layer of delusion on top, making the “zombie” (though they act more like ghosts) practically a guy’s ideal girl. However, nobody can see them except for Tarou and one of his childhood friends, whose backstory would require its own paragraph.

That idea alone is absurd. What’s more is that these delusions have a sort of unconditional love for their creators. It all sounds so skeevy on the surface and it’s why I almost dropped it immediately. However, after a few chapters they start to get explained in more detail, in particular what their purpose is, and these ghosts ended up being a large part of why I’m loving this comic so much.

I’ve always been a big sucker for world building and plausible immersive worlds with internally consistent rules, and the “first love zombies” have rules. Despite the completely ridiculous situation he’s put in, Tarou takes a very analytical and scientific approach to the whole thing.

The first couple volumes are dedicated to him observing these things to try and figure out how they work, interact with the world around them, and most importantly: how to get rid of them. They’re quite a nuisance and distraction. He, along with the viewer, start to learn that they’re more accurately described as a particular reflection of their creator’s subconscious thoughts and romantic desires. As he learns more about them, he starts using this information to help pair up lovers, causing the ghosts to disappear, as their first love is now real.

It’s a charmingly “realistic” way to handle them, and one that greatly appeals to me. It turns what’s basically magic into very real feeling laws of nature and life.

I really want to write a whole separate post on just the nature of the love ghosts. It’s genuinely fascinating, as the comic has an excellent attention to detail when it comes to its world building. In re-reading old chapters, you’ll notice that the behavior of the ghosts, Eve in particular, is consistent with rules you don’t find out about until much later.

Speaking of Eve, she’s the MC’s own first love zombie, and she’s unique in that her creator can see and interact with her. This isn’t supposed to happen because it breaks the natural order of how these ghosts are meant to work. Again, I’d love to write a whole post on just this topic, because it is great food for thought. It’s interesting for a lot of the same reasons I think Youmu and Myon from Touhou are so interesting.

It’s a comic that has everything. It’s got wacky romcom hijinks, supernatural elements with internally consistent rules, tons and tons of characters, gyuaru, delinquents, childhood friends that you know are destined to lose but you can’t help but root for because they deserve a happy ending, absurdly wealthy families with mansions, lots of sleuthing and mystery solving, hyper competent butlers, cross-dressing, ridiculous school “battle” arc, and a genuine sense of history to its world that makes it feel like a real and lived in place.

This is a really easy comic for me to gush about, so I’m cutting this post off here. There’s just too much to talk about. Thankfully, it’s a finished comic, but I’m only halfway through. Hopefully it keeps this up, because it may very well make it onto my next 3x3.

I read through your tags on works and saw mention of Luke becoming stranger after Yoda's training, of how people on Tatooine might react. So I wanted to ask about your thoughts on that, on farmers and neighbors and all who knew laughing bright child running through dusty streets becoming legend and hero and Jedi, and perhaps of older Tatooininas, ones that remember all too clearly that Skywalker is name of slaves since ebginning.

“I don’t think they’re staring at me,” Han says with a grim sort of certainty. He’s clutching his mug too tightly, his knuckles white around it, and even whiter where he’s holding Leia’s hand—Luke is too tired, exhausted down to his bones, to do anymore more than note it. Han holding onto Leia’s hand so tightly that his blood is chased out..

Luke blinks, and then exhales.

“I was…”

Kalix Darksky took their order—the Darkskys have owned this cafe since Luke can remember, but when Lando said, Hey, I could go for something to eat, and Leia, still dressed in the cantina-dancer rags said, I’m starving, Luke had found himself answering, I know where to go.

His hands were still aching from the lightsaber, how tightly he’d clutched at it as he’d killed them. (He didn’t have to, the lightsaber moved through them like they were just air, nothing there. And then there was nothing there.) His chest ached from—well, that too, but still he’d led their awkward little band to the Darksky cantina, because he didn’t know where else.

“Luke?” Talesin Darksky had said, choked out. His eyes were wide as the sky they were both named after. “Luke, where…how…?”

“A table,” Luke had said, conscious of the hem of his black cloak dragging in the sand, and how Han was mostly draped over Leia; Lando’s still-bleeding side and Chewbacca, looming over them all.

Talesin’s Darksky’s eyes were wide, he didn’t seem to be breathing.

“A table,” Luke repeated. “For my friends.”

“Of—course, sure,” Talesin said, and he’d moved by sheer instinct, his eyes still dark and trained on Luke’s face. Even as he’d led them back into the recesses of the dimly-lit cantina, he kept looking, darting glances from the corners of his eyes. “Let me know—”

“Thank you,” Luke said stiffly, and Talesin swallowed whatever he had been about to say. He bowed his head, and then he was striding away towards the kitchen.

Luke had collapsed to his seat, feeling as though all the blood had been very suddenly drained from his body. Han was still half-blind from the carbonite, even if he insisted he wasn’t, and he was staring somewhere over Luke’s shoulder. Thank—whoever for small favors, Lando seemed to realize this and announced that he and Chewie were going to help themselves at the bar, so it was just Luke and Han and Leia suddenly, the three of them.

“I was…” Luke tries again, and even though Han’s eyes are fixed somewhere over Luke’s left shoulder, Luke feels his skin prickle. “Yeah,” he finally chokes out.

“Yeah,” Han says with a half-shrug. “They’re not staring at me, that’s what I said.”

Luke’s sense of the Force is—humming, churning over and through the cantina. He can feel them, feel them, murmuring about him, staring. And it was different, stranger and heavier than it had been…before. (It’s not as though he hadn’t been an object of fascination, the Lars’ orphaned nephew who stubbornly insisted on wearing a slave’s surname. Even more when that nephew grew up odd and dreaming of the stars. But it had been light, the ordinary scrutiny of a small community where Irain Redstone dying her hair purple had been gossip for three cycles.)

“Maybe they’re staring at me,” Leia adds, with something of the old imperiousness, the princess, edging through her voice. However, when Luke looks at her, her eyes are warm.

“Why would they be looking at you?” Han asks, turning to squint at her.

“Well, I did kill a Hutt lord,” Leia says, flicking the tail of her long braid over her shoulder. (They ignore the unsteady note in her voice. The marks of the chain are still red on her neck, her hands.)

Han scoffs. “Sure, but they don’t know that.”

Luke relaxes by increments as they argue back and forth—they’re not even arguing, really, their voices low and gentle, and Leia keeps smiling despite herself. But it’s a kind of normalcy they’re offering, from Yavin and Hoth and the cockpit of the Falcon and Luke’s grateful for even that.

They’ve progressed to debating whether Han would indeed look better in the cantina girl getup (“Are you saying I can’t pull off that shade of red? Luke, buddy, back me up here!”) when there’s a clattering and a sudden swell of noise from the entrance of the cantina.

When Luke looks up, Talesin is trying desperately to drag some woman away, his face contorted as though he’s speaking very quickly and too quietly for Luke to hear. There’s fear there too, and Luke wonders—

Talesin accidentally catches Luke’s gaze and goes ashen, freezing in place. The woman turns.

“Oh,” Luke says, because he isn’t sure if there’s anything else to say, except that. Leia looks at him sharply, and Han glances up, then he’s busy craning his neck to see who the hells Luke’s staring at.

“Do you know her?” Leia asks, but Luke is already getting to his feet.

He never really gotten along with his Whitesun cousins—too much older, they’d already been marrying, getting into trade or helping run farms by the time Luke was old enough to know them. Stiff conversation during the First Rainfall celebration and a gift on his life day, the occasional speeder ride when they were already headed into Toshe…Luke hadn’t known them well enough to expect more.

But that didn’t stop something black and sucking, desperately glad and aching, from opening up in his chest as he stood in front of a woman who looked like Aunt Beru.

Younger, of course—Cousin Myon had been only thirty-some when he left, and her hair is still pure Whitesun gold. But here. Standing, alive and unburnt.

“We thought you died,” Myon says, taking an abortive step towards Luke. It is very quiet in the cantina. “With Owen and Beru, at the homestead. Everything was so badly burnt…”

Luke swallows, shakes his head. “No, I was with Old Ben when it happened. He took me away, we…” He doesn’t know if there are any words to encompass it all—the hologram of a princess in white and Darth Vader, the Death Star and—Yavin and Hoth and Cloud City, Yoda and his father—

“I joined the Rebellion,” Luke says finally. He’s glad his voice doesn’t waver. “I became a Jedi, and I joined the Rebellion.”

The words ripple out, like wind over sand. Luke can feel them moving through the room, in and out of people’s heads. (They leave stranger shapes than he’d thought; he can see his dusty black outfit straighten, deepen to the color of night, his head held higher. The strange double-image of himself, outside himself, and taller.)

Myon blinks, and opens her mouth, then shuts it again. “Oh,” she finally says. “What brings you back?” Home, she doesn’t say. It’s accurate, but the absence still stings.

“Jabba captured my friend.”

Han, because he’s Han, raises a hand in a lazy salute and grins. Myon blinks again.

“You’re still alive. What did you offer him?”

Her voice is hard, and accusing, and it takes Luke a minute to understand what it is she means. Luke is the youngest nephew, by marriage, but under the kin-ship laws of Tatooine he still could claim a stake in the Whitesun farms. Could use it as collateral. “No, no, we didn’t…offer him anything, I have nothing to offer. You know I wouldn’t—”

“He’s dead,” Leia interrupts, and Myon’s eyes go wide, when they take her in. “That’s what he’s trying to say. Jabba the Hutt is dead.”

It’s not what Luke was trying to say, but the cantina is so quiet he feels as though even just his breathing is intruding. Myon keeps glancing between Leia and Luke like she’s trying to look for the lie.

“Jabba the Hutt is dead,” Myon repeats.

Leia stands, and even in the bedraggled and torn cantina girl costume, she could be armored in white, standing in the Alliance command deck. She is close enough for her shoulder to bump Luke’s. (He could be burnt up by the fire of her, but he’s still just grateful—glad to have her here, beside him.)

“I wrapped a chain around his ugly neck and choked him until he was dead,” she says.

Luke has to look away from the awe on Myon’s face. Belatedly, he notices Lando and Chewbacca at the bar, both of them watching the scene with hands too-casually resting on their blasters. Lando catches Luke looking, and raises his eyebrows.

Luke understands what he’s offering. He wouldn’t put it past Lando to have three escape routes in mind, an exit plan—but he can’t run from this. (Well, he could, but there wouldn’t be any point. His family finds him, is destined to find him, even swathed in black and calling itself by another name. Even from beyond the grave.)

Luke ducks his head, breathes out. “Would you want to sit down, Myon?” he asks, and when he looks up, Myon has turned all that awe on him. “I think we have a lot to discuss.”

LILITH CHARACTER INTRO

An alternate to A Wild West Love where Lilith’s entire family is ported into Rdr2 several years prior to the events of RDR2. Lilith is 25 when she and Arthur meet with the gang in Colter.

As she and Belial are massive fans of the game once realizing where the entire family is Lilith is immediately set on finding Arthur and changing history so to speak.

Belial and Belladonna are a bonded pair, Belladonna Marshall is of a line of Volkier from Scotland as Belial is Magdelena’s oldest son and Lilith’s older brother from that mother aside from Gideon’s other two sons Michael and Dagon from his first wife. (REFER TO CHARACTER INFO FOR OTHER SIBLINGS)

Thankfully the Vallent line has been around for many years in the US, so blending into their old ways is not an issue. Gideon’s line seems to be set with just himself in this strange alternate game world, extended family being in Russia.

As where Maggie’s is in Mexico, but she doesn’t know where to locate them, crafting their lineage and wealth is Childs play for all 10 members of the family.

This entails a bit of genetic evolution for Volkier people, much like how there are islanders with larger lung capacity over the hundreds of years living there. (Refer to character sheet)

I talked about it on twt, but the reason that setsupomu umbrella sharing scene hits me so hard is because it really reminds me of the ending to my long comic... 🥹🥹

(MINNEAPOLIS) — US Sen. Amy Klobuchar asked a top Minnesota prosecutor Thursday to initiate an independent investigation into the case of Myon Burrell, a black teen sentenced to life after an 11-year-old black girl was killed by a stray bullet.

“As you are aware, significant concerns about the evidence and police investigation have been raised by a press investigation, by members of the Hennepin County community, and by Myon’s family,” she wrote in a letter to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

In calling for an “independent investigation and an independent review,” Klobuchar yielded to increasing community pressure to reopen a case that dogged her Democratic presidential primary run. A yearlong Associated Press investigation published last month uncovered major flaws in the 2002 case, raising questions as to whether the 16-year-old blamed in the little girl’s death may have been wrongfully convicted.

Klobuchar made her decision after meeting with Burrell’s family on Tuesday.

“As I told them,” she wrote, “I believe that if any injustice was done in the quest for justice for Tyesha Edward, it must be addressed.”

Freeman — who in recent weeks has doubled down, saying his office believes the right man was convicted — issued a response Thursday that seemed to indicate he was satisfied with an internal review being carried out by his office. He said any new information about the case should be handed over.

Edwards was killed by a stray bullet while doing her homework at her dining room table. Burrell has served 17 years in prison for her killing, all the while insisting he is innocent.

The AP story was published while Klobuchar’s campaign was gaining steam. But she cancelled a rally in her home state two days before the Minnesota Democratic primary after around 100 protesters took over the stage, waving signs and chanting “Free Myon!” Less then 24 hours later, she ended her campaign and endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden.

Burrell was convicted twice, once when Klobuchar was the chief prosecutor. After the verdict was reversed, he was convicted a second time under Freeman’s supervision.

Throughout her political career, Klobuchar has used Burrell’s conviction to trumpet her commitment to racial justice but has faced increasing criticism from the African American community in Minnesota and national media since the AP investigation was published.

Klobuchar responded by saying, repeatedly, that any new evidence, or flawed old evidence, should be reviewed. But her letter to Freeman was her first concrete step toward making that happen. In her letter, she also said she supports sentencing review efforts taking place in other parts of the country, “to allow the system to look back at sentences to ensure that they are just.”

Last month, Freeman released a statement expressing confidence in the work of police and prosecutors in Burrell’s case.

The head of the NAACP in Minnesota, Leslie Redmond, praised Klobuchar’s decision Thursday.

“The acknowledgment that this case warrants a review is the first step to righting the wrongs that were committed against Myon and the victim’s family,” she said. ”As the calls for an independent investigation grow, we expect that Attorney Mike Freeman will have the courage to assure justice and liberty is fairly granted.”

“Oh, what are these, nya?” Rin asked, poking at the bag on the clubroom table.

“Nico-chan and I found some props for the Wonderland photoshoot.” Kotori replied, opening the bag and retrieving two items. “I thought these would look wonderful on Hanayo-chan and Rin-chan.”

“Crowns?” Hanayo blinked.

“For the king and queen pieces of a chess set.” Nico explained.

“Chess?” Rin asked. “I thought Alice met cards?”

“In the first book, yes.” Nico nodded. “The second book had a chess theme.”

“So which one is the queen?” Rin inspected the crowns in Kotori’s hands.

“This one.” The costume designer held it up.

Rin quickly grabbed it, turned and placed it on Hanayo’s head. “It looks cute on you, Kayo-chin.” She grinned happily at her friend.

“I think it would look cute on you as well, Rin-chan.” The youngest µ’s member replied.

The cat-like girl grinned as she took the other crown. “Rin likes this one, nya!” She placed it on top of her head. “Rin and Kayo-chin can now rule together!” She pulled the other girl into a hug and nuzzled against her, not caring that the motion knocked both crowns off their heads.

“What other pieces do you have in there?” Honoka inquired, leaning over to get a better look in the bag.

“Two knights, two bishops and two rooks, just like the primary pieces of chess.” Nico explained as Kotori began setting out the props. “And one pawn for the ninth person, even though there are actually more pawns than that.”

“So, how should we decide who gets to represent which piece?” Umi asked.

“Perhaps we could draw for them?” Eli suggested.

“I think Umi-chan would make a fine knight.” Kotori said. “And we found these for the knights.” She handed the archer a prop sword.

“Umi-chan would definitely make an awesome knight.” The leader of µ’s agreed. “Ne, ne, what pieces are next to the knight?”

“The knight starts between a bishop and a rook.” The former student body president stated.

“Then Kotori-chan and I should each be one of those.”

“If that’s the case,” Nozomi spoke up, “I believe Honoka-chan would make a good rook.”

“Oh? Why’s that?”

“Because the rook moves in straight lines on the board.” The shrine maiden smiled at her junior. “And you’re always driving us forward.”

Honoka grinned. “I like that idea! Say, which one of these is for the rook?”

Kotori handed her the crown in question.

Honoka’s smile only grew as she placed the prop on her head. “µ’s! Forward!” She pointed straight ahead of herself as though giving an order to advance. This earned her a laugh from some of her friends.

“So, does that make Kotori-chan a bishop then?” Rin asked.

“I think that would suit her well.” Hanayo said before her gaze turned to one of the third years. “And with her spiritual powers, I think Nozomi would also make a good bishop.”

“I’ll happily represent the bishop with Kotori-chan.” Nozomi accepted her crown from the mentioned second year.

“And that just leaves three more, nya!” Rin looked back and forth among the girls in question. “I think Maki-chan and Eli-chan would be good as either a knight or a rook.”

“Yeah, I can see that.” Nico nodded before something clicked in her mind. “Hey, that would just leave the pawn for me!”

“Exactly.” Nozomi laughed.

“Nico is not a pawn!” The raven-haired girl protested.

“I dunno, Nicocchi, you’re pretty easily manipulated…”

“I am n…” Nico cut off as she realized she was playing into the trap of the purple-haired girl. She crossed her arms defiantly. “Nico should be a knight or rook. Maki-chan can be the pawn.” She turned to the redhead. “Right, Maki-chan? You don’t care what piece you represent, right?”

Maki, who up until now had remained silent, merely shrugged and twirled her hair around her finger. “Not really.”

Truth be told, she was looking forward more to seeing the outfits Kotori and the photography company had put together for them to wear. She had seen Kotori’s proposed designs and was curious how the final results would look on everyone. And it wasn’t as if she didn’t appreciate the addition of the accessories to compliment the theme, but it really didn’t matter which piece she ended up representing; Rin, Nico and Nozomi would probably find a way to tease her about it.

“We could still draw for it,” Eli pointed out, “even just with the three of us.”

“I think Eli-chan would make a lovely knight.” Kotori spoke up. “And then she could be next to Nozomi-chan.”

Nozomi chuckled. “I’d be fine with that, though Elicchi and I don’t always have to be next to each other for everything.”

“Maki-chan would also make a good knight.” Honoka pointed out.

“And Eli-chan is good a driving forward like Honoka-chan.” Kotori considered. “Perhaps she would make a good rook.”

“But that still leaves Nico with being a pawn!” Nico groused.

“Nicocchi is still complaining?” Nozomi held up her hands and flexed her fingers.

“Geh!” Nico took a step back, turned and retreated behind a taller redhead. “Maki-chan! Save me!” She cried before sticking her tongue out at her aggressor.

Maki wasn’t sure why, but the next thing she knew, she had a prop sword in her hand and she was turning to face an approaching Nozomi.

“Yup, Maki-chan is definitely a good knight, nya!” Rin proclaimed.

Nozomi dropped her hands and offered an amused smile. “I couldn’t agree more.”

For a moment, Nico felt her heartrate increase and warmth spread through her chest. She had only intended to tease her favorite first year and hadn’t expected Maki to actually react in such a way. She had decided months ago that she wanted to protect Maki, but after this display, she realized perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad to let Maki protect her in return. But only every once in a while. Nico was the older one, after all, so it was only right that Nico protected Maki more. Then she saw red spread to Maki’s ears.

“I… I, uhm…” The pianist sputtered as she dropped the sword back onto the table.

And with that, it was back to teasing. “Dwaaa!” Nico cooed, glomping onto the younger girl from behind. “Maki-chan looked so knightly when she defended Nico from the mean ol’ Nozomi!”

“Nico-chan… I just…”

“And you know, Nicocchi,” Nozomi smirked, “a rook shouldn’t need protection from a knight.”

“For the record,” Umi spoke up, “the pawn should never be dismissed offhand. They have the potential to turn into any other piece on the board, even another queen.”

“Another queen?” Nico raised an eyebrow.

“If it reaches the opponent’s side.”

“Which means the pawn needs to be protected.” Nozomi pointed out. “Like, say, by her knight.”

Maki’s blush had almost faded, but now it returned full force.

“And the pawn has a lot of special rules that allow it to do things no other piece can do.” The blue-haired girl continued. “For example, it can move farther on its opening move, or capture a piece simply by moving behind it.”

“Moving behind it?” Rin perked up. “Then Nico-chan just captured Maki-chan, nya!”

“I did, didn’t I?” Nico giggled as she shifted her embrace so she could rest her chin on the other girl’s shoulder.

“Captured?” Maki questioned, despite not resisting being held. “What the heck?”

“Also, I believe Alice was essentially the pawn in the story.” Hanayo added.

Nico blinked. “You know, I think you’re right Hanayo.” She grinned. “Nico in Wonderland has a nice ring to it, I believe.”

“I don’t get it.” Maki sighed.

“Fine, fine, Nico will be the pawn.”

“Wait…” Rin thought for a moment. “Aren’t there something like nine pawns? Nine Nico-chans?”

“There are eight pawns.” Umi stated.

Maki’s shoulders slumped. “The universe can barely handle one…”

“Nico-nii is pretty amazing.” Nico agreed, though probably not in the way Maki intended. “Nico can see how nine would be overwhelming.”

“Eight.” Umi corrected again.

“Whatever.” Nico dismissed. “Still, there can really only be one true Nico-nii.”

“Idiot…” Maki muttered.

“You like it.” Nico laughed.

“… Maybe…”

“Well,” Eli clapped her hands together “now that that is all decided, let’s work on the next set.”

Seven other girls agreed enthusiastically while one was still thinking about multiple pawns and being captured from behind.

Author’s Notes Continued: 1, 2, 3. Three Anon Asks about the Wonderland set. (Ah! Ah! Ah!) I think my readers really wanted a scene about it, and I can only hope this at least comes close to their expectations. And if it isn’t, perhaps the scene I’d like to write about the photoshoot itself might better suit their fancy... whenever I get around to writing it.

Also, this amazing work by @myonmukyuu played a large part in deciding Maki’s actions to defend Nico. The fact that she has a sword in the card’s depiction and that she was released alongside Nico already had the gears grinding in my mind. Myon’s pic sealed the deal as it made me realize I wasn’t the only one thinking along those lines.

Next, for those readers not well versed in chess, the title of the chapter refers to a special move pawns can make to capture another pawn. It is referencing the fact that Nico captures Maki after moving past her. And yes, for those better versed in chess, I realize that Maki has basically accepted the role as knight at that point and the move cannot be used on that piece. Also, generally speaking, one does not capture friendly pieces.

I tried to keep the chess rules chat overly simplified because I do not see any of the girls being experts. And the point of the scene wansn’t intended to be an in-depth discussion of the game. However, I can see Umi and possibly Hanayo having played a game or two in their time and thus at least knowing the basics; enough to try to help placate a grumpy Nico.

Finally, my original draft had Eli or Nozomi offer to have Nico be part of the secondary focus pair (SSR), but I still have yet to decide how to deal with those in the HtHaN universe. As such, I may come back to this scene later if I eventually figure things out.

New story in Politics from Time: Amy Klobuchar Calls for Independent Review of Murder Case That Dogged Her Presidential Campaign

Klobuchar made her decision after meeting with Burrell’s family on Tuesday.

“As I told them,” she wrote, “I believe that if any injustice was done in the quest for justice for Tyesha Edward, it must be addressed.”

Edwards was killed by a stray bullet while doing her homework at her dining room table. Burrell has served 17 years in prison for her killing, all the while insisting he is innocent.

Burrell was convicted twice, once when Klobuchar was the chief prosecutor. After the verdict was reversed, he was convicted a second time under Freeman’s supervision.

Last month, Freeman released a statement expressing confidence in the work of police and prosecutors in Burrell’s case.

The head of the NAACP in Minnesota, Leslie Redmond, praised Klobuchar’s decision Thursday.
