Nace Week Day 3: Nace written by Taylor Swift
She had to do it.
That’s what Nancy kept telling herself as she left the prosecutor's office.
It was to save Ace’s life.
That’s what she told herself whenever someone made a snide remark.
There was no other choice.
That’s what she told herself when she walked out of her house one day to eggs being thrown at the windows.
I couldn’t lose you.
That’s what she told Ace as she hugged him tighter than she’d ever had before, her hand entangled in his hair to stop it from shaking.
You made the right choice.
That’s what Ace told her after he caught her crying over the hate emails she’d been receiving.
She sniffed. “I know, but-“
“But nothing,” He said firmly as he sat next to her, the bed bending under his weight. “You saved my life, Nance.”
“But they don’t know that!” Her hand fell onto the keyboard, a random assortment of letters appearing in the new message box. “They don’t know everything you went through, they don’t know-”
“They don’t know anything.” Ace cut her off, gently taking her hands away from the laptop and closing it. Nancy gave him a look, which he ignored. “They have no idea what they are talking about, which means their words mean nothing.”
“They mean something, Ace.” Her hands fidgeted in his, her thumb running over his. Her leg bounced in the crisscrossed position she sat in, shaking her whole body. “Words always mean something- and the stares? You see how they look at us. Everyone hates me, they can’t trust me anymore.” She took a shaky breath in an attempt to calm herself down. “That is the only thing I had, and it’s gone.”
“No, it’s not.” He shook his head, waiting until her eyes met his. “It’s not. You got me.”
She scoffed slightly. “You know what I mean.” Her hands escaped his, opening her laptop once more. She scrolled through her recent email list. “I mean, look at this. There’s no end, every single one of these is hate. It’s not stopping.”
“Nancy, I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but they are just stupid. They’re stupid, middle-aged assholes who have nothing better to do with their lives than send you hate. So you have to just ignore them.”
“How do I do that when people are throwing eggs at my house?” She turned towards him, her lip quivering slightly.
“Well for starters-“ He took the laptop from its spot next to her, moving it to the nightstand. “We stop looking at emails and start focusing on something else.”
“Like what, Ace?”
He hesitated for a moment, wondering if the idea forming in the back of his mind was worth mentioning or not. “Kittens.”
Nancy stared at him, the quiver in her lip increasing as she took a breath in. “Please do not have a stroke on me right now, I swear to god-”
“The Kitten Cafe on Johnson.” Ace hid a small smile on his face from her reaction. “We go there for an hour, and if people talk, I’ll be right there. And so will 16 kittens.”
She had to smile, seeing the joy in his eyes at the idea. “Alright fine.”
“Perfect.”

holding onto things we said would change
Tumblr media
“Yeah, I’m here, Nance,” he says, his voice strained. “I can’t move at all… that smoke must have been some kind of paralysis spell.”
“Must have been…” Nancy says weakly.
She feels the steady beating of his heart beneath her head and suddenly she’s hit with the horrible deja vu of this position. Her head on his chest, his chin tucked on top of her head, her body practically plastered to his side, her arm limply slung over his middle. A memory that’s only hers, that he’ll never know.
If she closes her eyes, she bets she would feel the warm sun seeping through the window, the feeling of his smooth skin against hers. She keeps her eyes wide open.

Fort Hardy

prompt: nace week, 15 years in the future
sypnosis: Nancy is used to coming home to chaos everyday. So, when her daughter can storming down the stairs calling for her, she wasn’t all that surprised.
Nancy and Ace were used to walking into their home and being met with chaos. In fact, it was so common sometimes when Nancy would come home from work late and be met with silence, she would become highly concerned.
Thankfully though, today she unlocked her front door to her 13-year-old daughter, storming down the staircase. “Mom, your husband has gone insane.”
“Don’t you mean your father?” Not even phased, Nancy handed Noa the take-out bags, taking off her own satchel and placing it on the hook next to her coat.
“He has taken over the kitchen. It’s like a war scene in there, an apocalypse.”
“Baby, don’t you think you’re being a little dramatic?” She smiled slightly at her daughter’s flair for the dramatics, something she inherited from her Aunt Bess.
“Mom, you don’t understand!” She handed off one of the bags to Nancy, sighing. “It’s better if I just show you.”
“Lead the way!” She sighed, not quite sure about what she was going to walk into. Although, whatever small idea she might’ve thought she had, nothing would compare to what she walked into.
All of the throw blankets were attached to the cabinets, creating a tent-like ceiling. More blankets covered the windows, failing to block out the light entirely and just giving the room a blueish glow.
Nancy recognized her and Ace’s duvet spread between the island and cabinet, joined by both Jake and Joey’s comforters. Due to the lack of muted pink and light gray blankets, she assumed Noa refused the boys access to anything from her room.
Pillows created a barricade to one side of the tiny room they had created, and two of the island barstools created the entrance on the opposite end. Ace, army crawling out from underneath, noticed his wife standing in the archway, mouth agape.
“Hi honey, how are you?” Jake emerged from behind him, crawling onto his Dad’s back.
“Well right now, I’m happy that I said we should pick up Chipotle for Saturday dinner.” She motioned towards the chaos in front of her. “What is this?”
“It’s a fort!” Joey ran in from behind her, carrying his stuffed animals and disappearing into the depths of blankets.
“Okay… why have you built a fort in my kitchen?” She directed the question towards Ace but was hoping for an answer from anyone in the room at this point.
“Because they’re crazy!” Noa shouted from where she had disappeared up the stairs, no doubt about to text her aunt about the chaos that was unfolding in her kitchen.
"We have to protect ourselves from the monsters out there, honey. You're in the risk area right now, by the way." He looked behind him, and suddenly Joey emerged with a foam sword in hand.
“I’m sorry?”
“Mama, run!” She scooted out of the way as both her twins started sprinting towards her, disappearing into the living room.
“Please tell me our living room isn’t as chaotic as our kitchen.”
“Noa made sure the boys did not touch it.” Ace slowly climbed his way off the floor, walking over to Nancy and placing a kiss on her lips.
“Just the boys? Or you too?” She placed the bags of takeout in the only room left on the kitchen counter, crossing her arms over her chest.
Ace paused for a second, seemingly coming up with an answer. “I plead the fifth.”
“We have four kids and four adults coming over within the next hour, where are we all going to eat?”
“We can eat in the living room, the kids will love it,” He went behind her, wrapping his around her neck and placing another kiss on her cheek.
She leaned back into him, trying to suppress a smile. “I am not happy about this,”
“Maybe I can…”
“We’re here!” The two of them heard Bess sing from the entryway, the voices of Aspen, Astrid, and Aria running through the house to find their cousins carrying with it.
“We will finish this conversation later,” Nancy placed one last kiss on her husband’s lips, before pulling him out of their chaotic kitchen.
