Magazine advertisements for N.U.D.E@ Natural Ultimate Digital Experiment by Red Entertainment, 2003. It's a shame that these playful scenes never made it to the game package design itself. They would have made a fabulous transition from DVD box cover to manual cover.

Thinking of other voice applications in gaming. Proximity chat - immersive, cool, funny as all gets. Lethal Company would not have been a success without it. Mainstay of early Halo. Went away in most shooters for fear of toxicity. Understandable. Most people stick to discord instead of in-game chat in the games I frequent, anyway. But there is a magic to it all the same...
Virtual pets - alluded to it, but Seaman, Hey You, Pikachu!, the Japan-only N.U.D.E.@ Natural Ultimate Digital Experiment.. super basic, super limited, more of an interactive toy/piece of software than an actual game. Pikachu could NOT detect very many words with the power of the N64, going off this list of registered keywords.. but the illusion was strong enough for some that I see people begging for a sequel 25 years later. Then again, Pokemon fans are just like that.
Some horror/stealth games starting in the PS2 days tried out an optional voice feature - examples I can recall include Manhunt, a Splinter Cell or two, and I think console versions of Alien: Isolation but /not/ PC. Any sound you make is heard by the game - and all of the tangos, violent murderers, or predatory aliens, too..! A fun, if flawed idea - good for a laugh at a streamer's expense, but very slight. It's immersive, I guess. Sometimes it came in handy to lure a guy your way, but this doesn't feel like it's doing as much as it could with vocal recognition and what not. I've seen some indie games along the way pick up this torch, but it's pretty much just "make noise = die". Not much there.
Something with /even less/ meat on the bone and something I saw mostly in the 360 generation ... voice commands. Whether you're using a headset or the Kinect, use /your voice/ to issue commands to your squad - or your /army/, if you're playing Tom Clancy's EndWar! Voice-operated RTS? Voice-operated squad shooter? Hey, why not. Only - again - the voice recognition just wasn't there most of the time, and it was quicker and faster to just hit the reload button instead of saying 'reload' and why are we even bothering with this.... But I suppose it's immersive, right? Yeah?
youtube
Dark days.
I guess my fascination w/ Lifeline is that it feels like a whole genre that they only made a single game for before throwing it up on the dusty shelf of Failed Novelties, joined by the Xbox 360's Kinect a decade later. Ambition outstretched the ability. A game played with your voice.. a 'second-person' game where you develop a rapport with the hero and aid them indirectly instead of /controlling/ the hero. There's a lot there! But it's a lot of work. The tech wasn't ready. It's easy to get unrealistic and overly imaginative. It's not so much that I'm hoping to have full conversations with a virtual character about anything, but .... well, we're gonna get shoved into that again someday soon, huh? Somebody is going to do Seaman: ChatGPT edition and that's on that.
